Abstract:During a substorm on 27 January 2004, energetic particle injections associated with ULF waves have been detected when Cluster fleet was traveling inbound in the Southern Hemisphere. Substorm‐injected energetic particles are strong and clearly modulated by these ULF waves. The ULF waves with the period of 1 min are probably the third harmonic mode. The periodic pitch angle dispersion signatures at 5.2–6.9 keV energy channel were detected by Cluster satellite. These thermal plasma have high coherence with the electric field of the third harmonic poloidal mode and satisfy the drift‐bounce resonant condition of N = 2. In addition, ion outflows from the Earth's ionosphere (tens to hundreds of eV) are also observed to be modulated by these ULF waves. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to show that ULF waves can simultaneously interact with both substorm‐injected “hot” particles from the magnetotail and cold outflow ions from the Earth's ionosphere.
The Distribution and Evolution of Storm Time Pc3-5 ULF Wave Power Based on Satellite and Ground Observations

Abstract:The geomagnetic storm is an intense geomagnetic activity, and one important research aspect is the storm time ultralow frequency (ULF) waves, which can resonate with injected particles and impact particle dynamics in the inner magnetosphere. This study focuses on analyzing ULF wave power during geomagnetic storms on the ground, in the magnetosphere and in the solar wind. During the Van Allen Probe era from year 2012-2019, we identified 94 geomagnetic storm events with 25 as strong storms and 69 as moderate storms based on the variation of SYM-H index. The analysis revealed that for both satellite and ground-based measurements during storms with different intensity, the ULF wave power was dramatically enhanced in the main phase. In addition, the ULF wave power of strong storms was significantly stronger than that of moderate storms within the magnetosphere and on the ground. While the finding is opposite in the solar wind. Furthermore, the ULF wave power of strong storms exhibited a higher intensity at higher L shell values and in some cases, it can last up to similar to 2 days. Besides, the ULF wave power displayed a linear correlation with the absolute value of the SYM-H index during the storm main phase while it exhibited an exponential association with the absolute value of the SYM-H index during the recovery phase. This comprehensive analysis offers valuable insights into the evolution of ULF waves in the inner magnetosphere during geomagnetic storm events, shedding light on plasma waves and wave-particle interactions in this region. Abstract:In Earth's magnetosphere, the behavior of charged particles in response to ultralow‐frequency (ULF) waves has long been understood in the framework of their resonant interactions with standing hydromagnetic waves. It has been argued that for impulse‐excited waves, it may take a few wave cycles for the standing structure to be fully established; during these initial cycles, the waves should propagate along magnetic field lines before they are reflected from the ionosphere and are superimposed to form standing waves. However, it has been unclear how particles behave during the initial, traveling stage of the ULF wave evolution. Here we use a simplistic model of ULF wave evolution from traveling to standing waves, to investigate the response of low‐energy electrons (presumably of plasmaspheric and/or ionospheric origin) immediately after the wave excitation. We find that an off‐equatorial spacecraft would observe dispersive signatures in both energy and pitch angle spectra of electron fluxes, and the flux modulation may appear (at specific pitch angle and energy ranges) prior to the electromagnetic oscillations. These predicted signatures, consistent with the scenario of field‐aligned streaming electrons surfing on traveling ULF waves, are indeed observed by the Cluster spacecraft during an ULF wave event on 25 September 2001. Our identification of such signatures, therefore, provides a new understanding of ULF wave evolution and wave‐particle interactions in the inner magnetosphere.

Abstract:Ultralow frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves in Earth's magnetosphere can accelerate charged particles via a process called drift resonance. In the conventional drift resonance theory, a default assumption is that the wave growth rate is time independent, positive, and extremely small. However, this is not the case for ULF waves in the real magnetosphere. The ULF waves must have experienced an earlier growth stage when their energy was taken from external and/or internal sources, and as time proceeds the waves have to be damped with a negative growth rate. Therefore, a more generalized theory on particle behavior during different stages of ULF wave evolution is required. In this paper, we introduce a time-dependent imaginary wave frequency to accommodate the growth and damping of the waves in the drift resonance theory, so that the wave-particle interactions during the entire wave lifespan can be studied. We then predict from the generalized theory particle signatures during different stages of the wave evolution, which are consistent with observations from Van Allen Probes. The more generalized theory, therefore, provides new insights into ULF wave evolution and wave-particle interactions in the magnetosphere.

