Abstract:We investigate the influence of weak measurement on the quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation and quantum speed limit time in a quantum dissipative system by making use of the hierarchical equations of motion method. It is demonstrated that the weak measurement and measurement reversal can suppress the entropic uncertainty during the evolution of the system, and we find a periodical crossover of the quantum speed limit time for different weak measurement strengths, which disappears when increasing the coupling strength. Similar influence of the weak measurement on uncertainty relations is then explored at the finite temperature. We also consider the effect of the counter-rotating-wave term and show that the rotating-wave approximation is an applicable approximation when studying quantum speed limit time but not appropriate when investigating the quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation. Abstract:The influence of weak measurement along with quantum measurement reversal on the Rydberg atoms system is investigated, and is found to have an important practical significance as both weak measurement along with quantum measurement reversal and Rydberg atoms system can be experimentally realized. The quantum coherence and the entropic uncertainty relation of the system are explored, and it is found that the quantum coherence of the system is enhanced and the values of uncertainty and the uncertainty bound are reduced under some particular weak measurements along with quantum measurement reversals. This indicates that the decoherence effect of the system can be weakened by weak measurement along with quantum measurement reversal. Furthermore, the trace distance which is a reflection of the entanglement is also examined, and it is shown that weak measurement along with quantum measurement reversal can improve the entanglement of the system.

Abstract:The products of weak values of quantum observables are shown to be of value in deriving quantum uncertainty and complementarity relations, for both weak and strong measurement statistics. First, a "product representation formula" allows the standard Heisenberg uncertainty relation to be derived from a classical uncertainty relation for complex random variables. We show this formula also leads to strong uncertainty relations for unitary operators and underlies an interpretation of weak values as optimal (complex) estimates of quantum observables. Furthermore, we show that two incompatible observables that are weakly and strongly measured in a weak measurement context obey a complementarity relation under the interchange of these observables, in the form of an upper bound on the product of the corresponding weak values. Moreover, general tradeoff relations between weak purity, quantum purity, and quantum incompatibility, and also between weak and strong joint probability distributions, are obtained based on products of real and imaginary components of weak values, where these relations quantify the degree to which weak probabilities can take anomalous values in a given context.

Abstract:This work will incorporate a few related tools for addressing the conceptual difficulties arising from sewing together classical and quantum mechanics: deterministic operators, weak measurements and post-selection. Weak Measurement, based on a very weak von Neumann coupling, is a unique kind of quantum measurement with numerous theoretical and practical applications. In contrast to other measurement techniques, it allows to gather a small amount of information regarding the quantum system, with only a negligible probability of collapsing it. A single weak measurement yields an almost random outcome, but when performed repeatedly over a large ensemble, the averaged outcome becomes increasingly robust and accurate. Importantly, a long sequence of weak measurements can be thought of as a single projective measurement. I claim in this work that classical variables appearing in the macro-world, such as centre of mass, moment of inertia, pressure and average forces, result from a multitude of quantum weak measurements performed in the micro-world. Here again, the quantum outcomes are highly uncertain, but the law of large numbers obliges their convergence to the definite quantities we know from our everyday lives. By augmenting this description with a final boundary condition and employing the notion of "classical robustness under time-reversal" I will draw a quantitative borderline between the classical and quantum regimes. I will conclude by analyzing the role of macroscopic systems in amplifying and recording quantum outcomes.

Abstract:Entanglement and nonlocality are studied in the framework of pre-/post-selected ensembles with the aid of weak measurements and the Two-State-Vector Formalism. In addition to the EPR-Bohm experiment, we revisit the Hardy and Cheshire Cat experiments, whose pre- or post-selected states give rise to curious phenomena. We then turn to even more peculiar phenomenon suggesting "emerging correlations" between independent pre- and post-selected ensembles of particles. This can be viewed as a quantum violation of the classical "pigeonhole principle".

