Abstract:Mathematics is the science of pattern study, and the pattern is formed with logical construction. The concept of pattern abandons the extremely philosophical comprehension of realism and anti-realism. It fully affirms the abstraction and objectivity of mathematics. Based on the concept of patterned mathematical ontology, mathematics includes instrumental character and cultural character. Mathematics penetrates in every branch of science, and provides the necessary instrument for them. It is the incarnation of the rational spirit, and profoundly affects the cultivation of people’s concepts, spirit and way of thinking.

Abstract:In the words of the twentieth-century British mathematician G. H. Hardy, "the human function is to 'discover or observe' mathematics" (1). For centuries, starting from the ancient Greeks, mankind has hunted for beauty and order in arts and in nature. This quest for mathematical beauty has led to the discovery of recurrent mathematical structures, such as the golden ratio, Fibonacci, and Lucas numbers, whose ubiquitous presences have been tantalizing the minds of artists and scientists alike. The captivation for this quest comes with high stakes. In fact, art is the definitive expression of human creativity, and its mathematical understanding would deliver us the keys for decoding human culture and its evolution (2). However, it was not until fairly recently that the scope and the scale of the human quest for mathematical beauty was radically expanded by the simultaneous confluence of three separate innovations. The mass digitization of large art archives, the surge in computational power, and the development of robust statistical methods to capture hidden patterns in vast amounts of data have made it possible to reveal the---otherwise unnoticeable to the human eye---mathematics concealed in large artistic corpora. Starting from its inception, marked by the foundational work by Birkhoff (3), progress in the broad field of computational aesthetics has reached a scale that would have been unimaginable just a decade ago. The recent expansion is not limited to the visual arts (2) but includes music (4), stories (5), language phonology (6), humor in jokes (7), and even equations (8); for a comprehensive review, see ref. 9.

Abstract:We consider the mathematical theory of geographical maps, with an emphasis on the eighteenth century works of Euler, Lagrange and Delisle. This period is characterized by the frequent use of maps that are no more obtained by the stereographic projection or its variations, but by much more general maps from the sphere to the plane. More especially, the characteristics of the desired geographical maps were formulated in terms of an appropriate choice of the images of the parallels and meridians, and the mathematical properties required by the map concern the distortion of the maps restricted to these lines. The paper also contains some notes on the general use of mathematical methods in cartography in Greek Antiquity and in the modern period, and on the mutual influence of the two fields, mathematics and geography. Abstract:This paper establishes grounds for deeper exploration into the question of dual nature of mathematics as an abstract discipline and as a concrete science. It is argued, as one of the consequences of the discussion, that the division into "pure" and "applied" mathematics is artificial. The criterion of creativity and applicability outside of the original context is used as a litmus test. It is emphasized that great societies and cultural environments produce great mathematics and individual mathematicians.

Abstract:This chapter addresses the relationships between modernist literature and modernist mathematics, as each grounded in the double movement from ontology to technology, specifically the technology of composition, and toward the self-determination of itself as a field. Emerging from this double movement, modernist thinking is defined by the irreducible unthinkable, the irreducible multiple, and irreducible randomness or chance. Three cases, I argue, powerfully exemplify this situation: Stéphane Mallarmé (1842–1898) at the onset of literary modernism, Kurt Gödel (1906–1978) at the height of mathematical modernism in the 1930s, and Werner Heisenberg (1901–1976), who pioneered the use of mathematical composition in physics, in the 1920s. I discuss Gödel and Mallarmé in the companion article in this volume, and here focus on Mallarmé and Heisenberg, considered via Jacques Derrida’s ideas.

Abstract:Mathematics is probably the only subject that can be classified both as art as well as science - former, because it is not constrained by the real world and latter because it is a logical system with precisely defined rules as well as primitives that lead to unambiguous nontrivial theorems. Indian (and of Indian origin) mathematicians have continued to do seminal work till present times, culminating in Manjul Bhargava receiving the Fields Medal last year. In such fabulous times, a non-mathematician ponders about the nature of mathematics, and revisits the question: why are fundamental laws of Nature inherently mathematical?

Abstract:Monsters lurk within mathematical as well as literary haunts. I propose to trace some pathways between these two monstrous habitats. I start from Jeffrey Jerome Cohen's influential account of monster culture and explore how well mathematical monsters fit each of his seven theses. The mathematical monsters I discuss are drawn primarily from three distinct but overlapping domains. Firstly, late nineteenth-century mathematicians made numerous unsettling discoveries that threatened their understanding of their own discipline and challenged their intuitions. The great French mathematician Henri Poincaré characterised these anomalies as `monsters', a name that stuck. Secondly, the twentieth-century philosopher Imre Lakatos composed a seminal work on the nature of mathematical proof, in which monsters play a conspicuous role. Lakatos coined such terms as `monster-barring' and `monster-adjusting' to describe strategies for dealing with entities whose properties seem to falsify a conjecture. Thirdly, and most recently, mathematicians dubbed the largest of the sporadic groups `the Monster', because of its vast size and uncanny properties, and because its existence was suspected long before it could be confirmed.

Abstract:Mathematical research is often motivated by the desire to reach a beautiful result or to prove it in an elegant way. Mathematician's work is thus strongly influenced by his aesthetic judgments. However, the criteria these judgments are based on remain unclear. In this article, we focus on the concept of mathematical beauty, as one of the central aesthetic concepts in mathematics. We argue that beauty in mathematics reveals connections between apparently non-related problems or areas and allows a better and wider insight into mathematical reality as a whole. We also explain the close relationship between beauty and other important notions such as depth, elegance, simplicity, fruitfulness, and others.

