Response of Stream Pollution Characteristics to Catchment Land Cover in Cao-E River Basin, China

Abstract:This study addressed the relationship of river water pollution characteristics to land covers and human activities in the catchments in a complete river system named Cao-E River in eastern China. Based on the hydrogeochemical data collected monthly over a period of 3 years, cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were adopted to categorize the river reaches and reveal their pollution characteristics. According to the differences of water quality in the river reaches and land use patterns and average population densities in their catchments, the whole river system could be categorized into three groups of river reaches, i.e., non-point sources pollution reaches (NPSPR), urban reaches (UR) and mixed sources pollution reaches (MSPR). In UR and MSPR, the water quality was mainly impacted by nutrient and organic pollution, while in NPSPR nutrient pollution was the main cause. The nitrate was the main nitrogen form in NPSPR and particulate phosphorus was the main phosphorus form in MSPR. There were no apparent trends for the variations of pollutant concentrations with increasing river flows in NPSPR and MSPR, while in UR the pollutant concentrations decreased with increasing river flows. Thus dry season was the critical period for water pollution control in UR. Therefore, catchment land covers and human activities had significant impact on river reach water pollution type, nutrient forms and water quality responses to hydrological conditions, which might be crucial for developing strategies to combat water pollution in watershed scale.

Given the fact of shortage and uneven distribution of water resource in coastal area from China, efficient water utilization is critical against the background of fast urbanization and growing demand arising from industrialization in coastal area from China. Meanwhile, environmental degradation is aggregating the constraint of water shortage on social economic development, industrial point pollution and non-point pollution arising from agricultural activities and municipal solid waste have emerged as the most challenging issues over water environmental management. Fragmented government management, the lack of interagency coordination, and the lack of public participation in EIA are the fundamental reason for the deterioration of riverine environments and overexploitation of water. The challenging issue facing decision makers now is how to resolve the conflict between increasing food demand and decreasing water supply without undermining the progress of urbanization and the industrial sector. A shift of strategic focus is urgently needed for Chinese Government to integrated water management by integrating water allocation and water quality management.

Impact of land-use/land-cover and landscape pattern on seasonal in-stream water quality in small watersheds

Abstract:Changes in land use land cover (LULC) and landscape pattern in arid areas can considerably impact water quality in small watersheds. Exploring the associations between land use, landscape pattern, and riverine water quality can inform land-use planning for water-quality security. In northwest China's Jing River Watershed (JRW), water samples were collected at 67 points in 2016–2017 and analyzed. Coupled with Sentinel-2 remote-sensing images, this study calculated the Canadian Water Quality Index (CWQI) to assign the water-quality category. The Random Forest classification characterized current LULC patterns and computed landscape metrics in a riparian buffer zone. The stepwise multiple linear regression and redundancy analysis methods investigated the relationships amongst LULC, eight landscape metrics, and eight water-quality parameters. The results indicated high concentrations of total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) in the JRW's middle and lower reaches. For CWQI, lacking evident temporal fluctuations was contrasted by noticeable spatial variations. Intense Human activities have aggravated the deterioration of the water quality of the JRW. LULC-type changes, including Waterbody, Forest-grassland, and Farmland, imposed notable impacts on seasonal water quality. For landscape metrics, patch cohesion index (COHESION) strongly correlated with chemical oxygen demand (COD), mineralization degree (MD), and TN. By contrast, patch density (PD) correlated negatively with TN. Interspersion juxtaposition index (IJI) strongly correlated with biochemical oxygen demand after five days (BOD5). COHESION, PD, and IJI can be critical factors in predicting water-quality changes at the small-watershed scale. Our findings offered a robust scientific basis to refine regional sustainable water development strategy and rational water-resource management.

Identifying the Critical Riparian Buffer Zone with the Strongest Linkage Between Landscape Characteristics and Surface Water Quality

