Abstract:Fullerenes, as characteristic carbon nanomaterials, offer significant potential for diverse applications due to their structural diversity and tunable properties. Numerous isomers can exist for a specific fullerene size, yet a comprehensive understanding of their fundamental properties remains elusive. In this study, we construct an up-to-date computational database for C20-C60 fullerenes, consisting of 5770 structures, and calculate 12 fundamental properties using DFT, including stability (binding energy), electronic properties (HOMO-LUMO gap), and solubility (partition coefficient logP). Our findings reveal that the HOMO-LUMO gap weakly correlates with both binding energy and logP, indicating that electronic properties can be tailored for specific uses without affecting stability or solubility. In addition, we introduce a set of novel topological features and geometric measures to investigate structure-property relationships. For the first time, we apply atom, bond, and hexagon features to effectively predict the stability of C20-C60 fullerenes, surpassing the conventional qualitative isolated pentagon rule, and demonstrating their robust transferability to larger-size fullerenes beyond C60. Our work offers guidance for optimizing fullerenes as electron acceptors in organic solar cells and lays a foundational understanding of their functionalization and applications in energy conversion and nanomaterial sciences.

Abstract:Recently, nonclassical fullerene derivatives C66H4 and C70Cl6, which both contain two negatively curved moieties of heptagons, have been successfully synthesized. Inspired by these experimental achievements, the structural and electronic properties of C66H4, C70Cl6, 66H4, 66H4, 70Cl6, and 70Cl6 were systematical studied through density functional theory calculations in this work. Our results show that the reduction of the front molecular orbital gap of fullerene derivatives occurs with the introduction of Li and F atoms. After quantitative analysis of back-donations of charge between an encapsulated atom and an external carbon cage, it is found that C66H4 and C70Cl6 prefer to act as electron acceptors. It is interesting to note that the strong covalent nature of the interactions between a F atom and a carbon cage is observed, whereas the weak covalent and strong ionic interactions occur between a Li atom and a carbon cage. On the other hand, according to the first hyperpolarizability results, the encapsulation of the Li atom enhances the nonlinear optical response of fullerene derivatives. This work provides a strategy to improve nonlinear optical properties of C66H4 and C70Cl6, reveals the internal mechanism of the contribution from Li and F atoms to endohedral fullerene derivatives, and will contribute to the designation of endohedral fullerene derivative devices.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Anisotropic mechanical properties of monolayer fullerene network: An interplay between two types of interfullerene bonds

Abstract:As a newly synthesised two-dimensional (2D) carbon material, mechanical properties of the monolayer fullerene network or, namely, quasi-hexagonal-phase fullerene (qHP C60) [Hou et al., Nature, 606, 507-510 (2022)] are almost unexplored. In this work, first-principles calculations were conducted to reveal the elastic properties and fracture behaviours of monolayer qHP C60, both of which are strongly anisotropic. Specifically, the Young’s modulus (166 GPa) and the Poisson’s ratio (0.12) in the minimum direction of monolayer qHP C60 are both smaller than any other synthesized 2D carbon crystal materials. In addition, the qHP C60 monolayer stretched along the direction of the [2 + 2] cycloaddition bond is found to possess a larger tensile strength (fracture strain) and exhibit a more complicated crack pattern. The robustness of monolayer qHP C60 under mechanical loading and the sensitivity of its band gap to loading suggest that the strain engineering is an effective method to modulate the electronic properties of monolayer qHP C60, which is found to be especially more efficient when the loading is perpendicular to the [2 + 2] cycloaddition bond. These findings suggest that monolayer qHP C60 could be a potential candidate in developing flexible 2D electronic devices with strain-tunable performance.

