Abstract:The theoretical ferroelectric polarization of the low-temperature (monoclinic, P21) phase and the high-temperature (hexagonal, P63) phase of hydroxyapatite Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 is calculated based on the density functional theory (DFT). In the monoclinic structure, the value of ferroelectric polarization is found to be 9.87 μC cm−2 along the [001] direction. In the hexagonal structure, the ferroelectric polarization is 7.05 μC cm−2 along the [001] direction. The main contribution to the electric polarization comes from ordered hydroxyl OH− anions for both phases, although the inorganic Ca5(PO4)3 apatite framework also gives a non-negligible contribution. A detailed analysis of ferroelectric polarization and structural change of the hydroxyapatite is presented for a better understanding of this important biomaterial.

Abstract:It is demonstrated that hydroxyapatite, a type of calcium phosphate commonly found in bone tissue, retains surprisingly large stored charge when synthesized electrochemically from aqueous solution. Thin films of hydroxyapatite formed on titanium and stainless steel electrodes were found to display giant polarization with quasi-permanent stored charge in excess of 70 000 microcoulombs per square centimeter. The polarization of the hydroxyapatite film develops during synthesis as a result of field-induced changes in concentration of ionic reactants in the electrical double layer near the electrode surface. This novel mechanism of polarization during synthesis provides much larger stored charge than what is possible by postsynthesis poling of ferroelectric or electret materials. The polarized hydroxyapatite films on titanium are shown through in vitro experiments to hold promise in stimulating bone growth and may enable new applications in ion exchange separations, drug delivery, or energy storage.
Optoelectronics and defect levels in hydroxyapatite by first-principles

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is an important component of mammal bones and teeth, being widely used in prosthetic implants. Despite the importance of HAp in medicine, several promising applications involving this material e.g. in photo-catalysis), depend on how well we understand its fundamental properties. Among the ones that are either unknown or not known accurately we have the electronic band structure and all that relates to it, including the band gap width. We employ state-of-the-art methodologies, including density hybrid-functional theory and many-body perturbation theory within the GW approximation, to look at the optoelectronic properties of HAp. These methods are also applied to the calculation of defect levels. We find that the use of a mix of (semi-)local and exact exchange in the exchange-correlation functional, brings a drastic improvement to the band structure. Important side-effects include improvements in the description of dielectric and optical properties, not only involving conduction band (excited) states, but also the valence. We find that the highly dispersive conduction band bottom of HAp originates from anti-bonding $\sigma^{*}$ states along the $\cdots\textrm{OH-OH-}\cdots$ infinite chain, suggesting the formation of a conductive 1D-ice phase. The choice of the exchange-correlation treatment to the calculation of defect levels was also investigated by using the OH-vacancy as testing-model. We find that donor and acceptor transitions obtained within semi-local DFT differ from those of hybrid-DFT by almost 2 eV. Such a large discrepancy emphasizes the importance of using a high-quality description of the electron-electron interactions in the calculation of electronic and optical transitions of defects in HAp.

And then conclusions were drawn and future challenges were discussed. The review is expected to provide theoretical guidance for the development of bioactive HA with special structures and functions.

Abstract:Atomistic simulation techniques have been employed in order to investigate key issues related to intrinsic defects and a variety of dopants from trivalent and tetravalent ions. The most favorable intrinsic defect is determined to be a scheme involving calcium and hydroxyl vacancies. It is found that trivalent ions have an energetic preference for the Ca site, while tetravalent ions can enter P sites. Charge compensation is predicted to occur basically via three schemes. In general, the charge compensation via the formation of calcium vacancies is more favorable. Trivalent dopant ions are more stable than tetravalent dopants.