Abstract:Influence of landscape pattern on water quality is complex and scale dependent. Existing literature mainly focuses on examining this influence at a wide range of spatial scales from local to basin level or to eco-regional scales. Studies on identifying the critical riparian zone, with certain buffer width and length that exhibit the strongest association between landscape characteristics and stream water quality, are still limited. Such identification is helpful for better understanding the influence of the adjacent landscape on stream water quality and is critical for effective landscape planning and local river management. In this study, the urban area of Xiangyang City along the Hanjiang River was selected as a case study. Water quality samples were collected at eight sites in the examined river system of the Hanjiang River from 2009 to 2014. Landscape pattern analysis, redundancy analysis and stepwise multiple linear regression analysis were used to explore the quantitative associations between landscape patterns and water quality. The results indicate that the landscape metrics that were selected explain approximately 63-87% of the variations in stream water quality at multiple buffer widths in 2009 and 2014. The strongest linkage between landscape characteristics and water quality occurred in the riparian zone with the buffer width of 300 m where the explanatory ability of the landscape metrics still varied at different buffer lengths and increased from 500 m to 8 km. Urban built-up land was more positively associated with degraded water quality at the smaller buffer widths than at the larger buffer widths, whereas forest land exhibited a stronger contribution to water quality improvements at wider buffer widths than at narrower buffer widths. The situation was different for the different buffer lengths. Urban built-up land was more correlated with water quality at longer buffer lengths, and forest land had a stronger contribution at shorter buffer lengths. Overall, landscape configuration seemed to have stronger effects on the water quality than landscape composition. These findings provide important information regarding multi-scale measures for sustainable landscape management to improve surface water quality.
Evaluation of ecological buffer zone based on landscape pattern for non-point source pollution control: A case study in Hanjiang River basin, China

Abstract:The deterioration of ecological environment caused by non-point source pollution (NPS) has seriously threatened human health and socioeconomic development. Effective identification of critical source areas and selecting appropriate best management practices (BMPs) for watersheds are the keys to controlling NPS. This paper, using Hanjiang River basin, the vital water source for the South-to-North Water Division, China, as a case study, presents a method for accurate critical source areas dentification according to the spatial distribution characteristics of underlying surface and pollution load by coupling NPS risk index (NPPRI), Minimum Cumulative Resistance (MCR) Model, and Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). In this research, ten single and three combined scenarios are set up in the critical source areas, including three non-engineering management practices, two engineering management practices, and five ecological buffer zones. Finally, the effect of BMPs for non-point source pollution is assessed by using landscape pattern theory and information entropy method. Furthermore, the influences of the five ecological buffer zones on the characteristics of landscape in watershed and the response relationship between the landscape pattern and NPS are analyzed. The following findings are obtained: (1) The critical source areas were mainly located in the south-central and southeastern part of the study area, accounting for 35.9 % of the total watershed area, and yielding 54.2 % and 60.7 % of the total nitrogen(TN) and total phosphorus(TP) loads in the watershed; (2) All ecological buffer zones play a positive role in NPS control with an average reduction rate of 32.1 % for TN and 46.7 % for TP, and the control effectiveness for TP are better than that for TN; (3) The deployment of the five ecological buffer zones have a significant impact on the interspersion juxtaposition index (IJI), the connectivity of the “sink” landscape is enhanced, the diversity of the “source” landscape is reduced and the “sink” landscape’s ability of interception is boosted; (4) The calculation result of information entropy shows the highest attribute value of practices in the ecological buffer zones is Buffer 200 m. Overall, the findings serve as a reference for NPS control and water environment management in the watershed and strengthen the feasibility of implementing of BMPs in the watershed.

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between land use/cover pattern and water quality could provide guidelines for non-point source pollution and facilitate sustainable development. The previous studies mainly relate the land use/cover of the entire region to the water quality at the monitoring sites, but the water quality at monitoring sites did not totally reflect the water environment of the entire basin. In this study, the land use/cover was monitored on Google Earth Engine in Tang-Pu Reservoir basin, China. In order to reflect the water quality of the whole study area, the spatial distribution of the determinants for water quality there, i.e., the total nitrogen and total phosphorus (TN&TP), were simulated by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The redundancy analysis explored the correlations between land use/cover pattern and simulated TN&TP. The results showed that: (1) From 2009 to 2019, forest was the dominant land cover, and there was little land use/cover change. The landscape fragmentation increased, and the connectivity decreased. (2) About 25% TP concentrations and nearly all the TN concentrations at the monitoring points did not reach drinking water standard, which means nitrogen and phosphorus pollution were the most serious problems. The highest output per unit TN&TP simulated by SWAT were 44.50 kg/hm2 and 9.51 kg/hm2 and occurred in areas with highly fragile landscape patterns. (3) TN&TP correlated positively with cultivated and construction land but negatively with forest. The correlation between forest and TN&TP summited at 500–700-m buffer and construction land at 100-m buffer. As the buffer size increased, the correlation between the cultivated land, and the TN weakened, while the correlation with the TP increased. TN&TP correlated positively with the Shannon’s Diversity Index and negatively with the Contagion Index. This study provides a new perspective for exporting the impact of land use/cover pattern on water quality.

