Abstract:Photons excited into ground state modes at finite temperature display partitioning among photon phases, lifetimes and distances travelled since creation. These distributions set the distance from an interface a created photon has some chance of emission. Excited photons at each frequency have a phase velocity set by each mode propagation index which determines mode density and internal energy contribution. All photons emitted after striking an interface obliquely are refracted. Their exit intensities are then irreversible except when weak internal attenuation occurs. At low temperature attenuation index is small so reversibility is approximate. As temperature rises refraction direction varies. Total emission remains reversible after transitioning through a non equilibrium state with no other heat inputs. In equilibrium the densities of excitations that create and annihilate photons are in balance with photon densities while emissivity depends on both indices and internal incident direction. Modelled exit intensities from pure water and crystalline silica contain strong resonant intensities and match data accurately. Intrinsic resonances formed within liquids and compounds are due to photon modes hybridising with localized excitations, including molecular oscillations and the anharmonic component of lattice distortions. They explain the many resonant spectral intensities seen in remote sensing. Each hybrid oscillator is a photonic virtual bound state whose energy fluctuates between levels separated by mode energy. Refraction induces solid angle changes and often anomalous refraction while thermal recycling of internally reflected photons modifies intensities and internal energy. Enhanced internal heat flux from phonon drag by photon density gradients under an external temperature gradient is also predicted.

External Luminescence and Photon Recycling in Near-Field Thermophotovoltaics

Abstract:The importance of considering near-field effects on photon recycling and spontaneous emission in a thermophotovoltaic device is investigated. Fluctuational electrodynamics is used to calculate external luminescence from a photovoltaic cell as a function of emitter type, vacuum gap thickness between the emitter and cell, and cell thickness. The observed changes in external luminescence suggest strong modifications of photon recycling caused by the presence of the emitter. Photon recycling for propagating modes is affected by reflection at the vacuum-emitter interface and is substantially decreased by the leakage towards the emitter through the tunneling of frustrated modes. In addition, spontaneous emission by the cell can be strongly enhanced by the presence of an emitter supporting surface-polariton modes. It follows that using a radiative recombination model with a spatially uniform radiative lifetime, even corrected by a photon-recycling factor, is inappropriate. Applying the principles of detailed balance and accounting for nonradiative recombination mechanisms, the impact of external luminescence enhancement in the near field on thermophotovoltaic performance is investigated. It is shown that unlike isolated cells, the external luminescence efficiency is not solely dependent on cell quality but significantly increases as the vacuum gap thickness decreases below 400 nm for the case of an intrinsic silicon emitter. In turn, the open-circuit voltage and power density benefit from this enhanced external luminescence toward the emitter. This benefit is larger as cell quality, characterized by the contribution of nonradiative recombination, decreases.

Abstract:According to the rendering equation, the diffuse and the specular components of the outgoing intensity of each surface patch should be solved simultaneously. Rather than establishing a huge set of linear equations defining the unknown directional intensities for all directions and all surface patches, we expand the concept of the delta form-factor which concerns the light energy transfer of a surface patch along a respective direction. As the delta form-factor for non-diffuse surface patches are dependent on the spatial and spectral distributions of light energy, they could not be calculated geometrically. In this paper, we present a new radiosity approach which progressively approximates the delta form-factors and the light energy distributions within a general environment to the correct solution. The nucleus of our approach is procedural iteration. Statistics indicate the potentials of this method for complex non-diffuse environments.
Rigorous Treatment of Photon Recycling in Thermodynamics of Photovoltaics: The Case of Perovskite Thin-Film Solar Cells