They talk about the notches on the Ishango bone and the various uses of psi in maths and physics; they arrive at dessins d’enfants, moonshine concepts, Rademacher sums and their significance in the quantum world. You should not miss their eccentric proposal of relating Bell’s theorem to the Baby Monster group. Their hyperbolic polygons show a considerable singularity/cusp structure that our modern age of computers is able to capture. Henri Poincaré would have been happy to see it.

Abstract:We extend Langdon Winner's idea that artifacts have politics into the realm of mathematics. To do so, we first provide a list of examples showing the existence of mathematical artifacts that have politics. In the second step, we provide an argument that shows that all mathematical artifacts have politics. We conclude by showing the implications for embedding ethics into mathematical curricula. We show how acknowledging that mathematical artifacts have politics can help mathematicians design better exercises for their mathematics students.

From Neoclassicism to "Pompier" Painters: The 19th-Century French Art under the Academic System

Abstract:Although the art of the 19th century in France was diverse especially since the second half, there was a constant trend that did not undergone fundamental changes and has become a major feature of French art: the professional creation under the academic system. From neoclassicism to the tide of what is known as the "pompier" (which means "fireman" in French) painting, France has always adhered to the principles of teaching, advanced study, creation and collection set by the academies in classical times. It has produced a large number of French academic artists, in particular in the field of historical painting and portrait with very high achievements. The field of sculpture, represented by Rude and Carpeaux, has also impressive results. How can this trend keep its own constancy under the impact of many factors? This article explores the academic trend from the institutional perspective of the French Academy of Arts, the National School of Arts of Paris (ENSBA), the Roman Prize, the French Institute of Rome, the Salon Exhibitions, the Studios, and the Louvre, etc. The current author also analyzes the reason why this academic painting trend can get a new understanding and evaluation in the academic and museum circles since the second half of the 20th century.

Abstract:From the geocentric, closed world model of Antiquity to the wraparound universe models of relativistic cosmology, the parallel history of space representations in science and art illustrates the fundamental role of geometric imagination in innovative findings. Through the analysis of works of various artists and scientists like Plato, Durer, Kepler, Escher, Grisey or the present author, it is shown how the process of creation in science and in the arts rests on aesthetical principles such as symmetry, regular polyhedra, laws of harmonic proportion, tessellations, group theory, etc., as well as beauty, conciseness and emotional approach of the world.

Abstract:People typically consider only European mathematics as orthodox, often intentionally or unintentionally overlooking the existence of mathematics from non-European societies. Inspired by Maria Ascher's two well-known papers on sand drawings in Oceania and Africa, this paper focuses on the strong link between modern mathematics and the mathematics behind the sand drawings. Beginning with a comparison of the geography, history, and the cultural context of sand drawings in Oceania and Africa, we will examine shared geometric features of European graph theory and Indigenous sand drawings, including continuity, cyclicity, and symmetry. The paper will also delve into the origin of graph theory, exploring whether the famous European mathematician Leonhard Euler, who published his solution to the Konigsberg bridge problem in 1736, was the true inventor of graph theory. The potential for incorporating sand drawings into the school curriculum is highlighted at the end. Overall, this paper aims to make readers realise the importance of ethnomathematics studies and appreciate the intelligence of Indigenous people.

Abstract:The theme of the influence of Bourbaki's ideas and methodologies on disciplines that transcend the mathematical field has been frequently addressed and, in particular, the reflection on the relationship between Bourbaki and Oulipo has animated a passionate debate within literary criticism. The purpose of this contribution is to investigate the relations between Le Lionnais, Queneau and Roubaud - and more generally Oulipo - and Bourbaki. Through a comparative examination between the two groups, the existence of an undeniable charisma of the "polycephalic mathematician" on the artistic-literary movement was highlighted.

Abstract:We compare several approaches to the history of mathematics recently proposed by Blasjo, Fraser--Schroter, Fried, and others. We argue that tools from both mathematics and history are essential for a meaningful history of the discipline. In an extension of the Unguru-Weil controversy over the concept of geometric algebra, Michael Fried presents a case against both Andre Weil the "privileged observer" and Pierre de Fermat the "mathematical conqueror." We analyze Fried's version of Unguru's alleged polarity between a historian's and a mathematician's history. We identify some axioms of Friedian historiographic ideology, and propose a thought experiment to gauge its pertinence. Unguru and his disciples Corry, Fried, and Rowe have described Freudenthal, van der Waerden, and Weil as Platonists but provided no evidence; we provide evidence to the contrary. We analyze how the various historiographic approaches play themselves out in the study of the pioneers of mathematical analysis including Fermat, Leibniz, Euler, and Cauchy.

Abstract:The world of mathematics is often considered abstract, with its symbols, concepts, and topics appearing unrelated to physical objects. However, it is important to recognize that the development of mathematics is fundamentally influenced by a basic fact: mathematicians and computers are physical objects subject to the laws of physics. Through an analysis of the Turing machine, it becomes evident that Turing and his contemporaries overlooked a physical possibility: information carriers can be quantum systems. As a result, computing models like the Turing machine can only process classical information, limiting their computing power. Gödel's incompleteness theorem highlights the basic fact that mathematicians and computers are made up of finite numbers of atoms and molecules. They can only start with a finite number of axioms, use a finite number of symbols and deduction rules, and arrive at theorems with a finite number of steps. While the number of proofs may be infinite after including all future mathematicians and computers, they must still be enumerable. In contrast, the number of mathematical statements is uncountable, meaning that there will always be mathematical statements that cannot be proved true or false. Just as Landauer claimed that information is physical, mathematics is also physical, limited or empowered by the physical entities that carry it out or embody it.
