Abstract:Abstract The topics of equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, and Indigenization have been neglected in academic and research integrity. In this article, I offer examples of how these issues are being addressed and argue that academic integrity networks and organizations ought to develop intentional strategies for equity, diversity and inclusion, and decolonization in terms of leadership, scholarship, and professional opportunities. I point out that existing systems perpetuate the conditions that allow for overrepresentation of reporting among particular student groups including international students, students of colour, and those for whom English is an additional language. I conclude with concrete recommendations for action.

Abstract:Though many colleges and universities claim tobe driven by missions that highlight access, equity, and student success, academic policy andpractice do not always mirror these claims. American higher education institutions are “obsessedwith smartness” (Astin, 2017), yet fail to supporteducational attainment in an equitable manner. Educational inequality has its roots in PK–12 education(Dorn, 2017; Ladson-Billings, 2007) particularly asit relates to deficit ideology. The manifestations ofdeficit ideology in higher education are most starkly seen in how students on academic warning (also referred to as academic probation) are treated bothin action and by policy. For higher education institutions to meet their missions for access, equity, andsuccess, they must address how their “systems ofsupport” perpetuate deficit thinking. As the natureof higher education and the demographics of thoseenrolled continues to change and diversify, the timeis right for higher education practitioners to interrogate and change harmful practices. We offer aframework for how institutions can build capacityfor academic support program staff to identify deficit practices that systemically perpetuate inequities,so we no longer hinder student growth and academic success.

Abstract:Although the organizational justice theoretical framework has been used frequently across a wide variety of settings, its use in examining higher education institutions has been limited. The purpose of the study reported here was to begin the process of applying this framework to higher education by identifying the distributive justice sub-principles of equity in this setting. For the study we interviewed nine academic deans across diverse disciplines and identified five sub-principles. These sub-principles of equity were (a) quantity and quality of research publications, (b) external research funding, (c) quality of teaching, (d) impact on students, and (e) quality service. There were differences in the relative importance of these five possible contributions to the institution, as well as how they were assessed. The five sub-principles can be used in future research to examine higher education resource distributions and their impact more fully.

Abstract:Higher education systems across the globally have adopted policies to provide a curriculum which is underpinned by the fundamental values of equality, inclusivity, and diversity. However, owing to lack of transformation and the practical implementation of these policies, higher education is still significantly entrenched in Eurocentric epistemologies which expose students to a learning environment which does not represent their social identities. This has led to the intensification of discourses on decolonisation epistemologies. At the centre of these decolonisation epistemologies is their advocacy for the recognition of indigenous epistemologies and ontologies in the learning environment. Of importance to these discourses is social justice issues that influence the 21st-century curriculum. Guided by the Critical Theory of Education, this study explored social justice issues that inform the 21st-century curriculum from a lecturers’ perspective. Data was collected from thirty-two purposefully selected lecturers from all universities in South Africa using a questionnaire with a Likert scale. The findings demonstrate that academic imperialism, language equity, equality, inclusivity, and diversity are the major issues of social justice that influence the 21st-century curriculum. To promote these social justice issues, this study advocates for radical transformation in language policies and pedagogical practices in higher education. The study further calls for the practical dismantling of the current dispensation in higher education which perpetuates social injustice and inequality. Educational policies need to respond purposefully to calls to decolonise the 21st-century curriculum holistically and create an education system which works for every student on these social justice issues.
Unraveling the Layers of Inequality Among Chinese International High School Students

Abstract:China's education system encompasses both regular and international high schools, catering to students seeking a global education experience. However, the association of international education with high costs raises concerns about educational inequality. This essay delves into the problem of educational inequality within Chinese international secondary high schools, employing an interdisciplinary socio-political perspective that considers both economic and cultural factors. Drawing upon Michael Sandel's educational theory and Pierre Bourdieu's examination of cultural capital and habitus, this research identifies two primary factors contributing to educational inequality. Firstly, regional wealth disparities and economic differences among individuals can result in unequal access to international education opportunities. Secondly, differences in the possession and utilization of cultural capital among students attending Chinese international schools further exacerbate these inequalities. Despite these challenges, the analysis highlights the potential for resolution. Collaboration between governments, schools, and individuals is essential to build a more equitable international education landscape. Policymakers may focus on providing financial support and scholarships to economically disadvantaged students, ensuring that no student is denied access based on financial constraints. Moreover, schools can implement inclusive admission practices and bridge programs to support students from diverse backgrounds. Emphasizing cultural competence within the curriculum can also help minimize cultural capital disparities and promote a more inclusive learning environment. Ultimately, by acknowledging and addressing the underlying factors that contribute to educational inequality, Chinese international high schools can become catalysts for positive change and provide a level playing field for students aspiring to gain a global education experience.

