Abstract:Zn metal has received immense interest as a promising anode of rechargeable aqueous batteries for grid-scale energy storage. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable dendrite growth and surface parasitic reactions greatly retard its practical implementation. Herein, we demonstrate a seamless and multifunctional metal-organic framework (MOF) interphase for building corrosion-free and dendrite-free Zn anodes. The on-site coordinated MOF interphase with 3D open framework structure could function as a highly zincophilic mediator and ion sifter that synergistically induces fast and uniform Zn nucleation/deposition. In addition, the surface corrosion and hydrogen evolution are significantly suppressed by the interface shielding of the seamless interphase. An ultrastable Zn plating/stripping is achieved with elevated Coulombic efficiency of 99.2% over 1000 cycles and prolonged lifetime of 1100 h at 10 mA cm-2 with a high cumulative plated capacity of 5.5 Ah cm-2. Moreover, the modified Zn anode assures the MnO2-based full cells with superior rate and cycling performance.

Abstract:AbstractSelf‐healing and flexibility are significant for many emerging applications of secondary batteries, which have attracted broad attention. Herein, a self‐healing flexible quasi‐solid Zn‐ion battery composing of flexible all‐in‐one cathode (VS2 nanosheets growing on carbon cloth) and anode (electrochemically deposited Zn nanowires), and a self‐healing hydrogel electrolyte, is presented. The free‐standing all‐in‐one electrodes enable a high capacity and robust structure during flexible transformation of the battery, and the hydrogel electrolyte possesses a good self‐healing performance. The presented battery remains as a high retention potential even after healing from being cut into six pieces. When bending at 60°, 90°, and 180°, the battery capacities remain 124, 125, and 114 mAh g−1, respectively, cycling at a current density of 50 mA g−1. Moreover, after cutting and healing twice, the battery still delivers a stable capacity, indicating a potential use of self‐healing and wearable electronics.
High Voltage, Toughness and Improved Interfacial Ion Deposition Through a Dual-Crosslinked and Self-Healable Hydrogel Electrolyte for Green Zinc-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The inconsistent zinc stripping/deposition leading to low durability of zinc anodes is a fundamental obstacle for the practical application of zinc-based aqueous batteries. Hence, the self-healing capability of flexible batteries is crucial for enhancing their durability and dependability during routine operation, as it allows them to withstand various deformations. Through composite strengthening and dynamic coordination complexation, we have developed a dual-crosslinked and natural polymer-based self-healing hydrogel electrolyte (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/sodium alginate-Zn2+, denoted as CMC/SA-Zn2+) for flexible Zn-MnO2 batteries. The metal coordination interactions of carboxyl groups with Zn2+ as the dynamic motif are contributed to excellent mechanical and electrochemical properties, as well as fast self-healing ability for the CMC/SA-Zn2+ hydrogel electrolyte. Moreover, the improved compatibility of the electrode and electrolyte at their interfaces results in considerably more meticulous Zn deposition. Subsequently, a reversible plating/stripping performance is observed in a symmetric cell for a duration of 2000 h. After applying this self-healing and tough electrolyte to the flexible Zn-MnO2 battery, it is constructed with a high capacity of 218 mAh/g and a high coulombic efficiency close to 100 %. Additionally, the flexible batteries exhibit exceptional resilience and can recover their electrochemical performance even after enduring multiple mechanical damages, highlighting their potential use in wearable electronics.

Abstract:The poor stability of zinc anodes caused by uneven deposition/stripping of zinc has inevitably limited the practical application of zinc-based aqueous batteries (ZABs). And the self-healing property is very necessary for improved lifespan and reliability of the flexible batteries under various deformations during their daily usage. In this work, a new self-healable hydrogel electrolyte (SHE) with rigid-flexible backbones is synthesized by cross-linking polymerization and composite strengthening. Owing to porous crosslinking network and more hydrophilic groups, the SHE possesses high ionic conductivity (23.1 mS/cm at 25 °C) and excellent mechanical strength, and the hydrophilic groups are conductive to improve interfacial compatibility between electrode and electrolyte, prompting much more disciplined Zn metal plating/stripping. And the dynamic hydrogen bonds derived from the hydroxyl groups of the polymer backbone can prompt self-healing and stretchable property of SHEs. As a result, the assembled flexible zinc-manganese dioxide batteries delivered a high capacity of 304 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 and good cycling stability with a capacity retention of 83.1% (vs. 62.5% with polyacrylamide) after 1500 charge/discharge cycles at 5.0 A g−1. Furthermore, the flexible batteries with SHEs can recover electrochemical performance with over 95% healing efficiency after 5 cycles of complete breaking/healing.

