This review article considers the main environmental indices presented in the literature, including aspects such as the safety of used chemical reagents, analytical performance, energy consumption, and waste generation. The review reflects recent advances in green indices and their potential role in a transition to greener and more sustainable analytical practices.

Abstract:Green analytical chemistry (GAC) is a concept to encourage using energy-saving instruments, decreasing the use of toxic agents or compounds, and producing waste with a minimal amount during analytical procedures. The concept of GAC is widely recognized in analytical chemistry laboratories. Simple, comprehensive and flexible greenness metrics should be developed and applied to evaluate the impacts of analytical procedures on the environment, human health and human safety. Sixteen greenness metrics just like National Environmental Methods Index (NEMI), Analytical Eco-scale, Analytical method volume intensity (AMVI), Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI) and Analytical Greenness Calculator (AGREE) are chosen as the typical greenness metrics in this review. The considering criteria, characteristics, advantages, disadvantages and applications of these sixteen GAC metric tools will be introduced and discussed in this article. We hope this review is helpful for analyst to use different metrics to assess the greenness of different analytical procedures.

Abstract:The development of new green methodologies and their broader adoption for promoting sustainable development in chemistry laboratories and industry play a significant role in society, due to the economic importance of chemistry and its widespread presence in everyday life. Therefore, a sustainable approach to chemistry contributes to the well-being of the worldwide population and complies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and the European Green Deal. The review highlights how batch and continuous mechanochemical methods are an eco-friendly approach for organic synthesis, with a lower environmental footprint in most cases, compared to solution-based procedures. The assessment is objectively based on the use of green metrics (e.g., atom and real atom economy, E-factor, process mass intensity, material parameter recovery, Eco-scale, stoichiometric factor, etc.) and indicators (e.g. DOZN tool and life cycle assessment, LCA, studies) applied to organic transformations such as synthesis of the amide bond, carbamates, heterocycles, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), porphyrins, porous organic polymers (POPs), metal- or acid-catalysed processes, multicomponent and condensation reactions, rearrangements, etc. The generalized absence of bulk solvents, the precise control over the stoichiometry (i.e., using agents in a stoichiometrically rather than in excess), and the more selective reactions enabling simplified work-up procedures are the distinctive factors, marking the superiority of mechanochemical processes over solution-based chemistry.

Abstract:The first green chemistry metricsthe E factor (kgs waste/kg product) and atom economy (mol wt of product/sum of mol wts of starting materials)were introduced in the early 1990s and were actually green chemistry avant la lettre. In the last two decades, these two metrics have been adopted worldwide by both academia and industry. The E factor has been refined to distinguish between simple and complete E factors, for example, and to define the system boundaries. Other mass-based metrics such as process mass intensity (PMI) and reaction mass efficiency (RME) have been proposed. However, mass-based metrics need to be augmented by metrics which measure the environmental impact of waste, such as life cycle assessment (LCA), and metrics for assessing the economic viability of products and processes. The application of such metrics in measuring the sustainability of processes for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and other fine chemicals is discussed in detail. Mass-based metrics alone are not sufficient to measure the greenness and sustainability of processes for the conversion of renewable biomass vs fossil-based feedstocks. Various metrics for use in assessing sustainability of the manufacture of basic chemicals from renewable biomass are discussed. The development of a sustainable biobased production of chemicals meshes well with the concept of a circular economy, based on resource efficiency and waste minimization by design, to replace traditional linear, take–make–use–dispose economies.

Abstract:Chemometric modeling is an important part of the modern analytical chemistry allowing reliable qualitative and quantitative analysis in numerous practically important tasks. Besides significant simplification and cost reduction of analytical procedures achieved through the application of chemometrics, there is a considerable green impact from the use of these methods. However, not so many reports evaluate the particular impact of the chemometric procedures on making the analysis green. Here we evaluate this impact using the popular Eco-Scale greenness score. A combination of chemometric methods with inexpensive spectroscopic, electroanalytical and other techniques eliminates the need in applying dangerous and environmentally unfriendly reagents and procedures. Based on the literature data from several representative case studies we have demonstrated that the Eco-Scale score in addressing particular analytical tasks can be improved up to 40 points through the use of chemometric-based methods.