Perspectives: Policy and Practice in Higher Education

Abstract:Post-pandemic, there is a growing recognition that higher education needs to take a more proactive role in addressing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals – the 17 goals for 2030 that aim to balance global economic development with the need to tackle climate change and protect our natural ecosystems. This change of focus has profound implications for international higher education. For universities in countries like Australia, New Zealand and the UK, internationalisation has underpinned a successful business model. Recruiting children of wealthy elites in developing countries and charging them high tuition fees allows universities to invest in research and facilities and drive themselves up global rankings tables. But recruiting students from the Global South imposes an environmental cost in terms of the carbon footprint and perpetuates structural inequality. This article explores solutions to moving beyond the current business model and adopting an internationalisation strategy that prioritises social justice and environmental sustainability.

Abstract:Ensuring the equity of access to higher education,in particular preserving higher education opportunities for the disadvantaged groups,has become a higher education and policy issue across national borders.This issue has been further magnified in the process of higher education expansion.By assessing the equity issue in the expansion of the British higher education,this paper concludes that,in fact,many of the inequities in access to higher education are formed in the stages of primary and secondary education.Therefore,more has to be done outside higher education to improve the equity of access to higher education.

Abstract:This study investigates race equality at The University of Sunderland in London through an analysis of practices and perspectives. Interviews were conducted with Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students, staff, and affiliated individuals, revealing seven major themes: Curriculum, Covid, Diversity, Personal Sphere, Institution, Belonging, and Technology. These themes offer valuable recommendations for fostering a more diverse and inclusive environment, improving the academic experience in UK Higher Education Institutions. To promote diversity, it is essential to ensure balanced student representation in classes and incorporate diversity considerations in recruitment and allocation processes. Creating a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion is crucial for a positive learning environment. Mentorship programs can facilitate inclusivity, pairing BAME students with experienced staff. Policies should be reviewed to ensure inclusivity and non-discrimination. Increasing representation of people of colour in senior management roles enhances staff diversity. Staff training on creating an inclusive environment is important. Transparent and fair recruitment processes are necessary to avoid bias. Implementing these recommendations can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable higher education landscape, benefiting both students and staff.
The role of higher education in social mobility

Abstract:Most Americans expect the nation's colleges and universities to promote the goal of social mobility to make it possible for anyone with ability and motivation to succeed. But according to Robert Haveman and Timothy Smeeding, income-related gaps both in access to and in success in higher education are large and growing. In the top-tier colleges and universities, almost three-quarters of the entering class is from the highest socioeconomic quartile. The pool of qualified youth is far greater than the number admitted and enrolled; hence America's top colleges could enroll more moderate- and low-income students without lowering their selection standards. Higher-income parents make enormous efforts to ensure their children's academic success, while children of poor parents begin the "college education game" later and with fewer resources. Students in poor and minority neighborhoods are less well prepared academically; ill prepared to select colleges, apply for admission, and secure acceptance; and poorly informed about the cost of attending college and the availability of needs-based financial aid. Sharply rising college prices during the 1980s and 1990s, together with the growing inequality of family income, have raised the cost of attending college far more for low-income students than for well-to-do students. Financial aid has risen more slowly, and the share targeted on low-income students has been falling. The authors offer bold policy recommendations to increase educational opportunities for low- and middle-income students. These involve the development of financing structures that will increase access for students from lower-income families. Public institutions could price tuition close to real costs and use added revenues to provide direct student aid for students from low-income families. Federal subsidies to students who attend wealthy institutions could be capped, with the savings redirected to students attending less well-endowed schools, both public and private. Finally, federal and state governments could redirect to lower-income students the financial support they now provide colleges and universities.