Coexistence of spontaneous polarization and superconductivity in hole-doped oxyhydrides ATiO_2H (A=K, Rb, Cs): first-principles study

Abstract:The polar metal is a material that hosts both polar distortion and metallicity. Such a material is expected to show exotic magneto-electric phenomena if superconducts. Here, we theoretically explore ferroelectric and superconducting properties in a series of perovskite-type oxyhydrides ATiO$_2$H (A=K, Rb, Cs) under hole-doping conditions using the first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory. Our simulation shows that these compounds host spontaneous polarization and superconductivity at optimal doping concentration. The unusual coexistence of superconductivity and large polarization (~100 ${\mu}$C/cm$^2$) originates from weak coupling of the polar distortion and superconducting states, the reason of which is separation of the displaced atoms and spacially confined metallic carriers. Besides, the superconductivity is enhanced by the unique electronic properties near the valence band maximum: quartic band dispersion with a sizable contribution of hydrogen 1s states. Our study thus feature the oxyhydrides as possible model polar superconducting systems, which may be utilizable for future magneto-electric devices.

Abstract:The first-principles calculations based on density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation were carried out to investigate the fundamental features of hydroxyapatite, the primary constituent of human bone and tooth, for use in light-curable dental composites. Moreover, the influence of strontium incorporation into hydroxyapatite on structural, electronic and optical properties of hydroxyapatite was comprehensively studied while we believe this substitution can promote radiopacity and remineralization ability of apatite. After geometry optimization, the computed structural parameters are found to yield a satisfactory agreement with the reported experimental results indicating the accuracy of the calculations. The elastic characteristics demonstrate that both hexagonal apatites possess higher Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio compared silica glass which is known as traditional filler used in dental composites. The analysis of the electronic density of states reveals that some variation in macroscopic mechanical properties can arise from difference between d state energy of calcium and strontium elements. Moreover, the origins of optical features affecting the curing depth of composite have been discussed in terms of the dielectric function and refractive index. The weak energy loss in the range of 3–3.5 eV demonstrates that these biocompatible fillers can provide an increased curing depth when are used in a UV-LED cured restorative dental materials.

Abstract:Macroscopically, confined electron gases at polar oxide interfaces are rationalized within the simple "polar catastrophe" model. At the microscopic level, however, many other effects such as electric fields, structural distortions and quantum-mechanical interactions enter into play. Here, we show how to bridge the gap between these two length scales, by combining the accuracy of first-principles methods with the conceptual simplicity of model Hamiltonian approaches. To demonstrate our strategy, we address the equilibrium distribution of the compensating free carriers at polar LaAlO(3)/SrTiO(3) interfaces. Remarkably, a model including only calculated bulk properties of SrTiO(3) and no adjustable parameters accurately reproduces our full first-principles results. Our strategy provides a unified description of charge compensation mechanisms in SrTiO(3)-based systems.

Abstract:The results are based on the first principle modeling and calculations of hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanostructures, especially in ordered hexagonal phase. HAP structures were studied using Local Density Approximation (LDA) method with calculations of Density of States (DOS) and molecular modeling by HyperChem. Computed data show that monoclinic and hexagonal phases can coexist, especially in the ordered states. Calculated piezoelectric coefficient for hexagonal phase d33 ∼6.4 pm/V is consistent with previously obtained value for monoclinic HAP (15.7 pm/V) and experimental data. The estimated pyroelectric coefficient at the order of γ ∼ 10–100 μC/(m2K) is also in line with experimental data.

Abstract:The water behavior on (001) and (100) crystal faces of hydroxyapatite (HAP) were studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The study showed that the water molecules between the HAP faces were under conditions of strong electrical field and high pressure, and hence formed 2–3 well-organized water layers on the crystal surfaces. These structured water layers had ice-like features. Compared with the crystallographic [100] direction of HAP, the polarity along the [001] direction was stronger, which resulted in more structured water layers on the surface. The interaction of water molecules with the calcium and phosphate sites at the HAP-water interface was also studied. The results indicated the multiple pathways of water adsorption onto the HAP surfaces. This study revealed the formation and the detailed structure of water layers on HAP surfaces and suggested that the interfacial water played an important role in stabilizing the HAP particles in aqueous solutions.

Abstract:In the present work, cation doped hydroxyapatite (HAP) synthesized by sol-gel method. The crystal structure and crystallinity of samples confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and roughness of prepared samples investigated through the atomic force microscopy. The changes in the dielectric with temperature and frequency are analyzed. Temperature-dependent dielectric property was studied and confirmed that the relaxation occurs with non-Debye-type relaxation. Mechanical properties such as hardness, yield strength, and flexural strength of the ion-doped HAP are studied. The significant improvements were shown in the mechanical property with ion doping for various concentrations.

