Abstract:Optical tweezers is an increasingly important technique for controlling and probing particles since computer-generated holography (CGH) make steering of multiple traps individually possible. In addition, the dark focus of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams is increasingly widely used in trapping reflecting, absorbing or low-dielectric-constant objects. In this paper, we present a method to create arbitrary three-dimensional configurations of orbital angular momentum modes to achieve manipulation of micro-particles. Compared with conventional optical tweezers, this method can steer mixed arrays of traps individually and randomly by producing three-dimensional structure of optical vortices. These optical traps we used was formed by a CGH generated complex phase mask, which has three components: 1) a helical phase mask to change the transverse phase structure, 2) a blazed grating phase mask to vary the propagation direction of the incident beams, and 3) a modulated grating phase mask to divert the focal plane from the planar configurations. The latter one ensure that we can form threedimensional trapping patterns. The trap patterns can also be generated dynamically by holographic display system based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS). The experimental results show that the refresh frequency of reconfiguring achieves 24fps. Our method is effective and promise an exciting new opportunity to be used as a valuable non-contact manipulation tool in various applications.

Abstract:Light and sound waves have the fascinating property that they can move objects through the transfer of linear or angular momentum. This ability has led to the development of optical and acoustic tweezers, with applications ranging from biomedical engineering to quantum optics. Although impressive manipulation results have been achieved, the stringent requirement for a highly controlled, low-reverberant, and static environment still hinders the applicability of these techniques in many scenarios. Here, we overcome this challenge and demonstrate the manipulation of objects in disordered and dynamic media, by optimally tailoring the momentum of sound waves iteratively in the far field. The method does not require information about the object's physical properties or the spatial structure of the surrounding medium but relies only on a real-time scattering matrix measurement and a positional guidestar. Our experiment demonstrates the possibility of optimally moving and rotating objects, extending the reach of wave-based object manipulation to complex and dynamic scattering media. We envision new opportunities for biomedical applications, sensing, or manufacturing.

Abstract:Contactless manipulation of microparticles is demonstrated with single-beam acoustical tweezers based on precursor swirling Rayleigh waves. These surface waves degenerate into acoustical vortices when crossing a stack made of a fluid layer and its solid support, hence creating a localized acoustical trap in a fluid cavity. They can be synthesized with a single interdigitated transducer whose spiraling shape encodes the phase of the field like a hologram. For applications, these tweezers have many attractive features: they are selective, flat, easily integrable, and compatible with disposable substrates.

Abstract:Hypothesis: The accurate and dynamic manipulation of multiple micro-sized objects has always been a technical challenge in areas of colloid assembly, tissue engineering, and organ regeneration. The hypothesis of this paper is the precise modulation and parallel manipulation of morphology of individual and multiple colloidal multimers can be achieved by customizing acoustic field. Experiments: Herein, we present a colloidal multimer manipulation method by using acoustic tweezers with bisymmetric coherent surface acoustic waves (SAWs), which enables contactless morphology modulation of individual colloidal multimers and patterning arrays by regulating the shape of acoustic field to specific desired distributions with high accuracy. Rapid switching of multimer patterning arrays, morphology modulation of individual multimers, and controllable rotation can be achieved by regulating coherent wave vector configurations and phase relations in real time. Findings: To demonstrate the capabilities of this technology, we have firstly achieved eleven patterns of deterministic morphology switching for single hexamer and precise switching between three array modes. In addition, the assembly of multimers with three kinds of specific widths and controllable rotation of single multimers and arrays were demonstrated from 0 to 22.4 rpm (tetramers). Therefore, this technique enables reversible assembly and dynamic manipulation of particles and/or cells in colloid synthesis applications.

The acoustic tweezers enable contactless morphology modulation of individual multimers and patterning arrays by regulating the shapes of acoustic field to the desired distributions with high accuracy. Rapid switching of multimer patterning arrays and morphology modulation of individual multimers with totally eleven patterns (hexamers) can be achieved by real-time regulating the frequency, amplitude, and phase relationships of signals input to interdigital transducers (IDTs). Therefore, this technique can be applied to reversible assembly and dynamic manipulation of particles and/or cells in biomedical applications.

