Abstract:The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is still a major health problem. It causes millions of deaths and a high morbidity rate all over the world. Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) binds strongly to spike protein. [ 1 ] ACE2 is found in the heart, vessels, lungs, central nervous system, kidneys, and adipose tissue. [ 1 ] The virus is assumed to cause cardiac injury via ACE2. [ 1 ] However, the significance and extent of this potential involvement is currently unclear. [ 1 ] Cardiovascular damage in COVID-19 occurs as thrombosis, acute cardiac and microvascular injury. [ 2 ] Acute cardiac injury in COVID-19 patients can be defined as increases in cardiac biomarkers, pathological electrocardiographic changes and decreased cardiac function. [ 2 ] Cardiac injury was seen in 8% to 12% of hospitalized patients. [ 3 ] Cardiac injury due to non-ischemic myocardial events other than myocarditis can be listed as serious respiratory tract infection, sepsis, hypoxia, systemic inflammation, cardiac adrenergic hyperstimulation, and pulmonary thromboembolism. [ 2 ] Information regarding other cardiovascular events in COVID-19 is still limited.
