Abstract:Nucleons and electrons were once considered elementary particles, a role nowadays taken by quarks and leptons. Here, mainly at the group theoretical level, we examine the unorthodox idea that nucleons and electrons share the same level of compositeness after all. We do it by first trading color $SU(3)_C$ for color/leptocolor $SU(3)_C\times SU(3)_{\ell C}$ confining gauge symmetry. Standard model leptons, equipped with inherited Yukawa couplings, make then their appearance at the intermediate (gauge protected) $SU(3)_C\times SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ trinification stage as three pre-lepton composites. The addition of an exclusively prescribed (on anomaly free and Pauli exclusion grounds) spontaneously broken $SU(3)_F$ horizontal link to the unification chain, in the spirit of "One three to rule them all", strikingly preserves the anti-symmetric structure of the single family fermionic wave function. The threefold quark/lepton (spectators + composites) flavor chiral representation is then necessarily supplemented by a trinification singlet composite Majorana neutrino. The scheme serendipitously predicts a novel anomaly free lepto/dark portal.

Possible New Species of Quarks and Hadrons

Abstract:Assuming that the strong interactions are mediated by a color-SU(3) gauge theory, we consider unusual possibilities for the constituents. The simplest possibility, "shiny" quarks, is that some new quarks are not triplets under color. We analyze the production and signatures for this possibility. Special attention is drawn to the spectroscopy of hadrons containing shiny quarks, some of which are absolutely stable. A more complicated (and possibly deeper dynamically) idea is that of "echo" quarks. These result when the unbroken color SU(3) arises from the breakdown of a larger SU(3) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} SU(3) gauge symmetry. The dynamical motivations for this speculation and the distinctive phenomena that follow from it are analyzed. We find that there is no evidence against echo quarks of quite low mass (\ensuremath{\gtrsim} 2 GeV), which might be produced at present-day accelerators.

Abstract:It has been recognized recently that there is a remarkable empirical relation between lepton and quark mixing angles, theta_{12} + theta_C \approx pi/4. If not accidental, it should testify for yet uncovered new relationship between the fundamental twin particles in nature which only differ in their ability to feel color. The nontrivial structure which is presumed to exist behind the empirical relation is named as ``quark-lepton complementarity''. In this talk, I review the idea at the kind request of the organizer. Starting from pedagogical discussions of bimaximal mixing, which likely to be involved in the whole picture, I try to give a flavor of the new field which is still in rapid development. Toward the more balanced knowledges of flavor mixing in lepton and quark sectors, I describe a promising way for precision measurement of theta_{12} which utilizes solar and reactor neutrinos.

Quark Confinement for Multi-Quark Systems -- Application to Fully-Charmed Tetraquarks

Abstract:A new color basis system and confinement mechanism for multi-quark systems are proposed according to the string-type picture of QCD. The color string configurations in the strong coupling QCD are implemented in the set of color basis states. The extended color Hilbert space for $QQ\bar Q\bar Q$ systems includes a ''hidden color'' state, which mixes with two-meson states $Q\bar Q+Q\bar Q$, This mixing effect leads to an attractive potential sufficient to form a bound state. We apply a realistic Hamiltonian model with the new scheme to fully charmed tetraquark states, $cc\bar c\bar c$, and find a bound and two resonant states, which could potentially correspond to the $cc\bar c\bar c$ tetraquark candidates recently observed in experiments.

On Quark Substructures in an Inspired Unified Model

Abstract:Motivated by the growing attention devoted to the Quantum Chromodynamics sector of the Standard Model, and the recent observations of non-standard hadronic states, a possible substructure of quarks $q_{f}\equiv C_{ij}|k_{i}k_{j}\rangle $ in terms of four colorless bound particles $% k_{i(=0,\ldots,3)}$ "hyperquarks" is investigated in a $SO(10)$-inspired unified model. This aims to define a subtle structure of matter as well as an explanation of some particularities of quarks. Precisley, these hyperquarks $k_{i}$ are bound by a $SU(3)_{h}$ "hyperstrong force" under which they are assumed to be charged. Exploiting certain known data, the masses and the charges of such fundamental particles are discussed along with the emerged four extra quarks $q_{f}\equiv \delta_{ii}|k_{i}k_{i}\rangle $ and three hyperweak bosons $W_{h}$.

An unitarized model for tetraquarks with a color flip-flip potential

Abstract:In this work, a color structure dependent flip-flop potential is developed for the two quarks and two antiquarks system. Then, this potential is applied to a microscopic quark model which, by integrating the internal degrees of freedom, is transformed into a model of mesons with non-local interactions. With this, the T matrix for the system is constructed and meson-meson scattering is studied. Tetraquarks states, interpreted as poles of of the T matrix, both bound states and resonances, are found. Special emphasis is given to the truly exotic $qq\bar{Q}\bar{Q}$ system, but some results for the crypto-exotic $qQ\bar{q}\bar{Q}$ are also presented.

Abstract:In this talk, I will present the status of lepton flavor physics in composite Higgs models with partial compositeness in the light of recent data in the lepton sector. I will consider anarchic flavor setups, scenarios with flavor symmetries, and minimal incarnations of the see-saw mechanism that naturally predict non-negligible lepton compositeness. The focus will be on lepton flavor violating processes, dipole moments, and on probes of lepton flavor universality, all providing stringent tests of partial compositeness. The expected size of effects in the different approaches to lepton flavor and the corresponding constraints will be discussed, including "UV complete", effective, and holographic descriptions.

