Abstract:It is shown that projectionless C*-algebras that tensorially absorb the Jiang-Su algebra have the property that every element is a limit of products of two nilpotents. This is then used to classify the approximate unitary equivalence classes of positive elements in such C*-algebras using traces.

Abstract:We show that separable, simple, unital C*-algebras with finite decomposition rank absorb the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially. This has a number of consequences for Elliott's program to classify nuclear C*-algebras by their K-theory data. In particular, it completes the classification of C*-algebras associated to uniquely ergodic, smooth, minimal dynamical systems by their ordered K-groups.

Abstract:Using Cuntz semigroup techniques, we characterize when limit traces are dense in the space of all traces on a free ultrapower of a C*-algebra. More generally, we consider density of limit quasitraces on ultraproducts of C*-algebras. Quite unexpectedly, we obtain as an application that every simple C*-algebra that is ( m , n ) -pure in the sense of Winter is already pure. As another application, we provide a partial verification of the first Blackadar–Handelman conjecture on dimension functions. Crucial ingredients in our proof are new Hahn–Banach type separation theorems for noncancellative cones, which in particular apply to the cone of extended-valued traces on a C*-algebra.

Abstract:In this note we state a conjecture that characterizes unital C*-algebras for which the unitary group is amenable as a topological group in the norm topology. We prove the conjecture for simple, separable, stably finite, unital, $\mathcal Z$-stable, UCT C*-algebras with torsionfree K_0 using the progress on the Elliott classification program for nuclear C*-algebras as well as Pestov's study of amenability of gauge groups. Based on work of Kirchberg, we provide a counterexample to a question of Ng, who proposed a different characterization in earlier work.

Abstract:The uncovering of new structure on the Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra of stable rank one leads to several applications: We answer affirmatively, for the class of stable rank one C*-algebras, a conjecture by Blackadar and Handelman on dimension functions, the Global Glimm Halving problem, and the problem of realizing functions on the cone of 2-quasitraces as ranks of Cuntz semigroup elements. We also gain new insights into the comparability properties of positive elements in C*-algebras of stable rank one.

Abstract:The cone of lower semicontinuous traces is studied with a view to its use as an invariant. Its properties include compactness, Hausdorffness, and continuity with respect to inductive limits. A suitable notion of dual cone is given. The cone of lower semicontinuous 2-quasitraces on a (non-exact) C*-algebra is considered as well. These results are applied to the study of the Cuntz semigroup. It is shown that if a C*-algebra absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra, then the subsemigroup of its Cuntz semigroup consisting of the purely non-compact elements is isomorphic to the dual cone of the cone of lower semicontinuous 2-quasitraces. This yields a computation of the Cuntz semigroup for the following two classes of C*-algebras: C*-algebras that absorb the Jiang-Su algebra and have no non-zero simple subquotients, and simple C*-algebras that absorb the Jiang-Su algebra.

Towards a classification of unitary elements of C*-algebras

Abstract:In [6] the author conjectures and partially shows that the Cuntz semigroup classifies unitary elements of unital AF-algebras. We provide a complete proof by addressing the existence part of the conjecture, under a mild adjustment of both domain and codomain of the functor Cu. We also tackle the classification beyond the AF case and more particularly, we look at unitary elements of what we call AH$_1$-algebras. We obtain positive progress as far as the existence part is concern. Nevertheless, we reveal some crucial information needed for the uniqueness part of the classification that the Cuntz semigroup fails to capture.

Abstract:For a skew-symmetrizable cluster algebra ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$ with principal coefficients at $t_{0}$, we prove that each seed $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}_{t}$ of ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$ is uniquely determined by its $C$-matrix, which was proposed by Fomin and Zelevinsky (Compos. Math. 143 (2007), 112–164) as a conjecture. Our proof is based on the fact that the positivity of cluster variables and sign coherence of $c$-vectors hold for ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$, which was actually verified in Gross et al. (Canonical bases for cluster algebras, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 31(2) (2018), 497–608). Further discussion is provided in the sign-skew-symmetric case so as to obtain a weak version of the conjecture in this general case.

