Abstract:The osmotic energy, an abundant renewable energy source, can be directly converted to electricity by nanofluidic devices with ion‐selective membranes. 2D nanochannels constructed by nanosheets possess abundant lateral interfacial ion‐exchange sites and exhibit great superiority in nanofluidic devices. However, the most accessible orientation of the 2D nanochannels is parallel to the membrane surface, undoubtedly resulting in the conductivity loss. Herein, we first demonstrate vertically aligned 2D sub‐nanochannel arrays self‐assembled by a smectic liquid crystal (LC) network that exhibit high‐performance osmotic energy conversion. The 2D sub‐nanochannel arrays are fabricated by in‐situ photo‐polymerization of monomers in the LC phase. The as‐prepared membrane exhibits excellent water‐resistance and mechanical strength. The 2D sub‐nanochannels with excellent cation selectivity and conductivity show high‐performance osmotic energy conversion. The power density reaches up to about 22.5 W/m2 with NaCl solution under a 50‐fold concentration gradient, which is among with ultrahigh power density. Giant Osmotic Energy Conversion through Vertical-Aligned Ion-Permselective Nanochannels in Covalent Organic Framework Membranes

Abstract:Nanofluidic membranes have been demonstrated as promising candidates for osmotic energy harvesting. However, it remains a long-standing challenge to fabricate high-efficiency ion-permselective membranes with well-defined channel architectures. Here, we demonstrate high-performance osmotic energy conversion membranes based on oriented two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with ultrashort vertically aligned nanofluidic channels that enabled efficient and selective ion transport. Experiments combined with molecular dynamics simulations revealed that exquisite control over channel orientation, charge polarity, and charge density contributed to high ion selectivity and permeability. When applied to osmotic energy conversion, a pair of 100 nm thick oppositely charged COF membranes achieved an ultrahigh output power density of 43.2 W m-2 at a 50-fold salinity gradient and up to 228.9 W m-2 for the Dead Sea and river water system. The achieved power density outperforms the state-of-the-art nanofluidic membranes, suggesting the great potential of oriented COF membranes in the fields of advanced membrane technology and energy conversion.

One Porphyrin Per Chain Self-Assembled Helical Ion-Exchange Channels for Ultrahigh Osmotic Energy Conversion

Abstract:Ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) convert osmotic energy into electricity when embedded in a reverse electrodialysis cell. IEMs with both high permselectivity and ionic conductivity are highly needed to increase the energy conversion efficiency. The ionic conductivity can be improved by increasing the content of immobile charge carriers, but it is always accompanied by undesirable permselectivity decrease due to excess swelling. Until now, breaking the permselectivity-conductivity tradeoff still has remained a challenge. Here, we demonstrate a membrane with the least ion-exchange capacity (∼10-2 mequiv g-1), generating an ultrahigh power density of 19.3 W m-2 at a 50-fold concentration ratio. The membrane is made of a porphyrin-core four-star block copolymer (p-BCP), forming the high-density helical porphyrin channels (∼1011 cm-2) under the synergistic effect of BCP self-assembly and porphyrin π-π stacking. The porphyrin channel shows high Cl- selectivity and high conductivity, benefiting high-performance osmotic energy conversion. This economic and facile membrane design strategy provides a promising approach to developing a new generation of IEMs.

Massively Enhanced Charge Selectivity, Ion Transport, and Osmotic Energy Conversion by Antiswelling Nanoconfined Hydrogels

Abstract:Developing a nanofluidic membrane with simultaneously enhanced ion selectivity and permeability for high-performance osmotic energy conversion has largely been unexplored. Here, we tackle this issue by the confinement of highly space-charged hydrogels within an orderedly aligned nanochannel array membrane. The nanoconfinement effect endows the hydrogel-based membrane with excellent antiswelling property. Furthermore, experimental and simulation results demonstrate that such a nanoconfined hydrogel membrane exhibits massively enhanced cation selectivity and ion transport properties. Consequently, an amazingly high power density up to ∼52.1 W/m2 with an unprecedented energy conversion efficiency of 37.5% can be reached by mixing simulated salt-lake water (5 M NaCl) and river water (0.01 M NaCl). Both efficiency indexes surpass those of most of the state-of-the-art nanofluidic membranes. This work offers insights into the design of highly ion-selective membranes to achieve ultrafast ion transport and high-performance osmotic energy harvesting.