Abstract:Diversity work remains one of the most critical, yet complicated and contentious efforts in higher education. To promote transformative institutional change, a university in California, United States developed an innovative, federally funded community-building model designed to institutionalize diversity efforts. As part of this model, a cross-sectional climate survey was administered in 2010, 2014, and 2018 to learn more about perceptions of campus diversity-oriented work. We present a qualitative, Critical Race Theory analysis of faculty and graduate student responses to the open-ended question, “What do you think we should know about diversity at [this university]?” These data offer a window into a unique period of American history when politics were, and continue to be, especially contentious and social inequality was, and is, at the forefront of American consciousness. We conclude with respondent-inspired suggestions for moving higher education toward social justice.

Abstract:The Chinese higher education system has experienced a dramatic expansion in student numbers since 1998. Along with the rapid expansion in student numbers came the introduction and rapid growth of nonpublic degree-granting institutions, including the private and the so-called independent institutions. In this context, the study reported in this article aimed to answer the following question: What is the impact of the different types of institutions on students' access to higher education? The study concluded that the government's general subsidies to public institutions may have been regressive in that they more often benefit students who are in less need of them, and that although the establishment of new types of institutions has created new opportunities for accessing higher education, it has also led to new inequalities in terms of the relative cost and prestige of education at different types of institutions.

Abstract:Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a critical role in creating and distributing the knowledge required to tackle the complex global challenges faced by society today. This role is frequently linked with the concept of the internationalization of higher education, but this concept in practice is also subject to criticism. This article argues that integrating the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals (SDGs) into the teaching and learning functions, partnerships, research, and discovery functions of institutions has the potential to transform institutions and improve society through internationalization. In this article, the ideological and practical intersections of internationalization and the SDGs are discussed. Examples of initiatives around the world that have shaped societal discourse through the lens of internationalization and sustainable development are reviewed. The authors posit that integration of both concepts would enable HEIs to rise up to the global challenge of creating a better world for all.

Shifting the mindset culture to address global educational disparities

Abstract:Educational outcomes remain highly unequal within and across nations. Students' mindsets-their beliefs about whether intellectual abilities can be developed-have been identified as a potential lever for making adolescents' academic outcomes more equitable. Recent research, however, suggests that intervention programs aimed at changing students' mindsets should be supplemented by programs aimed at the changing the mindset culture, which is defined as the shared set of beliefs about learning in a school or classroom. This paper reviews the theoretical and empirical origin of the mindset culture and examines its potential to reduce group-based inequalities in education. In particular, experiments have identified two broad ways the mindset culture is communicated by teachers: via informal messages about growth (e.g., that all students will be helped to learn and succeed), and formal opportunities to improve (e.g., learning-focused grading policies and opportunities to revise and earn credit). New field experiments, applying techniques from behavioral science, have also revealed effective ways to influence teachers' culture-creating behaviors. This paper describes recent breakthroughs in the U.S. educational context and discusses how lessons from these studies might be applied in future, global collaborations with researchers and practitioners.

Abstract:The development of the global education mission has been strengthened by the widening perspective of transnationalism for higher education. The mobility of international higher education (IHR) has become a global hot trend especially over the past few decades. China continues to be the single largest and fastest-growing nation in terms of sending student bodies for overseas tertiary education today. With the booming of international higher education (IHE) seeking, Chinese international students (CIS) are however troubled by a series of sociocultural and communication challenges, damaging their education outcomes, aspirations, labor market preparations, as well as global education efficiency. This paper explores the major reasons that intrigue CIS to seek IHE, common obstacles they encounter during their foreign education journey, and existent coping strategies. The paper ends with an outlook into a new strategy which requires more researching and data gathering; it serves as a preliminary step to a future proposal of a multidimensional model.

Accordingly, the HEIs should be such that can tackle social and economic questions and impact public policy. Interestingly, for attaining the desired and meaningful outcomes, HE funding should be accompanied by a corresponding development of faculty capabilities, including nurturing a vibrant academic culture and placing an emphasis on quality research. Moreover, every HEI should develop an institution-based research thrust across disciplines as envisaged in the New Education Policy, 2020.

