Separation and Purification Technology
Abstract:
Membrane based technologies such as nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) have evolved into the predominant methods to meet the ever-increasing freshwater shortage by means of wastewater reuse and desalination. As the core part, membrane plays the key role in pushing these technologies to the new level. Nevertheless, the currently used membranes, e.g., thin film composite membrane, seems to be challenged by the bottleneck. As a result, it is of great significance to exploit novel membranes. Graphene oxide (GO) membrane is just an potential alternative owing to their distinctive physical/chemical properties and the unique transport features. All these characteristics enable them to be a hot topic in separation. Nevertheless, it should be noted that GO membranes are also encountered with great challenges, among which the stability is most noticeable. It is inevitable to meed these issues when pushing the applications of GO membranes. From this point of view, we herein reviewed structure and transport features of GO membranes, with emphasis on the stabilization methodologies. With purpose to give more comprehensive information, we also discussed the fabrication strategies and the applications combined with latest reported research. We sincerely hope that this review paper could provide some fundamental for the research and development of more advanced GO membranes to meet the social challenge of freshwater crisis.