Abstract:We present Van Allen Probes observations of periodic chorus wave emissions in the troughs of compressional ultralow frequency (ULF) waves. During this event, the spectral gap of chorus waves gradually widens as the spacecraft moves from the equatorial source region towards higher latitudes. Moreover, chorus wave intensity increases and frequency range widens after a substorm injection. We show that the periodic occurrence of chorus waves is attributed to the modulation of threshold amplitude for nonlinear growth of chorus waves by the second spatial derivative of ULF compressional magnetic field. The widening gap can be interpreted in terms of the nonlinear damping mechanism. A good agreement is also found between the nonlinear wave growth theory and the observations regarding the influence of substorm injection on the chorus. These findings support the applicability of the nonlinear theory in describing the chorus wave generation and damping, together with their modulations by ULF waves.

Abstract:Ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves play a fundamental role in mass transportation and particle acceleration -during solar wind-magnetosphere coupling process. The physical processes of large-scale magnetohydrody-namic (MHD) waves are active topics in space physics research. Spacecraft observations have proved the ULF waves' effect on prompt acceleration of radiation belt electrons and ring current ions. Recent research progress on ULF waves' interaction with cold plasmaspheric particles becomes a hot topic. In this paper, we briefly review recent findings about how ULF waves are controlled by the evolution of plasmaspheric plume structure, how cold plasmaspheric particles are affected by ULF waves, and whether plasmaspheric density structures (e.g., plasmapause and plasmaspheric plumes) are associated with the generation of ULF electromagnetic -ion-cyclotron (EMIC) waves.

Abstract:Abstract We report a new modeling capability that self‐consistently couples physics‐based magnetospheric electron precipitation with its impact on the ionosphere. Specifically, the ring current model RAM‐SCBE is two‐way coupled to an ionospheric electron transport model GLOW, representing a significant improvement over previous models, in which the ionosphere is either treated as a 2D spherical boundary of the magnetosphere, or is driven by empirical precipitation models that are incapable of capturing small‐scale, transient variations. The new model enables us to study the impact of substorm‐associated, spectrum‐resolved electron precipitation on the 3D ionosphere. We found that after each substorm injection, a high‐energy tail of precipitation is produced in the dawn sector outside the plasmapause, by energetic electrons (10<E<100 keV) scattered by whistler‐mode chorus waves. Consequently, an ionospheric sub‐layer characterized by enhanced Pedersen conductivity arises at unusually low altitude (∼85 km), with its latitudinal width of ∼5‐10° in the auroral zone. The sub‐layer structure appears intermittently, in correlation with recurrent substorm injections. It propagates eastward from the nightside to the dayside in the same drift direction of source electrons injected from the plasmasheet, resulting in global impact within the ionosphere. This study demonstrates the model's capability of revealing complex cross‐scale interactions in the geospace environment.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to understand how low energy plasmaspheric electrons respond to ULF waves excited by interplanetary shocks impinging on magnetosphere. It is found that both energy and pitch angle dispersed plasmaspheric electrons with energy of a few eV to tens of eV can be generated simultaneously by the interplanetary shock. The subsequent period of successive dispersion signatures is around 40 s and is consistent with the ULF wave period (third harmonic). By tracing back the energy and pitch angle dispersion signatures, the position of the electron injection region is found to be off-equator at around -32 degrees in the southern hemisphere. This can be explained as the result of injected electrons being accelerated by higher harmonic ULF waves (e.g. third harmonic) which carry a larger amplitude electric field off-equator. The dispersion signatures are due to the flux modulations (or accelerations) of "local" plasmaspheric electrons rather than electrons from the ionosphere. With the observed wave-borne large electric field excited by the interplanetary shock impact, the kinetic energy can increase to a maximum of 23 percent in one bouncing cycle for plasmaspheric electrons satisfying the drift-bounce resonance condition by taking account of both the corotating drift and bounce motion of the local plasmaspheric electron.
Prompt Enhancements of Radiation Belt Electrons over a Wide Energy Range Based on Phase Space Density Variations: A Detailed Case Study

