Abstract:Human beings can be proactive and engaged or, alternatively, passive and alienated, largely as a function of the social conditions in which they develop and function. Accordingly, research guided by self-determination theory has focused on the social-contextual conditions that facilitate versus forestall the natural processes of self-motivation and healthy psychological development. Specifically, factors have been examined that enhance versus undermine intrinsic motivation, self-regulation, and well-being. The findings have led to the postulate of three innate psychological needs--competence, autonomy, and relatedness--which when satisfied yield enhanced self-motivation and mental health and when thwarted lead to diminished motivation and well-being. Also considered is the significance of these psychological needs and processes within domains such as health care, education, work, sport, religion, and psychotherapy.

The process of personality integration and development is that of self-determination. SDT is applied in extensive domains such as education, health care, sports and organization. Finally, research on SDT in China is reviewed, and further steps for future research are suggested.

Abstract:Early in this century, most empirically oriented psychologists believed that all motivation was based in the physiology of a set of non-nervous system tissue needs. The theories of that era reflected this belief and used it in an attempt to explain an increasing number of phenomena. It was not until the 1950s that it became irrefutably clear that much of human motivation is based not in these drives, but rather in a set of innate psychological needs. Their physiological basis is less understood; and as concepts, these needs lend themselves more easily to psycho logical than to physiological theorizing. The convergence of evidence from a variety of scholarly efforts suggests that there are three such needs: self-determination, competence, and interpersonal relatedness. This book is primarily about self-determination and competence (with particular emphasis on the former), and about the processes and structures that relate to these needs. The need for interpersonal relat edness, while no less important, remains to be explored, and the findings from those explorations will need to be integrated with the present theory to develop a broad, organismic theory of human motivation. Thus far, we have articulated self-determination theory, which is offered as a working theory-a theory in the making. To stimulate the research that will allow it to evolve further, we have stated self-determination theory in the form of minitheories that relate to more circumscribed domains, and we have developed paradigms for testing predictions from the various minitheories.

Abstract:Self-determination theory (SDT) is a still rapidly expanding framework of basic and applied research, underpinned by a global network of scholars and practitioners. Herein, we focus on one feature of SDT that helps explain its continued growth—the fact that it is a truly human science that takes into consideration our attributes as persons, including our capacities for awareness and self-regulation, as well as vulnerabilities to defensiveness and control. Within SDT, these human capacities are studied using diverse methods and across all subdisciplines of psychology. In this review, we focus particularly on people’s capacity for autonomy as it applies to their individual functioning, interpersonal relationships, and societal interactions. If there is a core legacy to SDT, it is one of representing a generative and philosophically coherent framework based on a convergent network of empirical evidence with relevance across domains and cultures and to our basic experiences and concerns as humans.

Abstract:Self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985, 1991), when applied to the realm of education, is concerned primarily with promoting in students an interest in learning, a valuing of education, and a confidence in their own capacities and attributes. These outcomes are manifestations of being intrinsically motivated and internalizing values and regulatory processes. Research suggests that these processes result in high-quality learning and conceptual understanding, as well as enhanced personal growth and adjustment. In this article we also describe social-contextual factors that nurture intrinsic motivation and promote internalization, leading to the desired educational outcomes.

Abstract:Self-determination theory (SDT) is a macro theory of human motivation that evolved from research on intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and expanded to include research on work organizations and other domains of life. We discuss SDT research relevant to the workplace, focusing on (a) the distinction between autonomous motivation (i.e., intrinsic motivation and fully internalized extrinsic motivation) and controlled motivation (i.e., externally and internally controlled extrinsic motivation), as well as (b) the postulate that all employees have three basic psychological needs—for competence, autonomy, and relatedness—the satisfaction of which promotes autonomous motivation, high-quality performance, and wellness. Research in work organizations has tended to take the perspectives of either the employees (i.e., their well-being) or the owners (i.e., their profits). SDT provides the concepts that guide the creation of policies, practices, and environments that promote both wellness and high-quality performance. We examine the relations of SDT to transformational leadership, job characteristics, justice, and compensation approaches.