Abstract:Bismuth (Bi(III)) substitution in hydroxyapatite (HAp) lattice confers unique properties such as antibacterial, catalytic, radiosensitization, and conductive properties while preserving the innate bioactivity of HAp. Understanding local structural changes upon Bi3+ substitution is essential for controlling the stability and optimizing the properties of HAp. Despite numerous experimental studies, the precise substitution behaviors, such as site preference and structural stability, remain incompletely understood. In this study, the substitution behavior of Bi(III) into the HAp lattice with formula of Ca9Bi(PO4)6(O)(OH) was investigated via first-principles simulation by implementing density functional theory. Energy calculations showed Bi3+ preferentially occupies the Ca(2) site with an energy difference of ~0.02 eV/atom. Local structure analysis revealed higher bond population values and oxygen coordination shift from 7 to 6 for the Ca(2) site, attributed to the greater covalent interactions and its flexible environment accommodating the bulky Bi3+ ion and its stereochemically active lone pair. This work provides the first comprehensive investigation on Bi3+ ion substitution site preference in HAp using first-principles simulations.

Dual response of osteoblast activity and antibacterial properties of polarized strontium substituted hydroxyapatite-Barium strontium titanate composites with controlled strontium substitution

Abstract:To mimic the electrical properties of natural bone, controlled strontium substitution of both hydroxyapatite and ferroelectric barium titanate were achieved by mixing in the ratio 30:70 by weight. The composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy to investigate the phase composition and microstructure of the composites. Unpolarized and polarized strontium hydroxyapatite (SrHA)-barium strontium titanate (BST) composites with controlled degree of Sr substitution were examined, including 5SrHA-5BST (5% Sr substitution in both components) and 10SrHA-10BST composites. The 10SrHA-10BST composite showed a higher osteoblast activity, as observed from the cell viability studies performed using CCK-8 assay. The polarized composites showed promise against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria by minimizing the adhesion and growth of bacteria, as compared with their unpolarized counterparts. The polarized 10SrHA-10BST was found to be superior than all other composites. As a result, the approach of polarization of SrHA-BST composites has been found to be an effective bone substitute material in controlled enhancement of osteoblast growth with simultaneous reduction of bacterial infection.
Effects of Sr and Mg doping on elastic, mechanical, and optical properties of hydroxyapatite: A first-principles study

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HAp), with the chemical formula Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 , is a bioactive ceramic material typically used in the treatment of bone defects owing to the excellent biocompatibility and the ability to bond with bone tissues. Mechanical properties of HAp have drawn pronounced attention because of the crucial roles in the medical applications. Based on density functional theory (DFT), this work reports the structural, formation energy, mechanical, Vickers hardness, electronic properties, and optical properties of hydroxyapatite (HAp), strontium-substituted HAp (Sr-HAp), and magnesium-substituted HAp (Mg-HAp). The results reveal that the Sr 2+ and Mg 2+ ions mainly replace the Ca 2+ ion at the Ca-1 site in HAp. Resistance to hydrostatic compression followed the order Mg-HAp > HAp > Sr-HAp. Sr-HAp has the capability to enhance thermal shock resistance and lattice thermal conductivity. In addition, the electronic properties of HAp change upon substitutional Sr 2+ and Mg 2+ doping. In comparison with pristine HAp, the energy gap of Sr-doped HAp relatively increases, whereas that of Mg-doped HAp decreases. Nevertheless, both Sr-HAp and Mg-HAp remain insulators. Intriguingly, Sr-HAp possesses the improved hardness by 11.31 % owing to the hybridization of the Sr (4 p ) and O (2 p ) states, which contributed to its high shear modulus and high hardness. Beyond that, we further investigate their optical properties. The presence of Mg states at approximately 10 eV in the conduction band leads to enhanced absorption within the 14 – 20 eV for Mg-doped HAp. Similarly, the presence of a deep Sr(4 p ) level in Sr-HAp amplifies absorption within the 20–25 eV range. These findings have raised a potential avenue for selectively boosting the optical absorption of HAp, thus improving its photocatalytic properties.