Abstract:Bioinspired nanofluidic devices have drawn increasing global interest due to their giant applicable potential in a wide range of fields. By mimicking biological prototype, it is expected to achieve high energy conversion efficiency and tunable ion transport. However, the low osmotic conversion efficiency, weak ion transport capability and poor mechanical performance limit practical application. We designed a class of heterogeneous membrane consisting of a support layer and a thin top layer to meet fundamental requirements. To achieve higher power generation, we incorporated metal organic framework (MOF) nanosheets (dispersed phase) into polymer matrix (continuous phase) to afford a mixed matrix top layer. This unique structure addressed the geometric restriction associated with the polymeric specie due to their limited pore accessibility. As a result, the presented membranes produced high power density of ca. 7 W m−2 and a high energy conversion efficiency of ca. 40% under a salinity gradient of 50 (0.5 M|0.01 M, NaCl). This work thus offers an insight into a new methodology in the development of a novel membrane technology for highly efficient energy conversion.

Abstract:The nanofluidic ion transporting channels for harvesting blue osmotic energy between river water and seawater have received great attentions recently. However, the design of excellent ion selective nanochannel membranes while retaining high mechanical strength and ion flux remains a challenge. Herein, we present a novel multi-stage heterogeneous nanochannel membranes consisting of alternating TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs) and MXene layers inspired by the multi-layer structure of natural soil. The ingenious binding of "soft layer" of TOCNFs acting as ion selective layer and "hard layer" of MXene acting as ion permeable/structural support layer contributes to the fast cationic transport through the robust nanochannel membranes. In hypersaline solutions, a remarkable power density of 95.13 W m −2 is produced. This work provides a new strategy for heterogeneous nanochannel membranes for osmotic energy generation.

Abstract:Designing a nanofluidic membrane with high selectivity and fast ion transport property is the key towards high-performance osmotic energy conversion. However, most of reported membranes can produce power density less than commercial benchmark (5 W/m2), due to the imbalance between ion selectivity and permeability. Here, we report a novel nanoarchitectured design of a heterogeneous membrane with an ultrathin and dense zirconium-based UiO-66-NH2 metal-organic framework (MOF) layer and a highly aligned and interconnected branched alumina nanochannel membrane. The design leads to a continuous trilayered pore structure of large geometry gradient in the sequence from angstrom-scale to nano-scale to sub-microscale, which enables the enhanced directional ion transport, and the angstrom-sized (~6.6-7 Å) UiO-66-NH2 windows render the membrane with high ion selectivity. Consequently, the novel heterogeneous membrane can achieve a high-performance power of ~8 W/m2 by mixing synthetic seawater and river water. The power density can be largely upgraded to an ultrahigh ~17.1 W/m2 along with ~48.5% conversion efficiency at a 50-fold KCl gradient. This work not only presents a new membrane design approach but also showcases the great potential of employing the zirconium-based MOF channels as ion-channel-mimetic membranes for highly efficient blue energy harvesting.

Abstract:Nature's various hierarchical structures exhibit exceptional performance in enhancing mass transport. However, how to bionic nano-hierarchical structures to enhance ion dynamics and achieve charge regulation is a significant challenge. Herein, a nano-hierarchical porous hybrid membrane inspired by nature was designed by integrating 1D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on the 2D MXene substrate utilizing MOF nanoparticles with tailorable positive and negative surface charges. The synergistic effects of the bioinspired nanohierarchical porous structure and surface charge interactions significantly enhance the performance and stability of the nanoconfined membrane, as corroborated by experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations. As a result, the optimized nanohierarchical porous membrane exhibits high a cation selectivity of 0.95, an outstanding power density of 35.04 W m-2, and excellent stability over one month. Synergizing enhanced mass transport and ion dynamics in nano-hierarchically structured materials with tailored charge improves osmotic power generation efficiency and benefits logic circuits with controlled charge transport.