Abstract:The establishment of a rigorous theory on thermodynamics of light management in photovoltaics that accommodates various loss mechanisms as well as wave-optical effects in the absorption and reemission of light is at stake in this contribution. To this end, we propose a theoretical framework to calculate the open-circuit voltage enhancement resulting from photon recycling ($\Delta V^{\mathrm{PR}}_{\mathrm{oc}}$) with rigorous wave-optical treatment. It can be applied to both planar thin-film and nanostructured single-junction solar cells. We derive an explicit expression for $\Delta V^{\mathrm{PR}}_{\mathrm{oc}}$, which reveals its dependence on internal quantum luminescence efficiency, parasitic reabsorption, and on photon escape probabilities of reemmited photons. While the internal quantum luminescence efficiency is an intrinsic material property, both latter quantities can be determined rigorously for an arbitrary solar cell architecture by three-dimensional electrodynamic dipole emission calculations. We demonstrate the strengths and validity of our framework by determining the impact of photon recycling on the $V_{\mathrm{oc}}$ of a conventional planar organo-metal halide perovskite thin-film solar cell and compare it to established reference cases with perfect antireflection and Lambertian light scattering. Our calculations reveal $\Delta V^{\mathrm{PR}}_{\mathrm{oc}}$ values of up to 80 mV for the considered device stack in the absence of angular restriction and up to 240 mV when the escape cone above the cell is restricted to $\theta_{\mathrm{out}}=2.5^\circ$ around the cell normal. These improvements impose severe constraints on the parasitic absorption as a parasitic reabsorption probability of only 2\% reduces the $\Delta V^{\mathrm{PR}}_{\mathrm{oc}}$ to 100 mV for the same angular restriction. Our work here can be used to provide design guidelines.

Abstract:Photon recycling plays an important role in the light outcoupling of state‐of‐the‐art solar cells and has been considered a necessary condition to achieve the radiative limit of open‐circuit voltage (VOC) and efficiency. However, due to the impact of photon recycling on bulk and surface radiation of solar cells being overlooked, experimental demonstrations on the accuracy of existing photon recycling models are scarce and some contrary theoretical results also emerge. Here, we clarify the relationship between photon recycling and radiation processes, as well as the corresponding VOC losses of solar cells based on the principle of detailed balance. We show that weakening photon recycling is more effective to boost the device performance than enhancing it, promoting the theoretical efficiencies of solar cells, such as perovskite, Si, and GaAs, to 98.5%, 94.9%, and almost 100% of their radiative limit, respectively. Moreover, weakening photon recycling also helps to maintain higher efficiency when the internal radiative efficiency decreases, which benefits higher device stability. Our work provides an in‐depth understanding of the role of photon recycling in solar cells and helps to push efficiency to a new limit. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Generalization of Kirchhoff's Law of Thermal Radiation: The Inherent Relations Between Quantum Efficiency and Emissivity

Abstract:Planck's law of thermal radiation depends on the temperature, $T$, and the emissivity, $\epsilon$, of a body, where emissivity is the coupling of heat to radiation that depends on both phonon-electron nonradiative interactions and electron-photon radiative interactions. Another property of a body is absorptivity, $\alpha$, which only depends on the electron-photon radiative interactions. At thermodynamic equilibrium, nonradiative interactions are balanced, resulting in Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation that equals these two properties, i.e., $\epsilon = \alpha$. For non-equilibrium, quantum efficiency ($QE$) describes the statistics of photon emission, which like emissivity depends on both radiative and nonradiative interactions. Past generalized Planck's equation extends Kirchhoff's law out of equilibrium by scaling the emissivity with the pump-dependent chemical-potential $\mu$, obscuring the relations between the body properties. Here we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a prime equation relating these properties in the form of $\epsilon = \alpha(1-QE)$, which is in agreement with a recent universal modal radiation law for all thermal emitters. At equilibrium, these relations are reduced to Kirchhoff's law. Our work lays out the fundamental evolution of non-thermal emission with temperature, which is critical for the development of lighting and energy devices.

Radiant fluence from ray tracing in optical multipass systems

Abstract:In applications of optical multipass cells in photochemical reactors and laser excitation of weak transitions, estimation of the radiation dose in a volume of interest allows to assess the performance and optimize the design of the cell. We adopt radiant fluence as the figure of merit and employ the radiative transfer equation to derive analytical expressions for average radiant fluence in a given volume of interest. These are used to establish practical approximations and a Monte Carlo ray tracing model of the spatial distribution of fluence. Ray tracing is performed with Zemax OpticsStudio 18.9.

Abstract:Accurate modeling of charge transport and both thermal and luminescent radiation is crucial to the understanding and design of radiative thermal energy converters. Charge-carrier dynamics in semiconductors are well-described by the Poisson-drift-diffusion equations, and thermal radiation in emitter-absorber structures can be computed using multilayer fluctuational electrodynamics. These two types of energy flows interact through radiation absorption or luminescence and charge-carrier generation or recombination. However, past research has typically only assumed limited interaction, with thermal radiation absorption as an input for charge-carrier models to predict device performance. To examine this assumption, we develop a fully coupled iterative model of charge and radiation transport in semiconductor devices, and we use our model to analyze near-field and far-field GaSb thermophotovoltaic and thermoradiative systems. By comparing our results with past methods that do not consider cross-influences between charge and radiation transport, we find that a fully coupled approach is necessary to accurately model photon recycling and near-field enhancement of external luminescence. A Polychromatic Theory of Emission

