Abstract:Generalizing the proof -- by Hecht and Schmid -- of Osborne's conjecture we prove an Archimedean (and weaker) version of a theorem of Colette Moeglin. The result we obtain is a precise Archimedean version of the general principle -- stated by the second author -- according to which {\it a local Arthur packet contains the corresponding local $L$-packet and representations which are more tempered.}

Abstract:We give an explicit construction of Arthur packets for real unitary groups by cohomological and parabolic induction and following an idea communicated to us by P. Trapa, we show that they satisfy the multiplicity one property. In particular, we show the irreducibility of some parabolically induced representations for unitary groups, and use this to give the proof of analogous statements made in our work on Arthur packets of classical groups. Nous donnons une construction explicite des paquets d'Arthur des groupes unitaires réels par induction cohomologique et induction parabolique et en suivant une idée communiquée par P. Trapa, nous établissons la propriété de multiplicité un de ceux-ci. Nous montrons en particulier des résultats d'irréductibilité de certaines induites paraboliques pour les groupes unitaires, ce qui nous permet de compléter les démonstrations d'énoncés analogues annoncés dans nos travaux sur les paquets d'Arthur des groupes classiques.

Abstract:The aim of this work, is to describe fairly explicitly a general Arthur's packet for a classical group. The problem to be solved, here, is the decompostion of induced representations. Following previous work on general linear group, such a description implies the needed transfer for the representations in Arthur's packet.

Abstract:In this paper, following Arthur's ideas, we rework the process of constructing the anti-tempered local Arthur packets for quasi-split classical groups and their pure inner forms. In particular, we present explicit examples illustrating certain gap in a consequential lemma of Arthur and provide a uniform modification, based on the work of Moeglin, Waldspurger, and Xu.

Abstract:For metaplectic groups over a local field of characteristic zero, we define the Arthur packet attached to any Arthur parameter $\psi$ as a multi-set of unitary genuine irreducible representations, characterized by endoscopic character relations. Over number fields, we obtain a multiplicity formula for the genuine discrete $L^2$-automorphic spectrum in terms of global Arthur parameters and $\epsilon$-factors, by leveraging the trace formula for metaplectic groups. This confirms a conjecture of Gan, and extends earlier results of Gan-Ichino on the Shimura-Waldspurger correspondences, whereas their works play a critical role in our proof. Furthermore, all these are shown to be compatible with existing results in rank one (Waldspurger) and two (Gan-Ichino).

On Arthur's unitarity conjecture for split real groups

Abstract:Arthur's conjectures predict the existence of some very interesting unitary representations occurring in spaces of automorphic forms. We prove the unitarity of the "Langlands element" (i.e., the one specified by Arthur) of all unipotent Arthur packets for split real groups. The proof uses Eisenstein series, Langlands' constant term formula and square integrability criterion, analytic properties of intertwining operators, and some mild arithmetic input from the theory of Dirichlet L-functions, to reduce to a more combinatorial problem about intertwining operators.

Abstract:In this article we propose a geometric description of Arthur packets for p-adic groups using vanishing cycles of perverse sheaves. Our approach is inspired by the 1992 book by Adams, Barbasch and Vogan on the Langlands classification of admissible representations of real groups and follows the direction indicated by Vogan in his 1993 paper on the Langlands correspondence. Using vanishing cycles, we introduce and study a functor from the category of equivariant perverse sheaves on the moduli space of certain Langlands parameters to local systems on the regular part of the conormal bundle for this variety. In this article we establish the main properties of this functor and show that it plays the role of microlocalization in the work of Adams, Barbasch and Vogan. We use this to define ABV-packets for pure rational forms of p-adic groups and propose a geometric description of the transfer coefficients that appear in Arthur's main local result in the endoscopic classification of representations. This article includes conjectures modelled on Vogan's work, especially the prediction that Arthur packets are ABV-packets for p-adic groups. We gather evidence for these conjectures by verifying them in numerous examples.

Abstract:Arthur has conjectured the existence of what are now known as Arthur packets of representations of reductive algebraic groups over local and global fields. In the case of classical groups he subsequently gave a definition of these packets, using local and global methods. For general real groups, an alternative approach to the definition of Arthur packets has been given by Adams-Barbasch-Vogan. This construction is purely local and uses geometric methods. Our main result is that these two definitions agree in the case of real classical groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the closure ordering conjecture on the local $L$-parameters of representations in local Arthur packets of $\mathrm{G}_n=\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}, \mathrm{SO}_{2n+1}$ over a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic zero. Precisely, given any representation $\pi$ in a local Arthur packet $\Pi_{\psi}$, the closure of the local $L$-parameter of $\pi$ in the Vogan variety must contain the local $L$-parameter corresponding to $\psi$. This conjecture reveals a geometric nature of local Arthur packets and is inspired by the work of Adams, Barbasch, and Vogan, and the work of Cunningham, Fiori, Moussaoui, Mracek, and Xu, on ABV-packets. As an application, for general quasi-split connected reductive groups, we show that the closure ordering conjecture implies the enhanced Shahidi conjecture, under certain reasonable assumptions. This provides a framework towards the enhanced Shahidi conjecture in general. We verify these assumptions for $\mathrm{G}_n$, hence give a new proof of the enhanced Shahidi conjecture. At last, we show that local Arthur packets cannot be fully contained in other ones, which is in contrast to the situation over Archimedean local fields and has its own interests.