Abstract:The twelve principles of Green Analytical Chemistry serve as a guideline for introducing greenness in the analytical methods. Microextraction-based sample preparation has been developed as a greener alternative to large-scale liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase extraction, minimising the amount of solvents, eliminating toxic substances, reducing sample size, and generating less waste. However, the establishment of microextraction as the standard method in routine analysis is still limited, although they are becoming increasingly available. Therefore, this review aims to emphasize the features of microextractions and their evaluation using greenness metrics. The greenness metrics, such as NEMI, AES, GAPI, AGREE, their modified versions, and the new SPMS, are discussed along with their application to microextractions. The analysis involves comparing their scores and highlighting factors that influence their greenness. In summary, microextraction techniques could be a preferred choice to replace large-scale extraction and be used as standard methods for routine laboratories.

Abstract:A unified metrics toolkit has been developed to evaluate sustainability of reactions, encompassing a comprehensive and holistic range of criteria for measuring how green a reaction is, covering quantitative and qualitative criteria both upstream and downstream of the reaction itself. In addition, three new metrics are proposed, optimum efficiency (OE), renewable percentage (RP) and waste percentage (WP). The structure of the toolkit is tailored to give a level of detail and complexity commensurate with the stage of research, with an initial 'light-touch' appraisal at a few mg scale through to very in-depth analyses incorporating lifecycle considerations at large (multi-kg) scale. The toolkit additionally allows benchmarking of reactions against state-of-the-art in terms of their 'green credentials'. By promoting critical thinking in the user it also lends itself to being an educational tool, and its widespread adoption will support the training of a new generation of chemists to whom the use of greener and more sustainable techniques becomes second nature.

Abstract:Environmental measures have drawn more attention recently as a means of identifying cost-effective, safe, and green approaches in analytical methods. As a result, white and green analytical chemistry was developed. Greenness, whiteness, and chemical risks are all measured under the general expression "environmental measurements." For the first time, the greenness, whiteness, and chemical risk-measuring programs are presented along with their histories, concepts, advantages, and disadvantages. The six scales that were published between 2020 and 2023, including the Analytical Greenness Calculator (AGREE), the Analytical Greenness Metric for Sample Preparation (AGREEprep), the Complementary Green Analytical Procedure Index (ComplexGAPI), Red-Green-Blue (RGB12), blue applicability grade index (BAGI), and the Chloroform-oriented Toxicity Estimation (ChlorTox) scales are discussed. Also, the applications of several analytical methods have been compared. Lastly, patterns for the future were suggested. We hope this review is helpful for analysts to stay up-to-date with recent greenness, whiteness, and chemical risk scales. Additionally, the most appropriate procedure has been chosen, applied, and compared easily.

Abstract:In the past century, significant advancements in synthetic chemistry undeniably contributed to the wellness of mankind, from the development of new drugs to the design of materials for energy production and storage. However, this technological progress has also brought forth significant challenges, emphasizing the urgent need to rethink chemistry for more environmentally friendly approaches. In this Review a critical and comprehensive analysis of the sustainability in the preparation of commonly used photocatalysts is performed, by employing mass‐based metrics. Additionally, a comparative evaluation is made between some selected photocatalytic protocols and traditional reactions not relying on light. The objective is to quantitatively evaluate claims of sustainability and greenness commonly associated with photocatalysis, by exploring the real impact of photocatalytic procedures on waste generation. This quantitative approach provides insights into the broader concept of sustainable processes, challenging assumptions and encouraging a more rigorous evaluation of green claims in catalysis. Furthermore, the toxicity of the involved species and the availability of the required chemical elements is commented on to provide a global perspective on the sustainability of the analyzed transformations. The results shed light on the true environmental footprint of photocatalysis and reveal that the notion of green chemistry can sometimes be overstated.