Abstract:Self-healing solid-state aqueous rechargeable NiCo||Zn batteries are inherently safe and have a high energy density and mechanical robustness. However, the self-healability of solid-state batteries has only been realized by a few studies in which electron/ion-inactive self-healable substrates are utilized. This arises from the lack of self-healable electrolytes. Now an intrinsically self-healing battery has been designed that utilizes a new electrolyte that is intrinsically self-healable. Sodium polyacrylate hydrogel chains are crosslinked by ferric ions to promote dynamic reconstruction of an integral network. These non-covalent crosslinkers can form ionic bonds to reconnect damaged surfaces when the hydrogel is cut off, providing an ultimate solution to the intrinsic self-healability problem of batteries. As a result, this NiCo||Zn battery with this hydrogel electrolyte can be autonomically self-healed with over 87 % of capacity retained after 4 cycles of breaking/healing.
A Mechanically Durable and Device-Level Tough Zn-MnO2 Battery with High Flexibility

Abstract:Practical application of flexible energy storage devices has not been realized despite the booming of experimental researches. One major concern is their poor mechanical durability, which has seldom been investigated in literatures. On one hand, their flexibility is not good enough to accommodate arbitrary deformations, which was merely demonstrated by statically bending at certain angles. Thus, stability against dynamic mechanical stimuli is highly desired. On the other hand, these devices are not strong enough to endure severe mechanical stimuli including large shear forces and impacts, which greatly limits their practicability. Therefore, device-level toughness to ensure long-term usability is also needed. Here, a mechanically durable Zn-MnO2 battery is developed based on a dual-crosslinked hydrogel electrolyte without the usage of separator. Due to the effective energy dissipation of the hydrogel, the as-fabricated battery maintains a stable energy output when being dynamically deformed under severe mechanical stimuli. It can be vastly deformed into various shapes without electrochemical performance decay, showing excellent flexibility. It also exhibits super toughness that can endure two days' treading pressure and survive 20 times of random run-over by cars on road. These demonstrations reveal its outstanding mechanical stability and durability, suggesting great potential in truly flexible and wearable applications.

Abstract:Solid-state and flexible zinc carbon (or Leclanche) batteries are fabricated using a combination of functional nanostructured materials for optimum performance. Flexible carbon nanofiber mats obtained by electrospinning are used as a current collector and cathode support for the batteries. The cathode layer consists of manganese oxide particles combined with single-walled carbon nanotubes for improved conductivity. A polyethylene oxide layer containing titanium oxide nanoparticles forms the electrolyte layer, and a thin zinc foil is used as the anode. The battery is shown to retain its performance under mechanically stressed conditions. The results show that the above configuration can achieve solid-state mechanical flexibility and increased shelf life with little sacrifice in performance.

Abstract:Silver-zinc (Ag-Zn) fibrous batteries are considered as a promising power source for next-generation flexible/wearable electronics because of their superior safety, high energy density, and stable output voltage. Nevertheless, the widespread application of Ag-Zn batteries is hindered by their limited cycle life, primarily caused by Zn dendrite growth and Ag migration. Herein, we develop a flexible mild Ag-Zn fibrous battery with outstanding cycle performance via designing a bifunctional gel electrolyte. The graphene oxide (GO) introduced into the electrolyte provides dual enhancement in suppressing the growth of Zn dendrite and migration of Ag, leading to improved structural integrity and long cycle life. The designed fibrous battery demonstrates a high capacity of 0.85 mAh cm −1 and it can retain 90% (77.4%) of the initial capacity after 250 cycles under current density of 0.5 (5) mA cm −1 . Additionally, the battery can maintain its performance under various deformations and a four-battery set is employed as the power source for LED patterns and wearable sensors. This work provides a rational way to design advanced gel electrolytes for high-performance flexible batteries.

