Engaging young minds with particle physics

Abstract:To give teenagers a new, everyday perspective on STEM topics, we use particle physics as our main topic to engage young students. Our strategy is designed to demystify particle physics, making it more accessible and attractive early in high school. In Germany, students usually decide whether or not to continue their physics education around the age of 15. That's why our project is aimed specifically at students aged 10 to 15 to give them a real insight into particle physics research before they have to make a final decision about continuing physics. Our efforts have focused on creating educational and engaging workshops for young learners. We have reached over 620 students across these age groups through more than 25 events in the last two years. The initial results are promising, indicating that our efforts are successfully igniting a motivation for physics, especially among girls. In this proceeding, we will present our workshops, the methodologies we use and a first evaluation.

Abstract:In this article, I set out arguments why the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) : the machine and the experiments with it, are a watershed for particle physics. I give a historical perspective of the essential link between development of particle accelerators and that in our knowledge of the laws governing interactions among the fundamental particles, showing how this journey has reached destination LHC. I explain how the decisions for the LHC design; the energy and number of particles in the beam, were arrived at. I will end by discussing the LHC physics agenda and the time line in which the particle physicists hope to achieve it.

Abstract:Since its inception, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has significantly advanced particle physics and will continue to do so in the context of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) program to collect $3000$ fb$^{-1}$ by the end of 2041. The particle physics community worldwide is discussing which future collider could follow in the footsteps of the LHC and uncover yet inaccessible phenomena. To foster the discussion on this important topic among the young particle physicist community, the Early-Career Researchers (ECR) panel of the European Committee for Future Colliders (ECFA) has organized the Future Colliders for Early-Career Researchers workshop at CERN in September 2023. This document aims to summarise this event and present the ECR perspective, outline the key questions that came up during the discussions, and explore how ECRs can influence the decision process of future colliders community and beyond.

Abstract:These days, while the landscape of discoveries at LHC has yet to be unveiled, planning for upgrades twenty years or more in advance towards a possible experimental scenario, might sound very imaginative and ambitious. Nevertheless, as plans are being worked out for the High Luminosity LHC upgrade, it is possible to plan keeping the ATLAS and CMS detectors operational for the following High Energy phase. The natural and radiation-induced aging of some components, calorimeters especially, needs to be carefully addressed. Even planning for a very new detector might not be unreasonable.

Abstract:An analysis of barriers to women's participation in physics education is presented. It is expected that in undergraduate physics the most common situation for a women is that she is cisgender and one of a numerical minority in the classroom. The effects of other intersectional identities are not considered. The analysis is based on evidence from the author's lived experience as a transgender woman who transitioned as an undergraduate and on evidence from the literature on the effects of gender differences in academic disciplines. It is expected that the teaching philosophy and practice in physics classrooms favours men over women and these gender dynamics are partially responsible for the under-representation of women in physics. These expectations require further research to be substantiated.

Abstract:Since 2016 the group known as `The Big Bang Collective' has brought High Energy Physics outreach to music and culture festivals across Europe, successfully engaging with and inspiring audiences who may never have sought this out themselves through activities in their `Physics Pavilions'. The US has a very long, glorious tradition of music festivals, and an incredible community of sci-comm engaged physicists, from students to senior staff. Abstract:The members of large High Energy Physics (HEP) collaborations come from all over the world.In the case of the ATLAS Collaboration, many of its members come from Latin American, Middle Eastern and Sub-Saharan countries, and so they understand that in many places it can be a challenge to teach experimental HEP.But all members of the collaboration also recognise the massive potential that the always-increasing university student population has, not only concerning fundamental physics but also regarding computing-sciences skills.For that reason, several outreach teams, which include ATLAS, IPPOG, CEVALE2VE members and many other researchers, have been developing and examining free Open Source technologies to release data and to provide effective web-based and offline environments to run, produce, save and share HEP physics analyses.After several years, and with the help of other outreach programmes like the Virtual Visits, ATLAS established an active community that is not just releasing knowledge, data and resources, but genuinely training new physicists who are pursuing advanced studies in experimental HEP right now.