Nano-friction behavior and deformation study of hydroxyapatite in ultra-precision polishing process

Abstract:Context: In order to study the effect of ultra-precision machining on the surface quality of hydroxyapatite semiconductor materials as well as the material removal mechanism of hydroxyapatite, the mechanical polishing behaviors of hydroxyapatite at different polishing depths were studied by molecular dynamics method. The results show that the subsurface damage of hydroxyapatite increases with increasing polishing depth. The polishing temperature and the polishing force showed a positive correlation with the polishing depth, and the variation of the polishing force was related to the accumulation-release effect of the potential energy of hydroxyapatite material. In addition, the variation of stresses in hydroxyapatite during polishing is mainly influenced by the thermal softening effect. With a smaller polishing depth, the hydroxyapatite semiconductor material has fewer structural defects, fewer atoms undergoing phase transitions, lower surface roughness, and better surface quality. Therefore, to ensure the long-lasting service life of hydroxyapatite semiconductor materials, a small polishing depth should be used in ultra-precision machining. Additionally, this study also provides a theoretical reference for future research on the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite-based composites. Methods: A Large-Scale Atomic/Molecular Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS) was utilized to perform molecular dynamics simulations. The output was visualized and analyzed by the Open Visualization Tools (OVITO) software. The intermolecular interactions were described by the polymer consistent force-field and the 12/6 Lennard-Jones potential functions. The workpiece was polished under a micro-canonical ensemble with the temperature settled at 300 K. Periodic boundary conditions were adopted and the velocity-Verlet algorithm was used to integrate the atomic motion with a timestep of 0.1 femtoseconds (fs).
In silico study on probing atomistic insights into structural stability and tensile properties of Fe-doped hydroxyapatite single crystals

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HA, Ca10PO4(OH)2) is a widely explored material in the experimental domain of biomaterials science, because of its resemblance with natural bone minerals. Specifically, in the bioceramic community, HA doped with multivalent cations (e.g., Mg2+, Fe2+, Sr2+, etc.) has been extensively investigated in the last few decades. Experimental research largely established the critical role of dopant content on mechanical and biocompatibility properties. The plethora of experimental measurements of mechanical response on doped HA is based on compression or indentation testing of polycrystalline materials. Such measurements, and more importantly the computational predictions of mechanical properties of single crystalline (doped) HA are scarce. On that premise, the present study aims to build atomistic models of Fe2+-doped HA with varying Fe content (10, 20, 30, and 40 mol%) and to explore their uniaxial tensile response, by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In the equilibrated unit cell structures, Ca(1) sites were found to be energetically favourable for Fe2+ substitution. The local distribution of Fe2+ ions significantly affects the atomic partial charge distribution and chemical symmetry surrounding the functional groups, and such signatures are found in the MD analyzed IR spectra. The significant decrease in the intensity of the IR bands found in the Fe-doped HA together with band splitting, because of the symmetry changes in the crystal structure. Another important objective of this work is to computationally predict the mechanical response of doped HA in their single crystal format. An interesting observation is that the elastic anisotropy of undoped HA was not compromised with Fe-doping. Tensile strength (TS) is systematically reduced in doped HA with Fe2+ dopant content and a decrease in TS with temperature can be attributed to the increased thermal agitation of atoms at elevated temperatures. The physics of the tensile response was rationalized in terms of the strain dependent changes in covalent/ionic bond framework (Ca-P distance, P-O bond strain, O-P-O angular strain, O-H bond distance). Further, the dynamic changes in covalent bond network were energetically analyzed by calculating the changes in O-H and P-O bond vibrational energy. Summarizing, the current work establishes our foundational understanding of the atomistic phenomena involved in the structural stability and tensile response of Fe-doped HA single crystals.
Accurate Force Field Parameters and pH Resolved Surface Models for Hydroxyapatite to Understand Structure, Mechanics, Hydration, and Biological Interfaces

