Abstract:ChatGPT is a variant of the generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) language model that uses large amounts of text-based training data and a transformer architecture to generate human-like text adjusted to the received prompts. ChatGPT presents several advantages in forensic sciences, namely, constituting a virtual assistant to aid lawyers, judges, and victims in managing and interpreting forensic expert data. But what would happen if ChatGPT began to be used to produce forensic expertise reports? Despite its potential applications, the use of ChatGPT and other Large Language Models and artificial intelligence tools in forensic writing also poses ethical and legal concerns, which are discussed in this perspective together with some expected future perspectives.

Abstract:In recent years, advancements in the field of artificial intelligence have increased exponentially, culminating in widely available user-based tools such as ChatGPT. Although fairly new, these tools have as of yet been underutilized by the scientific community, including climatology. As a large language model, ChatGPT’s strong ability to accurately respond to prompts allows it to be used as a comprehensive tool with a variety of applications in climatology, which this article groups into practical and conceptual applications. Practically, ChatGPT excels in the assistance of code creation and troubleshooting, allowing for efficient automation of data collection, as well as the process of basic data sorting. Conceptually, the tool gives a foundation for researchers to “fill the knowledge gap” by gaining a basic understanding of supplementary information presented in the literature review portion of a research project. While ChatGPT is powerful, it contains significant limitations that hinder its status as a standalone tool, such as occasional inaccurate responses, lack of transparency, and absence of data protection. Despite these setbacks, use of ChatGPT in a responsible and ethical manner with awareness of its limitations can be efficient, dynamic, and adherent to the principles of scientific integrity.

Abstract:In the current hype-laden climate surrounding the rapid proliferation of foundation models and generative AI systems like ChatGPT, it is becoming increasingly important for societal stakeholders to reach sound understandings of their limitations and potential transformative effects. This is especially true in the natural and applied sciences, where magical thinking among some scientists about the take-off of “artificial general intelligence” has arisen simultaneously as the growing use of these technologies is putting longstanding norms, policies, and standards of good research practice under pressure. In this analysis, I argue that a deflationary understanding of foundation models and generative AI systems can help us sense check our expectations of what role they can play in processes of scientific exploration, sense-making, and discovery. I claim that a more sober, tool-based understanding of generative AI systems as computational instruments embedded in warm-blooded research processes can serve several salutary functions. It can play a crucial bubble-bursting role that mitigates some of the most serious threats to the ethos of modern science posed by an unreflective overreliance on these technologies. It can also strengthen the epistemic and normative footing of contemporary science by helping researchers circumscribe the part to be played by machine-led prediction in communicative contexts of scientific discovery while concurrently prodding them to recognise that such contexts are principal sites for human empowerment, democratic agency, and creativity. Finally, it can help spur ever richer approaches to collaborative experimental design, theory-construction, and scientific world-making by encouraging researchers to deploy these kinds of computational tools to heuristically probe unbounded search spaces and patterns in high-dimensional biophysical data that would otherwise be inaccessible to human-scale examination and inference.
Delving into the Utilisation of ChatGPT in Scientific Publications in Astronomy

Abstract:Rapid progress in the capabilities of machine learning approaches in natural language processing has culminated in the rise of large language models over the last two years. Recent works have shown unprecedented adoption of these for academic writing, especially in some fields, but their pervasiveness in astronomy has not been studied sufficiently. To remedy this, we extract words that ChatGPT uses more often than humans when generating academic text and search a total of 1 million articles for them. This way, we assess the frequency of word occurrence in published works in astronomy tracked by the NASA Astrophysics Data System since 2000. We then perform a statistical analysis of the occurrences. We identify a list of words favoured by ChatGPT and find a statistically significant increase for these words against a control group in 2024, which matches the trend in other disciplines. These results suggest a widespread adoption of these models in the writing of astronomy papers. We encourage organisations, publishers, and researchers to work together to identify ethical and pragmatic guidelines to maximise the benefits of these systems while maintaining scientific rigour.

Abstract:Introduction: the JLE editors analyse the scope and depth of the subject area of ChatGPT and related topics based on the Scopus database. The Scopus statistics prove a skyrocketing rise in the number of publications in the field in question during 2023. The major alarming themes cover authorship and integrity related to AI-assisted writing, threats to educational practices, medicine, and malevolent uses of ChatGPT. Keywords Explained: the key terminology is defined, including generative pre-trained transformers (GPT); ChatGPT; artificial intelligence (AI); AI chatbots; natural language processing (NLP); large language models; Open AI; large language model (LLM). International Research on ChatGPT: as of September 24 2023, the Scopus database has indexed 1,935 publications, with “ChatGPT” in the title, abstract, or keywords. A skyrocketing rise in the number of research has been reported since the early days of 2023. 1,925 indexed publications out of 1,935 were published in 2023. Most of them came from the USA, India, the UK, and China. The number of documents indexed in the Scopus database as well as PubMed, arXiv and others are exponentially rising. ChatGPT in Education: the academic community has been actively discussing the challenges education will face in the era of ChatGPT in the context of the fundamental threats posed to the educational system. The latter include assessment procedures, information accuracy, and skill devaluation. As many complex technologies, generative pre-trained transformers are ambivalent in nature, providing a great potential for learning and education at large, including new approaches based on critical thinking and awareness of the pros and cons of AI. ChatGPT in Science: great prospects for text generation and improvements in language quality adjoin to dubious authorship and potentially inconsistent and erroneous parts in the AI-produced texts. Publishers and journals are working out new publishing policies, including publishing ethics towards AI-assisted or AI-improved submissions. Conclusion: JLE is planning to revise its editorial policy to address the new challenges from AI technologies. JLE editors welcome new submissions of research articles and reviews as well as special issues on ChatGPT and related themes, with potential applications of chatbots in education, innovative approaches to writing assignments, facilitating personalized learning, academic integrity issues related to AI-supported writing, etc. in focus.

