Abstract:Four A2B cobalt corrole complexes 1‐4 appending two methoxy or hydroxyl groups on the 10‐meso phenyl group had been synthesized. Four cobalt corroles showed high elecrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the organic phase and in the aqueous phase. The hydrogen evolution pathway was EECEC when using acetic acid as proton source. When trifluoroacetic acid was used as proton source, the hydrogen evolution route via EECEC or EECC depending on the concentration of trifluoroacetic acid. Cobalt corrole 4 showed the best HER performance with the kobs of 122.68 s‐1 in organic phase and the TOF of 832.2 h‐1 in aqueous phase respectively. The results suggested the phenyl hydroxyl group at the cobalt corrole peripheral may act as the proton relay group in HER and the o‐hydroxyl of phenyl was better than m‐ hydroxyl for proton relay.

Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Production by CN‐ substituted Cobalt Triaryl Corroles

Abstract:Four cobalt corrole complexes bearing 0–3 cyano groups on the para-position of the three meso-phenyl rings of the macrocycle were synthesized, characterized and applied for electrocatalytic H2 production under both organic solvent and neutral aqueous media. Each of the complexes is an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen production at the potential of the Co (II/I) couple, with turnover frequencies ranging from 40 to 400 s−1 in 18 mM TFA and TsOH. In our study, the reaction path and reaction rate are affected by both the proton source and the substituent. In organic solvent, the catalysis may undergo two competing catalytic routes (EECC and ECEC pathway). The rate of catalysis can be improved remarkably by increasing the number of cyano-substituents. For the three cyano-substituents complex 4, TOF of 381 s−1 is obtained in low concentrations of p-toluenesulfonic acid (TsOH) which are 9 times than the unsubstituted complex 1. Complex 4 is also an efficient electrocatalyst for HER in neutral aqueous systems, the turnover number (TON) of 1675 and Faraday efficiency of 98% has been observed in aqueous medium. This work can provide some evidence for the influence of cyano-substituent on corrole for HER.

Abstract:It is known that the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can be promoted by the presence of proton relay groups neighboring a catalytic metal center. This work reports the synthesis of two new Co(III) corroles (2 and 3) with hangman proton relay groups for the electrocatalytic HER. When using trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as a proton source, complexes 2 and 3 exhibited turnover frequencies (TOFs) of 219.36 s(-1) and 199.57 s(-1), respectively. The catalytic HER undergoes via the EECEC or EECC pathway (E: electron transfer; C: charge transfer) depending on the acidity and concentration of the proton source. Moreover, complex 2 and 3 also showed good HER activity in aqueous media with Faraday efficiencies (FEs) of 93.6% and 89.2% respectively.

Abstract:5,15‐bis(perfluorophenyl)‐10‐(4‐carboxyphenyl) corrole and its Co(III), Mn(III), and Cu(III) corrole complexes were synthesized. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of these metal corrole complexes was investigated using different proton sources (AcOH, trifluoroacetic acid, and TsOH) in an organic dimethylformamide solvent. The electrocatalytic HER may proceed through EECC, EECEC, or EEECEC pathways (where E represents electron transfer and C represents proton binding) depending on the acidity and concentration of the proton source used. The Co corrole complex exhibits remarkable hydrogen production performance, achieving a turnover frequency of 201 s−1 and a catalytic efficiency of 1.00. The examined metal corrole complexes also exhibit good HER activity in aqueous solution, with their catalytic activity following an order of 1‐Co > 1‐Cu > 1‐Mn in both organic and aqueous phases.

Abstract:A new cobalt 5,15-bis(perfluorophenyl)-10-(4-N-(triphenylphosphoranylidene)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl) corrole complex (Co-BPNC-PPh 3 ) containing –N=PPh 3 group has been prepared by Staudinger reaction and characterized by the single-crystal X-ray structure determination. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of Co-BPNC-PPh 3 by using acetic acid (AcOH), trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and p -toluenesulfonic acid (TsOH) as proton sources in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent had been investigated. The turn-over frequency (TOF) value of Co-BPNC-PPh 3 was observed 450 h −1 at an overpotential of 838 mV in neutral aqueous solution, showing excellent electrocatalytic HER activity. This Co-BPNC-PPh 3 exhibited excellent durability and stability in the 5-hours electrolysis. Its activity is also better than cobalt 5, 10, 15-(tris-pentatfulorophenyl) corrole (Co-TPFC-PPh 3 ), which may be ascribed to the –N=PPh 3 proton relay effect in the electrocatalytic HER.