Abstract:Based on Van Allen Probes observations, we report a prompt enhancement event of radiation belt electrons over a wide energy range from tens of keV to multiple meV spanning 2013 January 13–15. During this period, we also observe prolonged moderate substorm activities and intense whistler-mode chorus emissions. To differentiate the underlying mechanisms responsible for this prompt electron enhancement process, we investigate in detail the evolution of electron phase space densities (PSDs) for various values of the first and second adiabatic invariants (μ and K). The results show that tens to hundreds of keV electrons rapidly penetrated to L* < 4 during the substorm period, with the corresponding PSDs increasing by more than 3 orders of magnitude within about 1 day. Comparatively, the PSD enhancements of higher energy electrons are less significant and shift to higher L*. We find that the fast acceleration of hundreds of keV seed electrons to multi-meV electrons may be reasonably attributed to interactions with the concurrent chorus waves. Specifically, the electron PSD increases for μ≥ 300 MeV G −1 become less pronounced as K increases, consistent with the pitch angle dependence of chorus-induced electron energy diffusion at high energies. Our results therefore provide clear observational evidence for the combined effect of substorm-induced injection and chorus wave scattering on the prompt enhancements of radiation belt electrons over a wide energy range within a couple of days.

Interaction of ULF Waves with Different Ion Species: Pitch Angle and Phase Space Density Implications

Abstract:ULF waves can accelerate/decelerate the charged particles including the ring current ions via drift-bounce resonance, which play an important role in the dynamics of ring current during storm times. This study compares the different behaviors of oxygen ions (10.5-35.1 keV) and protons (0.3-12.3 keV) which simultaneously interact with Pc5 ULF waves observed by Cluster on 3 June 2003. The ULF waves are identified as the fundamental mode oscillations. Both oxygen ions and protons show periodic energy dispersion and pitch angle dispersion signatures, which satisfy the drift-bounce resonance condition of N=2. The different behaviors of oxygen ions and protons include (1) the resonant energy of oxygen ions is higher than that of protons due to mass difference; (2) the phase space density (PSD) of oxygen ions show relative variations (3.6-6.3) that are much larger than that of protons (<0.4), which indicates a more efficient energy exchange between oxygen ions and ULF waves; (3) the PSD spectra show that oxygen ions are accelerated, while protons are decelerated, which depend on the radial gradient of their PSD; (4) the pitch angle distributions (PADs) of the oxygen ions and protons show negative slope and bidirectional field-aligned features, respectively, which is related to the preexisting state of ion PADs before the interaction with the ULF waves. In addition, the resonant ions with peak fluxes tracing back to the magnetic equator are always collocated with the accelerating (westward) electric field, which indicate that the ions are mainly accelerated near the magnetic equator and the electric field intensity of ULF waves peaks there.

Abstract:We investigate the magnetospheric MHD and energetic electron response to a Storm Sudden Commencement (SSC) and subsequent magnetopause buffeting, focusing on an interval following an SSC event on 25 November 2001. We find that the electron flux signatures observed by LANL, Cluster, and GOES spacecraft during this event can largely be reproduced using an advective kinetic model for electron phase space density, using externally prescribed electromagnetic field inputs, (herein described as a test-kinetic model) with electromagnetic field inputs provided by a 2-D linear ideal MHD model for ULF waves. In particular, we find modulations in electron flux phase shifted by 90 degrees from the local azimuthal ULF wave electric field (E) and a net enhancement in electron flux after 1.5 h for energies between 500 keV and 1.5 MeV near geosynchronous orbit. We also demonstrate that electrons in this energy range satisfy the drift resonance condition for the ULF waves produced by the MHD model. This confirms the conclusions reached by Tan et al. (2011), that the energization process in this case is dominated by drift-resonant interactions between electrons and MHD fast mode waves, produced by fluctuations in solar wind dynamic pressure.
Propagation of Interplanetary Shock Excited Ultra Low Frequency (ulf) Waves in Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Atmosphere-Multi-Spacecraft "cluster" and Ground-Based Magnetometer Observations