Abstract:A large literature has grown up around the proposed use of 'weak measurements' (i.e., unsharp measurements followed by post-selection) to allegedly provide information about hidden ontological features of quantum systems. This paper attempts to clarify the fact that 'weak measurements' involve strong (projective) measurements on one (pointer) member of an entangled system. The only thing 'weak' about such measurements is that the correlation established via the entanglement does not correspond to eigenstates of the 'weakly measured observable' for the remaining component system(s) subject to the weak measurement. All observed statistics are straightforwardly and easily predicted by standard quantum mechanics. Specifically, it is noted that measurement of the pointer steers the remaining degree(s) of freedom into new states with new statistical properties-constituting a non-trivial (even if generally small) disturbance. In addition, standard quantum mechanics readily allows us to conditionalize on a final state if we choose, so the 'post-selection' that features prominently in time-symmetric formulations is also equipment from standard quantum theory. Assertions in the literature that weak measurements leave a system negligibly disturbed, and/or that standard quantum theory is cumbersome for computing the predicted measurement results, are therefore unsupportable, and ontological claims based on such assertions need to be critically reassessed.

Abstract:Many quantum paradoxes based on a realistic view of weak values were discussed in the last decades. They lead to astonishing conclusions such as the measurement of a spin component of a spin-1/2 particle resulting in $100\hbar$, the separation of a photon from its polarization, and the possibility of having 3 particles in 2 boxes without any 2 particles being in the same box, among others. Here we show that the realistic view of the weak values present in these (and other) works is equivalent to a realistic (and highly controversial) view of quantum measurements, where a measurement reveals the underlying reality of the measured quantity. We discuss that all quantum paradoxes based on weak values simply disappear if we deny these realistic views of quantum measurements and weak values. Our work thus aims to demonstrate the strong assumptions and the corresponding problems present in the interpretation of these quantum paradoxes.

Abstract:We investigate the impact of dissipation, including energy relaxation and decoherence, on weak measurements. While weak measurements have been successful in signal amplification, dissipation can compromise their usefulness. More precisely, we show that in systems with a unique steady state, weak values always converge to an expectation value of the measured observable as dissipation time tends to infinity, in contrast to systems with multiple steady states, where the weak values can remain anomalous, i.e., outside the range of eigenvalues of the observable, even in the limit of an infinite dissipation time. In addition, we propose a method for extracting information about the dissipative dynamics of a system using weak values at short dissipation times. Specifically, we explore the amplification of the dissipation rate in a two-level system and the use of weak values to differentiate between Markovian and non-Markovian dissipative dynamics. We also find that weak measurements operating around a weak atom-cavity coupling can probe the atom dissipation through the weak value of non-Hermitian operators within the rotating-wave approximation of the weak interaction.

Abstract:Any realist interpretation of quantum theory must grapple with the measurement problem and the status of state-vector collapse. In a no-collapse approach, measurement is typically modeled as a dynamical process involving decoherence. We describe how the minimal modal interpretation closes a gap in this dynamical description, leading to a complete and consistent resolution to the measurement problem and an effective form of state collapse. Our interpretation also provides insight into the indivisible nature of measurement--the fact that you can't stop a measurement part-way through and uncover the underlying `ontic' dynamics of the system in question. Having discussed the hidden dynamics of a system's ontic state during measurement, we turn to more general forms of open-system dynamics and explore the extent to which the details of the underlying ontic behavior of a system can be described. We construct a space of ontic trajectories and describe obstructions to defining a probability measure on this space.

