Abstract:In a research article published last year we reported red shifting of the charge transfer band of Reichardt’s dye in the visible spectrum when the solvent was vibrationally coupled to an optical cavity, indicating a change in the polarity of the solvent. The magnitude of the observed shifts correlated with the alkyl chain length of the alcohol solvents and with their polarizability and solvent-accessible surface area. Control experiments under off-resonance conditions in which none of the vibrational bands of interest were coupled to the cavity showed no shifts. We interpreted these experiments as evidence that strong coupling is responsible for the observed shifting, and that the change in solvent polarity was due to the impact of vibrational strong coupling (VSC) on London dispersion forces within the coupled solvent. However, additional experiments and transfer matrix simulations (TMS) to mimic the transmission of light through the optical Fabry Perot (FP) cavity have caused us to revisit this interpretation. We now believe that the observed shifts for Reichardt’s dye were an optical artifact caused by neglecting reflection when measuring absorbance in transmission mode. Unfortunately, the parameters found to modulate the magnitude of the shift in our experiments were also found to do the same in the TMS. We regret to not have identified the underlying reason for the shift in the absorption spectrum and hope that the simulation results presented here will be instructive for the Strong Coupling community. This spectral error does not undermine the conclusion of other published studies showing effects of VSC on London dispersion forces.

Abstract:In article number 1801644, Chao Deng, Qisheng Zhang, and co-workers demonstrate that there is enough free volume in amorphous organic semiconductor films for molecular rotation and rearrangement, which is in contradiction to the common-sense view that the rotation of organic molecules or their segments in organic thin films is restricted. The cover depicts that in organic semiconductor films several ground state molecules reorient in an electric field created by an excited molecule with enlarged dipole moment.

Abstract:Steady-state and time-resolved emission measurements of the solvatochromic probe coumarin 153 are used to study solvation of a dipolar solute in nondipolar solvents such as benzene and 1,4-dioxane. Contrary to the predictions of dielectric continuum theories, the Stokes shifts (or nuclear reorganization energies) that accompany electronic excitation of this solute are substantial in such solvents (∼1000 cm-1). The magnitudes of the shifts observed in both nondipolar and dipolar solvents can be consistently understood in terms of the relative strength of the interactions between the permanent charge distributions of the solute and solvent molecules. (Information concerning these charge distributions is derived from extensive ab initio calculations on the solute and 31 common solvents.) The dynamics of solvation in nondipolar solvents, as reflected in the time dependence of the Stokes shifts, is qualitatively like that observed in polar solvents. But, whereas the dynamics in polar solvents can be rather simply modeled using the solvents dielectric response as empirical input, no simple theories of this sort are currently capable of predicting the solvation dynamics in nondipolar solvents.

Abstract:Elucidating solvation effects on polarizability in condensed phases is important for the description of the optical and dielectric behavior of high-refractive-index molecular materials. We study these effects via the polarizability model combining electronic, solvation, and vibrational contributions. The method is applied to well-characterized highly polarizable liquid precursors: benzene, naphthalene, and phenanthrene. We find that the solvation and vibrational terms are of opposite signs and cancel almost exactly for benzene, but for naphthalene and phenanthrene, a 2.5 and 5.0% decrease relative to the equilibrium electronic polarizability of the respective monomer, α1e, is predicted, respectively. The increase in electronic polarizability affects interaction polarizability of all contacts, which is the main reason for the increasing importance of solvation contribution. The calculated refractive indices agree very well with experiment for all three systems.

Abstract:Recent experiments have demonstrated that it is possible to modify ground-state chemical reactivities by placing an ensemble of molecules in an optical microcavity through resonant coupling between the cavity and vibrational degrees of freedom (DOF) of the molecules. This new strategy of vibrational strong coupling (VSC), if feasible, will offer a paradigm shift in synthetic chemistry through cavity-enabled bond-selective chemical transformations. This so-called VSC regime operates in the absence of any light source, occurs under the resonance condition when cavity frequency matches the molecular vibrational frequency, and only occurs at the normal incidence when considering in-plane momentum inside a Fabry-Perot cavity. In this work, we provide a potential mechanism that explains all observed phenomena. Using numerically exact quantum dynamics simulations and an analytic rate theory, we have demonstrated the resonant suppression of the rate constant when coupling the cavity mode to a vibrational spectator mode in a model reaction. Both the analytic theory and the simulations can explain previously observed phenomena, including the non-linear change of the rate constant when increasing Rabi splitting, modification of both reactive enthalpy and entropy, and for a reason why with a very low barrier, there is a lack of the cavity modification. The analytic theory can also explain the normal incidence condition, and collective coupling effects when solvents are collectively coupled to both cavity mode and reaction coordinate.