Abstract:The study of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by non−noble transition metals is of great significance for the production of hydrogen energy. In this work, a new 5,15−bis−(pentafluorophenyl)−10−[4−(1H−imidazole) phenyl]−corrole and its metal complexes (metal = Co, Cu, Fe) were synthesized and used for electrocatalyzed HER in DMF organic solvent and aqueous media. The prepared cobalt corrole showed the best catalytic performance in both media. Its turnover frequency (TOF) and catalytic efficiency (C.E) could reach 265 s−1 and 1.04 when TsOH was used as the proton source in a DMF solvent. In aqueous media, its TOF could also reach 405 h−1. The catalytic HER may go through an EECEC or ECEC (E: electron transfer, C: chemical step) pathway for these catalysts, depending on the acidity and concentration of the proton source. The present work successfully demonstrates that imidazole at a meso−phenyl group may improve the electrocatalytic HER activity of transition metal corroles.

Abstract:The construction of efficient pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts remain enormous challenges for hydrogen production from water electrolysis. Herein, we reported a HER electrocatalyst composed of cobalt-ruthenium alloy nanoparticles with the synergy of pyridinic N (CoRu/NC-700). CoRu/NC-700 exhibits excellent HER performance and stability in acidic, alkaline and neutral media, and can reach 10 mA cm−2 with overpotential of only 6, 10 and 30 mV, respectively. Especially in alkaline and acidic media, overpotential of only 217 and 227 mV are required to achieve 1000 mA cm−2, respectively, which is of great significance for industrialized hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water. KSCN and H3PO4 poisoning experiments prove that such high HER activity is attributed to the synergistic enhancement effect of pyridinic N on CoRu nanoparticles. This work will lay the foundation for the designing and development of novel and efficient pH-universal HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Six cobalt and manganese corrole complexes were synthesized and examined as single-site catalysts for water splitting. The simple cobalt corrole [Co(tpfc)(py)(2)] (1, tpfc = 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl) corrole, py = pyridine) catalyzed both water oxidation and proton reduction efficiently. By coating complex 1 onto indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, the turnover frequency for electrocatalytic water oxidation was 0.20 s(-1) at 1.4 V (vs. Ag/AgCl, pH = 7), and it was 1010 s(-1) for proton reduction at -1.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl, pH = 0.5). The stability of 1 for catalytic oxygen evolution and hydrogen production was evaluated by electrochemical, UV-vis and mass measurements, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), which confirmed that 1 was the real molecular catalyst. Titration and UV-vis experiments showed that the pyridine group on Co dissociated at the beginning of catalysis, which was critical to subsequent activation of water. A proton-coupled electron transfer process was involved based on the pH dependence of the water oxidation reaction catalyzed by 1. As for manganese corroles 2-6, although their oxidizing powers were comparable to that of 1, they were not as stable as 1 and underwent decomposition at the electrode. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that water oxidation by 1 was feasible through a proposed catalytic cycle. The formation of an O-O bond was suggested to be the rate-determining step, and the calculated activation barrier of 18.1 kcal mol(-1) was in good agreement with that obtained from experiments.

Abstract:A cobalt complex of 5,15-bis(pentafluorophenyl)-10-(4)-(1-pyrenyl)phenyl corrole that contains a triphenylphosphine axial ligand (1-PPh3 ) was synthesized and examined as an electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). If supported on graphene (G), the resulting 1-PPh3 /G material can catalyze the HER in aqueous solutions over a wide pH range of 0-14 with a high efficiency and durability. The significantly enhanced activity of 1-PPh3 /G, compared with that of its analogues 1-py/G (the Co-bound axial ligand is pyridine instead of triphenylphosphine) and 2-py/G (Co complex of 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole), highlights the effects of the pyrenyl substituent and the triphenylphosphine axial ligand on the HER activity. On one hand, the pyrenyl moiety can increase the π-π interactions between 1 and graphene and thus lead to a fast electron transfer from the electrode to 1. On the other hand, the triphenylphosphine axial ligand can increase the electron density (basicity) of Co and thus make the metal center more reactive to protons at the trans position through a so-called "push effect". This study concerns a significant example that shows the trans effect of the axial ligand on the HER, which has been investigated rarely. The combination of various ligand-design strategies in one molecule has been realized in 1-PPh3 to achieve a high catalytic HER performance. These factors are valuable to be used in other molecular catalyst systems.