Abstract:ChatGPT is an AI-based text generating tool which was released at the end of 2022. The tool is significantly better than previous AIs at generating written outputs which appear to have been written by a human including academic research articles. Within academic research there has been considerable interest in whether the tool can be used to write scholarly content, and what the consequences of this would be. Despite the increased quality of output ChatGPT still suffers from many of the flaws which plague other AI tools such as bias, inaccurate training materials and its use leads to concerns around plagiarism and research integrity. This article centres the viewpoint of an academic librarian to discuss ChatGPT in the context of other technologies which have been disruptive. An argument is made that the tool is simply one in a series of transformational developments in scholarly communications, which have all been, eventually, successfully assimilated. ChatGPT can be used in a variety of ways to aid climate research, including in model parameterization, data analysis and interpretation, scenario generation, and model evaluation. This technology provides researchers and policy-makers with a powerful tool for generating and analyzing different climate scenarios based on a wide range of data inputs, and for improving the accuracy of climate projections. Abstract:A few colleagues and I amused ourselves at a previous IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC) with having ChatGPT try to handle all sorts of things, including a failed attempt at having it find Laypunov functions. ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence (AI) models have, in a remarkably short period of time, gone from vague curiosities to ever-present topics of conversation at faculty meetings, conference organizing committees, and op-ed pages. At that particular CDC-gathering, I was lamenting the fact that it was hard to think of enough topics to cover in the Presidents Message column for the IEEE Control Systems Magazine. So why not have ChatGPT write the column?

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) large language models (LLMs) have emerged as important technologies. Recently, ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) has been released and attracted massive interest from the public, owing to its unique capabilities to simplify many daily tasks of people from diverse backgrounds and social statuses. Here, we discuss how ChatGPT (and similar AI technologies) can impact biology and environmental science, providing examples obtained through interactive sessions with ChatGPT. The benefits that ChatGPT offers are ample and can impact many aspects of biology and environmental science, including education, research, scientific publishing, outreach, and societal translation. Among others, ChatGPT can simplify and expedite highly complex and challenging tasks. As an example to illustrate this, we provide 100 important questions for biology and 100 important questions for environmental science. Although ChatGPT offers a plethora of benefits, there are several risks and potential harms associated with its use, which we analyze herein. Awareness of risks and potential harms should be raised. However, understanding and overcoming the current limitations could lead these recent technological advances to push biology and environmental science to their limits.

Abstract:This paper aims at a brief overview of the main impact of ChatGTP in the scientific field of programming and learning/education in computer science. How generative artificial intelligence portrays science: Interviewing ChatGPT from the perspective of different audience segments

Abstract:Generative artificial intelligence in general and ChatGPT in particular have risen in importance. ChatGPT is widely known and used increasingly as an information source for different topics, including science. It is therefore relevant to examine how ChatGPT portrays science and science-related issues. Research on this question is lacking, however. Hence, we simulate "interviews" with ChatGPT and reconstruct how it presents science, science communication, scientific misbehavior, and controversial scientific issues. Combining qualitative and quantitative content analysis, we find that, generally, ChatGPT portrays science largely as the STEM disciplines, in a positivist-empiricist way and a positive light. When comparing ChatGPT's responses to different simulated user profiles and responses from the GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 versions, we find similarities in that the scientific consensus on questions such as climate change, COVID-19 vaccinations, or astrology is consistently conveyed across them. Beyond these similarities in substance, however, pronounced differences are found in the personalization of responses to different user profiles and between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4.

Abstract:ChatGPT has become a very popular artificial intelligence tool recently, with the ability to “chat” with human beings. It can perform some challenging tasks such as writing essays, coding, composing, painting, etc. While the roles of ChatGPT in helping with literature reviews and language editing have been widely debated, the potential applications of ChatGPT in computational materials science have yet to be discussed. Herein, we will briefly discuss 3 aspects that ChatGPT could potentially be applied for computational materials science, i.e., building structures, writing codes for specific scientific software, and preparing data visualization scripts. It is found that while ChatGPT can make some simple mistakes when trying to accomplish general tasks, it has the ability to learn from our words when interacting with us. Meanwhile, we should also pay attention to some problems such as the consistency of the output, hidden errors, and ethical concerns. We hope that this perspective will spur further interest in the potential applications of ChatGPT in computational materials science.

Abstract:The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education can have a beneficial effect on learners' attitudes and self-assurance toward learning. However, it may also present a danger of substituting teachers and interpersonal interactions that are essential for learners' holistic development. This research investigated the use of AI, specifically the Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT), in education and whether it is an ally or a threat to teaching and learning. It discussed and elaborated how AI has changed the traditional practice, principles, culture, and theory in education. Moreover, it identified the advantages and disadvantages of using ChatGPT in education, potential paradigm shifts that may arise from its use, and its impact on science and mathematics education. Furthermore, this study presented an analysis of ChatGPT's responses to standardized marking schemes in science and mathematics and provided valuable insights into how AI can be integrated into the teaching and learning of science and mathematics. This study concluded that a review of the assessment approaches, as well as an openminded perspective in adapting the curriculum and pedagogies with the incorporation of AI, are needed to maximize the learning outcomes of 21st century learners.