Abstract:In this work, we comprehensively study the mechanical properties of the newly synthesised monolayer quasi-hexagonal-phase fullerene (qHPF) membrane [Nature \textbf{606}, 507-510 (2022)] under uniaxial tension by using quantum mechanical density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with a machine-learned neuroevolution potential (NEP). The elastic properties and fracture behaviours of monolayer qHPF are found to be strongly anisotropic due to the different properties between the inter-fullerene C-C single bonds and [2 + 2] cycloaddition bonds. Moreover, the tensile strength and fracture strain of monolayer qHPF are much smaller than those of any other existing two-dimensional (2D) carbon crystals. The very small tensile strength or fracture strain is ascribed to the inhomogeneous deformation of the stretched monolayer qHPF, which originates from the stiffness difference between the soft inter-fullerene bonds and the rigid intra-fullerene bonds. Compared with DFT calculations at the ground state, the NEP-based extensive MD simulations predict a much smaller tensile strength and fracture strain for monolayer qHPF due to their consideration of the effects of temperature and membrane size. Our work not only reveals the underlying mechanism of the fracture behaviours of monolayer fullerene networks from an atomistic perspective, but also shows the effectiveness and accuracy of the NEP approach in determining the mechanical properties of 2D materials in the realistic situations.
Thermal Conductivity Reduction in Carbon Nanotube by Fullerene Encapsulation: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in their pristine form have high thermal conductivity whose further improvement has attracted a lot of interest. Some theoretical studies have suggested that the thermal conductivity of a (10,10) SWCNT is dramatically enhanced by C60 fullerene encapsulation. However, recent experiments on SWCNT bundles show that fullerene encapsulation leads to a reduction rather than an increase in thermal conductivity. Here, we employ three different molecular dynamics methods to study the influence of C60 encapsulation on heat transport in a (10,10) SWCNT. All the three methods consistently predict a reduction of the thermal conductivity of (10,10) SWCNT upon C60 encapsulation by 20%−30%, in agreement with experimental results on bundles of SWCNTs. We demonstrate that there is a simulation artifact in the Green-Kubo method which gives anomalously large thermal conductivity from artificial convection. Our results show that the C60 molecules conduct little heat compared to the outer SWCNT and reduce the phonon mean free paths of the SWCNT by inducing extra phonon scattering. We also find that the thermal conductivity of a (10,10) SWCNT monotonically decreases with increasing filling ratio of C60 molecules.

Abstract:Different fullerenes play a different regulatory role in the second‐order NLO response of DAE. An interesting regulatory effect is discussed from the perspectives of β value and switch efficiency. The reasons behind it are analyzed, providing a theoretical guidance for designing materials with high NLO switch efficiency and efficiency reversal. Fullerene is a material with good electrical conductivity and thermal stability, and its size is an important factor to influence its photoelectric property. In this work, effect of fullerene size (C20, C60, and C70) on nonlinear optical (NLO) switchable molecule diarylethene (DAE) was explored. In the aspect of molecular NLO properties, it could be found that the static first hyperpolarizability βtot of Cx‐O (x=20, 60, 70) was larger than that of Cx‐C (x=20, 60, 70), and the βtot difference between open‐ring and closed‐ring structure increased from 19 to 1431 au with the size of fullerene increased. Especially for C70‐DAE, its largest contrast of βtot values between open‐ring and closed‐ring structure suggested its superiority among three groups of NLO switchable complexes. The result could attribute to C70‐O exhibits a strong dipole characteristic, whereas C70‐C displays a weak dipole characteristic. By analyzing dynamic first hyperpolarizability, it could be found large NLO response mainly depended on molecular dipole characteristics. As a result, for C70‐DAE, βHRS of open‐ring structure was still larger than that of closed‐ring structure. However, the dynamic first hyperpolarizability βHRS of open‐ring structure was smaller than that of closed‐ring structure in both C20‐DAE and C60‐DAE. The switching efficiency was reversed.

Abstract:A series of fullerene acceptors have been selected for the systematic study of their electron-transporting properties on a standardized field-effect transistor (FET) platform. It was found that small structural alternations, functional patterns, and number of addends on fullerene derivatives strongly affect their mobilities. The measured charge mobilities correlate well with structural features of these materials and provide useful insights into designing better fullerene-based semiconductors for organic electronics.