Abstract:We classify the unital embeddings of a unital separable nuclear $C^*$-algebra satisfying the universal coefficient theorem into a unital simple separable nuclear $C^*$-algebra that tensorially absorbs the Jiang--Su algebra. This gives a new and essentially self-contained proof of the stably finite case of the unital classification theorem: unital simple separable nuclear $C^*$-algebras that absorb the Jiang--Su algebra tensorially and satisfy the universal coefficient theorem are classified by Elliott's invariant of $K$-theory and traces.

Abstract:We show that a C*-algebra generated by an irreducible representation of a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group satisfies the universal coefficient theorem and has real rank 0. This combines with previous joint work with Gillaspy and McKenney to show these C*-algebras are classified by their Elliott invariants. When we further assume the group is nilpotent we build explicit Cartan subalgebras that are closely related to the group and representation, although the Cartan subalgebras are generally not C*-diagonals.

Abstract:We show that every C*-algebra that is (m,n)-pure in the sense of Winter is already pure, that is, its Cuntz semigroup is almost unperforated and almost divisible. More generally, we show that even weaker comparison and divisibility properties automatically lead to pureness. We use this to show that, under a mild comparison assumption, pureness is automatic for C*-algebras that are either nowhere scattered with real rank zero or stable rank one, or simple, unital, non-elementary, with a unique quasitrace. As an application to the non-simple Toms-Winter conjecture, we show that every C*-algebra with the Global Glimm Property and finite nuclear dimension is pure. It follows that a separable, locally subhomogeneous C*-algebras with stable rank one and topological dimension zero is pure if and only if it is $\mathcal{Z}$-stable, if and only if it is nowhere scattered and has finite nuclear dimension.

Abstract:We construct projective covers of irreducible V -modules in the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules when V is a vertex operator algebra satisfying the following conditions: 1. V is C 1 -cofinite in the sense of Li. 2. There exists a positive integer N such that the differences between the real parts of the lowest conformal weights of irreducible V -modules are bounded by N and such that the associative algebra A N ( V ) is finite dimensional. This result shows that the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules is a finite abelian category over C . Using the existence of projective covers, we prove that if such a vertex operator algebra V also satisfies Condition 3 that irreducible V -modules are R -graded and C 1 -cofinite in the sense of the author, then the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules is closed under operations ⧅ P ( z ) for z ∈ C × . We also prove that other conditions for applying the logarithmic tensor product theory developed by Lepowsky, Zhang and the author hold. Consequently, for such V , this category has a natural structure of braided tensor category. In particular, when V is of positive energy and C 2 -cofinite, Conditions 1–3 are satisfied and thus all the conclusions hold.

Abstract:The uniform tracial completion of a C*-algebra A with compact non-empty trace space T(A) is obtained by completing the unit ball with respect to the uniform 2-seminorm $\|a\|_{2,T(A)}=\sup_{\tau \in T(A)} \tau(a^*a)^{1/2}$. The trace problem asks whether every trace on the uniform tracial completion is the $\|\cdot\|_{2,T(A)}$-continuous extension of a trace on A. We answer this question positively in the case of C*-algebras that tensorially absorb the Jiang-Su algebra, such as those studied in the Elliott classification programme.

Abstract:In this paper, we exhibit two unital, separable, nuclear ${\rm C}^*$-algebras of stable rank one and real rank zero with the same ordered scaled total K-theory, but they are not isomorphic with each other, which forms a counterexample to Elliott Classification Conjecture for real rank zero setting. Thus, we introduce an additional normal condition and give a classification result in terms of total K-theory. For the general setting, with a new invariant -- total Cuntz semigroup \cite{AL}, we classify a large class of ${\rm C}^*$-algebras obtained from extensions. The total Cuntz semigroup, which distinguish the algebras of our counterexample, could possibly classify all the ${\rm C}^*$-algebras of stable rank one and real rank zero.

Abstract:We give an example of an exact, stably finite, simple. separable C*-algebra D which is not isomorphic to its opposite algebra. Moreover, D has the following additional properties. It is stably finite, approximately divisible, has real rank zero and stable rank one, has a unique tracial state, and the order on projections over D is determined by traces. It also absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z, and in fact absorbs the 3^{\infty} UHF algebra. We can also explicitly compute the K-theory of D, namely K_0 (D) = Z[1/3] with the standard order, and K_1 (D) = 0, as well as the Cuntz semigroup of D.