Abstract:Identifying the multi-scale spatial relationship between land use and water quality is critical for determining the priorities and key areas of river management. To more accurately identify the scale effect of land-use patterns on water quality and quantitatively distinguish the difference in the impacts of land-use composition and configuration on water quality, we used 94 sites to extract the upstream catchment and riparian buffer zone with different widths. The results showed that the ability of land use variables with different buffer widths to explain water quality differed slightly from the ability of these variables at the catchment scale, and the joint explanatory ability of land use composition and configuration was greater than that of each individually. The patch density and landscape shape index of cultivated land, shrubland, and built-up land in the buffer area close to the water bodies were the main factors for the increase in the concentration of total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, total phosphorus, and suspended solids. As the width of the buffer increased, the role of the percent of land use increased. Our research indicates that water quality management needs to adopt a multi-scale perspective and focus on key local areas while coordinating at a broader scale.

Abstract:As non-point source pollution has emerged as a significant global and regional concern, climate change (CC), land use/cover transformation (LUCT), and management practices (MP) play vital roles in addressing nutrient pollution. However, current studies lack comprehensive quantification and consistent conclusions on the response to these factors, especially for management practices. To quantify and elucidate the impact of representative environmental factors on rapidly urbanizing regions, this study focused on the Shenzhen River, which serves as the most typical urbanizing watershed. Using a process-based distributed hydrological model with a factor-controlled simulation method, we identified significant differences in nutrient concentrations and the impacts of climate variability, land use/cover changes, and anthropogenic interventions from 2003 to 2020. Moreover, effective measures greatly improved water quality in the Shenzhen River during study period, as evident from trend and cluster analysis. However, ecological water supplements implemented since 2016 have led to a slight reduction in simulated runoff performance, and CC may amplify the synergistic effects of precipitation and temperature on the river system. While the implemented practices have been effective in reducing total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) loads, strong TN pollution control is still needed in rapidly urbanizing areas due to the results of land use/cover type changes. Our findings emphasize the intricate interplay among CC, LUCT, and MP in shaping water quality and hydrological processes in rapidly urbanizing watersheds, and clarify the independent effects of these factors on nutrients. This study contributes to a better understanding of the complex interactions between multiple factors in watersheds and provides guidance for sustainable watershed management.

The objective of the present research activity is to investigate aquatic ecosystem responses to water quality deterioration using a case study of Clariano River, Spain. The Clariano River faces low water quality and the loss of biodiversity in some parts as a result of agricultural, industrial and livestock activities as well as wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) effluents entering the river. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), an eco-hydrological model, is used in the present study for the modelling of discharge, sediment and nutrients. SWAT-CUP is also used to calibrate and validate the SWAT model. We are currently employing the results from the calibrated model to obtain a better understanding of possible relations between water quality and biodiversity. In fact, the present study will focus on macroinvertebrates as biological indicators of stream health, and the model predictions will be coupled with empirical correlations between stream water quality and macroinvertebrates presence in order to assess the impacts of water quality changes on aquatic ecosystem. Water Balance in a Watershed Considering the Response of Vegetation Cover to Rainfall Changes

Abstract:This study distinguishes the direct and indirect effects of rainfall changes on the water balance in a watershed. The water balance is used to build a model based on Eagleson's ecohydrological optimality theory to describe the vegetation cover response to rainfall changes. An attribution analysis distinguishes the direct effect of rainfall on the water balance shifts and the indirect effect of vegetation cover which is influenced by the rainfall. This method is applied to the Xilamulun-Laoha River basin in the Horqin Sands area. The results show a positive correlation between the vegetation cover and the rainfall with the relationship affected by the rainfall intensity and frequency. Increased rainfall mainly increases the evapotranspiration and soil water storage during the non-growing season. Increased rainfall has a positive effect on every water balance term. However, the indirect effects of the vegetation cover result in negative changes to all the water balance terms, except for the evapotranspiration. The relationship between the evapotranspiration efficiency and the rainfall is affected by the response of the vegetation cover to rainfall changes.

