Abstract:We present a practical and effective method of planetary defense that allows for extremely short mitigation time scales if required as well as long time scale mitigation. This one system allows for virtually any required defense mode. In general, it uses much less launch mass with vastly short required response time than classical deflection techniques The method uses an array of small hypervelocity kinetic penetrators that pulverize and disassemble an asteroid or small comet. This approach will work in extended time scale modes where there is a large warning time, as well as in short interdiction time scenarios with intercepts of minutes to days before impact. In longer time intercept scenarios, the disassembled asteroid fragments largely miss the Earth. In short intercept scenarios, the asteroid fragments of maximum $\sim$10-meter diameter allow the Earth's atmosphere to act as a "beam dump" where the fragments burn up and/or air burst, with the primary channel of energy going into spatially and temporally de-correlated shock waves. The de-correlated blast waves are the key to why PI works so well. The effectiveness of the approach depends on the intercept time and size of the asteroid but allows for effective defense against asteroids in the 20-1000m diameter class and could virtually eliminate the threat of mass destruction posed by these threats with very short warning times, though longer warning is always preferred. A 20m diameter asteroid ($\sim$0.5Mt, similar to Chelyabinsk) can be mitigated with a 100s prior to impact intercept with a 10m/s disruption. With ~1m/s internal disruption, a 5 hours prior to impact intercept of a 50m diameter asteroid ($\sim$10Mt yield, similar to Tunguska), a 1 day prior to impact intercept of 100m diameter asteroid ($\sim$100Mt yield), a 20 day prior to impact intercept of Apophis ($\sim$370m diameter, $\sim$4Gt yield) mitigates these threats.

Abstract:The question of whether to attempt deflections during planetary defence emergencies has been subject to considerable decision-making analysis (Schmidt 2018; SMPAG Ad-Hoc Working Group on Legal Issues 2020). Hypothetical situations usually involve a newly discovered asteroid with a high impact probability on a set timescale. This paper addresses two further complexities: (1) limiting missions to an asteroid due to the risk of a human-caused Earth impact; and (2) active management of asteroids to place them in "safe harbours", even when impact risks are otherwise below "decision to act" thresholds. We use Apophis as a case study, and address the two complexities in turn.

Abstract:Although no known asteroid poses a threat to Earth for at least the next century, the catalogue of near-Earth asteroids is incomplete for objects whose impacts would produce regional devastation1,2. Several approaches have been proposed to potentially prevent an asteroid impact with Earth by deflecting or disrupting an asteroid1-3. A test of kinetic impact technology was identified as the highest-priority space mission related to asteroid mitigation1. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission is a full-scale test of kinetic impact technology. The mission's target asteroid was Dimorphos, the secondary member of the S-type binary near-Earth asteroid (65803) Didymos. This binary asteroid system was chosen to enable ground-based telescopes to quantify the asteroid deflection caused by the impact of the DART spacecraft4. Although past missions have utilized impactors to investigate the properties of small bodies5,6, those earlier missions were not intended to deflect their targets and did not achieve measurable deflections. Here we report the DART spacecraft's autonomous kinetic impact into Dimorphos and reconstruct the impact event, including the timeline leading to impact, the location and nature of the DART impact site, and the size and shape of Dimorphos. The successful impact of the DART spacecraft with Dimorphos and the resulting change in the orbit of Dimorphos7 demonstrates that kinetic impactor technology is a viable technique to potentially defend Earth if necessary.

Abstract:Abstract Asteroid impacts pose a major threat to all life on Earth. The age of the dinosaurs was abruptly ended by a 10-km-diameter asteroid. Currently, a nuclear device is the only means of deflecting large Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) away from an Earth-impacting trajectory. The Enhanced Kinetic Impactor (EKI) concept is proposed to deflect large PHAs via maneuvering space rocks. First, an unmanned spacecraft is launched to rendezvous with an intermediate Near-Earth Asteroid (NEA). Then, more than one hundred tons of rocks are collected from the NEA as the EKI. The NEA can also be captured as the EKI if the NEA is very small. Finally, the EKI is maneuvered to impact the PHA at a high speed, resulting in a significant deflection of the PHA. For example, to deflect Apophis, as much as 200 t of rocks could be collected from a NEA as the EKI based on existing engineering capabilities. The EKI can produce a velocity increment (∆ v ) of 39.81 mm/s in Apophis, thereby increasing the minimum geocentric distance during the close encounter in 2029 by 1,866.93 km. This mission can be completed in 3.96 years with a propellant cost of 2.98 t. Compared with a classic kinetic impactor, the deflection distance can be increased one order of magnitude. The EKI concept breaks through the limitation of the ground-based launch capability, which can significantly increase the mass of the impactor. We anticipate that our research will be a starting point for efficient planetary defense against large PHAs.