Abstract:Mok and Moeglin-Renard have defined Arthur packets for unitary groups. Their definitions follow Arthur's work on classical groups and rely on harmonic analysis. For real groups there is an alternative definition of Arthur packets due to Adams-Barbasch-Vogan. It relies on sheaf-theoretic techniques instead of harmonic analysis. We prove that these two definitions of Arthur packets are equivalent in the case of real unitary groups.

Abstract:In this two-part series of articles, we present a new proof comparing the trace formula for a general linear group with that of one of its inner forms. Our methodology relies on the trace formula for Lie algebras, incorporating the notion of non-invariant transfer of test functions. In the appendix A, we provide a description of conjugacy classes of an inner form of a general linear group. In the appendix B, we provide explicit computations of Haar measures. This article focuses on the geometric side of the trace formula.

Abstract:Arthur packets have been defined for pure real forms of symplectic and special orthogonal groups following two different approaches. The first approach, due to Arthur, Moeglin and Renard uses harmonic analysis. The second approach, due to Adams, Barbasch and Vogan uses microlocal geometry. We prove that the two approaches produce essentially equivalent Arthur packets. This extends previous work of the authors and J. Adams for the quasisplit real forms.

Abstract:We state a conjecture, local Langlands in families, connecting the centre of the category of smooth representations on $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{q}^{-1}]$-modules of a quasi-split $p$-adic group $\mathrm{G}$ (where $q$ is the cardinality of the residue field of the underlying local field), the ring of global functions on the stack of Langlands parameters for $\mathrm{G}$ over $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{q}^{-1}]$, and the endomorphisms of a Gelfand-Graev representation for $\mathrm{G}$. For a class of classical $p$-adic groups (symplectic, unitary, or split odd special orthogonal groups), we prove this conjecture after inverting an integer depending only on $\mathrm{G}$. Along the way, we show that the local Langlands correspondence for classical $p$-adic groups (1) preserves integrality of $\ell$-adic representations; (2) satisfies an "extended" (generic) packet conjecture; (3) is compatible with parabolic induction up to semisimplification (generalizing a result of Moussaoui), hence induces a semisimple local Langlands correspondence; and (4) the semisimple correspondence is compatible with automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$ fixing $\sqrt{q}$.

Abstract:In this paper, for symplectic and split odd special orthogonal groups, we develop an account of theory on the intersection problem of local Arthur packets. Specifically, following Atobe's reformulation on Mœglin's construction of local Arthur packets, we give a complete set of operators on the construction data, based on which, we provide algorithms and Sage codes to determine whether a given representation is of Arthur type. Furthermore, for any representation $\pi$ of Arthur type, we give a precise formula for the set $$ \Psi(\pi)=\{ \text{local Arthur parameter }\psi \ | \ \text{the local Arthur packet } \Pi_{\psi} \text{ contains } \pi\}.$$

Abstract:Recently, motivated by the theory of real local Arthur packets, making use of the wavefront sets of representations over non-Archimedean local fields $F$, Ciubotaru, Mason-Brown, and Okada defined the weak local Arthur packets consisting of certain unipotent representations and conjectured that they are unions of local Arthur packets. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for split classical groups with the assumption of the residue field characteristic of $F$ being large. In particular, this implies the unitarity of these unipotent representations. We also discuss the generalization of the weak local Arthur packets beyond unipotent representations which reveals the implications of a conjecture of Jiang on the structure of wavefront sets for representations in local Arthur packets.

Abstract:For $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over a $p$-adic field, Cunningham and Ray proved Vogan's conjecture, that is, local Arthur packets are the same as ABV packets. They used the endoscopic theory to reduce the general case to a combinatorial lemma for irreducible local Arthur parameters, and their proof implies that one can also prove Vogan's conjecture for $p$-adic $\mathrm{GL}_n$ by proving a generalized version of this combinatorial lemma. Riddlesden recently proved this generalized lemma. In this paper, we give a new proof of it, which has its own interest.

Abstract:Finite étale covers of a connected scheme $X$ are parametrised by the étale fundamental group via the monodromy correspondence. This was generalised to an exodromy correspondence for constructible sheaves, first in the topological setting by MacPherson, Treumann, Lurie, and others, and recently also for étale and pro-étale sheaves by Barwick--Glasman--Haine and Wolf. The proof of the étale exodromy theorem is long and technical, using many new definitions and constructions in the $(\infty,2)$-category of $\infty$-topoi. This paper gives a quick proof of the étale exodromy theorem for constructible sheaves of sets (with respect to a fixed stratification), in the style of Grothendieck's Galois theory.