Abstract:Abstract Acoustic tweezer technique with non-contact micro-object manipulation capability has been widely utilized for particle patterning in the fields of cell arraying, target drug delivery, and functional composite fabrication. However, the manipulation resolution of acoustic tweezer device is decided by the configuration of interdigital transducers (IDTs), which is half the wavelength of surface acoustic waves (SAWs). This limitation severely reduces the manipulation versatility of acoustic tweezer devices. To address this limitation, we propose a novel approach that employs phase-modulated pulsing coherent SAWs. This method can halve the patterning spacing and allows for customization of the spacing based on specific manipulation demands. Our proposed technique increases the flexibility and manipulation resolution of acoustic tweezer device, and thus can be widely applied to reconfigurable assembly and precise manipulation of particles and cells.

Abstract:Acoustic tweezers based on surface acoustic waves (SAWs) have raised great interest in the fields of tissue engineering, targeted therapy, and drug delivery. Generally, the complex structure and array layout design of interdigital electrodes would restrict the applications of acoustic tweezers. Here, we present a novel approach by using bisymmetric coherent acoustic tweezers to modulate the shape of acoustic pressure fields with high flexibility and accuracy. Experimental tests were conducted to perform the precise, contactless, and biocompatible cluster manipulation of polystyrene microparticles and yeast cells. Stripe, dot, quadratic lattice, hexagonal lattice, interleaved stripe, oblique stripe, and many other complex arrays were achieved by real-time modulation of amplitudes and phase relations of coherent SAWs to demonstrate the capability of the device for the cluster manipulation of particles and cells. Furthermore, rapid switching among various arrays, shape regulation, geometric parameter modulation of array units, and directional translation of microparticles and cells were implemented. This study demonstrated a favorable technique for flexible and versatile manipulation and patterning of cells and biomolecules, and it has the advantages of high manipulation accuracy and adjustability, thus it is expected to be utilized in the fields of targeted cellular assembly, biological 3D printing, and targeted release of drugs.

Abstract:Precise control of microparticle movement is crucial in high throughput processing for various applications in scalable manufacturing, such as particle monolayer assembly and 3D bio-printing. Current techniques using acoustic, electrical and optical methods offer precise manipulation advantages, but their scalability is restricted due to issues such as, high input powers and complex fabrication and operation processes. In this work, we introduce the concept of capillary wave tweezers, where mm-scale capillary wave fields are dynamically manipulated to control the position of microparticles in a liquid volume. Capillary waves are generated in an open liquid volume using low frequency vibrations (in the range of 10–100 Hz) to trap particles underneath the nodes of the capillary waves. By shifting the displacement nodes of the waves, the trapped particles are precisely displaced. Using analytical and numerical models, we identify conditions under which a stable control over particle motion is achieved. By showcasing the ability to dynamically control the movement of microparticles, our concept offers a simple and high throughput method to manipulate particles in open systems.

Photon-efficient optical tweezers via wavefront shaping

Abstract:Optical tweezers enable non-contact trapping of micro-scale objects using light. Despite their widespread use, it is currently not known how tightly it is possible to three-dimensionally trap micro-particles with a given photon budget. Reaching this elusive limit would enable maximally-stiff particle trapping for precision measurements on the nanoscale, and photon-efficient tweezing of light-sensitive objects. Here we solve this problem by customising a trapping light field to suit a specific particle, with the aim of simultaneously optimising trap stiffness in all three dimensions. Initially taking a theoretical approach, we develop an efficient multi-parameter optimisation routine to design bespoke optical traps for a wide range of micro-particles. We show that the confinement volume of micro-spheres held in these sculpted traps can be reduced by one-to-two orders-of-magnitude in comparison to a conventional optical tweezer of the same power. We go on to conduct proof-of-principle experiments, and use a wavefront shaping inspired strategy to suppress the Brownian fluctuations of optically trapped micro-spheres in every direction concurrently, thus demonstrating order-of-magnitude reductions in their confinement volumes. Our work paves the way towards the fundamental limits of optical control over the mesoscopic realm.