Evaluation of Effects of Kinetic Impact Deflection on Hazardous Asteroids

Abstract:The kinetic impact deflection would result in a number of unexpected hazardous fragments. For this reason, understanding the outcomes of impact is fundamental to assess the effects of this mitigation technique. The process of hyper-velocity impact of a small artificial aluminum projectile on an S-type asteroid is investigated with the material point method（MPM）. In order to evaluate the impact threat of the resulting fragments posed to the Earth, the impact outcomes are transferred to the heliocentric orbit of a hazardous asteroid. A parallel N-body code is applied to propagate the evolution of these fragments in the solar system. The impact hazard of the fragments on the Earth is analyzed and the role of asteroid interior structures is explored. The results show that the structure of the simulated body is partially destroyed by the kinetic impactor. Some of the resulting fragments move backward along the impact direction, enhancing the deflection efficiency. Furthermore, the collision outcomes proved to be very dependent on the internal structure of the asteroid. The fragments produced from the monolithic target are much smaller than those from the rubble-pile one, while the size and speed distribution of fragments in the former case is steeper and smaller. The hazard assessment implies that although the impact damage to the Earth is reduced from the deflection, there are still a number of small resulting fragments posing threat to the Earth. The expected damage caused by the deflected monolithic target is larger than the rubble-pile target because of the exist of numerous small dangerous fragments. The method presented in this study can be used to infer the impact condition and outcomes in future planetary defense missions.

Abstract:Directed energy for planetary defense is now a viable option and is superior in many ways to other proposed technologies, being able to defend the Earth against all known threats. This paper presents basic ideas behind a directed energy planetary defense system that utilizes laser ablation of an asteroid to impart a deflecting force on the target. A conceptual philosophy called DE-STAR, which stands for Directed Energy System for Targeting of Asteroids and exploRation, is an orbiting stand-off system, which has been described in other papers. This paper describes a smaller, stand-on system known as DE-STARLITE as a reduced-scale version of DE-STAR. Both share the same basic heritage of a directed energy array that heats the surface of the target to the point of high surface vapor pressure that causes significant mass ejection thus forming an ejection plume of material from the target that acts as a rocket to deflect the object. This is generally classified as laser ablation. DE-STARLITE uses conventional propellant for launch to LEO and then ion engines to propel the spacecraft from LEO to the near-Earth asteroid (NEA). During laser ablation, the asteroid itself provides the propellant source material; thus a very modest spacecraft can deflect an asteroid much larger than would be possible with a system of similar mission mass using ion beam deflection (IBD) or a gravity tractor. DE- STARLITE is capable of deflecting an Apophis-class (325 m diameter) asteroid with a 1- to 15-year targeting time (laser on time) depending on the system design. The mission fits within the rough mission parameters of the Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) program in terms of mass and size. DE-STARLITE also has much greater capability for planetary defense than current proposals and is readily scalable to match the threat. It can deflect all known threats with sufficient warning.

Abstract:We present a concept for a spacecraft that can controllably alter the trajectory of an Earth threatening asteroid using gravity as a towline. The spacecraft hovers near the asteroid with thrusters angled outward so the exhaust does not impinge on the surface. This deflection method is insensitive to the structure, surface properties, and rotation state of the asteroid.

