Abstract:The development of porous composite materials is of great significance for their potentially improved performance over those of individual components and extensive applications in separation, energy storage, and heterogeneous catalysis. Now mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with macroporous melamine foam (MF) have been integrated using a one-pot process, generating a series of MOF/MF composite materials with preserved crystallinity, hierarchical porosity, and increased stability over that of melamine foam. The MOF nanocrystals were threaded by the melamine foam networks, resembling a ball-and-stick model overall. The resulting MOF/MF composite materials were employed as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the epoxidation of cholesteryl esters. Combining the advantages of interpenetrative mesoporous and macroporous structures, the MOF/melamine foam composite has higher dispersibility and more accessibility of catalytic sites, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:Carbon-encapsulated metal–organic framework (MOF) composite is one kind of emerging new catalyst with high efficiency and has gained much attention. However, for this kind of composite catalyst, the key to improving its catalytic activity and durability is to realize the effective dispersion of MOF nanoparticles (NPs) and enhance the interaction between MOF NPs and the carbon matrix, which remain a significant challenge. Herein, ultrafine MOF NPs within multichamber carbon spheres (), for the first time, have been rationally synthesized by a two-step double-solvent strategy for high-performance catalysts. The precise loading of guest MOFs can be achieved by adjusting the multichamber structure and calcination extent of the multichamber polymer (MCP), and the particle size of MOFs can be as low as 13.2 nm. Due to the formation of abundant carbon defects in the pyrolysis process of MCPs, the special structure and synergistic effect make the material exhibit higher catalytic activity and durability. More importantly, this method is universal and can be extended to different MOF systems. Abstract:A robust nanocasting approach is demonstrated to synthesize encapsulated nanoparticles in metal oxides. First, colloidal nanoparticles are encapsulated in a porous polymer matrix. Then, metal oxide precursor is infiltrated, and materials are calcined to form a porous metal oxide network. Various combinations of nanoparticles encapsulated in metal oxide materials can be synthesized, and their surface area and porosity can be tuned using this method. Encapsulation of metal nanoparticles within oxide materials has been shown as an effective strategy to improve activity, selectivity, and stability in several catalytic applications. Several approaches have been proposed to encapsulate nanoparticles, such as forming core‐shell structures, growing ordered structures (zeolites or metal‐organic frameworks) on nanoparticles, or directly depositing support materials on nanoparticles. Here, a general nanocasting method is demonstrated that can produce diverse encapsulated metal@oxide structures with different compositions (Pt, Pd, Rh) and multiple types of oxides (Al2O3, Al2O3‐CeO2, ZrO2, ZnZrOx, In2O3, Mn2O3, TiO2) while controlling the size and dispersion of nanoparticles and the porous structure of the oxide. Metal@polymer structures are first prepared, and then the oxide precursor is infiltrated into such structures and the resulting material is calcined to form the metal@oxide structures. Most Pt@oxides catalysts show similar catalytic activity, demonstrating the availability of surface Pt sites in the encapsulated structures. However, the Pt@Mn2O3 sample showed much higher CO oxidation activity, while also being stable under aging conditions. This work demonstrated a robust nanocasting method to synthesize metal@oxide structures, which can be utilized in catalysis to finely tune metal‐oxide interfaces.

Abstract:Fabrication and modification of few-atom metal clusters and even single atoms in the pores of porous materials for catalysis are highly desired from an atom-efficiency aspect but remain a great challenge. Herein, we propose a facile and efficient strategy for the encapsulation of C-N-decorated Pd sub-nanoclusters (MSNCs)/single atoms (SAs) into MOFs by the confined thermolysis of Pd-based metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) in MOF pores. The obtained hybrids contained both Pd MSNCs (∼0.8 nm) and Pd SAs, which were stabilized by the in situ formed C-N fragments and the confinement effect of MOF pores. Benefiting from the highly exposed Pd atoms and synergistic effect between Pd and C-N fragments, these catalysts exhibited extremely high catalytic activity and stability in various important chemical processes, making them comparable to the most active Pd-based catalysts reported in the literature even under milder reaction conditions. Considering the high tunability of MOPs, this proposed strategy might provide a new toolbox for enriching the family of decorated MSNC/SA catalysts.