Abstract:The capture of sustainable osmotic energy from salinity gradients has huge potential to solve the global issues of energy shortage and environmental pollution. However, developing membranes with high-performance ion transport and ion selectivity to achieve a high energy conversion efficiency is challenging. Herein, based on novel sulfonated microporous polymers (SPIMs), we report a series of membranes with densely distributed and subnanometer charged nanochannels. The inefficient packing of SPIM chains not only provide an interconnected microporous structure as three-dimensional nanofluidic channels to facilitate a fast ion transport but also ensure high cation permselectivity via the negatively charged sulfonated groups. The maximum power density of SPIM membrane reaches up to 9.58 W m–2 under a 50-fold salinity gradient, which is superior to that of Nafion 117. This work can inspire the design of membrane materials for advanced osmotic energy conversion systems.

Abstract:AbstractAn ion‐selective membrane can directly convert the osmotic energy to electricity through reverse electrodialysis. However, developing an advanced membrane that simultaneously possesses high power density, excellent mechanical strength, and convenient large‐scale production for practical osmotic energy conversion, remains challenging. Here, the fabrication of ultrathin and ultrastrong Kevlar aramid nanofiber (KANF) membranes with interconnected three‐dimensional (3D) nanofluidic channels via a simple blade coating method is reported. The negatively charged 3D nanochannels show typical surface‐charge‐governed nanofluidic ion transport and exhibit excellent cation selectivity. When applied to osmotic energy conversion, the power density of the KANF membrane‐based generator reaches 4.8 W m–2 (seawater/river water) and can be further increased to 13.8 W m–2 at 328 K, which are higher than most of the state‐of‐the‐art membranes. Importantly, a 4‐µm‐thickness KANF membrane shows ultrahigh tensile strength (565 MPa) and Young's modulus (25 GPa). This generator also exhibits ultralong stability over 120 days, showing great potential in practical energy conversions.

Abstract:Biomimetic nanochannels are desirable materials for high‐efficiency utilization of osmotic energy. However, the current power generation performance is limited by the low ion selectivity and ion flux. Here, novel nanochannels with double‐network structure based on cellulose nanofibers intercalated with carbon nanotubes are demonstrated. The relatively high cationic selectivity and ion flux are obtained due to the enlarged charge polarity and space for ion transport in the double‐network nanochannel, which is favorable for the osmotic power conversion. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the power density under 50‐fold NaCl (4.67 W m−2) outperforms most state‐of‐the‐art nanochannel membranes with the same test conditions. By applying the concentration gradient between artificial (50‐fold KCl) and real seawater/river water, a high power density of 5.53 and 6.51 W m−2 can be achieved respectively, which exceeds the standard output of the ion‐selective membrane for commercialization. The design of the biomimetic double‐network nanochannels provides a new platform for controllable ion transport and high‐performance power generation. Novel functional nanochannels with double‐network structure are fabricated with cellulose nanofibers and carbon nanotubes. The enlarged charge polarity and space for ion transport contribute to the high cationic selectivity and ion flux. The osmotic power generation device outputs a high power density of 4.67 W m−2 under 50‐fold NaCl.

Abstract:Carbon nanofibre (CNF) membranes with 3D network structures have substantial potential for ion transport and energy harvesting applications. However, large diameter and low charge density at the surface limit their ion selectivity and osmotic energy conversion performance. In this study, we fabricated a composite membrane with improved ion transport by co-deposition on the hierarchical 3D porous nanofibers with polydopamine (PDA) and poly (sodium- p -styrenesulfonate) (PSSNa), and the hierarchical 3D porous membrane substrate comprised of carbon nanofiber and electrodeposited 3D graphene (GF) sheets. By regulating the ratio of PDA to PSS, the size and surface charge density in the ion channel can be optimised, and the power density measured at the output reached 7.5 W m −2 between seawater and river water. In addition, the membrane performs excellent anti-protein contamination properties, which can be attributed to a negative layer of sulfonic acid and phenolic hydroxyl groups carried by polydopamine and polystyrene sodium sulfonate. This hierarchical 3D membrane exhibited high mechanical strength and stability, which was confirmed during one week of monitoring under acidic and alkaline conditions. This preparation process is a simple cost-effective and a highly feasible strategy for achieving osmotic energy harvesting with high efficiency.

