Abstract:It is commonly accepted that machine translation is a more complex task than part of speech tagging. But how much more complex? In this paper we make an attempt to develop a general framework and methodology for computing the informational and/or processing complexity of NLP applications and tasks. We define a universal framework akin to a Turning Machine that attempts to fit (most) NLP tasks into one paradigm. We calculate the complexities of various NLP tasks using measures of Shannon Entropy, and compare `simple' ones such as part of speech tagging to `complex' ones such as machine translation. This paper provides a first, though far from perfect, attempt to quantify NLP tasks under a uniform paradigm. We point out current deficiencies and suggest some avenues for fruitful research.

Abstract:In the era of the Internet of information, we have gone through layering, cross-layer, and cross-system design paradigms. Recently, the ``curse of modeling" and ``curse of dimensionality" of the cross-system design paradigm have resulted in the popularity of using artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize the Internet of information. However, many significant research challenges remain to be addressed for the AI approach, including the lack of high-quality training data due to privacy and resources constraints in this data-driven approach. To address these challenges, we need to take a look at humans' cooperation in a larger time scale. To facilitate cooperation in modern history, we have built three major technologies: ``grid of transportation", ``grid of energy", and ``the Internet of information". In this paper, we argue that the next cooperation paradigm could be the ``Internet of intelligence (Intelligence-Net)", where intelligence can be easily obtained like energy and information, enabled by the recent advances in blockchain technology. We present some recent advances in these areas, and discuss some open issues and challenges that need to be addressed in the future.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) systems, such as machine learning algorithms, have allowed scientists, marketers and governments to shed light on correlations that remained invisible until now. Beforehand, the dots that we had to connect in order to imagine a new knowledge were either too numerous, too sparse or not even detected. Sometimes, the information was not stored in the same data lake or format and was not able to communicate. But in creating new bridges with AI, many problems appeared such as bias reproduction, unfair inferences or mass surveillance. Our aim is to show that, on one hand, the AI's deep ethical problem lays essentially in these new connections made possible by systems interoperability. In connecting the spheres of our life, these systems undermine the notion of justice particular to each of them, because the new interactions create dominances of social goods from a sphere to another. These systems make therefore spheres permeable to one another and, in doing so, they open to progress as well as to tyranny. On another hand, however, we would like to emphasize that the act to connect what used to seem a priori disjoint is a necessary move of knowledge and scientific progress.

Abstract:Abstract Artificial intelligence has been widely utilized in people’s lives, especially in communication. The article provides a review of the recent research status of the application of artificial intelligence in communication, the usefulness of big data, machine learning, and cloud computation in this field. Several examples of how artificial intelligence is used to communicate are illustrated to discuss better and form a framework of modern artificial intelligence applications. The aspects of concern in ethics of using artificial intelligence are also mentioned, as ethics are the principles judging whether the technologies are suitable for humans to use or not. In order to predict the future development of communication, an introduction of previous progress in the field of communication is provided and sorted into categories of wireless communication, ethical concerns, and network monitor and control. This study confirms that the future development of artificial intelligence is mainly in two aspects: SDN (Software-defined network) and NFV (Network function visualization). AI will thus be used in enhancing communication efficiency.

Abstract:Can humans and artificial intelligences share concepts and communicate? 'Making AI Intelligible' shows that philosophical work on the metaphysics of meaning can help answer these questions. Herman Cappelen and Josh Dever use the externalist tradition in philosophy to create models of how AIs and humans can understand each other. In doing so, they illustrate ways in which that philosophical tradition can be improved. The questions addressed in the book are not only theoretically interesting, but the answers have pressing practical implications. Many important decisions about human life are now influenced by AI. In giving that power to AI, we presuppose that AIs can track features of the world that we care about (for example, creditworthiness, recidivism, cancer, and combatants). If AIs can share our concepts, that will go some way towards justifying this reliance on AI. This ground-breaking study offers insight into how to take some first steps towards achieving Interpretable AI.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity of network topologies and architectures, adding intelligence to the network control plane through Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI&ML) is becoming a trend in network development. For large-scale geo-distributed systems, determining how to appropriately introduce intelligence in networking is the key to high-efficiency operation. In this treatise, we explore two deployment paradigms (centralized vs. distributed) for AI-based networking. To achieve the best results, we propose a hybrid ML paradigm that combines a distributed intelligence, based on units called "AI routers," with a centralized intelligence, called the "network mind", to support different network services. In the proposed paradigm, we deploy centralized AI control for connection-oriented tunneling-based routing protocols (such as multiprotocol label switching and segment routing) to guarantee a high QoS, whereas for hop-by-hop IP routing, we shift the intelligent control responsibility to each AI router to ease the overhead imposed by centralized control and use the network mind to improve the global convergence.