Abstract:MOFs and their derivatives are excellent carriers with large specific surface area. Here, we propose a new strategy to engineer a supported-Pt core shell MOF-derived metal oxide catalyst. In this work, ZnCo-glycol microspheres were used as sacrificial templates, and the pre-prepared Pt nanoparticles were modified in MOFs during the in situ surface etching strategy. Compared to the ZnCo-2MI-330 and ZnCo-Pt-330, ZnCo-Pt-2MI-330 presents good catalytic activity (T10=110 °C,T90=123 °C) and excellent stability on CO oxidation reaction. By detailed characterization, ZnCo-Pt-2MI-330 remains the original pore structure of MOFs and provides a larger specific surface area, while the addition of Pt NPs changes the content of active species (the high ratio of Co3+ and active oxygen species) in the metal oxides. More importantly, the strategy effectively improves the noble metal catalysts are apt to lose their activities during the thermal catalytic caused by the serious working environment.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers, featuring crystalline porous structures, have been intensively employed as templates/precursors for the synthesis of diverse porous materials including porous carbons, metal-based compounds (such as metal oxides/carbides/phosphides) and their composites. The large surface area, high porosity and excellent tailorability of MOFs can be well inherited to their derivatives, making MOF-derived porous materials very promising for catalytic applications. Herein, we systematically summarize the versatile synthetic strategies to fabricate MOF-derived porous materials and give an overview on their recent progress on organic heterogeneous catalysis, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. Abstract:Composites incorporating metal nanoparticles (MNPs) within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have broad applications in many fields. However, the controlled spatial distribution of the MNPs within MOFs remains a challenge for addressing key issues in catalysis, for example, the efficiency of catalysts due to the limitation of molecular diffusion within MOF channels. Here we report a facile strategy that enables MNPs to be encapsulated into MOFs with controllable spatial localization by using metal oxide both as support to load MNPs and as a sacrificial template to grow MOFs. This strategy is versatile to a variety of MNPs and MOF crystals. By localizing the encapsulated MNPs closer to the surface of MOFs, the resultant MNPs@MOF composites not only exhibit effective selectivity derived from MOF cavities, but also enhanced catalytic activity due to the spatial regulation of MNPs as close as possible to the MOF surface.

Abstract:Rational design of non-noble metal catalysts with an electrocatalytic activity comparable or even superior to Pt is extremely important for future fuel cell-based renewable energy devices. Herein, we demonstrate a new concept that a metal-organic framework (MOF) can be used as a novel precursor to in situ encapsulate Co@Co3O4@C core@bishell nanoparticles (NPs) into a highly ordered porous carbon matrix (CM) (denoted as Co@Co3O4@C-CM). The central cobalt ions from the MOF are used as a metal source to produce Co metal cores, which are later transformed into a fancy Co@Co3O4 nanostructure via a controlled oxidation. The most notable feature of our Co@Co3O4@C-CM is that the highly ordered CM can provide much better transport pathways than the disordered pure MOF derived nanostructure that can facilitate the mass transport of O-2 and an electrolyte. As a result, the well-designed Co@Co3O4@C-CM derived from the MOF shows almost identical activity but superior stability and methanol tolerance for the ORR relative to the commercial Pt/C in alkaline medium. Our work reports a novel Co@Co3O4@C nanostructure from a MOF for the first time and also reveals the important role of the introduction of a highly ordered carbon matrix into the MOF derived catalyst in enhancing the ORR activity and stability. To the best of our knowledge, the Co@Co3O4@C-CM is the most efficient non-noble metal nanocatalyst ever reported for the ORR.