Abstract:Quantum measurement is one of the most fascinating and discussed phenomena in quantum physics, due to the impact on the system of the measurement action and the resulting interpretation issues. Scholars proposed weak measurements to amplify measured signals by exploiting a quantity called a weak value, but also to overcome philosophical difficulties related to the system perturbation induced by the measurement process. The method finds many applications and raises many philosophical questions as well, especially about the proper interpretation of the observations. In this paper, we show that any weak value can be expressed as the expectation value of a suitable non-normal operator. We propose a preliminary explanation of their anomalous and amplification behavior based on the theory of non-normal matrices and their link with non-normality: the weak value is different from an eigenvalue when the operator involved in the expectation value is non-normal. Our study paves the way for a deeper understanding of the measurement phenomenon, helps the design of experiments, and it is a call for collaboration to researchers in both fields to unravel new quantum phenomena induced by non-normality.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics, in its orthodox version, imposes severe limits on what can be known, or even said, about the condition of a quantum system between two observations. A relatively new approach, based on so-called "weak measurements", suggests that such forbidden knowledge can be gained by studying the system's response to an inaccurate weakly perturbing measuring device. It goes further to propose revising the whole concept of physics variables, and offers various examples of counterintuitive quantum behaviour. Both views go to the very heart of quantum theory, and yet are rarely compared directly. A new technique must either transcend the orthodox limits, or just prove that these limits are indeed necessary. We study both possibilities, and find for the orthodoxy.

Abstract:We study the time evolution of a quantum system without classical counterpart, undergoing a process of entropy increase due to the environment influence. We show that if the environment-induced decoherence is interpreted in terms of wave-function collapses, a symbolic sequence can be generated. We prove that the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of this sequence coincides with rate of von Neumann entropy increase.

Abstract:We connect the weak measurements framework to the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics. We show how Feynman propagators can in principle be experimentally inferred from weak value measurements. We also obtain expressions for weak values parsing unambiguously the quantum and the classical aspects of weak couplings between a system and a probe. These expressions are shown to be useful in quantum chaos related studies (an illustration involving quantum scars is given), and also in solving current weak-value related controversies (we discuss the existence of discontinuous trajectories in interferometers and the issue of anomalous weak values in the classical limit).

Abstract:Weak values and Kirkwood--Dirac (KD) quasiprobability distributions have been independently associated with both foundational issues in quantum theory and advantages in quantum metrology. We propose simple quantum circuits to measure weak values, KD distributions, and spectra of density matrices without the need for post-selection. This is achieved by measuring unitary-invariant, relational properties of quantum states, which are functions of Bargmann invariants, the concept that underpins our unified perspective. Our circuits also enable experimental implementation of various functions of KD distributions, such as out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) and the quantum Fisher information in post-selected parameter estimation, among others. An upshot is a unified view of nonclassicality in all those tasks. In particular, we discuss how negativity and imaginarity of Bargmann invariants relate to set coherence.

The Weak Reality That Makes Quantum Phenomena More Natural: Novel Insights and Experiments

Abstract:While quantum reality can be probed through measurements, the Two-State Vector Formalism (TSVF) reveals a subtler reality prevailing between measurements. Under special pre- and post-selections, odd physical values emerge. This unusual picture calls for a deeper study. Instead of the common, wave-based picture of quantum mechanics, we suggest a new, particle-based perspective: Each particle possesses a definite location throughout its evolution, while some of its physical variables (characterized by deterministic operators, some of which obey nonlocal equations of motion) are carried by "mirage particles" accounting for its unique behavior. Within the time interval between pre- and post-selection, the particle gives rise to a horde of such mirage particles, of which some can be negative. What appears to be "no-particle", known to give rise to interaction-free measurement, is in fact a self-canceling pair of positive and negative mirage particles, which can be momentarily split and cancel out again. Feasible experiments can give empirical evidence for these fleeting phenomena. In this respect, the Heisenberg ontology is shown to be conceptually advantageous compared to the Schrödinger picture. We review several recent advances, discuss their foundational significance and point out possible directions for future research.