Abstract:Acoustic tweezers based on travelling surface acoustic waves (TSAWs) have the potential for contactless trajectory manipulation and motion-parameter regulation of microparticles in biological and microfluidic applications. Here, we present a novel design of a tri-directional symmetrical acoustic tweezers device that enables the precise manipulation of linear, clockwise, and anticlockwise trajectories of microparticles. By switching the excitation combinations of interdigital electrodes (IDTs), various shape patterns of acoustic pressure fields can be formed to capture and steer microparticles accurately according to pre-defined trajectories. Numerical simulations and experimental tests were conducted in this study. By adjusting the input electric signals and the fluid's viscosity, the device is able to manipulate microparticles of various forms as well as brine shrimp egg cells with the accurate modulation of motion parameters. The results show that the proposed programmable design possesses low-cost, compact, non-contact, and high biocompatibility benefits, with the capacity to accurately manage microparticles in a range of motion trajectories, independent of their physical and/or chemical characteristics. Thus, our design has strong potential applications in chemical composition analysis, drug delivery, and cell assembly.
Spectral holographic trapping: Creating dynamic force landscapes with polyphonic waves

Abstract:Acoustic trapping uses forces exerted by sound waves to transport small objects along specified trajectories in three dimensions. The structure of the acoustic force landscape is governed by the amplitude and phase profiles of the sound's pressure wave. These profiles can be controlled through deliberate spatial modulation of monochromatic waves, by analogy to holographic optical trapping. Alternatively, spatial and temporal control can be achieved by interfering a small number of sound waves at multiple frequencies to create acoustic holograms based on spectral content. We demonstrate spectral holographic trapping by projecting acoustic conveyor beams that move millimeter-scale objects along prescribed paths, and control the complexity of particle trajectories by tuning the strength of weak reflections. Illustrative spectral superpositions of static and dynamic force landscapes enable us to realize two variations on the theme of a wave-driven oscillator, a deceptively simple dynamical system with surprisingly complex phenomenology.

Abstract:Acoustic tweezers have found potential applications in both the physical and life sciences in the past two decades due to their abilities of contactless, controllable and noninvasive trapping and manipulating micro-scale objects regardless of material transparency. Approaches to acoustic trapping of micro-objects required large field intensities. They are usually generated directly by acoustic transducer, cannot be redesigned easily, nor can the corresponding acoustic radiation forces be modulated efficiently. Recently, the artificial structures, such as phononic crystal or metamaterials, can provide a facile way of controlling the field distribution of acoustic wave. These artificial fields may have potential application in acoustic manipulation. In this work, we demonstrate that a geometrical modulated trapping force can exert on an object as it is near the surface of structured artificial brass plate at resonance frequency. The mechanism and condition of this trapping effect are discussed via the field and force analyzing, respectively.

Abstract:Advances in optical tweezers, coupled with the proliferation of two-photon polymerization systems, mean that it is now becoming routine to fabricate and trap non-spherical particles. The shaping of both light beams and particles allows fine control over the flow of momentum from the optical to mechanical regimes. However, understanding and predicting the behaviour of such systems is highly complex in comparison with the traditional optically trapped microsphere. In this Article, we present a conceptually new and simple approach based on the nature of the optical force density. We illustrate the method through the design and fabrication of a shaped particle capable of acting as a passive force clamp, and we demonstrate its use as an optically trapped probe for imaging surface topography. Further applications of the design rules highlighted here may lead to new sensors for probing biomolecule mechanics, as well as to the development of optically actuated micromachines.

Abstract:With the emergence of regenerative medicine, cell printers, and labs on chips, the contactless selective manipulation of microscopic objects such as particles, cells, or drops has become a key feature. To complete this task, acoustic tweezers appear as a tremendous alternative to their magnetic and optical counterpart. Indeed, they do not require pre-tagging of the manipulated object and they enable particles trapping with forces several orders of magnitude larger than optical tweezers at same input power. Recently, Baresh et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett., 116, 024301 (2016)] demonstrated the selective 3D manipulation of particles with a specific class of waves called acoustical vortices. Nevertheless, such manipulation was achieved with a complex transducer array coupled with a high end programmable electronics. This system is cumbersome, not compatible with microscopes and hardly miniaturizable. To overcome these difficulties, our team developed new tweezers [Riaud et al., Phys. Rev. Appl. 7, 024007 (2017)] based on spiraling interdigitated transducers (IDTs), some electrodes sputtered at the surface of piezoelectric substrates patterned by photolithography. The shape of the electrodes encodes the phase of the field like a hologram. For applications, these tweezers have many attractive features: they are selective, flat, easily integrable, and compatible with disposable substrates.