Abstract:Incorporating metal nanoparticles (MNPs) inside metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrates superior catalytic properties in numerous reactions; however, the size and distribution of MNPs could not be well controlled, resulting in low product selectivity in catalysis by undergoing different catalytic reaction pathways. We report herein a facile strategy for integrating lattice-mismatched MOFs together to fabricate homogeneously distributed “dual-MOFs,” which are the ideal precursors for the preparation of MNPs@MOFs with unique catalytic properties. As a proof of concept, we successfully synthesize a dual-MOF HKUST-1/ZIF-8 for in situ creation of redox-active Cu NPs inside hierarchical porous ZIF-8 under controlled pyrolytic conditions. Combining the advantages of size-tunable Cu NPs in the molecular sieving matrix of ZIF-8, Cu@ZIF-8 demonstrates high activity and selectivity for transformation of alkynes into alkenes without overhydrogenation, which surpasses most of the catalysts in the literature. Therefore, this work paves a new pathway for developing highly efficient and selective heterogeneous catalysts to produce highly value-added chemicals.

A Generalized Strategy for the Ultrafast Encapsulation of Metal Oxide Nanoclusters into Zeolites

Abstract:Encapsulating metal oxide nanoclusters into zeolites creates bifunctional catalysts that combine the high activity of metal oxide nanoclusters and unique shape selectivity of zeolites. The one-pot encapsulation in the process of zeolite synthesis is preferable for its high efficiency; however, this method is largely hindered by the mismatch in the time scale between the fast precipitation of metal species and the slow crystallization of zeolites. We herein put forward a generalized strategy to address the mismatch issue, which can lead to the ultrafast, one-pot encapsulation of metal oxide nanoclusters into zeolites in just a few minutes. The encapsulation of nanoclusters of different metal oxides, including CuO, ZnO, NiO and CoO, into a pure-silica MFI zeolite (silicalite-1) was used to prove the concept. Taking the CuO case as an example, the factors influencing the ultrafast encapsulation, such as synthesis temperature, aging time and precursor composition, were systematically examined. The CuO@silicalite-1 zeolite synthesized via the ultrafast encapsulation method showed satisfactorily high activity and stability in the dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde. On the basis of the ultrafast encapsulation, we further established the continuous-flow encapsulation with a high space-time yield, which offers a promising route for the large-scale preparation of this class of catalysts. We herein put forward a generalized synthesis strategy which can lead to the ultrafast, one-pot encapsulation of metal oxide nanoclusters into zeolites in just a few minutes.

Abstract:The pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an ingenious way to synthesize carbon-based materials with unique morphology for various applications including electrocatalysis. In this work, we reported a facile morphology regulation strategy for the synthesis of a spherical superstructure of MOF nanosheets. The use of metal hydroxide nanosheets on Zn particles as precursors/templates allowed MOFs with general polyhedron shape to form nanosheets and assemble into a spherical superstructure in the ligand solution. Further, a hollow spherical superstructure of carbon nanosheets decorated with metal-based nanoparticles was fabricated through the pyrolysis of MOF nanosheet superstructures at 950 °C, where the substrate/template Zn particle cores were evaporated away. The obtained composites possess carbon-based superstructures with abundant mesopores and metal-based nanoparticles with rich alloy/oxide interfaces. These features endow this MOF-derived carbon-based material with outstanding bifunctional activity for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions and great performances in Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:Nanoparticles@metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) composites have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to the prominent selective catalytic activity. However, it is highly desirable to develop a simple and universal way to settle the trade-off between the catalytic efficiency and selectivity. Herein, by employing the thermal instability of inherent defects, hierarchically porous Pt@UiO-66-NH2 , Pt@UiO-66, Pt@ZIF-8, and Au@ZIF-8 are successfully constructed after annealing at an appropriate temperature, respectively. The generated mesopores in the MOFs can be located around the external nanoparticle to retain the MOF shell for catalytic selectivity. Finally, when tested in olefin hydrogenation, Pt@UiO-66-NH2 shows significantly improved catalytic rate and enhanced dynamic selectivity.