Abstract:Flexible lithium-ion batteries are critical for the next-generation electronics. However, during the practical application, they may break under deformations such as twisting and cutting, causing their failure to work or even serious safety problems. A new family of all-solid-state and flexible aqueous lithium ion batteries that can self-heal after breaking has been created by designing aligned carbon nanotube sheets loaded with LiMn2O4 and LiTi2(PO4)(3) nanoparticles on a self-healing polymer substrate as electrodes, and a new kind of lithium sulfate/sodium carboxymethylcellulose serves as both gel electrolyte and separator. The specific capacity, rate capability, and cycling performance can be well maintained after repeated cutting and self-healing. These self-healing batteries are demonstrated to be promising for wearable devices.

Abstract:Quasi-solid-state gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) can overcome the limitations of aqueous electrolytes and offer unparalleled adaptability which is critical to flexible aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) for wearable electronics. However, the notorious Zn dendrites and inevitable interface delamination between electrodes and GPEs under mechanical deformation cause serious capacity fading or failure in AZIBs. Herein, highly adherable, strong, and self-healable GPEs constructed with physically crosslinked dopamine grafted sodium alginate and hydrophobic association network are designed to suppress Zn dendrite formation, reduce interfacial detachment, and maintain the electrochemical performance of flexible AZIBs during serious mechanical manipulations. The resulting GPE demonstrates outstanding attributes including high mechanical strength (382 kPa), good interfacial adhesion (80 kPa), exceptional ionic conductivity (32.3 mS cm−1), and desired self-healing efficiency (72.4% after 5th breaking-healing cycle). Consequently, the assembled Zn//Zn cells achieve an improved cycling lifespan of over 2000 h at 2.0 mA cm−2. The assembled Zn//MnO2 batteries exhibit a high specific capacity of 290 mA h g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and ultrahigh capacity retention of 91% after 4000 cycles at 4 A g−1. Moreover, these flexible batteries maintain excellent performance under dynamic bending, twisting, and compressing, as well as remarkable reliability and self-healing ability, which are imperatively significant for practical applications.

Abstract:The requirement for rechargeable microbatteries (MBs) continues to increase due to the rapidly development of wearable and integrated electronics. However, the ever-reported mainstream MBs, such as lithium ion MBs, have intrinsic drawbacks of security threats and environmental hazards, and are not suitable as an energy supply component for wearable electronics. Here, a safe and environmentally friendly zinc ion microbattery (ZIMB) based on MXene-TiS2 (de)intercalation anode, multi-walled carbon nanotubes-vanadium dioxide (B) (MWCNTs-VO2 (B)) cathode, zinc sulfate-polyacrylamide (ZnSO4-PAM) hydrogel electrolyte and self-healable polyurethane (PU) protective shell is exploited. The ZIMB exhibit satisfactory electrochemical performance with a capacity of 40.8 μAh cm-2, maximum power density of 32.5 μWh cm-2 and maximum energy density of 1.2 mW cm-2. In addition, the ZIMB also exhibits the excellent flexibility, thermostability and self-healability, i.e., no significant attenuation in capacity can be observed when the ZIMB is placed on the specific conditions, such as the high bending angle of 150°, high temperature of 100 °C, and multiple damage and repair cycles. This study provides a feasible strategy to develop advanced high reliable and stable micro energy storage devices for wearable and integrated electronics.

Abstract:Multi‐healable, mechanically durable hydrogel electrolytes based on double cross‐linked polyacrylamide incorporated with hydrophobic interactions are fabricated and used for dendrite‐free and self‐healable aqueous zinc‐ion batteries. The hydrogel electrolytes present excellent performance and promising applications for wearable electronics. Flexible aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) are considered as one of the most promising energy storage candidates for wearable electronics, owing to their environmental friendliness, low cost, high safety, and high theoretical capacity. However, the practical application of flexible ZIBs is significantly impeded by the Zn dendrite growth and the poor mechanical endurability at the electrolyte–electrode interface. Mechanically durable hydrogel electrolyte with dendrite growth restriction and self‐healing ability is highly desirable to improve the durability and extend the lifetime of the flexible ZIBs. However, it is still a big challenge to simultaneously endow hydrogel electrolytes with all necessary properties. Herein, multi‐healable and mechanically durable hydrogels are fabricated by the synergy effect of strong chemical cross‐linking and dynamic physical hydrophobic associations. The obtained double cross‐linked polyacrylamide electrolyte (PAAm‐O‐B) has good tensile strain, strength, and stable electrochemical performance, with tensile strength up to 75 kPa, high self‐healing efficiency up to 50 broken‐healed cycles and lifespan up to 900 h dendrite inhibition behavior. The flexible Zn//MnO2 batteries using PAAm‐O‐B hydrogel electrolytes exhibit good mechanical durability with high specific capacity and long cycle lifespan even under 1000 bending deformations and superior self‐healing ability.