Abstract:The capture of sustainable energy from a salinity gradient, in particular, using renewable biomass-derived functional materials, has attracted significant attention. In order to convert osmotic energy to electricity, many membrane materials with nanofluidic channels have been developed. However, the high cost, complex preparation process, and low output power density still restrict the practical application of traditional membranes. Herein, we report the synthesis of highly flexible and mechanically robust nanofiber-arrays-based carbonaceous ordered mesoporous nanowires (CMWs) through a simple and straightforward soft-templating hydrothermal carbonization approach. This sequential superassembly strategy shows a high yield and great versatility in controlling the dimensions of CMWs with the aspect ratio changes from about 3 to 39. Furthermore, these CMWs can be used as novel building blocks to construct functional hybrid membranes on macroporous alumina. This nanofluidic membrane with asymmetric geometry and charge polarity exhibits low resistance and high-performance energy conversion. High-performance osmotic energy harvesting enabled by the synergism of space and surface charge in two-dimensional nanofluidic membranes

Abstract:As promising prospects for renewable power harvesting, two-dimensional (2D) nanochannels for osmotic energy capture in a reverse electrodialysis arrangement have garnered significant attention. However, existing 2D nanochannel membranes have shown limited power generation capabilities due to challenges in balancing ion flux and selectivity. Here, we construct montmorillonite (MMT)/TEMPO-mediated oxidation cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs) nanocomposite membranes for enhanced ion transmembrane transport. The intercalation of TOCNFs not only enlarges the interlayer distance, but also provides abundant space charge inside the nanochannels. Benefiting from the strong ion selectivity and high ion flux, the composite membrane achieves a remarkable power output of ∼16.57 W/m2 in the gradient of artificial seawater and river water, exceeding that of the state-of-the-art heterogeneous membrane-based osmotic energy conversion systems. Both experimental and theoretical findings confirm that the synergism of space and surface charge plays a crucial role in promoting osmotic energy conversion. This research contributes valuable insights into the optimization of 2D membranes for efficient clean energy harvesting purposes.

Abstract:Electric eels can convert ionic concentration gradients into a high-efficiency power via a large number of sub-2 nm transmembrane ion channels, which can exhibit high ion selectivity and strong diode-like ion rectification property. Inspired by this, herein, we report on a sub-2 nm scale ionic diode membrane, composed of an ultrathin (~110 nm) β-ketoenamine-linked two-dimensional covalent-organic framework (COF) membrane and a highly ordered alumina nanochannel membrane (ANM), for highly efficient osmotic energy harvesting. As verified by our experimental and simulation results, the heterostructured membrane with the features of asymmetric charges and pore sizes in two aligned COF (1.1 nm) and ANM (100 nm) channels is capable of highly rectifying ion transport even in high 0.5 M salt solution. Benefiting from the presence of abundant sub-2 nm COF-based ion channels and the strong ionic diode effect, an unprecedented power density of up to 27.8 W/m 2 is achieved by mixing the artificial salt-lake water and river water (500-fold NaCl gradient). This study will open new avenues of using the rectified ion channel-mimetic nanofluidic membrane as a new platform towards the exploration and development of an ultrahigh osmotic power generator.

Abstract:Heterogeneous membranes play a crucial role in osmotic energy conversion by effectively reducing concentration polarization. However, most heterogeneous membranes mitigate concentration polarization through an asymmetric charge distribution, resulting in compromised ion selectivity. Herein, hetero-nanochannels with asymmetric wettability composed of 2D mesoporous carbon and graphene oxide are constructed. The asymmetric wettability of the membrane endows it with the ability to suppress the concentration polarization without degrading the ion selectivity, as well as achieving a diode-like ion transport feature. As a result, enhanced osmotic energy harvesting is achieved with a power density of 6.41 W m-2. This represents a substantial enhancement of 102.80-137.85% when compared to homogeneous 2D membranes, surpassing the performance of the majority of reported 2D membranes. Importantly, the membrane can be further used for high-performance ionic power harvesting by regulating ion transport, exceeding previously reported data by 89.1%. A heterogeneous membrane used for osmotic energy harvesting is fabricated by hydrophobic 2D mesoporous carbon and hydrophilic graphene oxide. Benefiting from the asymmetric wettability structure, the membrane shows diode-like ion transport features, suppressing the concentration polarization without degrading the ion selectivity, leading to a promoted osmotic energy conversion performance.image