Abstract:We present a series of numerical simulations using a shock physics smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code, investigating energetic impacts on small celestial bodies characterised by diverse internal structures, ranging from weak and homogeneous compositions to rubble-pile structures with varying boulder volume packing. Our findings reveal that the internal structure of these rubble-pile bodies significantly influences the impact outcomes. Specifically, we observe that the same impact energy can either catastrophically disrupt a target with a low boulder packing (<30 vol%), or result in the ejection of only a small fraction of material from a target with the same mass but high boulder packing (>40 vol%). This finding highlights the pivotal role played by the rubble-pile structure, effectively acting as a bulk shear strength, which governs the size and behaviour of the resulting impact. Consequently, understanding and characterising the internal structure of asteroids will be of paramount importance for any future efforts to deflect or disrupt an asteroid on a collision course with Earth.

Abstract:This work considers the trajectory optimization of a kinetic impactor spacecraft, which is sent to collide with a threatening near-Earth asteroid. It is assumed that Earth departure is done impulsively, by the upper stage of a launch vehicle, and is then followed by low-thrust electric propulsion until impact. For a given spacecraft, all of the important decision parameters, such as the date of departure, the direction of the hyperbolic departure, the thrust program, i.e. the history of the low-thrust pointing angles, and the date of impact are all chosen by the optimizer to maximize the perigee radius of the asteroid at its closest approach. Normally a trajectory optimization problem of this type would need to be described by many hundreds of decision parameters, e.g. if formulated to be solved by an optimization package (such as GPOPS) using nonlinear programming. We show that a successful and accurate optimization of the mission is possible using the heuristic method, particle swarm, and only 16 decision parameters, and present results for the deflection of 99942 Apophis at its 2029 close approach.

Abstract:Asteroidal impact threats to the Earth will be predicted a century or more in advance. Changing an asteroid's albedo changes the force of Solar radiation on it, and hence its orbit. Albedo may be changed by applying a thin ($\sim 0.1\,\mu$) reflective coat of alkali metal, dispensed as vapor by an orbiting spacecraft. A complete coat reduces the effective Solar gravity, changing the orbital period. A Tunguska-class (50 m diameter) asteroid in a nominal orbit with perihelion 1 AU and aphelion 3 AU ($a = 2\,$AU, $e = 0.5$) may be displaced along its path by $\sim 1000\,$km in 100 years, sufficient to avoid impact in a populated area, by application of one kg of lithium or sodium metal over its entire surface. Alternatively, coating one hemisphere of an asteroid in an elliptical orbit may produce a Solar radiation torque, analogous to but distinct from the Yarkovsky effect, displacing it by an Earth radius in $\sim 200$ years. The time required scales as the square root of the asteroid's diameter (the 1/6 power of its mass) because the displacement increases quadratically with time, making it possible to prevent the catastrophic impact of a km-sized asteroid with a minimal mass.

Abstract:Context: Potentially hazardous asteroids (PHA) in Earth-crossing orbits pose a constant threat to life on Earth. Several mitigation methods have been proposed, and the most feasible technique appears to be the disintegration of the impactor and the generation of a fragment cloud by explosive penetrators at interception. However, mitigation analyses tend to neglect the effect of orbital dynamics on the trajectory of fragments. Aims: We aim to study the effect of orbital dynamics of the impactor's cloud on the number of fragments that hit the Earth, assuming different interception dates. We investigate the effect of self-gravitational cohesion and the axial rotation of the impactor. Methods: We computed the orbits of 10^5 fragments with a high-precision direct N-body integrator of the eighth order, running on GPUs. We considered orbital perturbations from all large bodies in the Solar System and the self-gravity of the cloud fragments. Results: Using a series of numerical experiments, we show that orbital shear causes the fragment cloud to adopt the shape of a triaxial ellipsoid. The shape and alignment of the triaxial ellipsoid are strongly modulated by the cloud's orbital trajectory and, hence, the impact cross-section of the cloud with respect to the Earth. Therefore, the number of fragments hitting the Earth is strongly influenced by the orbit of the impactor and the time of interception. A minimum number of impacts occur for a well-defined orientation of the impactor rotational axis, depending on the date of interception. Conclusions: To minimise the lethal consequences of an PHA's impact, a well-constrained interception timing is necessary. A too-early interception may not be ideal for PHAs in the Apollo or Aten groups. Thus, we find that the best time to intercept PHA is when it is at the pericentre of its orbit.