Abstract:Silver‐zinc (Ag‐Zn) batteries are a promising battery system for flexible electronics owing to their high safety, high energy density and stable output voltage. However, poor cycling performance, low areal capacity, and inferior flexibility limit the practical application of Ag‐Zn batteries. Herein, we develop a flexible quasi‐solid‐state Ag‐Zn battery system with superior performance by using mild electrolyte and binder‐free electrodes. Copper foam current collector is introduced to impede the growth of Zn dendrite, and the structure of Ag cathode is engineered by electrodeposition and chloridization process to improve the areal capacity. This novel battery demonstrates a remarkable cycle retention of 90% for 200 cycles at 3 mA/cm2. More importantly, this binder‐free battery can afford a high capacity of 3.5 mAh/cm2 at 3 mA/cm2, an outstanding power density of 2.42 mW/cm2, and a maximum energy density of 3.4 mWh/cm2. An energy management circuit is adopted to boost the output voltage of a single battery, which can power electronic ink display and Bluetooth temperature and humidity sensor. The developed battery can even operate under the extreme conditions, such as being bent and sealed in solid ice. This work offers a path for designing electrodes and electrolyte towards high‐performance flexible Ag‐Zn batteries.

Ultra-Durable and Flexible Fibrous Mild Quasi-Solid-State Ag-Zn Battery with Na2SO4 Electrolyte Additive

Abstract:Silver-zinc (Ag-Zn) batteries are regarded as a favorable power source for flexible and wearable electronics due to their high safety, high energy density, and steady output voltage. However, the weak flexibility and meager cycle performance significantly limit the practical use of Ag-Zn batteries. In this work, we propose a novel flexible fibrous quasi-solid-state mild Ag-Zn battery with superb cyclic performance by using a mild electrolyte and highly flexible binder-free electrodes. Carbon nanotube fiber is acted as the current collector to improve the flexibility of flexible Ag-Zn cells. The mild electrolyte containing ZnCl2 and Na2SO4 not only prevents the dissolution of silver ions but also impedes the heterogeneous growth of Zn dendrites. With 1500 cycles at 1 A/g, the fibrous quasi-solid-state mild Ag-Zn battery delivers a remarkable cyclic retention of 93.1%. Moreover, this novel flexible quasi-solid-state mild Ag-Zn battery can deliver a high capacity of 103.51 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g. The fibrous quasi-solid-state mild Ag-Zn battery demonstrates remarkable flexibility and excellent bending ability (after 600 bending cycles with capacity retention of 89%). This pioneering work sheds light on the establishment of high-performance quasi-solid-state mild Ag-Zn batteries for burgeoning wearable electronics.

Abstract:We demonstrate a rechargeable zinc-ion battery with high energy density and cyclability using MnO2 and reduced graphene oxide (MnO2/rGO) electrode. The flexible and binder free electrode, with high MnO2 mass ratio (80 wt% of MnO2), is fabricated using vacuum filtration without any additional additives other than rGO. Compared to batteries with conventional MnO2 electrodes, the Zn–MnO2/rGO battery shows a significant enhanced capacity (332.2 mAh g-1 at 0.3 A g-1), improved rate capability (172.3 mAh g-1 at 6 A g-1) and cyclability. The capacity retention remains 96% after 500 charge/discharge cycles at 6 A g-1. The high MnO2 mass ratio makes MnO2/rGO electrode advantageous when the capacity is normalized to the whole electrode, particularly at high rates. The calculated gravimetric energy density of Zn–MnO2/rGO battery is 33.17 W h kg-1, which is comparable to the existing commercial lead-acid batteries (30–40 W h kg-1). Furthermore, the discharge profile and capacity of our Zn–MnO2/rGO battery shows no deterioration during bending test, indicating good flexibility. As a result, zinc-ion battery is believed to be a promising technology for powering next generation flexible electronics.