Abstract:Self-determination theory (SDT) maintains that an understanding of human motivation requires a consideration of innate psychological needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. We discuss the SDT concept of needs as it relates to previous need theories, emphasizing that needs specify the necessary conditions for psychological growth, integrity, and well-being. This concept of needs leads to the hypotheses that different regulatory processes underlying goal pursuits are differentially associated with effective functioning and well-being and also that different goal contents have different relations to the quality of behavior and mental health, specifically because different regulatory processes and different goal contents are associated with differing degrees of need satisfaction. Social contexts and individual differences that support satisfaction of the basic needs facilitate natural growth processes including intrinsically motivated behavior and integration of extrinsic motivations, whereas those that forestall autonomy, competence, or relatedness are associated with poorer motivation, performance, and well-being. We also discuss the relation of the psychological needs to cultural values, evolutionary processes, and other contemporary motivation theories.

Abstract:The concepts of self-regulation and autonomy are examined within an organizational framework. We begin by retracing the historical origins of the organizational viewpoint in early debates within the field of biology between vitalists and reductionists, from which the construct of self-regulation emerged. We then consider human autonomy as an evolved behavioral, developmental, and experiential phenomenon that operates at both neurobiological and psychological levels and requires very specific supports within higher order social organizations. We contrast autonomy or true self-regulation with controlling regulation (a nonautonomous form of intentional behavior) in phenomenological and functional terms, and we relate the forms of regulation to the developmental processes of intrinsic motivation and internalization. Subsequently, we describe how self-regulation versus control may be characterized by distinct neurobiological underpinnings, and we speculate about some of the adaptive advantages that may underlie the evolution of autonomy. Throughout, we argue that disturbances of autonomy, which have both biological and psychological etiologies, are central to many forms of psychopathology and social alienation.

Abstract:Self-determination theory can be viewed as a theory of optimal relationship development and functioning. We examine the concept of self that is employed in self-determination theory and explain how its unique definition allows an important and novel characterization of investing one's "self" in romantic relationships. A self-determined perspective on romantic relationships integrates several theories on romantic relationship development, but also goes beyond them by explicitly articulating the personality, developmental, and situational factors that facilitate optimal self-investment and relational functioning. Self-determination promotes openness rather than defensiveness and facilitates perspective-taking, authenticity, and support of close others. The dyadic context of romantic relationships affords great opportunity for theoretical development and integration of self-determination theory with current theories of interdependence and relational well-being.

Abstract:<p><em>Self-determination theory</em> (SDT) is a broad framework for understanding factors that facilitate or undermine intrinsic motivation, autonomous extrinsic motivation, and psychological wellness, all issues of direct relevance to educational settings. We review research from SDT showing that both intrinsic motivation and well-internalized (and thus autonomous) forms of extrinsic motivation predict an array of positive outcomes across varied educational levels and cultural contexts and are enhanced by supports for students' basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Findings also show a dynamic link between teacher and student motivation, as teachers are themselves impacted and constrained by controlling mandates, institutional pressures, and leadership styles. Ironically, despite substantial evidence for the importance of psychological need satisfactions in learning contexts, many current educational policies and practices around the globe remain anchored in traditional motivational models that fail to support students' and teachers' needs, a knowledge versus policy gap we should aspire to close.</p>

