Abstract:Unraveling the catalyst surface structure and behavior during reactions is essential for both mechanistic understanding and performance optimization. Here we report a phenomenon of facet-dependent surface restructuring intrinsic to β-Ni(OH)(2) catalysts during oxygen evolution reaction (OER), discovered by the correlative ex situ and operando characterization. The ex situ study after OER reveals β-Ni(OH)(2) restructuring at the edge facets to form nanoporous Ni(1-x)O, which is Ni deficient...

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problems of activity and stability of nickel - based catalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Specifically, the researchers focused on the changes in the surface structure of the β - Ni(OH)₂ catalyst during the OER process and their impact on the catalytic performance. By combining multiple in - situ and ex - situ characterization techniques, the researchers revealed a facet - dependent surface reconstruction phenomenon of β - Ni(OH)₂ during the OER process, which can significantly improve the OER activity of the catalyst. ### Main problems 1. **Changes in catalyst surface structure**: The researchers attempted to understand the changes in the surface structure of β - Ni(OH)₂ during the OER process, especially the structural changes on different crystal facets. 2. **Identification of active sites**: Determine the real active species and active sites during the OER process to optimize the catalytic mechanism. 3. **Improvement of catalytic performance**: Through the surface reconstruction process, improve the OER activity of β - Ni(OH)₂ so that it outperforms existing benchmark catalysts such as IrO₂ in performance. ### Solutions 1. **Experimental methods**: - **Ex - situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM)**: Used to observe the surface structure of the catalyst after the reaction. - **In - situ liquid - phase transmission electron microscopy (Liquid TEM)**: Used to observe the structural changes during the OER process in real - time. - **Raman spectroscopy**: Used to monitor the changes in chemical bonds during the OER process. - **X - ray absorption near - edge structure (XANES) and extended X - ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS)**: Used to analyze the electronic structure and local coordination environment of the catalyst. 2. **Theoretical calculations**: - **Density functional theory (DFT)**: Used to calculate the energy changes in the OER path and verify the experimental results. ### Main findings 1. **Surface reconstruction phenomenon**: During the OER process, β - Ni(OH)₂ will form a nanoporous Ni₁₋ₓO layer on the edge crystal facet ({101̅0}), which is accompanied by the generation of Ni³⁺ species and the formation of Ni vacancies. 2. **Active species**: β - NiOOH was identified as the main active species in the OER process. 3. **Active sites**: The edge crystal facet ({101̅0}) was identified as the main active site for OER. 4. **Improvement of catalytic performance**: The Ni₁₋ₓO layer formed by surface reconstruction significantly increases the exposed active sites, accelerates the oxidation kinetics of Ni, and optimizes the binding energy of *OH intermediates, thereby significantly improving the OER activity. ### Conclusion By revealing the facet - dependent surface reconstruction phenomenon of β - Ni(OH)₂ during the OER process, the researchers not only gained an in - depth understanding of the activity mechanism of the catalyst but also provided an effective strategy to optimize the OER performance of nickel - based catalysts. This finding provides new ideas for the development of high - performance OER catalysts.