Abstract:The ultra low frequency (ULF) wave in magnetosphere can act as an important means for solar wind energy inward transmission. This paper quantitatively analyzes the propagation process of the ULF wave triggered by the interplanetary shock propagating from inner magnetosphere equatorial plane along magnetic field lines to the top of the ionosphere and below ionosphere propagating process and establishes a relatively complete magnetosphere-ionosphere-atmosphere propagation model which can be used to study the relationship between the amplitude of the ULF waves triggered by the interplanetary shock wave in magnetospheric space and the magnetic effect caused by the ULF waves. After a comparison with recent observations, we found that: in the event during November 7, 2004 that an interplanetary shock wave interacted with the magnetosphere, Cluster satellites observed that electric field fluctuations and the band-pass filtered result of ground stations meridional component had similar characteristics. Comparing with the geomagnetic measurement near the footprints, we found that the electric field disturbance in the magnetosphere spread along the ground magnetic field lines in the form of the ULF waves and changed into geomagnetic disturbance. The result reveals that the ULF wave is in contact with the ground geomagnetic observation. The ULF waves couple with ionized components in ionosphere and spread to the ground in the form of electromagnetic waves. In this research, we believe that the magnetosphere, ionosphere and ground magnetic effects caused by interplanetary shock wave are the same physical phenomena responding in different locations. Based on the overall consideration of entire electromagnetic response to the interplanetary shock wave, we found that the correlation between CLUSTER multi-satellite observation and geomagnetic station observation is due to the ULF wave propagated in magnetosphere-ionosphere-atmosphere system, and we quantitatively interpreted this response process.
On the Close Correspondence between Storm-time ULF Wave Power and the POES VLF Chorus Wave Amplitude Proxy

Abstract:Ground-based Pc5 ULF wave power in multiple ground-based meridians is compared to the VLF wave amplitude proxy, derived from POES precipitation, for the 33 storms studied by Li et al. [2015]. The results reveal common L-shell and time profiles for the ULF waves and VLF proxy for every single storm, especially at $L\leq 6$, and identical discrimination between efficient and inefficient radiation belt electron acceleration. The observations imply either ULF waves play a role in driving precipitation which is falsely interpreted as VLF wave power in the proxy, ULF waves drive VLF waves (the reverse being energetically unfeasible), or both have a common driver with nearly identical L-shell and time-dependence. Global ground-based ULF wave power coherence implies a small number of meridians can be used to estimate storm-time radial diffusion coefficients. However, the strong correspondence between ULF wave power and VLF wave proxy complicates causative assessments of electron acceleration.

Abstract:We present Van Allen Probe observation of drift-resonance interaction between energetic electrons and ultralow frequency (ULF) waves on 29 October 2013. Oscillations in electron flux were observed at the period of similar to 450 s, which is also the dominant period of the observed ULF magnetic pulsations. The phase shift of the electron fluxes (similar to 50 to 150 keV) across the estimated resonant energy (similar to 104 keV) is similar to 360 degrees. This phase relationship is different from the characteristic 180 degrees phase shift as expected from the drift-resonance theory. We speculate that the additional 180 degrees phase difference arises from the inversion of electron phase space density (PSD) gradient, which in turn is caused by the drift motion of the substorm injected electrons. This PSD gradient adjusts the characteristic particle signatures in the drift-resonance theory, which indicates a coupling effect between the magnetotail and the radiation belt and helps to better understand the wave-particle interaction in the magnetosphere.
ULF Wave‐Induced Ion Pitch Angle Evolution in the Dayside Outer Magnetosphere