Abstract:A series of manganese corroles bearing different substituents had been prepared and characterized by UV–vis, 1 H NMR, 19 F NMR, HRMS and XPS. These manganese corrole complexes were applied to electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for the first time. The results showed that manganese corroles are effective catalysts for HER in DMF solvent by using acetic acid (AcOH), trifluoroacetic Acid (TFA) and p-toluenesulfonic acid (TsOH) proton sources, and strong acid leads to higher electrocatalytic activity. When using TsOH as proton source, protonation of corroles ligand may be involved in HER. The electrocatalytic HER activity can be improved by increasing the electron-withdrawing substituent of the corrole macrocycle in both organic and aqueous media.

Abstract:The lack of viable means to simultaneously address intrinsic activity, density of active sites and electronic conductivity issues remains a grand challenge restricting the development of earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we report a boride-mediated synthesis method to address these issues. Our study found that the cobalt boride catalyst prepared by chemical reduction method is actually an amorphous mixture of CoBx, CoO and B-containing impurities. Annealing treatment of this composite initiates the solid reaction between CoBx and CoO, leading to the formation of tiny Co nanoparticles on the surface of amorphous CoO/B2O3 nanosheets. Besides the creation of abundant accessible Co/CoO active sites for the alkaline HER, the annealing treatment can also help to increase the specific surface area and to improve the electrical conductivity. Benefiting from these favorable attributes, the post-annealed Co/CoO/B2O3/CF catalyst exhibited outstanding HER performance in an alkaline electrolyte. It required overpotentials of 16 and 100 mV to afford 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, and showed good stability in the long-term operation, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C.

Abstract:Three binuclear metal (M=Co, Fe, Mn) xanthine bridged bis-corrole complexes were synthesized and investigated as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). All the prepared metal bis-corrole catalysts exhibited good HER performance when using acetic acid (AcOH), trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and p -toluenesulfonic acid (TsOH) as proton sources. The catalytic HER activities followed an order of Co bis-corrole ( 1 )> Fe bis-corrole ( 2 )> Mn bis-corrole ( 3 ) and complex 1 exhibited a significantly lower overpotential at −270 mV (in TsOH). Furthermore, complex 1 may go EECC and EECEC pathways in organic solvents (E: electron transfer step, C: proton coupling) and exhibit an HER activity with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 85 h −1 and a Faraday efficiency of 94% when using water as proton source.

Abstract:While many metal compounds have been widely studied as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the mechanism of HER on these materials is still not well understood nor why one compound is more electrocatalytically active than another. Here, we report our findings in synthesis and characterization of several Co compounds (CoP, CoS and Co3O4) with similar morphology and uniform size but dramatically different HER activities. Electrochemical measurements indicate that CoP has the best HER activity, achieving an overpotential of 80 mV at 10 mA cm-2, which is much smaller than those for CoS and Co3O4. DFT-based computations suggest that electron delocalization resulting from the p-d orbits coupling at the surfaces facilitates HER charge transfer kinetics and an optimal balance between the surface adsorption of H atom and desorption of H2. Both experimental and computational analyses reveal that the HER activity of the Co compounds is correlated closely with the energy gap between the anion p-band and the Co d-band centers, which can be used as an effective descriptor for HER activity. This work offers the scientific basis for rational design of more efficient metal compound electrocatalysts with high HER activity.

Abstract:5,15-bis(pentalfluorophenyl)-10-ethoxycarbonylcorrole and their metal complexes (metal = Ga, Co, Fe) had been synthesized and characterized (new complexes). These metal complexes had been used as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in organic acid and aqueous medium, in which the gallium corrole was firstly used for HER. The results showed that the redox potential of central metal atom for metal-centered metal (eg. Co and Fe) corroles plays a significant role in adjusting catalytic HER activity. Gallium corrole is a ligand-centered HER catalyst, the electronic structure of corrole ligand may play a key role in controlling the electrocatalytic activity.