Abstract:Nanostructured mixed metal oxides with porous hollow-interior structure hold great promise in environmental-related catalysis, owing to their excellent catalytic properties. However, facile fabrication of such mesoporous architecture is still challenging. Here, by using a transient aerosol-assisted self-assembly (AASA) method, we synthesized the Co3O4-Al2O3 mesoporous hollow spheres (MHS) composed of thermally stable Co3O4 nanoparticles partially anchored to amorphous interfacial Al2O3. The as-prepared Co3O4-Al2O3 nanocomposites displayed distinct features of large pore volume and stable assembled morphology, and thus showed significant advantages in mass transfer and redox behavior. For Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, a very important reaction in fuel production, the Co3O4-Al2O3 MHS exhibited significant catalytic performance in conversion, selectivity and stability for the desired gasoline products. Therefore, we provide a facile and controlled approach towards the preparation of mesoporous hollow materials to achieve novel mixed metal oxide nanocatalysts those are good candidates in energy-production application. Abstract:Creating free-access active sites and regulating their interaction with substrates are crucial for efficient catalysis, yet remain a grand challenge. Herein, naked Pd nanoparticles (NPs) have been encapsulated in a metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-101-NH2, to afford Pd@MIL-101-NH2. The hydrophobic perfluoroalkyls were post-synthetically modified onto -NH2 group to yield Pd@MIL-101-Fx (x = 3, 5, 7, 11, 15), which engineer the MOF pore walls to regulate Pd surrounding microenvironment and interaction with substrates. As a result, both the dehydrogenation coupling of organosilane and hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzenes show that their activity and selectivity can be greatly promoted upon hydrophobic modification due to the favorable substrate enrichment and regulated interactions between Pd and the modified MOF hosts, far surpassing the traditional supported or surfactant-protected Pd NPs. We envision metal NPs@MOF composites would be an ideal platform integrating the inherent activity of well-accessible metal sites with engineered microenvironment via readily tunable MOFs.

Abstract:The synthesis of ultrafine, uniform, well-dispersed functional nanoparticles (NPs) under mild conditions in a controlled manner remains a great challenge. In biological systems, a well-defined biomineralization process is exploited, in which the control over NPs' size, shape and distribution is temporally and spatially regulated by a variety of biomolecules in a confined space. Inspired by this, we embedded proteins into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and explored a novel approach to synthesize metallic NPs by taking the synergy of protein-induced biomineralization process and space-confined effect of MOFs. The generation and growth of ultrafine metal NPs (Ag or Au) was induced by the entrapped lysozyme molecules and confined by the ZIF-8 pores. Due to the narrow size distribution and homogeneous spatial distribution of metal NPs, the as-synthesized NPs exhibit remarkably elevated catalytic activity. These findings demonstrate that MOFs can be loaded with specific proteins to selectively deposit inorganic NPs via biomimetic mineralization and these novel kinds of nanohybrid materials may find applications in catalysis, sensing and optics.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have flourished as a library of promising precursors for synthesizing carbon-supported metal catalysts by pyrolysis, but it is extremely difficult to simultaneously achieve a high metal loading and an ultrasmall size, particularly for non-noble metal (Fe, Co, Ni, etc.) that are highly active and have a strong tendency to coarsen. Here, we report a general strategy for controllable synthesize thermodynamically metastable sub-3 nm non-noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) with ultrahigh metal loading up to 41.0 wt% (12.8 at.%) by rapid pyrolysis of MOF (e.g., ~1000°C in 0.3 s), at least four-fold higher than the reported strategy where ultrasmall NPs were obtained but with a significant sacrifice of metal loading (usually less than 10 wt.%). Furthermore, we found that the formation of metal NPs during high-temperature pulse agrees with the LaMer model (sigmoidal coarsening kinetics), in which rapid pyrolysis triggers only the initial nucleation and avoids Ostwald ripening or further coalescence. We also demonstrate the generality of our strategy in synthesizing other MOF-derived ultrasmall NPs, including non-noble metal NPs (Ni), metallic compound (CoS2), and alloy (CoPd). As a demonstration, the obtained CoPd-based catalyst showed high activity and robust stability during prolonged catalytic reactions. Therefore, our strategy and mechanistic insights enable the rational design and controlled synthesis of advanced catalysts with a good balance between ultrasmall size and a high metal loading, from more than 100,000 types of MOFs.