Abstract:The essential content of human self-determination is defined in the problematic field of four basic theoretical approaches: cultural-historical, axio-psychological, humanistic-existential and deed-cyclical. Among the fundamental signs of this phenomenon, it was singled out a person’s own activity on the way to self-realization, their competence in the space of values and meanings, individual capacity and ability for creativity and self-transformation, personal striving for self-actualization, conscious goal-setting of here-existence, valuable orientation to the future with regard to the present, full awareness of the meaning of one’s life and understanding of one’s involvement in the world. The conceptual basis of the cultural-historical approach to understanding the interrelationships between the vita-cultural development of society and the self-determination of a separate person at a certain stage of their ontogenesis has been rethought. In particular, self-determination is interpreted in the context of the subject’s active mastery of ethno-national experience and is considered as a self-determined meaningful psychosocial formation caused by social rules and regulations and personally appropriated as its life guidelines. The analysis of self-determination from the standpoint of canonical psychology caused the justification of it as an internal act that begins in a certain situation, is determined by prosocial motivation, which is realized in an action deployed in time and space and ends with a reflection process. Cognition, constructing and creating oneself as an inspired personality is argued to be significant for understanding the essence of deed self-determination. The achievements of axiopsychological approach are reflected, which made it possible to characterize the self-determination of personality as a result of the development of their value-meaning sphere, that is, axiogenesis, the trajectory of which unfolds from the awareness of the motive associated with the value of truth, goodness, beauty, and continues while finding an answer to the main question «For what?». The ability to self-determination is analyzed in an ascending perspective, namely from the levels of the individual as a bearer of instinctive activity and the person as a significant factor of purposeful objective activity to the stages of the personality’s formation with a formed valuable consciousness and a developed ability for moral action and individuality, which creatively enriches the existing socio-cultural practice and up to the highest level – the human-universum. It has been analyzed the achievement of humanistic-existential approach that argues for the realization of the person’s need for self-actualization, self-realization, and self-determination in the context of the deployment of the essential forces of a person, finding and embodying the meaning of life as a subject, author, and executor of their own project, conscious and responsible resolution of epistemological and ontological contradictions of one’s own existence and independent choice of the method of deed here-existence. The main mechanism of self-actualization, self-realization, and self-fulfillment of Self-concept is determined the act of self-determination in the unity of its situational, motivational, actional, and reflective components. Self-determination in the format of action-cyclical approach is highlighted, which enabled the cognition of this phenomenon as the subject’s realization of their own vocation, which is based on a comprehensive understanding of the significance and expediency of using realized specific meanings and personified senses. Another aspect of self-determination is accented on person taking an active position in relation to vita-cultural values and filling with content the social life. In addition, the development of self-determination is revealed as a transition from cognitive to emotional-evaluative, then to deed-creative and finally to spontaneous-spiritual components, which developmentally fill the inner world of a person with subject, personal, individual and universum potential. As a result, the stages of a person’s deed self-determination are outlined – from pragmatic-situational to social-motivational and then to existential-active and spiritual-post-active. The deployment of the last ones is conceptualized as situational behavior, social action, deed realization of one’s own values and meanings, and reflection of one’s own thinking-activity. Therefore, as a result of the conducted theoretical research, the full deed cycle of human self-determination is substantiated, which unfolds from pragmatic motives in the direction of acceptance and mastery of socially significant values, manifests itself in the choice of relevant reference points in one’s own value-meaning sphere of sense-life, is realized in acts of deed self-creation, and reaches a perfect valuable ideal and communication with the transcendent and causes the achievement by a person the spiritual degree of self-determination, self-fulfillment and self-realization.

Abstract:The Problem There has been a “Copernican turn” in approaches to motivation and management: The focus in human resource development (HRD) and management circles today is no longer on how companies can motivate or incentivize employees from the outside, but instead on how they can effectively foster and support the high-quality motivation that comes from within employees. Developing affective commitment and intrinsic motivation is highlighted as a key to organizational success and employee satisfaction. The Solution In this article, we review our applications of self-determination theory (SDT; Ryan & Deci, 2017) concerning how organizations can both assess and build a culture of high-quality motivation. We review a continuum of types of motivation in the workplace that range from passive or controlled compliance to personal valuing of and intrinsic interest in one’s work. We then discuss how support for employees’ basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness leads to these higher quality types of motivation. Evidence shows that enhanced need satisfaction can come from managerial climate, job design, and well-crafted compensation strategies, as well as being influenced by the perceived mission of the company. A focus on basic needs provides a practical basis for leveraging positive change and achieving goals from talent retention to workplace wellness. The Stakeholders This article was written to help both researchers and practitioners in HRD (i.e., organizational leaders, human resource professionals, managers) learn the basic principles and applications of SDT as a means of unlocking a more practical and actionable model for engagement and motivation. This review not only translates SDT into practice, opening opportunity for collaboration between researchers and practitioners, but also provides meaningful insight into sustained employee motivation and engagement, job satisfaction, and productivity.

Abstract:In this article we suggest that events and contexts relevant to the initiation and regulation of intentional behavior can function either to support autonomy (i.e., to promote choice) or to control behavior (i.e., to pressure one toward specific outcomes). Research herein reviewed indicates that this distinction is relevant to specific external events and to general interpersonal contexts as well as to specific internal events and to general personality orientations. That is, the distinction is relevant whether one's analysis focuses on social psychological variables or on personality variables. The research review details those contextual and person factors that tend to promote autonomy and those that tend to control. Furthermore, it shows that autonomy support has generally been associated with more intrinsic motivation, greater interest, less pressure and tension, more creativity, more cognitive flexibility, better conceptual learning, a more positive emotional tone, higher self-esteem, more trust, greater persistence of behavior change, and better physical and psychological health than has control. Also, these results have converged across different assessment procedures, different research methods, and different subject populations. On the basis of these results, we present an organismic perspective in which we argue that the regulation of intentional behavior varies along a continuum from autonomous (i.e., self-determined) to controlled. The relation of this organismic perspective to historical developments in empirical psychology is discussed, with a particular emphasis on its implications for the study of social psychology and personality.