Investigation of the Incremental Benefits of Eccentric Collisions in Kinetic Deflection of Potentially Hazardous Asteroids

Abstract:In asteroid momentum deflection missions, the presence of ejecta leads to a phenomenon where the system's momentum appears "amplified" after the impact. This paper makes use of this phenomenon and demonstrates through computational simulations that targeting a point off the geometric center of an asteroid can further enhance the collisional benefit after impact. Due to uncertainties in the attitude of the asteroid and the momentum transfer coefficient (beta, gamma ), this study employs a Monte Carlo approach to address these uncertainties. The results indicate that the strategy proposed in this paper can increase the post-collision deflection distance of the asteroid relative to Earth by an average of 81.05%, while also reducing the standard deviation by an order of magnitude, significantly lowering the uncertainty of the deflection mission. Furthermore, the results show that for certain asteroids particularly sensitive to changes in velocity Delta v , blindly targeting their geometric center could result in a 48% probability of reducing the minimum distance to Earth. However, the striking strategy developed in this study can avoid this negative outcome. Finally, based on the computational results, a statistical formula is derived to predict the relative gain of the two strategies, concluding that for asteroids with smaller semi-major axes alpha, and the interception angle a at impact is greater, the benefits of employing the approach discussed in this paper are greater.

Abstract:Asteroids have called the attention of researchers around the world. Its chemical and physical composition can give us important information about the formation of our Solar System. In addition, the hypothesis of mining some of these objects is considered, since they contain precious metals. However, some asteroids have their orbits close to the orbit of the Earth. These nearby objects can pose a danger to our life in the planet, since some of them are large enough to cause catastrophic damage to the Earth. We will pay attention to the theme of deflecting a potentially dangerous asteroid. There are currently two main forms of this deviation: i) the impact of an object at high velocity with the asteroid, which can be a space vehicle or a smaller asteroid; ii) the use of a gravitational "tractor", which consist in placing an object (another asteroid or part of an asteroid), close to the body that is approaching the Earth, such that this gravitational interference can deflect its trajectory. In this work, we will evaluate the influence of gravitational perturbations in the most commonly mentioned asteroid deflection model in the literature, the kinetic impact deflection technique. With the impact, it is intended to change the kinetic energy of the asteroid, changing its orbit enough so that it does not present risks of impacts with the Earth.

Abstract:We discuss a hypothetical existential threat from a 10 km diameter bolide discovered 6 months prior to impact with one case being a comet and the other being an asteroid. We show that an extension of our work on bolide fragmentation using an array of penetrators but modified with small nuclear explosive devices (NED) in the penetrators, combined with soon-to-be-realized heavy lift launch assets with positive $C_3$ such as NASA SLS or SpaceX Starship (with in-orbit refueling) is sufficient to mitigate this existential threat. A threat of this magnitude hitting the Earth at a closing speed of 40 km/s for the comet and 20 km/s for the asteroid would have an impact energy of roughly 65 Teratons TNT, or about ten thousand times larger than the current combined nuclear arsenal of the entire world. This is similar in energy to the KT extinction event that killed the dinosaurs some 66 million years ago. Such an event, if not mitigated, would be an existential threat to humanity. We show that mitigation is conceivable using existing technology, even with the short time scale of 6 months warning, but that the efficient coupling of the NED energy is critical.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We investigated the propagation of energy and momentum inside a small gravitational aggregate asteroid following a hypervelocity impact, comparable to NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) on asteroid Dimorphos. We show that the impact energy damps rapidly inside different kinds of granular structures, unable to reach the antipodal hemisphere of the impact. However, global reshaping of the asteroid after the formation of a sizeable (${\gt}1/3$ of target size) crater causes meter-range displacement of boulders on the antipodal hemisphere due to mass rearrangement to achieve a new equilibrium shape. As a result, a surface depression opposite to the crater is formed, which may produce some surface refreshment. The boulder mass ejection following the synthetic DART-like impact is estimated to be at least $0.1\, {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the mass of the Dimorphos-like target, in agreement with recent detections of boulders ejected from the actual DART impact.