Abstract:Mineralization of bone and teeth involves interactions between biomolecules and hydroxyapatite. Associated complex interfaces and processes remain difficult to analyze at the 1 to 100 nm scale using current laboratory techniques, and prior models for atomistic simulations are limited in the representation of chemical bonding, surface chemistry, and interfacial interactions. This work introduces an accurate force field along with pH-resolved surface models for hydroxyapatite to represent chemical bonding, structural, surface, interfacial, and mechanical properties in quantitative agreement with experiment. The accuracy is orders of magnitude higher in comparison to earlier models to facilitate quantitative monitoring of inorganic-biological assembly. The force field is integrated into the CHARMM, AMBER, OPLS-AA, PCFF, and INTERFACE force fields to enable realistic simulations of apatite-biological systems of any composition and ionic strength. Specifically, the parameters reproduce lattice constants (<0.5% deviation), IR spectrum, cleavage energies, immersion energies in water (<5% deviation), and elastic constants (<10% deviation) of hydroxyapatite in comparison to experiment. Interactions between mineral, water, and organic compounds are represented by standard combination rules in the force field without additional adjustable parameters and shown to achieve quantitative accuracy. Surface models for common (001), (010), (020), (101) facets and nanocrystals are introduced as a function of pH on the basis of extensive experimental data. New insight into surface and immersion energies, the structure of aqueous interfaces, density profiles, and superficial dissolution is described. Mechanisms of specific binding of peptides, drugs, and mineralization can be analyzed and the force field is extensible to substituted and defective apatites as well as to other calcium phosphate phases.

In addition, a characteristic of a ferroelectric is the presence of domains or states with different symmetry equivalent orientations of spontaneous polarization that are switchable with large enough applied electric field, a nonlinear property that makes it useful for applications in nonvolatile memory devices. Central to these properties of a ferroelectric are the phase transitions it undergoes as a function of temperature that involve lowering of the symmetry of its high temperature centrosymmetric paraelectric phase. Ferroelectricity arises from a delicate balance between short and long-range interatomic interactions, and hence the resulting properties are quite sensitive to chemistry, strains, and electric charges associated with its interface with substrate and electrodes. First-principles density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations have been very effective in capturing this and predicting material and environment specific properties of ferroelectrics, leading to fundamental insights into origins of ferroelectricity in oxides and chalcogenides uncovering a precise picture of electronic hybridization, topology, and mechanisms. However, use of DFT in molecular dynamics for detailed prediction of ferroelectric phase transitions and associated temperature dependent properties has been limited due to large length and time scales of the processes involved. To this end, it is quite appealing to start with input from DFT calculations and construct material-specific models that are realistic yet simple for use in large-scale simulations while capturing the relevant microscopic interactions quantitatively. In this Account, we first summarize the insights obtained into chemical mechanisms of ferroelectricity using first-principles DFT calculations. We then discuss the principles of construction of first-principles model Hamiltonians for ferroelectric phase transitions in perovskite oxides, which involve coarse-graining in time domain by integrating out high frequency phonons. Molecular dynamics simulations of the resulting model are shown to give quantitative predictions of material-specific ferroelectric transition behavior in bulk as well as nanoscale ferroelectric structures. A free energy landscape obtained through coarse-graining in real-space provides deeper understanding of ferroelectric transitions, domains, and states with inhomogeneous order and points out the key role of microscopic coupling between phonons and strain. We conclude with a discussion of the multiscale modeling strategy elucidated here and its application to other materials such as shape memory alloys.

Abstract:Ferroelectrics and ionic conductors are important functional materials, each supporting a plethora of applications in information and energy technology. The underlying physics governing their functional properties is ionic motion, and yet studies of ferroelectrics and ionic conductors are often considered separate fields. Based on first-principles calculations and deep-learning-assisted large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, we report ferroelectric-switching-promoted oxygen ion transport in HfO2 , a wide-band-gap insulator with both ferroelectricity and ionic conductivity. Applying a unidirectional bias can activate multiple switching pathways in ferroelectric HfO2 , leading to polar-antipolar phase cycling that appears to contradict classical electrodynamics. This apparent conflict is resolved by the geometric-quantum-phase nature of electric polarization that carries no definite direction. Our molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate bias-driven successive ferroelectric transitions facilitate ultrahigh oxygen ion mobility at moderate temperatures, highlighting the potential of combining ferroelectricity and ionic conductivity for the development of advanced materials and technologies. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.131.256801 © 2023 American Physical Society