Abstract:Amphiphilic molecule and ion polymer are used to enhance the ion selectivity and permeability of graphene oxide‐based laminar membrane for osmotic energy conversion. The ionic polymer polyacrylate sodium (PAAS) provides negatively charged groups to the nanochannel. The amphiphilic molecule dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DODAB) can absorb more PAAS molecules to enhance the ion selectivity and formhydrophobic interface in the nanochannel to reduce the friction of ion transport. Graphene‐based laminate membranes with selective ion‐transport capability show great potential in renewable osmotic energy harvesting. One of the great challenges is to reduce the overall energy barriers while remain the high ion selectivity in the transmembrane ion transport process. Here, a strategy is proposed to break the trade‐off between ion selectivity and permeability in laminar nanochannels using amphiphilic molecules as modifier, which enhances the surface charge density of nanochannel by loading more ion polymer with polar head and lows the frictional force of ion transport with hydrophobic tail. The conversion efficiency can reach to 32% in osmotic energy harvesting (0.5 m/0.01 m concentration gradient) after adopting this modifier. During the process of mixing real river water and seawater, the maximum power density can reach to 13.38 W m−2. The amphiphilic molecules also bind adjacent nanosheets, endowing the membrane's strong mechanical strength and high stability in aqueous solution. This work can open up a new way to regulate the transmembrane ion transport in 2D laminate membranes.

Abstract:A heterogeneous membrane formed by coating a positively charged self‐assembled metal–organic framework monolayer (SAMM) film on a porous anodic aluminum oxide substrate is developed for osmotic energy harvesting. The narrow NH2‐containing window‐cavity channel structures and the rigid backbone of the imidazole moieties in SAMM act as ionic filters and ionic conductors to boost osmotic ion transport with high anion selectivity. Osmotic energy represents a promising energy resource because it is sustainable and environmentally benign. Subnanoscale channels are considered as a competitive platform for generating this blue energy due to their highly selective and ultrafast ion transport. However, fabricating functional subnanochannels capable of high energy output remains challenging. Here, a heterogeneous subnanochannel membrane formed by coating a functionalized self‐assembled metal−organic framework (MOF) monolayer (SAMM) film on a porous anodic aluminum oxide membrane, is reported. The SAMM film, with a thickness of ≈160 nm, is fabricated by self‐assembly of poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐vinylimidazole)‐modified UiO‐66‐NH2 nanoparticles at the water−air interface. In the SAMM, imidazole and NH2 groups provide abundant positive charges, while the angstrom‐scale windows act as ionic filters for selective screening of anions with different hydration diameters. As a result, the heterogeneous membrane exhibits excellent capacity for anion‐selective transport, which contributes to an optimal osmotic power of 6.76 W m−2 under a 100‐fold NaCl gradient, as well as a high Cl−/SO42− selectivity of ≈42.2. Further, the output power is increased to 10.5 W m−2 by methylating imidazole moieties on the MOF surface. This work provides a facile and modular approach to fabricate subnanochannels for enabling highly selective and efficient osmotic energy conversion.

Abstract:Low membrane conductivity originated from a high membrane thickness has long been the "Achilles heel" of the conventional polymeric membrane, greatly hampering the improvement of the output power density in osmotic power generation. Herein, we demonstrate a molecularly-thin two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF) monolayer membrane, featured with ultimate thickness, high pore density, and tight pore size distribution, which performs as a highly efficient osmotic power generator. Despite the large pore size up to 3.8 nm and relatively low surface charge density of 2.2 mC m-2, the monolayer COF membrane exhibits a high osmotic current density of 16.7 kA m-2 and an output power density of 102 W m-2 under 50 times the NaCl salinity gradient (0.5 M/0.01 M). This superior power density could be further improved to 170 W m-2 in the real seawater/river water gradient system. When the large pore size and low surface charge density are considered, this superior performance is not expected. Computational studies further reveal that the ultimate membrane permeability originated from the high membrane porosity, rather than ion selectivity, plays a dominant role in the production of high current density, especially under high salinity. This work provides an alternative strategy to realize improved output power density in ultrapermeable membranes.
