Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) play a key role in the energy efficiency of electro-catalytic systems. However, the sluggish kinetics and accumulated gas slugs under the industrial operation condition limit the application of OER. Herein, Mn, Fe co-doped nickel hydroxide with highly dense hierarchical nano-sheets array is obtained through a simple and mild two-step etching strategy, which exhibits a remarkable OER performance. Doping Mn and Fe can modulate the electronic structure and redox behavior of active site, leading to an excellent intrinsic activity toward OER. Moreover, highly dense hierarchical array structure is conducive to provide more active sites and inhibit the accumulation of gas slugs under industrial current density. Thus, the obtained catalyst provides an impressing current density of 1.8 A cm−2 at a small overpotential of 370 mV and sustains the performance more than 100 h.

Abstract:Low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the key to electrolytic water splitting of water to produce high purity hydrogen as a green energy source. Construction of nanoarrays on conductive substrates is an effective way to obtain high OER performance, due to the high surface area, enhanced mass diffusion and low interface resistance between catalysts and collectors. To achieve these merits, effective control in the composition, phase structure and size of nanoarrays is highly desirable. Herein, nanosheet arrays of single-phase Co3O4, NiO and Co3O4/NiO nanocomposites were directly grown on carbon cloth by an electrodeposition method. The composition can be finely tuned via changing the Ni2+/Co2+ ratio in the electrodeposition solution. The thickness and plane size of the nanosheets can be also well controlled. The effects of size, composition and phase on the OER activity were investigated in detail. The optimized nanosheet arrays were further coated with a NiO layer to achieve an even enhanced OER activity.

Abstract:The combination of highly active materials with judicious nanostructures is crucial to develop high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which involves sluggish multistep electron transfer processes. Herein, TiN nanowire arrays are used as conductive trunks to support active Ni-doped Co3O4 (Ni0.27Co2.73O4) nanosheets to construct a binder-free three-dimensional (3D) electrode for OER. In the core@shell configuration, the TiN nanowire arrays possess a single-crystal-like structure favoring charge migration and the ultrathin Ni0.27Co2.73O4 nanosheets have a mesoporous structure providing more active sites. The hierarchically branched morphology, high conductivity and large surface area can be achieved simultaneously by the optimization in composition and nanostructure, which contributes to excellent electrochemical performances. The TiN@Ni0.27Co2.73O4 electrode shows much better OER activity than the Ni-doped Co3O4 nanosheets deposited on planar Ti substrate and low conductive TiO2 nanowire arrays. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Engineering nanoarray structures with favorable hydrophilicity is proposed to unlock the electrocatalysis of NiFe2O4 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The resulting electrode, consisting of NiFe2O4 nanospindles directly grown on FeNi3 foam, features enlarged active surface area, high hydrophilicity and increased electronic conductivity, which achieves superior OER activity and remarkable durability.