Abstract:In 2022 September, the DART spacecraft (NASA's contribution to the Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment (AIDA) collaboration) will impact the asteroid Dimorphos, the secondary in the Didymos system. The crater formation and material ejection will affect the orbital period. In 2027, Hera (ESA's contribution to AIDA) will investigate the system, observe the crater caused by DART, and characterize Dimorphos. Before Hera's arrival, the target properties will not be well-constrained. The relationships between observed orbital change and specific target properties are not unique, but Hera's observations will add additional constraints for the analysis of the impact event, which will narrow the range of feasible target properties. In this study, we use three different shock physics codes to simulate momentum transfer from impactor to target and investigate the agreement between the results from the codes for well-defined target materials. In contrast to previous studies, care is taken to use consistent crushing behavior (e.g., distension as a function of pressure) for a given porosity for all codes. First, we validate the codes against impact experiments into a regolith simulant. Second, we benchmark the codes at the DART impact scale for a range of target material parameters (10%-50% porosity, 1.4-100 kPa cohesion). Aligning the crushing behavior improves the consistency of the derived momentum enhancement between the three codes to within +/-5% for most materials used. Based on the derived mass-velocity distributions from all three codes, we derive scaling parameters that can be used for studies of the ejecta curtain.

Abstract:This paper presents the use of the kinetic impact technique to deflect asteroids that may present some risk of collision with Earth. Within the work to be developed here, we intend to evaluate in more detail the possibility to deflect the orbit of the asteroid 101955 Bennu by applying variations in its velocity ([Formula: see text]v) at different positions along its orbital period and measuring effects of close encounters with planet Earth. We will see that, in a relatively long period of time, the asteroid has several close encounters with the planet, thus suffering a natural gravitational perturbation. With the application of the impulses, the relative distances change, causing variations in the energy of the asteroid and a large variation in the relative distance between the asteroid and Earth over a long period after the impulse. We present results related to the magnitude of the impulse applied, which is important because its defines the mass and velocity of the impactor to be considered. Then, we mapped the positions of the impulses along a period of the orbit of the asteroid. We finish by explaining what happens to the orbit of the asteroid during the periods of gravitational perturbation, since the close encounters amount to "Swing Bys" that intensify the variations of the relative distances between the bodies after the impulse is applied.

Abstract:The Gravity Tractor (GT) is a fully controlled asteroid deflection concept using the mutual gravity between a robotic spacecraft and an asteroid to slowly accelerate the asteroid in the direction of the "hovering" spacecraft. Based on early warning, provided by ground tracking and orbit prediction, it would be deployed a decade or more prior to a potential impact. Ion engines would be utilized for both the rendezvous with the asteroid and the towing phase. Since the GT does not dock with or otherwise physically contact the asteroid during the deflection process there is no requirement for knowledge of the asteroid's shape, composition, rotation state or other "conventional" characteristics. The GT would first reduce the uncertainty in the orbit of the asteroid via Earth tracking of its radio transponder while station keeping with the asteroid. If, after analysis of the more precise asteroid orbit a deflection is indeed indicated, the GT would "hover" above the surface of the asteroid in the direction of the required acceleration vector for a duration adequate to achieve the desired velocity change. The orbit of the asteroid is continuously monitored throughout the deflection process and the end state is known in real time. The performance envelope for the GT includes most NEOs which experience close gravitational encounters prior to impact and those below 150-200 meters in diameter on a direct Earth impact trajectory.

Abstract:DART, the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, successfully impacted asteroid Dimorphos on September 26, 2022, becoming the first mission to demonstrate asteroid deflection. Shared live via a NASA broadcast, over a million concurrent viewers around the world watched as the DART spacecraft streamed images to Earth up to the final second before its impact with Dimorphos. In this paper, we share the final phases of the DART encounter and the latest results from the DART Investigation Team's analysis of ground and space-based data. This includes measurements on the amount of deflection that DART imparted on Dimorphos, a determination of the momentum transfer enhancement factor, and results on understanding the geology and surface characteristics of the impact site. The success of the DART mission paves the future for a bold international Planetary Defense program. We also share ideas on bolstering international coordination, developing new technologies that can mitigate different types of asteroid threats, and closing identified gaps in our overall preparedness.