Abstract:Surface acoustic wave (SAW) tweezers are a promising multifunctional micromanipulation method that controls microscale targets via patterned acoustic fields. Owing to their device structure and bonding process, most SAW tweezers have limitations in terms of controlling the position and motion of the acoustic traps, as they generate an acoustic field with a fixed region and adjust the manipulation effects via signal modulation. To address this challenge, we propose movable SAW tweezers with a multilayer structure, achieving dynamic control of their wave field and acoustic trap positions; we demonstrate their precise manipulation functions, such as translation, in-plane rotation, out-of-plane rotation, and cluster formation, on a wide spectrum of samples, including particles, bubbles, droplets, cells, and microorganisms. Our method not only improves the degree of freedom and working range of SAW tweezers but also allows for precise and selective manipulation of microtargets via microtools and localized wavefields. Owing to their flexibility, versatility, and biocompatibility, the movable SAW tweezers can be a practical platform for achieving arbitrary manipulation of microscale targets and have the potential to play significant roles in biomedical microrobotics.
Coherent Wave Control in Complex Media with Arbitrary Wavefronts

Abstract:Wavefront shaping (WFS) has emerged as a powerful tool to control the propagation of diverse wave phenomena (light, sound, microwaves, etc.) in disordered matter for applications including imaging, communication, energy transfer, micromanipulation, and scattering anomalies. Nonetheless, in practice the necessary coherent control of multiple input channels remains a vexing problem. Here, we overcome this difficulty by doping the disordered medium with programmable meta-atoms in order to adapt it to an imposed arbitrary incoming wavefront. Besides lifting the need for carefully shaped incident wavefronts, our approach also unlocks new opportunities such as sequentially achieving different functionalities with the same arbitrary wavefront. We demonstrate our concept experimentally for electromagnetic waves using programmable metasurfaces in a chaotic cavity, with applications to focusing with the generalized Wigner-Smith operator as well as coherent perfect absorption. Abstract:Acoustic tweezers have great application prospects because they allow noncontact and noninvasive manipulation of microparticles in a wide range of media. However, the nontransparency and heterogeneity of media in practical applications complicate particle trapping and manipulation. In this study, we designed a 1.04 MHz 256-element 2D matrix array for 3D acoustic tweezers to guide and monitor the entire process using real-time 3D ultrasonic images, thereby enabling acoustic manipulation in nontransparent media. Furthermore, we successfully performed dynamic 3D manipulations on multiple microparticles using multifoci and vortex traps. We achieved 3D particle manipulation in heterogeneous media (through resin baffle and ex vivo macaque and human skulls) by introducing a method based on the time reversal principle to correct the phase and amplitude distortions of the acoustic waves. Our results suggest cutting-edge applications of acoustic tweezers such as acoustical drug delivery, controlled micromachine transfer, and precise treatment.

Abstract:A novel acoustic vortex tweezers system is reported, which leverages a unique acoustic vortex end effector based on a portable, battery‐powered, cascaded circular acoustic array. The system enables contactless, multi‐mode, programmable object surfing, as demonstrated in experiments involving trapping, repelling, and spinning particles, translating particles along complex paths, guiding particles around barriers, and translating and rotating droplets containing zebrafish larvae. Tweezers based on optical, electric, magnetic, and acoustic fields have shown great potential for contactless object manipulation. However, current tweezers designed for manipulating millimeter‐sized objects such as droplets, particles, and small animals exhibit limitations in translation resolution, range, and path complexity. Here, a novel acoustic vortex tweezers system is introduced, which leverages a unique airborne acoustic vortex end effector integrated with a three‐degree‐of‐freedom (DoF) linear motion stage, for enabling contactless, multi‐mode, programmable manipulation of millimeter‐sized objects. The acoustic vortex end effector utilizes a cascaded circular acoustic array, which is portable and battery‐powered, to generate an acoustic vortex with a ring‐shaped energy pattern. The vortex applies acoustic radiation forces to trap and spin an object at its center, simultaneously protecting this object by repelling other materials away with its high‐energy ring. Moreover, The vortex tweezers system facilitates contactless, multi‐mode, programmable object surfing, as demonstrated in experiments involving trapping, repelling, and spinning particles, translating particles along complex paths, guiding particles around barriers, translating and rotating droplets containing zebrafish larvae, and merging droplets. With these capabilities, It is anticipated that the tweezers system will become a valuable tool for the automated, contactless handling of droplets, particles, and bio‐samples in biomedical and biochemical research.