Abstract:Renewable freshwater is a fundamental natural resource for sustaining human social development and the health of terrestrial ecosystems. While blue water (BW), which can be directly utilized by human beings, has received significant attention, the importance of green water (GW), crucial for ecosystem safety, has often been overlooked in water resource assessments. To date, there has been a lack of integrated research incorporating the detection and attribution of changes in both BW and GW in the Yangtze River basin (YRB), China's largest river basin, resulting in a deficiency of comparative and interactive analyses between them. In this study, we examined the historical trends and long-term memory of BW and GW flows across 272 sub-basins of the YRB using a multiwater-variable calibrated SWAT model, which was validated by streamflow, evapotranspiration, and terrestrial water storage change. We determined the individual contributions of climate variability and land use changes to BW and GW changes. Additionally, we identified the responses characteristics of BW and GW changes in four different ecosystems primarily characterized by alpine grasslands, cropland, forests, and river-lake systems, respectively. The results indicate a non-significant decreasing trend in precipitation and BW in most regions, while an increasing trend is observed in GW, which is expected to persist in the future. Climate variability played a predominant role in BW and GW changes, while land use change also appeared to have significant impact on monthly GW changes. GW showed a positive correlation with precipitation/humidity index in relatively dry and moderately humid areas, but a negative correlation in highly humid areas. Moreover, a stronger correlation was found between the gross primary production (GPP) of terrestrial ecosystems and GW compared to GPP and BW. The findings contribute to guiding the harmonious utilization of water resources between humans and ecosystems in the YRB, as well as optimizing water allocation.
Aquatic Landscapes: The Importance of Integrating Waters

Abstract:The landscapes of the Mid-Atlantic Region are dissected by networks of rivers, with their associated wetlands and riparian areas. These systems provide important ecosystem services, both ecological functions and societal values, such as floodwater storage, public water supplies, recreational greenbelts, and habitats for a diversity of flora and fauna. Ecologists and hydrologists have increasingly focused on integrating across the four dimensions of these ecosystems: longitudinal, lateral, hyporheic, and time. Here, we use a hydrogeomorphic classification system to describe wetland types, and present a conceptual model of how they connect to other waters through critical components such as hydrologic connectivity, energy flows and sources, and biological integrity. The connectivity of aquatic habitats is described and related in a watershed context. Concepts are supported by a technical review of pertinent literature. We emphasize the flow of water, nutrients, and organisms from headwaters downstream through an interconnected riverine ecosystem.

Progressively more streamflow has been generated in the early part of the year compared to the latter part, consequently leading to the earlier occurrence of the day representing the midpoint of yearly mass flow. VIC simulations suggest that these changes in observed streamflow were due to the combined effects of changes in precipitation, evapotranspiration, rainfall runoff, and baseflow and were caused primarily by climate change above Tang Nai Hai (TNH) hydrometric station. Below TNH where human activity is relative intense, land cover/ use change and reservoir release impacts became important. Changes in snowmelt runoff were negligible over the past decades. Owing to this, snowmelt runoff appeared to play only a modest role in the changing hydrology of the region. The conservation programs were shown to start to exhibit some positive impacts on water resources in the UYRB. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Assessment of land use change impacts on watershed hydrologic processes is of great importance to draw the attention of water resource managers and policy makers for better planning and management of the shrinking resources for the survival of surrounding population of the region. Chirah watershed is an important hydrologic unit which generates an average of 0.53 MCM water per day. Soan River originates from here, supplying an average inflow of 0.2 MCM day−1 to Simly Dam. Since a couple of decades, rainfall variability coupled with growing population is threatening Soan River flows. Deforestation and land use/land cover (LULC) changes have affected the natural pathways of water, decreased groundwater recharge, and triggered flash floods. Therefore, the aim of this research was to assess the impact of LULC changes on the hydrologic processes of the watershed using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a hydrological model to propose management strategies. LULC change assessment was carried out on Landsat-5 TM and OLI_TIRS images through 'Supervised Classification' at four-time steps (1990, 1999, 2010, and 2016). Due to limited ground observations, corresponding Google Earth images were used in mapping. The SWAT model was evaluated using the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) and relative volumetric error (RVE) objective functions on monthly time steps. The NSE achieved during calibration and validation, 0.63 and 0.45, respectively, indicates acceptable levels of model performance despite outliers in the hydro-meteorological dataset. Similarly, the RVE was less than ±5% during both periods, indicating that the model simulated water balance reasonably well. Changes in LULC resulted in alteration of all the hydrological parameters. Conversion of scrub thorny forest (14.74%) into built-up areas (9%) resulted in higher imperviousness which triggered runoff to 24% and lowered groundwater recharge by 8% in 27 years indicating that the hydrologic regime is sensitive to LULC changes.