Abstract:A stepwise electrochemical strategy is developed to prepare Co(OH)2/NiPx nanosheets with intimate and abundant heterointerfaces. Strong electronic interaction, enhanced conductivity, and hydrophilicity could be observed in Co(OH)2/NiPx nanosheets, which facilitate mass/charge transfer and promote the formation of high‐valence cobalt center. As a result, the heterostructured Co(OH)2/NiPx nanosheets demonstrate superior electrocatalytic activity and durability toward oxygen evolution reaction. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a bottleneck for the overall water splitting. Electrocatalysts with superior activity and stability are still highly desired. Herein, a stepwise electrochemical strategy is developed to prepare Co(OH)2/NiPx nanosheet arrays with intimate and abundant heterostructures. The Co(OH)2 nanosheets, which are first electrodeposited on a blank carbon cloth electrode, serve as the substrate for the nucleation and growth of NiPx. The resultant heterointerfaces are well regulated by altering the loading of NiPx. The heterostructured Co(OH)2/NiPx with optimal NiPx loading demonstrate significantly enhanced conductivity and hydrophilicity, which greatly facilitate electron and mass transfer. In addition, strong electronic interaction between Co(OH)2 and NiPx is observed, favoring the generation of high‐valence cobalt center, thus the electrocatalytic performances toward OER are remarkably improved. The heterostructured Co(OH)2/NiPx nanosheets achieve the current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 236 mV, while the corresponding values for Co(OH)2 and the benchmark Ir/C are 292 and 262 mV, respectively. This study provides a facile and effective strategy to fabricate transition metal hydroxide/phosphide composite nanomaterials with intimate heterostructures, enhanced conductivity, and improved wettability, which opens a new direction for the design of highly active electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective, highly efficient, and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is critical for improving the efficiency of hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, we reported a novel OER catalyst composed of NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on NiCo2O4 nanowires (NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH) supported on carbon cloth through the hydrothermal method and subsequent electrodeposition. The three-dimension (3D) hierarchical architecture facilitates the diffusion of electrolyte ions and O2 release. Experimental results demonstrate that the electrons transfer from the highly conductive NiCo2O4 nanowires to the NiFe-LDH sheets, which could expedite the charge transfer significantly. Importantly, the tunable adsorption/desorption nature of the oxygenated intermediates was achieved through the local delocalization of spin state at the heterointerface through the bridging O2-. Benefiting from the heterostructure and synergistic effects between different components, the optimized NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH-2 exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 270 mV at 50 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 74 mV dec−1 and a good durability for 25 h in 1 M KOH. This work provides a novel approach to fabricate advanced OER catalysts and is expected to be extended to other materials for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Interface engineering has been recognized as one of the most promising strategies for regulating the physical and chemical properties of materials. However, constructing well-defined nanointerfaces with efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) still remains a challenge. Herein, cross columnar NiTe nanoarrays supported on nickel foam are prepared. Subsequently, NiTe/NiS nanointerfaces are constructed by an ion-exchange process. Importantly, the electrocatalytic performance for the OER can be facilitated by coupling NiTe and NiS. As a result, NiTe/NiS shows excellent OER activity with an ultralow overpotential of only 257 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm-2 , and a Tafel slope of 49 mV dec-1 in 1.0 m KOH. The calculated and experimental results reveal that the strong electron interaction on nanointerfaces induces electronic structure modulation, which optimizes the binding energy of *OOH intermediates, thus improving the OER performance.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient, durable, and non-noble electrocatalysts for the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the pivotal for meeting the practical demand in water splitting. However, the current transition-metal electrocatalysts still suffer from low activity and durability on account of poor interfacial reaction kinetics. In this work, a facile solid-state synthesis strategy is developed to construct transition-metal sulfides heterostructures (denoted as MS2/NiS2, M = Mo or W) for boosting OER electrocatalysis. As a result, MoS2/NiS2 and WS2/NiS2 show lower overpotentials of 300 mV and 320 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA·cm−2, and smaller Tafel slopes of 60 mV·dec−1 and 83 mV·dec−1 in 1 mol·L−1 KOH, respectively, in comparison with the single MoS2, WS2, NiS2, as well as even the benchmark RuO2. The experiments reveal that the designed heterostructures have strong electronic interactions and spontaneously develop a built-in electric field at the heterointerface with uneven charge distribution based on the difference of band structures, which promote interfacial charge transfer, improve absorptivity of OH−, and modulate the energy level more comparable to the OER. Thus, the designed transition-metal sulfides heterostructures exhibit a remarkably high electrocatalytic activity for OER. This study provides a simple strategy to manipulate the heterostructure interface via an energy level engineering method for OER and can be extended to fabricate other heterostructures for various energy-related applications.