Abstract:The control of thermal radiation by means of micro-structured materials is an active area of research with applications such as thermophotovoltaics and radiative cooling. The original theories of thermal radiation were derived for electromagnetically large objects, and predict unpolarized, omnidirectional, and uncorrelated radiation. Microstructures, however, exhibit thermal emissions that can be polarized, highly directional, and spatially and temporally correlated. The original theories are also restricted to thermal equilibrium situations and do not apply to steady-state emissions of electromagnetically small objects under a stationary illumination. In here, we establish a polychromatic framework to predict thermal radiation in the stationary regime, which includes thermal equilibrium. After identifying an object--adapted set of independent polychromatic absorption modes, we assume that the emission also occurs independently through the outgoing versions of each polychromatic mode. Energy conservation leads then to a Kirchhoff-like law for each polychromatic mode. The salient properties of the polychromatic theory are: Emission in frequencies that are absent in the illumination, change in the number of photons, and applicability to both thermal radiation and luminescence upon illumination with a continuous wave laser, as long as the emitted power depends linearly on the input intensity. These properties are independent of the chosen set of polychromatic modes. In this work, we chose the absorption modes derived from the scattering operator of a given object, and use the T-matrix formalism for computations, which applies to general objects, including microscopic ones. Some counter-intuitive results motivate the future search for a different set of modes.

Abstract:The study of radiation exergy has important significance for solar energy and high-temperature engineering. In this paper, several exergy expressions of blackbody radiation were discussed and the differences between Petela's expression of exergy and two other expressions were analyzed. Considering that radiant energy and thermal energy are different, the radiation machine model was established; furthermore, the validity of Petela's formula was indicated by this model. Based on the concept of radiation equivalent temperature, the integral form expression of monochromatic photon exergy was put forward by establishing the infinite-staged Carnot heat engine model. At the same time, an approximate relation between equivalent temperature and radiation wavelength was given. The error of this relation is negligible when calculating the exergy of blackbody radiation within the temperature range of the engineering field. Finally, the monochromatic photon entropy was discussed by considering the infinite-staged Carnot heat engine model, and an expression of photon entropy with integral form was given. The monochromatic photon entropy and exergy proposed in our paper satisfy the thermodynamic relation and can reflect the differences between radiant energy and thermal energy.
A Microscopic Perspective on Photovoltaic Reciprocity in Ultrathin Solar Cells

Abstract:The photovoltaic reciprocity theory relates the electroluminescence spectrum of a solar cell under applied bias to the external photovoltaic quantum efficiency of the device as measured at short circuit conditions. Its derivation is based on detailed balance relations between local absorption and emission rates in optically isotropic media with non-degenerate quasi-equilibrium carrier distributions. In many cases, the dependence of density and spatial variation of electronic and optical device states on the point of operation is modest and the reciprocity relation holds. In nanostructure-based photovoltaic devices exploiting confined modes, however, the underlying assumptions are no longer justifiable. In the case of ultrathin absorber solar cells, the modification of the electronic structure with applied bias is significant due to the large variation of the built-in field. Straightforward use of the external quantum efficiency as measured at short circuit conditions in the photovoltaic reciprocity theory thus fails to reproduce the electroluminescence spectrum at large forward bias voltage. This failure is demonstrated here by numerical simulation of both spectral quantities at normal incidence and emission for an ultrathin GaAs p-i-n solar cell using an advanced quantum kinetic formalism based on non-equilibrium Green's functions of coupled photons and charge carriers. While coinciding with the semiclassical relations under the conditions of their validity, the theory provides a consistent microscopic relationship between absorption, emission and charge carrier transport in photovoltaic devices at arbitrary operating conditions and for any shape of optical and electronic density of states.