Abstract:The anchor of functional materials on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanosheets to precisely construct fascinated heterostructures for electrocatalysis is highly promising but challenging owing to the different interfacial thermodynamics and nucleation kinetics. In this work, we design and synthesize ultrafine metal oxides nanoparticles (NPs) homogenously distributed on cobalt-based MOF (Co-MOF) nanosheets for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by a facile solvothermal reaction and subsequent partially controlled pyrolysis. The ultrafine Co3O4 NPs with a particle size of about 1.5 nm can be obtained from the dispersed elemental Co in Co-MOF and uniformly generated on the surface of the MOF, which is crucial for the formation of the unique heterostructure. The well-designed Co-MOF-350 exhibits an efficient electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential of 239 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 63 mV dec−1, and an outstanding catalytic stability for OER, much superior to the pure Co-MOF and Co3O4 electrocatalyst. The intriguing OER performance mainly originates from the desirable combination of the abundant active sites, the extended electron transport channel between ultrafine metal oxides and Co-MOF nanosheets. More importantly, the work will help to design novel heteroarchitectured MOFs-based composites as efficient and robust electrocatalysts for practical applications.

Ultrasmall Au Nanoparticles Embedded In 2d Mixed-Ligand Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets Exhibiting Highly Efficient And Size-Selective Catalysis

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold great promise as porous matrixes for the incorporation of Au nanoparticles (NPs) because of their rationally designed framework structures. Unfortunately, the as-synthesized bulk MOFs usually vary in the range of micrometer or sub-micrometer size, rendering extremely longer molecular diffusion distance of chemical species. 2D MOF nanosheets with extended lateral dimensions and nanometer thickness are expected to implement fast kinetics and effectively lower mass-transfer barriers during embedding Au NPs process and sequential catalytic reactions. In this study, a novel 2D nanosheet of mixed-ligand Ni(II) MOF (referred to NMOF-Ni) is successfully fabricated. With the merits of well-defined micropores and functional oxygen-decorated inner walls, the incorporation of quite monodisperse ultrasmall Au nanoparticles of around 1 nm into NMOF-Ni has been achieved for the first time. The resulting nanocomposites exhibit remarkable catalytic performance and good size selectivity toward aqueous reduction reactions of nitrophenol, taking advantage of ultrasmall Au and 2D nanosheet nature, as well as the intact microporosity of host matrix. The present encouraging findings might shed light on new ways to develop high-performance heterogeneous catalysts by using of 2D MOF nanosheets with functional cavities as hosts for homogeneous distribution of ultrasmall Au NPs.
General Immobilization of Ultrafine Alloyed Nanoparticles within Metal–Organic Frameworks with High Loadings for Advanced Synergetic Catalysis

Abstract:The development of a general synthesis approach for creating fine alloyed nanoparticles (NPs) in the pores of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) shows great promise for advanced synergetic catalysis but has not been realized so far. Herein, for the first time we proposed a facile and general strategy to immobilize ultrafine alloyed NPs within the pores of an MOF by the galvanic replacement of transition-metal NPs (e.g., Cu, Co, and Ni) with noble-metal ions (e.g., Pd, Ru, and Pt) under high-intensity ultrasound irradiation. Nine types of bimetallic alloyed NPs of base and noble metals were successfully prepared and immobilized in the pores of MIL-101 as a model host, which showed highly dispersed and well-alloyed properties with average particle sizes ranging from 1.1 to 2.2 nm and high loadings of up to 10.4 wt %. Benefiting from the ultrafine particle size and high dispersity of Cu-Pd NPs and especially the positive synergy between Cu and Pd metals, the optimized Cu-Pd@MIL-101 exhibited an extremely high activity for the homocoupling reaction of phenylacetylene under unprecedented base- and additive-free conditions and room temperature, affording at least 19 times higher yield (98%) of 1,4-diphenylbuta-1,3-diyne than its monometallic counterparts. This general strategy for preparing various MOF-immobilized alloyed NPs potentially paves the way for the development of highly active metal catalysts for a variety of reactions.