Abstract:Single-molecule techniques can reveal new fundamental physical and chemical effects of matters at the single-molecule scale, and build functional devices based on molecular properties to achieve specific optoelectronic functions. So far, various molecules have been introduced into single-molecule junctions to investigate their unique properties at the single-molecule scale. Among them, fullerene molecules, as a unique class of functional materials, provide infinite opportunities for fabricating various single-molecule devices. The combination of fullerenes and single-molecule electronic techniques not only realizes the discovery of new principles and new properties at the single-molecule scale, but also leads to the functionalization of single-molecule devices. This perspective discusses the properties of single fullerene molecules, such as charge transport, spin, nanomechanics, thermoelectricity, etc., introduces prototype functional devices based on the properties of single fullerene molecules, and provides directions for further research in this field.

Mechanistic Exploration of Determinants for the Fullerene@FASnI3 Interface Stability: Surface Termination and Monovalent Cation Rotation

Abstract:The investigation into the interfacial properties between fullerene compounds and Sn-based perovskites (Sn-PVSK) holds extraordinary significance for advancing efficient and stable Pb-free perovskite solar cells. This study is the first theoretical exploration to examine their interfacial properties using Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and trajectory analysis methods with C60@FASnI3 as a representative system. The impact of surface termination and FA+ rotation on interface stability has been assessed. Within the 10 ps AIMD simulations, the C60@FAI interface demonstrates greater stability compared to the C60@SnI interface due to the robustness of the single-bonded I on the FAI termination and weaker C60-FAI interactions. The C60@SnI interface has poor stability, but it can be enhanced by controlling the FA+ rotation, achieving optimal stability at a 45° rotation along the C-H bond axis. This is attributed to minimal hydrogen bond interactions and a reduced steric hindrance. This work not only substantiates the pivotal role of surface termination in maintaining interface stability but, most importantly, also reveals how FA+ rotational dynamics regulate the C60@SnI interface stability, providing valuable insights for further improving the efficiency of Sn-PVSK solar cells.
First-principles studies on the structural and spectral properties of C72 isomers and the chlorinated derivative C72Cl4

Abstract:X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra, as well as the ground-state electronic/geometrical structures of two important isomers of the elusive C72 fullerene family (C2v- and D6d-symmetry, respectively) and the corresponding chlorinated derivative C72Cl4, which are newly captured in the experiment, have been simulated at the density functional theory (DFT) level. Effective changes in the electronic structure and simulated X-ray spectra have been observed after chlorination. Both spectra show strong isomer dependence, therefore the "fingerprints" in the X-ray spectra offer a useful method for isomer identification of the above-mentioned fullerenes. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy of C72Cl4 has also been performed by means of time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations. The simulated UV-vis spectrum is in good agreement with the experimental results. The results of this work can provide valuable information for further experimental and theoretical studies on newly synthesized fullerene isomers and their derivatives by means of X-ray and UV-vis spectroscopy techniques.
Synthesis, Photophysical and Supramolecular Properties of a Π-Conjugated Molecular Crown Containing a Pentagonal Unit: A Model Compound for Fullerene C240

Abstract:The total synthesis of carbon onions is a significant challenge in the fields of materials science and organic chemistry. To date, the synthesis of even a fragment of fullerene C240 and its smallest carbon onion C60@C240 remains poorly explored. Herein, we demonstrate a bottom-up strategy to produce a novel π-extended molecular crown-shaped molecule (MC3) containing curved pentagonal and hexagonal units. This molecular crown represents a curved model compound for fullerene C240 and is fully characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry, UV-vis absorption, and from its emission spectra. Its supramolecular host–guest interaction with fullerene C60 is also investigated. MC3 and C60@MC3 can potentially be employed as seeds or templates for the bottom-up synthesis of fullerene C240 and the carbon onion C60@C240, respectively.
Isomeric and Structural Impacts on Electron Acceptability of Carbon Cages in Atom-Bridged Fullerene Dimers