Abstract:<p>Radiative and non-radiative charge carrier recombination in thin-film diodes plays a key role in determining the efficiency of electronic devices made of next generation semiconductors such as organic, perovskite and nanocrystals. In this work, we show that lowering the bulk recombination does not necessarily result in enhanced performance metrics of electronic devices. From the perspective of charge carrier extraction and injection, the radiative limit of the open-circuit voltage of solar cells, noise current of photodetectors and lasing threshold of injection lasers cannot be improved if the contacts are not perfectly selective. A numerical drift-diffusion model is used to investigate the interplay between bulk recombination and surface recombination of minority carriers at the contacts in bipolar thin diode devices based on low-mobility semiconductors. The surface recombination becomes prominent in case of reduced bulk recombination strengths when non-selective contacts, i.e., contacts that are either metallic or have imperfect charge-selective interlayers, are employed. Finally, we derive analytical approximations for the case when diffusion-limited surface recombination of minority carriers at Ohmic contacts dominates the dark current. These results indicate that having perfectly selective contacts becomes crucial in systems with suppressed bulk recombination – a challenging requirement for the future state-of-the-art thin-film solar cells, light-emitting devices and photodetectors made of next generation semiconductors.</p>

Inverse Diffusion Approximation for Extraction of Scattering and Absorption Coefficients in Highly Scattering Media

Abstract:Photon transport through a diffusing slab can be described by the radiative transfer equation (RTE). When the slab is highly scattering and weakly absorbing, the RTE simplifies to the diffusion equation. In this paper, an inverse diffusion approximation (IDA) method is numerically developed to determine the optical properties (reduced scattering $\mu'_s$ and absorption coefficient $\mu_a$) of a homogeneous slab using simple reflectance and transmission measurements with a spectrometer. The reflectance and transmission of a diffusing slab with an arbitrary thickness can then be predicted by solving the forward problem by using the calculated $\mu'_s$ and $\mu_a$. Our method is validated both numerically, by directly comparing with Monte-Carlo simulations, and experimentally, by comparing with measurements on ZnO/PDMS and TiO$_2$/PDMS composite polymer films with varying thicknesses. The IDA method is also applied to distinguish between different types of tissue. Overall, our method could be used to guide the design of radiative cooling reflectors, or lighting and optical display diffusers for applications in medical imaging and other fields.

We show that the absorption coefficients and the scattering coefficient can be uniquely determined from the albedo operator. Abstract:Abstract It is known that the more tractable Markovian models of coupling suited for weak interactions may overestimate the Rabi frequency notably when applied to the strong-coupling regime. Here, a more significant consequence of the non-Markovian interaction between a photon emitter and dissipating matter such as resonant plasmonic nanoparticles is described. A large increase of radiative decay and a diminished non-radiative loss is shown, which unravels the origin of unexpected large enhancements of surface-enhanced-Raman-spectroscopy, as well as the anomalous enhancements of emission due to extremely small fully absorbing metal nanoparticles less than 10 nm in dimensions. We construct the mixture of pure states of the coupled emitter-nanoparticle system, unlike conventional methods that rely on the orthogonal modes of the nanoparticle alone.

Abstract:The emission of electromagnetic waves from a source within or near a non-trivial medium (with or without boundaries, crystalline or amorphous, with inhomogeneities, absorption and so on) is sometimes studied using the reciprocity principle. This is a variation of the method of Green's functions. If one is only interested in the asymptotic radiation fields the generality of these methods may actually be a shortcoming: obtaining expressions valid for the uninteresting near fields is not just a wasted effort but may be prohibitively difficult. In this work we obtain a modified form the reciprocity principle which gives the asymptotic radiation field directly. The method may be used to obtain the radiation from a prescribed source, and also to study scattering problems. To illustrate the power of the method we study a few pedagogical examples and then, as a more challenging application we tackle two related problems. We calculate the specular reflection of x rays by a rough surface and by a smoothly graded surface taking polarization effects into account. In conventional treatments of reflection x rays are treated as scalar waves, polarization effects are neglected. This is a good approximation at grazing incidence but becomes increasingly questionable for soft x rays and UV at higher incidence angles. PACs: 61.10.Dp, 61.10.Kw, 03.50.De

Abstract:The theory of heat transfer by electromagnetic radiation is based on the radiative transfer equation (RTE) for the radiation intensity, or equivalently on the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) for the photon distribution. We focus in this review article, after a brief overview on different solution methods, on a recently introduced approach based on truncated moment expansion. Due to the linearity of the underlying BTE, the appropriate closure of the system of moment equations is entropy production rate minimization. This closure provides a distribution function and the associated effective transport coefficients, like mean absorption coefficients and the Eddington factor, for an arbitrary number of moments. The moment approach is finally illustrated with an application of the two-moment equations to an electrical arc.