Abstract:This article is a review of the Self-determination theory (SDT) of Motivation. The theory identifies motivation as a continuum ranging from amotivation to extrinsic motivation and finally to intrinsic motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Intrinsic motivation, thought of as the highest form of motivation satisfying the innate psychological needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. These psychological needs are given as a prototype of self-determined behavior and activity. The theory suggests that extrinsic motivated behaviors can vary in the extent to which they represent Self-determination, ranging from the lowest type of external regulation motivation to the highest type of integrated motivation. In this review I wish to present the SDT theory of motivation and to argue that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation must be reconsidered. Although I acknowledge the positive effects of intrinsic motivation I urge educators and researchers to consider the benefits of extrinsic motivation. I critically examine the evidence for and against the model, discuss its limitations, and identify critical gaps for future research.

Abstract:According to self-determination theory (SDT; Ryan and Deci, Am Psychol 55:68–78, 2000), both why people act (e.g., from autonomy or control) and what they choose to do (e.g., pursuing intrinsic versus extrinsic goals) predict the overall quality of their living. When the reason “why” one acts is volitional and self-endorsed and “what” one pursues is more intrinsically oriented (e.g., personal growth, community contribution) one is more likely to experience overall wellness. In this chapter, we discuss how mindfulness, or open awareness of what is occurring in the moment (Brown and Ryan, J Personal Soc Psychol 84:822–848, 2003), supports more autonomous forms of self-regulation and more intrinsic versus extrinsic goal selection, supplying an important “how” of eudaimonic, or meaningful and satisfying, living. To show these links we first present a brief overview of SDT, then delineate the construct mindfulness, and review evidence of how mindfulness relates to both the regulatory processes through which behaviors are enacted, and the content of goals that individuals pursue.

Abstract:This article summarizes the history, current status, and future directions of self-determination research across the globe, with a focus on applications to the education of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their transition from school to adult life. Research on the development, implementation, and outcomes of self-determination assessments and interventions is explored. Causal Agency Theory, a theoretical framework for understanding the development of self-determination as a psychological construct, is reviewed, along with research on the importance of self-determination for inclusion, psychological growth, and overall well-being. Specific approaches, models, and perspectives for addressing the support needs of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, particularly during transitions, are discussed. Assessment and intervention aligned with Causal Agency Theory, including the Self-Determination Inventory and the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction, are introduced. Future directions and emerging areas of research are summarized, including issues related to cultural validity, integration of strengths-based approaches, emerging technologies, and systemic changes in schools and communities.

Current Directions in Psychological Science

Abstract:Mindfulness and motivation are both highly researched topics of great consequence for individual and social wellness. Using the lens of self-determination theory, we review evidence indicating that mindfulness is differentially related to different types of motivations, playing a facilitating role for highly autonomous forms of motivation, but not for externally controlled or introjected (self-controlling) forms of motivation. A key contribution of this review is our contention that mindfulness confers a range of intra- and interindividual benefits (e.g., well-being and prosociality) in part through its relation to autonomous motivations, a claim for which we outline preliminary evidence. Finally, we discuss how future research connecting mindfulness and motivation is important for both fields of study, for applied practices in areas such as psychotherapy and business, and for enhancing understanding of the processes underlying human wellness.

Abstract:When people experience a near-death or life-threatening incident, they sometimes report an altered state of consciousness in which they have the perception of being out of or away from their physical body. During such an experience these individuals at times have the impression of encountering a spiritual personage who offers them a choice to stay or return to their physical life and/or attempts to motivate them to willingly do so, sometimes conflicting with a simultaneous desire to stay in that altered state of consciousness they perceive as the afterlife. This paper discusses how self-determination theory (SDT) is relevant to this process by meeting the experient's three basic psychological needs for relatedness, competence, and autonomy, resulting in various degrees of effectiveness. It concludes with a postulation that by doing so it may foster a continuing intrinsic motivation to live life well, resulting in a greater overall condition of psychological wellbeing.