Abstract:In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been increasingly adopted to tackle networking problems. Although AI algorithms can deliver high-quality solutions, most of them are inherently intricate and erratic for human cognition. This lack of interpretability tremendously hinders the commercial success of AI-based solutions in practice. To cope with this challenge, networking researchers are starting to explore explainable AI (XAI) techniques to make AI models interpretable, manageable, and trustworthy. In this article, we overview the application of AI in networking and discuss the necessity for interpretability. Next, we review the current research on interpreting AI-based networking solutions and systems. At last, we envision future challenges and directions. The ultimate goal of this article is to present a general guideline for AI and networking practitioners and motivate the continuous advancement of AI-based solutions in modern communication networks.

Abstract intelligence triggers the recent breakthroughs in cognitive systems such as cognitive computers, cognitive robots, cognitive neural networks, and cognitive learning. This paper reports a set of position statements presented in the plenary panel Part II of IEEE ICCI*CC'16 on Cognitive Informatics and Cognitive Computing at Stanford University. The summary is contributed by invited panelists who are part of the world's renowned scholars in the transdisciplinary field of CI and CC.

Abstract:This paper analyses Conversational AI multi-agent interoperability frameworks and describes the novel architecture proposed by the Open Voice Interoperability initiative (Linux Foundation AI and DATA), also known briefly as OVON (Open Voice Network). The new approach is illustrated, along with the main components, delineating the key benefits and use cases for deploying standard multi-modal AI agency (or agentic AI) communications. Beginning with Universal APIs based on Natural Language, the framework establishes and enables interoperable interactions among diverse Conversational AI agents, including chatbots, voicebots, videobots, and human agents. Furthermore, a new Discovery specification framework is introduced, designed to efficiently look up agents providing specific services and to obtain accurate information about these services through a standard Manifest publication, accessible via an extended set of Natural Language-based APIs. The main purpose of this contribution is to significantly enhance the capabilities and scalability of AI interactions across various platforms. The novel architecture for interoperable Conversational AI assistants is designed to generalize, being replicable and accessible via open repositories.

Abstract:The current Internet is an end-to-end communication architecture based on packet switching between terminals. However, with the development of computer networks and increasing proliferation of communication services, the ability of this architecture-based Internet to transmit and process data has encountered challenges, and it has been unable to adapt to the rapid development of today's application requirements. Thus, information-centric networking (ICN) is emerging as a feasible solution and has become a new hot topic for future research in network architecture. The ICN strips content from terminal locations and provides services such as storage and multi-party communication through the publish/ subscribe paradigm. Although the ICN brings new opportunities for network development, there are plenty of problems existing in the ICN that have not been settled. For example, the conflict between polymerizability and mobility in the naming scheme, scalability problems of the name routing, as well as the inefficiency of transmission control algorithms under the circumstance of rich interest are all worth discussing. However, utilizing the computational and analytical features of artificial intelligence (AI) can help the ICN break through the bottleneck of existing technology development. With regard to the issues above, this article introduces and investigates some related technologies of AI in the ICN, that is, naming mechanism, transmission control, and content distribution, and introduces and surveys problems in ICN research. Furthermore, the next development direction of ICN and issues that need to be studied are discussed in this work.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in natural language processing are rapidly advancing and transforming communication practices across diverse contexts. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of AI's emerging roles in mediating and participating in direct communication to highlight key opportunities and research priorities around responsible innovation. The study surveys the extensive literature on major applications of AI, including virtual assistants, chatbots, smart replies, sentiment analysis tools, and automatic translation technologies. It also closely examines their current and potential usage and benefits across interpersonal, organizational, and societal communication. The analysis reveals these AI technologies promise enhanced efficiency, personali-zation, accessibility, and new modalities of expression in communication. The study found that if judiciously and ethically applied, they could incrementally improve communication speed, quality, relationships, and even therapists' capabilities over time. However, more rigorous research is still recommended to investigate longitudinal impacts on human well-being, increase accessibility for vulnerable demographic groups, advance multimodality AI systems, and develop tailored guidelines and user-centered studies to ensure ethical, socially responsible progress. Overall, this review synthesizes the current state of the science and pressing research needs in this rapidly emerging field.
Two Decades of AI4NETS-AI/ML for Data Networks: Challenges & Research Directions

Abstract:The popularity of Artificial Intelligence (AI) -- and of Machine Learning (ML) as an approach to AI, has dramatically increased in the last few years, due to its outstanding performance in various domains, notably in image, audio, and natural language processing. In these domains, AI success-stories are boosting the applied field. When it comes to AI/ML for data communication Networks (AI4NETS), and despite the many attempts to turn networks into learning agents, the successful application of AI/ML in networking is limited. There is a strong resistance against AI/ML-based solutions, and a striking gap between the extensive academic research and the actual deployments of such AI/ML-based systems in operational environments. The truth is, there are still many unsolved complex challenges associated to the analysis of networking data through AI/ML, which hinders its acceptability and adoption in the practice. In this positioning paper I elaborate on the most important show-stoppers in AI4NETS, and present a research agenda to tackle some of these challenges, enabling a natural adoption of AI/ML for networking. In particular, I focus the future research in AI4NETS around three major pillars: (i) to make AI/ML immediately applicable in networking problems through the concepts of effective learning, turning it into a useful and reliable way to deal with complex data-driven networking problems; (ii) to boost the adoption of AI/ML at the large scale by learning from the Internet-paradigm itself, conceiving novel distributed and hierarchical learning approaches mimicking the distributed topological principles and operation of the Internet itself; and (iii) to exploit the softwarization and distribution of networks to conceive AI/ML-defined Networks (AIDN), relying on the distributed generation and re-usage of knowledge through novel Knowledge Delivery Networks (KDNs).