Abstract:AlterNative: An International Journal of Indigenous Peoples, Ahead of Print. Indigenous knowledges are largely absent from higher education institutions' efforts to pursue excellence and innovation. Grounded in decolonization literature and institutional theory, this article examines how Indigenous peoples of Canada have engaged with innovation discourses in higher education. Through document analysis of 15 research-intensive Canadian universities and conversation with 13 Indigenous peoples, the article analyses political, functional, and normative pressures associated with Indigenous knowledges shaping Canadian universities. The article demonstrates how Indigenous groups have been able to push post-secondary institutions towards a normative shift in organizational structure. The article also shows how approaching innovation from decolonizing perspectives can provide a way forward for equitable higher education systems, advocating for re-imagining the dominant market economy, and focusing on learning from Indigenous worldviews that centre around reciprocity, ecological sustainability, and connection to land.

Abstract:Journal of Adult and Continuing Education, Ahead of Print. Introduction: South Africa has a unique history of racial inequality, which in turn contributed to gender inequalities in the country – also within higher education. Gender equality is one of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Higher education can contribute to this SDG by setting an example in the community for creating healthy and socially just conditions for their female staff and students. Methods: Female employees from all staff components (academic, support services, and operational staff) of a South African University of Technology participated in focus group discussions to determine their gender equality experiences. Facilitating questions were used to guide the conversations. Thematic analyses of the transcribed focus group discussions were conducted, and emerging themes were explored. Results: Some male colleagues prefer to work solely with other male colleagues, resulting in women being sidelined and feeling voiceless. Female employees reported being harassed by students and having difficulty managing professional and family life. They were also concerned about their future based on their gender. Services staff had positive experiences engaging with male students, staff, and supervisors. Conclusion and implications: It is imperative for higher education institutions' growth and development and fulfilling their role in contributing to the SDGs that gender equality be prioritised. The unique traditional and cultural burdens of South African women in higher education should be taken into consideration when re-imagining gender equality. By aligning their efforts with the SDGs, universities can contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future, paving the way for transformative change within society.

Abstract:This chapter asserts the need to renovate and improve the equity framework advanced in A Fair Chance for All in order to support and shape the future of Australian higher education. Failing to renovate this national framework after 25 years renders it exposed to being further swamped and sidelined by other institutional and national initiatives, with many such initiatives residing outside the Framework in an undefined fashion. In this chapter we affirm the continued need for a national equity framework, but suggest that it must be expanded to fit contemporary contexts and do more to ameliorate educational disadvantage in Australia. We advance the need to create a more sophisticated perspective on student success that shifts focus from access to outcomes. Abstract:Yang and Cheng underscore the locally embedded rationales that underpin both institutional and individual experiences of contemporary higher education (HE). Drawing on two empirically researched case studies, comprising of (1) student mobility between China, India, and Singapore and (2) transnationalization of HE involving cross-border provision of educational programs in Singapore, they reveal how uneven mobilities and transnational linkages continue to be shaped by global hierarchies of knowledge, prestige, and reputation. They further suggest that current preoccupations with fourth industrial revolution’s impact on HE is colored by technocratic and technophilic discourses that ignore ‘on the ground’ experiences of the disadvantaged and marginalized. As such, critical and culturalist perspective is both timely and essential to advance a more complex understanding of an increasingly mobile and transnationalized HE landscape.

Abstract:A new kind of gender equality ideology is rising in popularity in Western societies. While emphasising gender equality for the next generation, this new ideology sees feminism in a pragmatic and simplistic way, as nonthreatening to the status quo, in politics, popular culture, and economy. In the economic sphere, Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In” has become well known for aiming to guide women to succeed alongside men in the workplace by changing their behaviours and attitudes. Its recommendations for women have impacted perspectives in the non- rofit and start-up worlds, arts, and more. However, there are some limitations to the kind of feminist thinking exemplified by Lean In. This article critically examines Lean In as a discourse or ideology in relation to higher education within and outside Western societies. I argue first that such ideology employs a deficiency model of gender equality that makes women accountable for sexism by focusing on internal rather than external change. Second, I argue that such discourses essentialize gender. Third, I argue that it is not easy to translate the advice given to women across international contexts, as Lean In reflects cultural conceptions of the workplace.