Abstract:To address the urgent need for non-precious metal-based catalysts in the industrial preparation and application of hydrogen energy, we present a secondary hydrothermal strategy to prepare a Mo-modified cobalt carbonate precursor, resulting in the Mo–Co/Co 2 N 0.67 catalyst. The cobalt-based materials exhibit a layered flake structure due to molybdenum modification, exposing more active sites, while molybdenum oxide modification enhances hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). In alkaline HER measurements, Mo–Co/Co 2 N 0.67 achieves a remarkable current density of 10 mA cm −2 at only 27 mV. The overall water splitting of Mo–Co/Co 2 N 0.67 + RuO 2 can reach 10 mA cm −2 at 1.52 V voltage. In alkaline HOR measurements, it exhibits the current density of 2.92 mA cm −2 @0.1 V vs. RHE and an exchange current density (J 0 ) of 2.96 mA cm −2 . This work highlights the effective regulation of non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts through Mo modification, providing valuable insights for the development of efficient non-precious metal-based hydrogen electrocatalysis within the context of anion exchange membrane unitized reversible fuel cells (AEM-URFC).

Abstract:The versatile cobalt-phosphorus (Co-P) precursor was synthesized on Ni foam (NF) with an electrodeposition method. Simple room-temperature treatment of the precursor with 1 M NaOH and 0.5 M H2SO4 allows for the production of cobalt oxide nanorods (CoxOy/NF) and cobalt phosphate/phosphide (Co-Pi/CoP/NF), respectively. The resulting CoxOy/NF shows a low overpotential (η10) of 80 mV at −10 mA/cm2 in an alkaline electrolyte (pH = 14) for a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) toward electrocatalytic water splitting. The Co-Pi/CoP/NF exhibits a low η10 of 112 mV in an acidic electrolyte (pH = 0), in which the synergy between Co (+2) and Co (+3) may play an important role in the reaction.

Abstract:Water splitting is considered as one of the recommendable techniques to realize clear and renewable hydrogen production. However, it suffers from lacking efficient and sustainable catalysts. Herein, a metal–organic framework/graphene oxide pyrolysis strategy was proposed to prepare nitrogen-doped porous carbon-stabilized alloys supported on reduced graphene oxide (PdCo@N–C/rGO) composite. When evaluated as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the as-obtained PdCo@N–C/rGO shows an excellent performance in acidic media including positive onset potential close to that of commercial Pt/C (vs. SCE), low overpotential and Tafel slope, as well as long-term durability. Also, it delivers outstanding HER activities in alkaline and neutral conditions. The excellent performance could be mainly ascribed to their synergetic effect among alloy particles, nitrogen-doped porous carbon shell, and conductive rGO substrate.

Abstract:The development of efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions is an extremely important area for the development of green and clean energy. In this work, a precursor material was successfully prepared via electrodeposition of two doping elements to construct a co-doped cobalt hydroxide electrocatalyst (Ru-Co(OH)2-Se). This approach was demonstrated to be an effective way to improve the performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The experimental results show that the material exhibited a smaller impedance value and a larger electrochemically active surface area. In the HER process, the overpotential was only 109 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2. In addition, the doping of selenium and ruthenium effectively prevented the corrosion of the catalysts, with the (Ru-Co(OH)2-Se) material showing no significant reduction in the catalytic performance after 50 h. This synergistic approach through elemental co-doping demonstrated good results in the HER process.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) based on water splitting holds great promise for clean energy technologies, in which the key issue is exploring cost-effective materials to replace noble metal catalysts. Here, a sequential chemical etching and pyrolysis strategy are developed to prepare molybdenum carbide-decorated metallic cobalt@nitrogen-doped porous carbon polyhedrons (denoted as Mo/Co@N-C) hybrids for enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The obtained metallic Co nanoparticles are coated by N-doped carbon thin layers while the formed molybdenum carbide nanoparticles are well-dispersed in the whole Co@N-C frames. Benefiting from the additionally implanted molybdenum carbide active sites, the HER performance of Mo/Co@N-C hybrids is significantly promoted compared with the single Co@N-C that is derived from the pristine ZIF-67 both in alkaline and acidic media. As a result, the as-synthesized Mo/Co@N-C hybrids exhibit superior HER electrocatalytic activity, and only very low overpotentials of 157 and 187 mV are needed at 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively, opening a door for rational design and fabrication of novel low-cost electrocatalysts with hierarchical structures toward electrochemical energy storage and conversion.