Abstract:The electrochemical properties of the carbon-bridged fullerene dimers C-121(I), C-121(II), C-121(III), C-131, and C-141 were characterized systematically for the first time in this study. Cyclic voltammogram and differential pulse voltammogram analyses revealed that they first underwent three reversible fullerene-unit-based reduction processes where each of the two carbon cages accepted one electron in each step and then possessed a different deep reduction sequence from the fourth to sixth reduction potentials of the fullerene cages. The electronic interactions between cages in the atom-bridged dimers (e.g., C-60-C-C-60) were found to be different from those of dimers in which two cages were connected directly. Comparison studies of the redox properties of the five dimers revealed that the C-60 dimerization via [5.6]-[6.6] connection influenced the cage electron acceptability much more than that of [5.6]-[5.6] or [6.6]-[6.6] connections And the dimerization with C-70 cages influenced the reduction potentials of dimerized products more potently than that with C-60 cages. Further results from controlled potential electrolysis, high-performance liquid chromatography, matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, ultraviolet absorption spectral analyses demonstrated the reduction processes and a dissociation of the dimers based on reductions. The theoretical understanding of the experiments was investigated by using time-dependent density functional calculations for the ionic states Of C-121(I, II, III)(n-) with n = 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4.
On the Origins of Stereo- and Regio-Selectivities in the Formation of Fullerene–Fluorene Dyads

Abstract:Recently, a novel [2+2] cycloaddition between the classical Ih-C60 and a fluorenylideneallene complex has been achieved experimentally. In the fullerene–fluorene dyad product, stereo- and regio-selectivities were found in the experiment, but the reasons are still unknown. Our theoretical studies suggest that, based on a diradical pathway, the structural selectivity of the product strongly depends on the structural/electronic features of the fluorenylideneallene and C60 complexes. When the R1 group in fluorenylideneallene denotes the H atom, the E-type product is more stable than the Z-type one, whereas other bulkier R1 groups lead to the reverse due to their steric hindrance. The π orbital conjugation between the fluorenyl group and the CβCγ bond in fluorenylideneallene is the main reason for the high selectivity of β,γ-cycloaddition. Analyses of both frontier orbitals and spin density for the intermediate structure suggest a diradical pathway of the reaction between fluorenylideneallene and C60 and uncover a decisive role of the LUMO of C60 toward regio-selectivity, which conduces to a high selectivity of the (6,6)-addition product.

Abstract:This investigation presents the synthesis of butyl-decorated calix[n]phenoxazines of varying sizes by kinetic control and the ring-expansion of calix[3]phenoxazine, which uniquely exhibits distinct binding affinities for fullerenes C60 and C70. Calix[3]phenoxazine demonstrates a higher binding affinity for cationic ammonium, which can be reversibly deprotonated and protonated, enabling the reversible release and reloading of fullerenes. This system holds potential for applications in fullerene extraction and separation.

Abstract:X-ray photoelectron and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra, as well as the ground-state electronic/geometrical structures of a newly discovered nonclassical isomer C2v-C66(NC), and two classical fullerene isomers C2-#4466C66 and Cs-#4169C66 with their hydrogenated derivatives [C2v-C66H4(NC), C2-#4466C66H4, and Cs-#4169C66H4] have been calculated at the density functional theory (DFT) level. Significant differences were observed in the electronic structures and simulated X-ray spectra after hydrogenation. Simultaneously, both X-ray photoelectron and NEXAFS spectra reflected conspicuous isomer dependence, indicating that the "fingerprints" in the X-ray spectra can offer an effective method for identifying the above-mentioned fullerene isomers. The simulated ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorption spectroscopy of C2v-C66H4(NC) has also been generated by means of the time-dependent DFT method, and the calculations are well consistent with the experimental results. Consequently, this work reveals that X-ray and UV–vis spectroscopy techniques can provide valuable information to help researchers explore the fullerene electronic structure and isomer identification on the future experimental and theoretical fullerene domains.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

The results indicate that the carbon atom number, symmetry and cap have great effects on the nonlinear optical properties of fullerene tubes. When a fullerene tube has a high carbon atom number the major dynamical response peaks in its gamma spectrum concentrate on a narrow region with lower energy and larger gamma values. In the case with similar atom numbers, the tube without a cap and an armchair tube have larger gamma values than the tube with a cap and a zigzag tube, respectively. In addition, we point out that the BxCyNz tube may be very important in optical device applications because it may have a larger gamma value than a pure carbon nanotube and its gamma value may be controlled by its composition.