Abstract:The quantum theory of measurement has been with us since quantum mechanics was invented. It has recently been invigorated, partly due to the increasing interest in quantum information science. In this partly pedagogical review I attempt to give a self-contained overview of non-relativistic quantum theory of measurement expressed in density matrix formalism. I will not dwell on the applications in quantum information theory; it is well covered by several books in that field. The focus is instead on applications to the theory of weak measurement, as developed by Aharonov and collaborators. Their development of weak measurement combined with what they call post-selection - judiciously choosing not only the initial state of a system ( pre-selection ) but also its final state - has received much attention recently. Not the least has it opened up new, fruitful experimental vistas, like novel approaches to amplification. But the approach has also attached to it some air of mystery. I will attempt to demystify it by showing that (almost) all results can be derived in a straight-forward way from conventional quantum mechanics. Among other things, I develop the formalism not only to first order but also to second order in the weak interaction responsible for the measurement. I apply it to the so called Leggett-Garg inequalities, also known as Bell inequalities in time . I also give an outline, even if rough, of some of the ingenious experiments that the work by Aharonov and collaborators has inspired. As an application of weak measurement, not related to the approach by Aharonov and collaborators, the formalism also allows me to derive the master equation for the density matrix of an open system in interaction with an environment. An issue that remains in the weak measurement plus post-selection approach is the interpretation of the so called weak value of an observable. Is it a bona fide property of the system considered? I have no definite answer to this question; I shall only exhibit the consequences of the proposed interpretation. Quanta 2013; 2: 18–49.

A Dyson Brownian motion model for weak measurements in chaotic quantum systems

Abstract:We consider a toy model for the study of monitored dynamics in a many-body quantum systems. We study the stochastic Schrodinger equation resulting from the continuous monitoring with a rate $\Gamma$ of a random hermitian operator chosen at every time from the gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE). Due to invariance by unitary transformations, the dynamics of the eigenvalues $\{\lambda_\alpha\}_{\alpha=1}^n$ of the density matrix can be decoupled from that of the eigenvectors. Thus, stochastic equations are derived that exactly describe the dynamics of $\lambda$'s. We consider two regimes: in the presence of an extra dephasing term, which can be generated by imperfect quantum measurements, the density matrix has a stationary distribution, and we show that in the limit of large sizes the distribution of $\lambda$'s is described by an inverse Marchenko Pastur distribution. In the case of perfect measurements instead, purification eventually occurs and we focus on finite-time dynamics. In this case, remarkably, we find an exact solution for the joint probability distribution of $\lambda$'s at each time $t$ and for each size $n$. Two relevant regimes emerge: at small times $t\Gamma= O(1)$, the spectrum is in a Coulomb gas regime, with a well-defined continuous spectral distribution in the limit of $n\to\infty$. In that case, all moments of the density matrix become self-averaging and it is possible to characterize the entanglement spectrum exactly. In the limit of large times $t \Gamma = O(n)$ one enters instead a regime in which the eigenvalues are exponentially separated $\log(\lambda_\alpha/\lambda_\beta) = O(\Gamma t/n)$, but fluctuations $\sim O(\sqrt{\Gamma t/n})$ play an essential role. We are still able to characterize the asymptotic behaviors of entanglement entropy in this regime.

Interpreting weak value amplification with a toy realist model

Abstract:Constructing an ontology for quantum theory is challenging, in part due to unavoidable measurement back-action. The Aharonov-Albert-Vaidman weak measurement formalism provides a method to predict measurement results (weak values) in a regime where back-action is negligible. The weak value appears analogous to a classical conditional mean and in fact, has a number of features that further suggest it may be interpreted as being related to some underlying ontological model. However, the ontology appears bizarre since the weak values are complex and unbounded. Here, we study weak values in the context of a recent quantum optical experiment involving two-photon interactions. The results of the experiment are reinterpreted within a 'stochastic optics' model of light. The model is based on standard (Maxwell) electromagnetic theory, supplemented by stochastic fluctuations of the electromagnetic fields. We show that the conditional means of the electric field intensities correspond to the experimentally observed weak values. This is a provocative result, as it suggests that at least within this experiment, the weak value gives us information about the average of an ontological quantity (the intensity). We study the breakdown of the stochastic optics model, which occurs outside the experimentally probed regime, and in particular in the limit where the weak value predicts 'anomalous' results.