Abstract:We develop an extension of the time-dependent equation-of-motion formulation of the polarizable continuum model (EOM-TDPCM) to introduce nonequilibrium cavity field effects in quantum mechanical calculations of solvated molecules subject to time-dependent electric fields. This method has been implemented in Octopus, a state-of-the-art code for real-space, real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) calculations. To show the potential of our methodology, we perform EOM-TDPCM/RT-TDDFT calculations of trans-azobenzene in water and in other model solvents with shorter relaxation times. Our results for the optical absorption spectrum of trans-azobenzene show (i) that cavity field effects have a clear impact in the overall spectral shape and (ii) that an accurate description of the solute shape (as the one provided within PCM) is key to correctly account for cavity field effects.

Abstract:The solvatochromism of several polar solutes, including some that contain both hydrogen bond-donating and -accepting properties (coumarins 1, 102, 120, 151, 152, and 153; nile red; and 4-aminofluorenone), is analyzed in terms of three models: the Reichardt single parameter E T N polarity scale, the multiparameter Kamlet−Taft equation, and the reaction field model. We use a “step-forward” procedure to determine which terms of the Kamlet−Taft equation are statistically significant in fitting the data. These equations provide the best fits to the data in almost all cases. We also find a correlation between the parameters s and a, which quantify the effects on the transition energy related to the solvatochromic parameters π* and α, respectively. This relationship suggests that the magnitude of a is not indicative of the strength of the hydrogen-bonding interaction, but rather reflects the additional field produced from the dipole moment of a hydrogen bond-donating molecule that is held in an orientation that roughly parallels the solute dipole.

Abstract:Correlation spectrogram showing the frequency dependence of the CN triple bond vibration of acetonitrile on the ACN(N atom)–silver intermolecular distance. The heat map indicates a probability distribution. Acetole, a polar molecule that cannot form hydrogen bonds on its own, interacts with solvent molecules mainly through the lone pair of its nitrogen atom and the π electrons of its CN triple bond. Interestingly, acetonitrile exhibits an unexpected strengthening of the triple bond's force constant in an aqueous environment, leading to an upshift (blueshift) in the corresponding stretching vibration: this effect contrasts with the usual consequence of hydrogen bonding on the vibrational frequencies of the acceptor groups, that is, frequency redshift. This investigation elucidates this phenomenon using Raman spectroscopy to examine the behavior of acetonitrile in organic solvent, water, and silver ion aqueous solutions, where an even more pronounced upshift is observed. Raman spectroscopy is particularly well suited for analyzing aqueous solutions due to the minimal scattering effect of water molecules across most of the vibrational spectrum. Computational approaches, both static and dynamical, based on Density Functional Theory and hybrid functionals, are employed here to interpret these findings, and accurately reproduce the vibrational frequencies of acetonitrile in different environments. Our calculations also allow an explanation for this unique behavior in terms of electric charge displacements. On the other hand, the study of the interaction of acetonitrile with water molecules and metal ions is relevant for the use of this molecule as a solvent in both chemical and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract:We present a computational study of static and dynamic linear polarizabilities in solution. We use different theoretical approaches to describe solvent effects, ranging from quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) to quantum embedding approaches. In particular, we consider non-polarizable and polarizable QM/MM methods, the latter based on the fluctuating charge (FQ) force field. In addition, we use a quantum embedding method defined in the context of multilevel Hartree-Fock (MLHF), where the system is divided into active and inactive regions, and combine it with a third layer described by means of the FQ model. The multiscale approaches are then used as reference wave functions for equation-of-motion coupled cluster (EOM-CC) response properties, allowing for the account of electron correlation. The developed models are applied to the calculation of linear response properties of two organic moieties - namely, para-nitroaniline and benzonitrile - in non-aqueous solvents - 1,4-dioxane, acetonitrile, and tetrahydrofuran. The computed polarizabilities are then discussed in terms of the physico-chemical solute-solvent interactions described by each method (electrostatic, polarization and Pauli repulsion), and finally compared with the available experimental references.