Abstract:We extend our proposal that major universality classes of hadronic matter can be understood, and in favorable cases calculated, directly in the microscopic quark variables, to allow for a splitting between strange and light quark masses. A surprisingly simple but apparently viable picture emerges, featuring essentially three phases, distinguished by whether strangeness is conserved (standard nuclear matter), conserved modulo 2 (hypernuclear matter), or locked to color (color flavor locking). These are separated by sharp phase transitions. There is also, potentially, a quark phase matching hadronic {ital K} condensation. The smallness of the secondary gap in two-flavor color superconductivity corresponds to the disparity between the primary dynamical energy scales of QCD and the much smaller energy scales of nuclear physics. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}
A Simple Model of Pentaquarks

Abstract:We describe pentaquarks as baryo-charmonia with a color octet $c\bar{c}$ core bonded to a color octet three-quark system. Fermi statistics of the light quark cloud allows to describe two pentaquark triplets: a lower one, well supported by experiment, and a higher one with strangeness. For the time being, the lowest line of the strange triplet has been experimentally identified in a $3\sigma$ peak. Data also suggest (at least) two different production mechanisms for pentaquarks. We show how this can be described in the proposed scheme.

Abstract:One of the most challenging hurdles to the construction of realistic composite Higgs models is the generation of Yukawa couplings for the Standard Model fermions. This problem can be successfully addressed in approximate conformal theories that admit a marginally relevant mixing between composite fermionic operators and the SM fermions. I argue that SU(3) gauge theories with light Dirac flavors in the fundamental representation feature all the ingredients under theoretical control, including a strongly-coupled IR fixed point, composite partners for all Standard Model fermions, absence of Landau poles at low energy, and a realistic phenomenology. These models acquire the status of compelling UV-completions of the SM if some spin-1/2 baryon operator has scaling dimension close to 2.5 within the conformal window, a possibility that can only be assessed via non-perturbative methods like lattice QCD. A distinctive collider signature is long-lived hadrons with fractional charges.Vacuum alignment is controlled by the Nambu-Goldstone bosons of the coset SU(4) × SU(4)/SU(4). With a technically natural choice of mixing for the top-quark, the exotic scalars with electro-weak charges acquire large positive masses and a compelling custodial-symmetric phenomenology is obtained. In the decoupling limit the symmetry breaking pattern effectively reduces to SU(4) → Sp(4) with a light Higgs.

Abstract:In the early 1960s particle physicists found that they had wandered into a jungle. They were confronted by a bewildering array of particles called hadrons that did not appear to follow any discernible pattern. Murray Gell-Mann eventually tamed this hadronic jungle by proposing that all hadrons are made up of combinations of more fundamental particles called quarks: mesons contain a quark and an antiquark, while baryons contain three quarks. Some physicists found this bold hypothesis difficult to swallow at first, but for four decades these two basic "body plans"have been more or less adequate to accommodate the many new hadrons that have turned up in experiments.

Abstract:Quark-hadron duality addresses some of the most fundamental issues in strong interaction physics, in particular the nature of the transition from the perturbative to non-perturbative regions of QCD. I summarize recent developments in quark-hadron duality in lepton-hadron scattering, and outline how duality can be studied at future high-luminosity facilities such as Jefferson Lab at 12 GeV, or an electron-hadron collider such as EPIC.

Abstract:We study the properties of heavy fermions in the vector-like representation of the electroweak gauge group SU(2)w x U(l)(Y) with Yukawa couplings to the standard model Higgs boson. Applying the renormalization group analysis, we discuss the effects of heavy fermions to the vacuum stability bound and the triviality bound on the mass of the Higgs boson. We also discuss the interesting possibility that the Higgs particle is composed of the top quark and heavy fermions. The bound on the composite Higgs mass is estimated using the method of Bardeen, Hill and Lindner (Phys. Rev. D41 (1990) 1647), 150 GeV less than or equal to m(H) less than or equal to 450 GeV.

Abstract:We briefly review a variety of theoretical and phenomenological indications for the probable importance of powerful diquark correlations in hadronic physics. We demonstrate that the bulk of light hadron spectroscopy can be organized using three simple hypotheses: Regge-Chew-Frautschi mass formulae, feebleness of spin-orbit forces, and energetic distinctions among a few different diquark configurations. Those hypotheses can be implemented in a semi-classical model of color flux tubes, extrapolated down from large orbital angular momentum $L$. We discuss refinements of the model to include the effects of tunneling, mass loading, and internal excitations. We also discern effects of diquark correlations in observed patterns of baryon decays. Many predictions and suggestions for further work appear.

Abstract:In the simplest (non-quiver) unified theories, fermion families are often treated sequentially and a flavor symmetry may act similarly. As an alternative with non-sequential flavor symmetry, we consider a model based on the group (T'*Z_2)_global * [SU(3)^4]_local which combines the predictions of T' flavor symmetry with the features of a unified quiver gauge theory. The model accommodates the relationships between mixing angles separately for neutrinos, and for quarks, which have been previously predicted with T'. This quiver unification theory makes predictions of several additional gauge bosons and bifundamental fermions at the TeV scale.

Abstract:Strong dynamics for composite Higgs models predict spin-1 resonances which are expected to be in the same mass range as the usually considered top-partners. We study here QCD-coloured vector and axial-vector states stemming from composite Higgs dynamics in several relevant models based on an underlying gauge-fermion description. These states can come as triplet, sextet and octet representation. All models considered have a colour octet vector state in common which can be singly produced at hadron colliders as it mixes with the gluon. We explore the rich and testable phenomenology of these coloured spin-1 states at the LHC and future colliders.