In Situ-Generated Hollow CoFe-LDH/Co-MOF Heterostructure Nanorod Arrays for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Assembling a heterostructure is an effective strategy for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of hybrid materials. Herein, CoFe-layered double hydroxide and Co-metal-organic framework (CoFe-LDH/Co-MOF) hollow heterostructure nanorod arrays are synthesized. First, [Co(DIPL)(H3BTC)(H2O)2]n [named as Co-MOF, DIPL = 2,6-di(pyrid-4-yl)-4-phenylpyridine, H3BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid] crystalline materials with a uniform hollow structure were prepared on the nickel foam. The CoFe-LDH/Co-MOF composite perfectly inherits the original hollow nanorod array morphology after the subsequent electrodeposition process. Optimized CoFe-LDH/Co-MOF hollow heterostructure nanorod arrays display excellent performance in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with ultralow overpotentials of 215 mV to deliver current densities of 10 mA cm-2 and maintain the electrocatalytic activity for a duration as long as 220 h, ranking it one of the non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for OER. Density functional theory calculations validate the reduction in free energy for the rate-determining step by the synergistic effect of Co-MOF and CoFe-LDH, with the increased charge density and noticeable electron transfer at the Co-O site, which highlights the capability of Co-MOF to finely adjust the electronic structure and facilitate the creation of active sites. This work establishes an experimental and theoretical basis for promoting efficient water splitting through the design of heterostructures in catalysts.
One-spot autogenous formation of crystalline-amorphous Ni3S2/NiFeO Hy heterostructure nanosheets array for synergistically boosted oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:We proposed a convenient heterostructure engineering strategy to integrate ultra-small Nickel sulfide (Ni3S2) laminar nanocrystallines and amorphous NiFe-(oxy) hydroxides (NiFeO x Hy) nanosheets as three-dimensional (3D) freestanding catalyst to regulate electric conductivity and boost mass transport by one-step hydrothermal method. These super-hydrophilic Ni3S2/NiFeO x Hy heterostructure nanosheets with large specific surfaces can create strongly synergistic couplings of accessible active sites at the interfaces, expedite the electrolyte penetration and make gas bubbles to rapidly release the surface, significantly facilitating intrinsic the kinetics for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Intriguingly, the self-supported Ni3S2/NiFeO x Hy heterostructure nanosheets array displays remarkable OER activity with ultralow overpotentials of only 209 and 243 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm−2, small Tafel slope of 79.8 mV dec−1, as well as good stability up to 55 h. Also, the Ni3S2/NiFeO x Hy heterostructure demonstrates an acceptable activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) delivered 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 172 mV. In addition, the Ni3S2/NiFeO x Hy can also be served as bifunctional electrocatalyst assembled in a two-electrode configuration with a perfect voltage of 1.32 V to reach 10 mA cm−2 under industrial condition at 85 °C in 6 M KOH for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Interface engineering has been recognized as a highly effective strategy for improving the intrinsic activity of catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), wherein the rational construction of interfacial nanostructures has been the key to promote the sluggish OER kinetics. Herein, self-supported NiCo2S4/FeOOH nanowire arrays with rich heterointerfaces being embedded in were constructed via a two-step route, namely, hydrothermal synthesis of hydroxide precursors and then selective sulfur anion exchange, which was purposely realized by utilizing the different solubility product constants (Ksp) of Ni(II), Co(II), and Fe(III)-hydroxides and controlling the sulfidation conditions. The as-synthesized NiCo2S4/FeOOH nanowire arrays as a pre-catalyst present a large length-diameter ratio and porous feature, which is beneficial to expose high density of active sites and accelerate the mass transport. In addition, the synergy arising from interfacial electron redistribution and multiple active sites substantially helps optimize the surface binding energy of the different intermediates as demonstrated by our experimental investigations and theoretical calculations, thus enabling the remarkable overall activity for OER with an ultra-low overpotential of ∼200 mV to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm−2. This interface engineering strategy can be expanded to advance other interfacial structures, which is believed to afford inspiration in the field of interface engineering for high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:Low-cost and highly effective transition metal oxides are being widely researched as one of the most promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, traditional transition metal oxides suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics due to their intrinsically poor electronic conductivity. Herein, we demonstrate a facile polydopamine-assisted carburization strategy for the confined synthesis of novel NiOx/Ni ultrathin heterostructured nanosheets. Benefiting from the large exposed surface area and fast charge transfer, the obtained ultrathin NiOx/Ni heterostructured nanosheets exhibit an overpotential of 358 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 51 mV dec(-1), outperforming other reported representative nickel oxide based materials and commercial Ir/C catalysts. In addition, a sustainable and efficient overall water-splitting electrolyzer integrated ultrathin NiOx/Ni nanosheets with commercial Pt/C can be effectively and stably driven by solar cells.