Abstract:The environmental and health impacts of chemical processes have been a growing concern, leading to the establishment of Green Chemistry principles. Introducing new metrics for the assessment of methods' greenness is crucial to evaluate the exerted efforts to conserve the environment. In this work, we introduce a Modified Green Star Area (MoGSA) and software to assess the greenness of chemical reactions in laboratory settings. MoGSA refines the traditional Green Star Area Index (GSAI) by allowing users to selectively apply specific principles of Green Chemistry based on their relevance to the chemical process being evaluated. This approach addresses the limitations of GSAI, which often lacks clear boundaries between green and non-green practices and does not account for the varying applicability of the 12 Green Chemistry principles across different contexts. Through comparative case studies on catalytic stereoselective reduction of acetophenone, MoGSA demonstrates its utility in providing a more refined and flexible assessment, enhancing both educational and industrial applications of sustainable chemical practices. Abstract:Chemists use atoms as the building blocks in reactions to design new molecules for materials, medicines, and much more. However, the chemical elements on our planet are a finite resource, so we need to prevent them from running out or being wasted. How do chemists do this? The principles of Green Chemistry guide chemists, helping them to design new products both efficiently and safely, while limiting or preventing pollution along the way. Scientists consider them through every step of creating a new product—from early experiments in the laboratory, all the way up to large-scale industrial production. Chemists can compare the materials and processes used to create their products using a Life Cycle Assessment, which can calculate factors such as water, energy, and resource inputs as well as production of pollutants like carbon dioxide. All of this means we can do exciting and important science while protecting our planet, too!

Abstract:Biocatalysis is the main green chemistry technology adopted by the fine chemicals and pharmaceutical industries to manufacture chemicals with higher yield. Heterogeneously catalyzed processes using supported metal or molecular catalysts are still an exception. Reviewing the actual development of green chemistry in these important segments of the chemical enterprise, we investigate the reasons behind such a delay in innovation. Finally, we consider whether green metrics developed by chemists is actually purposeful to management, and find that this concept needs to be streamlined to include simple financial metrics quantifying the impact of prevention on the company’s bottom line.

Abstract:Green chemistry has progressed from being a driver for change in the chemical and allied industries to being a critical part of chemical education at all levels. The future chemist must be able to practice their trade in the light of increasing concerns about waste and resources, the safety of chemicals in consumer products, and increasingly restrictive legislation. While there are green chemistry educational resources available including lectures and experiments as well as numerous books on green chemistry and major green chemical technologies, there is no “green equivalent” of a standard organic chemistry textbook Systematically covering a variety of well-known reactions that commonly feature in standard organic textbooks this book supplements and supports the standard organic chemistry texts. It highlights the main sustainability issues of classical and contemporary organic transformations and critically evaluates them within a metric of established Green Chemistry Principles noting where additional efforts are needed to improve their environmental footprint. Written by a team of expert authors with a multinational advisory board, this book is a fantastic resource for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students worldwide.
What Lies Behind Teaching and Learning Green Chemistry to Promote Sustainability Education? A Literature Review

Abstract:In this qualitative study, we aim to identify suitable pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning green chemistry among college students and preservice teachers by examining the teaching methods that have been used to promote green chemistry education (GCE) and how these methods have supported green chemistry learning (GCL). We found 45 articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals since 2000 that specifically described teaching methods for GCE. The content of the articles was analyzed based on the categories of the teaching methods used and the revised version of Bloom’s taxonomy. Among the selected articles, collaborative and interdisciplinary learning, and problem-based learning were utilized in 38 and 35 articles, respectively. These were the most frequently used teaching methods, alongside a general combination of multiple teaching methods and teacher presentations. Developing collaborative and interdisciplinary learning skills, techniques for increasing environmental awareness, problem-centered learning skills, and systems thinking skills featuring the teaching methods were seen to promote GCL in 44, 40, 34, and 29 articles, respectively. The results showed that the integration of green chemistry teaching (GCT), e.g., with sustainable education, promoted GCL by fostering environmental consciousness and behavioral change and cognitive processes in a sustainable direction.