Abstract:Drift‐bounce resonance between ultralow frequency (ULF) waves and ions is essential for ion energization in the magnetosphere. Here, we present the first comprehensive study of drift‐bounce resonance in the dayside outer magnetosphere, where off‐equatorial magnetic field minima would strongly distort ions' bounce and drift motion. A generalized theory is proposed, in which the effects of off‐equatorial minima, time‐evolving fields and ion bounce motion are taken into account. In consequence of these effects, ion pitch angle distributions undergo dramatic changes. In the presence of off‐equatorial minima, the time‐of‐flight effect of ion bounce motion forms latitude‐dependent dispersions besides “paw‐track shaped” structures, while evolving wave fields cause time‐dependent phase shifts in “paw‐tracks.” All the predicted signatures have been confirmed by 5 years of Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft data and numerical simulations. These results allow us to better understand the interactions between ULF waves and thermal ion species in global magnetospheric dynamics. Ultralow frequency (ULF) waves are widely distributed magnetospheric waves that can efficiently accelerate particles and play important roles in geomagnetic activities. Various patterns of ULF wave‐particle interactions have been investigated in detail near the Earth. However, near the dayside boundary of the magnetosphere, the geomagnetic field changes slightly due to solar wind compression. Consequently, the interaction between ULF waves and particles is modified in this region. This study analyzes how the pattern of ULF wave‐particle interactions varies near the dayside boundary of the magnetosphere. We find the compression of the magnetic field, particle motion and ULF wave evolution change the observational signatures of ULF wave‐particle interactions in the region of interest. The results help us better understand the energy transport from the solar wind to the magnetosphere and the role of ULF waves in magnetospheric dynamics. Field‐Aligned Structures of the Poloidal‐Mode ULF Wave Electric Field: Phase Relationship Implications

Abstract:Spacecraft observations within recent decades have demonstrated that ultralow frequency (ULF) waves play an important role in the dynamics of Earth's magnetosphere through drift and/or drift-bounce resonance with different particle species. The phase relationship between resonant particles and waves can help us understand the wave-particle interacting processes. It has been revealed that the phase relationship between the drift resonant particles and the fundamental poloidal-mode electric field is a signature to judge the energy transfer direction between particles and waves, and the local phase space density gradient. Here we explore whether there are other physical meanings of the phase relationship for drift-bounce resonant particles in addition to the similar ones as drift resonant particles. In this study, we find that (1) under different field-aligned structures, the poloidal-mode electric fields will show different phase relationship with drift-bounce resonant particles at the magnetic equator. It indicates that the phase relationship can be used to diagnose the parallel morphologies of ULF wave electric field. (2) If particle's phase space density variations caused by resonance effect become more dominant while compared with the nonresonant effect, the phase difference becomes much closer to inphase or antiphase. (3) When wave's parallel morphology is given, the phase relationship can be used to judge the energy transfer direction between waves and particles. These findings can provide new sights into exploring ULF waves' propagation and distribution along magnetic field lines and studying their interaction with charged particles in the magnetosphere.
The Evolutions of the Seed and Relativistic Electrons in the Earth's Outer Radiation Belt during the Geomagnetic Storms: A Statistical Study

Abstract:Using the Van Allen Probes data, we statistically study the evolutions of the seed and relativistic electrons in the Earth's outer radiation belt during the storms. Based on the different storm intensities and durations of the main phase, the storm events are divided into "moderate and short events (MS)", "moderate and long events (ML)", "strong and short events (SS)", and "strong and long events (SL)". The results from a superposed epoch analysis show that (1) For most MS and SS events, the seed electron fluxes can exceed pre‐storm levels, and enhanced fluxes mainly occur around the storm peak. (2) For the ML and SL events, the seed electron fluxes greatly exceed pre‐storm levels by more than an order of magnitude, and enhanced fluxes mainly occur during the main phase. (3) For most MS events, MeV electron fluxes are difficult to return to or exceed pre‐storm levels. While MeV electron fluxes at some L* shells for some SS events can exceed pre‐storm levels. (4) For most ML or SL events, MeV electron fluxes at L* ≥ 4.0 or ≥ 3.5 can exceed pre‐storm levels, and enhanced fluxes mainly start to occur from the main phase. These results suggest that the duration of the main phase and storm intensity play important roles in the evolutions of the seed and MeV electrons in the Earth's outer radiation belt during the storms. Abstract:One of the most important issues in space physics is to identify the dominant processes that transfer energy from the solar wind to energetic particle populations in Earth’s inner magnetosphere. Ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves are an important consideration as they propagate electromagnetic energy over vast distances with little dissipation and interact with charged particles via drift resonance and drift-bounce resonance. ULF waves also take part in magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling and thus play an essential role in regulating energy flow throughout the entire system. This review summarizes recent advances in the characterization of ULF Pc3-5 waves in different regions of the magnetosphere, including ion and electron acceleration associated with these waves.