Abstract:Hierarchical nanostructure with hollow feature can greatly promote electrocatalytic activity by facilitating the diffusion of active species and accelerating the contact between catalyst and electrolyte. In this paper, we report the preparation of hierarchical hollow NiFe hydroxide nanospheres assembled from ultrathin nanosheets as the OER electrocatalyst via a simple and gentle self-templating strategy, which includes two steps: the synthesis of Ni(OH)2 nanospheres precursor and its further transformation to the final hollow-spheres after the introduction of Fe3+ via a mild hydrothermal method. The hollow NiFe hydroxide nanospheres were proven to be composed of ultrathin nanosheets which formed porous walls. This unique structure achieved numerous mass transfer channels for electrolytes, ideal pathways for ions and electrons, and a high specific surface area, leading to the improved performance for the product during the electrocatalytic reaction. In addition, the charge transfer rate and structural stability of the architecture have been greatly improved after the addition of Fe3+, which guaranteed high electrochemical performance toward OER. The tafel plot for NiFe-190 without any conductive agents is 60 mV dec−1 and the overpotential needed to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 is a 270 mV.

Abstract:Transition metal selenides (TMSes) have attracted increasing attention for electrocatalysts due to fascinating properties, such as low cost, intrinsic metallic properties, and high catalytic activities. In addition, bimetallic selenides exhibit more excellent performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process than monometallic selenides via synergistic effect. Herein, we synthesized Fe doped NiSe 2 on carbon cloth (CC) employed as electrodes for boosting OER by a facile two-step hydrothermal method. These electrodes display excellent electrocatalytic activity for OER in alkaline electrolytes, in which Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 Se 2 /CC is evidenced by the overpotential of 257 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and Tafel slope of 43 mV dec −1 . The synthesized three-dimensional structure with the aid of carbon cloth helps for the mass and charge transfer. Furthermore, Fe doping not only induces stronger electron interaction but tunes electronic structure, thus improving the OER performance. After a long-term OER process, Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 Se 2 transforms into NiFe-based (oxy)hydroxides, which may serve as "real" active phase. Doping engineering strategy makes TMSes manifest a superb performance for OER and expands ways for designing effective OER electrodes.

Herein, a new non-precious metal electrocatalyst by synergistically coupling spindle-like Fe3N hollow nanorods with Ni2Co layered double hydroxides (Fe3N@Ni2Co-LDHs) was fabricated via annealing spindle-like Fe2O3 hollow nanorods in NH3 atmosphere, followed by refluxing in oil bath in the existence of Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O, Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O, urea and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Impressively, the Fe3N@Ni2Co-LDHs nanohybrids with heterointerfaces shows remarkable OER performance with extremely low overpotential (only 240 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm(-2)) and small Tafel slope (38.9 mV dec(-1)) for OER in alkaline medium. The enhanced OER performance could be attributed to the strong interfacial interaction between Fe3N and Ni2Co-LDHs, and improved electrical conductivity of the nanohybrids. This work might provide a feasible route for the development of efficient electrocatalysts with hetero-interfaces in renewable energy system. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Developing hollow self-supported nanotube arrays with hierarchical microporous and abundant multiactive sites shows great promise for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis. Herein, a facile and low-cost strategy of NiCo2S4 hollow nanotubes arrays decorated with CeOx nanoparticles (NPs) assembled on a flexible support carbon cloth (CC) for enhanced OER performance is reported. The obtained hierarchical nanoarrays CeOx/NiCo2S4/CC exhibited excellent activity toward OER with an overpotential (270 mV) at 10 mA cm-2, relatively weak Tafel slope, and distinguished durability. CeOx/NiCo2S4/CC nanoarrays not only provide fast electronic transmission and well-defined connection to the substrate but also defective sites and electron transfer by the introduction of CeOx NPs. This new strategy was offered to construct low-cost and effectively hierarchical structural electrocatalysts containing rare-earth species.

Abstract:Designing and synthesizing highly efficient, stable and inexpensive electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a significant research topic for the development of clean energy. Herein, a catalyst of Ni3S2-Co9S8 heterostructure nanowires supported on nickel foam is fabricated by a two-step hydrothermal method. The catalyst shows excellent OER activity with an overpotential of only 294 mV at 20 mA cm−2, which may be attributed to the defective heterointerfaces between the metallic Co9S8 and Ni3S2 nanocrystalline grains. This efficient strategy for preparing Ni3S2-Co9S8 heterostructure catalyst can shed some light on the design of noble metal-free electrocatalysts. The performances for electrocatalytic oxidation of H2O2 on the electrodes are studied, and the results indicate that the step of –OOH oxidation in OER is a fast kinetics process and not the rate-determining step.