“My AI must have been broken”: How AI Stands to Reshape Human Communication

Abstract:From autocomplete and smart replies to video filters and deepfakes, we increasingly live in a world where communication between humans is augmented by artificial intelligence. AI often operates on behalf of a human communicator by recommending, suggesting, modifying, or generating messages to accomplish communication goals. We call this phenomenon AI-Mediated Communication (or AI-MC) [1, 4]. While AI-MC has the potential of making human communication more efficient, it impacts other aspects of our communication in ways that are not yet well understood. Over the last three years, my collaborators and I have been documenting the impact of AI-MC on communication outcomes, language use, interpersonal trust, and more. The talk will outline early experimental findings from this work, mostly led by Cornell and Stanford graduate students Maurice Jakesch, Hannah Mieczkowski, and Jess Hohenstein. For example, the research shows that AI-MC involvement can result in language shifting towards positivity [2, 7]; impact the evaluation of others [2, 4]; change the extent to which we take ownership over our messages [6]; and shift assignment of blame for communication outcomes [3]. Given the impact of AI-MC on interpersonal evaluations, the talk will also cover our recent research examining the (mostly false) heuristics humans use when evaluating whether text was written by AI [5]. Overall, AI-MC raises significant practical and ethical concerns as it stands to reshape human communication, calling for new approaches to the development and regulation of these technologies.

Abstract:To give a high-level summary to current approaches for implementing artificial intelligence (AI), we explain the key commonalities and major differences between Turing's approach and Wiener's approach in this perspective. Especially, the problems, successful achievements, limitations, and future research directions of existing approaches that follow Weiner's ideas are addressed, respectively, aiming to provide readers with a good start point and a roadmap. Some other related topics, for example, the role of human experts in developing AI, are also discussed to seek potential solutions for some existing difficulties.

Abstract:Can AI and humans genuinely communicate? In this article, after giving some background and motivating my proposal (sections 1 to 3), I explore a way to answer this question that I call the "mental-behavioral methodology" (sections 4 and 5). This methodology follows the following three steps: First, spell out what mental capacities are sufficient for human communication (as opposed to communication more generally). Second, spell out the experimental paradigms required to test whether a behavior exhibits these capacities. Third, apply or adapt these paradigms to test whether an AI displays the relevant behaviors. If the first two steps are successfully completed, and if the AI passes the tests with human-like results, this constitutes evidence that this AI and humans can genuinely communicate. This mental-behavioral methodology has the advantage that we don't need to understand the workings of black-box algorithms, such as standard deep neural networks. This is comparable to the fact that we don't need to understand how human brains work to know that humans can genuinely communicate. This methodology also has its disadvantages and I will discuss some of them (section 6).

Abstract:As Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology becomes more and more prevalent, it becomes increasingly important to explore how we as humans interact with AI. The Human-AI Interaction (HAI) sub-field has emerged from the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) field and aims to examine this very notion. Many interaction patterns have been implemented without fully understanding the changes in required cognition as well as the cognitive science implications of using these alternative interfaces that aim to be more human-like in nature. Prior research suggests that theory of mind representations are crucial to successful and effortless communication, however very little is understood when it comes to how theory of mind representations are established when interacting with AI.

Abstract:The fifth-generation cellular networks (5G) has boosted the unprecedented convergence between the information world and physical world. On the other hand, empowered with the enormous amount of data and information, artificial intelligence (AI) has been universally applied and pervasive AI is believed to be an integral part of the six-generation cellular networks (6G). Consequently, benefiting from the advancement in communication technology and AI, we boldly argue that the conditions for collective intelligence (CI) will be mature in the 6G era and CI will emerge among the widely connected beings and things. Afterwards, we highlight the potential huge impact of CI on both communications and intelligence. In particular, we introduce a regular language (i.e., the information economy metalanguage) supporting the future collective communications to augment human intelligence and explain its potential applications in naming Internet information and pushing information centric networks forward. Meanwhile, we propose a stigmergy-based federated collective intelligence and demonstrate its achievement in a simulated scenario where the agents collectively work together to form a pattern through simple indirect communications. In a word, CI could advance both communications and intelligence.

Abstract:Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) have become hot topics in many information processing areas, from chatbots to scientific data analysis. At the same time, there is uncertainty about the possibility of extending predominant ML technologies to become general solutions with continuous learning capabilities. Here, a simple, yet comprehensive, theoretical framework for intelligent systems is presented. A combination of Mirror Compositional Representations (MCR) and a Solution-Critic Loop (SCL) is proposed as a generic approach for different types of problems. A prototype implementation is presented for document comparison using English Wikipedia corpus.
