Abstract:Cognitive training has been shown to increase neural plasticity and cognitive reserve, potentially reducing the risk of developing dementia. Music learning, specifically piano playing, has been shown to be an effective form of multimodal cognitive training. This pilot study explored the feasibility and efficacy of using a socially assistive robot to provide a piano learning cognitive training intervention to older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Participants (N=11) engaged in a four-week feasibility study, which included a one-hour piano lesson per week led by a remotely controlled robot. Participants experienced improved cognitive function in the verbal memory (p=0.04), executive function (p=0.01), reaction time (p=0.04), and cognitive flexibility (p=0.003) domains, as well as in the calculated neurocognitive index score (p=0.03). Socially assistive robots may have the potential to provide cognitive training in the form of piano lessons for older adults with mild cognitive impairment, especially adults who cannot access traditional services.

Abstract:International Journal of Music Education, Ahead of Print. Across the globe, students begin and continue learning the piano for various reasons. For many this can be an engaging and enjoyable activity which enhances their commitment to learning. Foundational in this process, practice is an essential part of piano learning. Without the excitement of performing for others, for some practice may become uninteresting and repetitious. Ultimately, boredom may affect piano learners and obstruct their commitment and progress. In this article, we explore what motivates upper primary and secondary school piano learners to practice and how piano teachers can stimulate piano learners' intrinsic motivations. We observed 34 upper primary and secondary school piano learners' lessons in Melbourne, Australia. Subsequently, we interviewed the participants. Following thematic analysis, the findings revealed that students' engagement with practice is influenced by their emotions, and by extrinsic factors such as parental support for practice. We offer new interpretations of how to connect self-determination theory to self-regulation learning based on previous scholar's works. This article can inform music educators in motivating students' piano practice and leading students to achieve progress.

Increasing student motivation to learn the piano using modern digital technologies: independent piano learning with the soft Mozart app

Abstract:Modern computer apps are known to effectively develop professional musical competencies. This paper discusses how student motivation and independent learning can be enhanced using the Soft Mozart app. Initially, the study found that Soft Mozart is a comprehensive training app that is consistent in terms of educational task and skill test construction. Moreover, it provides a thorough approach to the development of technical and sight-reading skills. The student training conducted in this study showed that students in the two study groups had different motivation levels. Students of Group 1, who learned the piano independently using Soft Mozart, had the highest motivation in the first (84%) and fourth (87%) training months. The increased motivation in this group is explained by the effectiveness and interactivity of digital technology-based learning. On the other hand, students of Group 2 who studied with a teacher using traditional methods, showed lower motivation. Task sequencing (3.0) was of greater importance for students of Group 1 because it develops logic and organization in learning. The comprehensiveness of the app was the least important for students (2.2) since they were more concerned with the way the information was presented. Teachers, on the contrary, believe that comprehensiveness (2.9) is of the greatest importance in this type of learning. According to them, a comprehensive approach ensures the compliance of the interactive curriculum with the traditional one. A comparison of the quality of training between the two student groups showed that the training was more effective for students of Group 1 (79% of students achieved high results). Only 41% of Group 2 students achieved high results, which is explained by the use of a different learning approach. This paper is of practical significance, as it sheds light on the possibility of creating an independent learning environment based on the use of the Soft Mozart app. Future research can support the current findings by comparing the effectiveness of Soft Mozart and Piano Marvel for independent piano learning.

Abstract:This study presents a second language word learning experiment using a social robot with motivational strategies. These strategies were implemented in a social robot tutor to stimulate preschool children's intrinsic motivation. Subsequently, we investigated their effect on children's task engagement and word learning performance. The strategies were derived from the Self-Determination Theory, a well-known psychological theory that assumes that intrinsic motivation is strongly related to the fulfilment of three basic human needs, namely the need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. We found an increase in the strength and duration of task engagement when all three psychological needs were supported by the robot. However, no significant results for learning gains were observed. Our intervention appears a promising method for improving child-robot interactions in educational settings, especially to sustain in long-term interactions.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the potential benefits and effectiveness of incorporating smart pianos in the piano learning process for children. The research investigates the impact of smart piano teaching on enhancing piano skills among children. The participants of this study consist of students aged 4 to 6 years old, who are enrolled in a piano learning program that incorporates smart pianos. The research examines the students' progress over a designated period, comparing it with a control group using traditional piano instruction methods. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the benefits and limitations of smart piano education in piano education. The results reveal that smart pianos provide interactive learning experiences, including visual feedback, practice assistance features, progress tracking, and individualized learning options. These features positively impact students' engagement, motivation, and overall piano skill development. The implications of this research suggest that smart piano can be a valuable tool in piano education, enhancing students' learning experiences and promoting their overall musical growth. The study calls for further research with larger sample sizes and longer duration to validate and extend these initial findings.
Music Mode: Transforming Robot Movement into Music Increases Likability and Perceived Intelligence

Abstract:As robots enter everyday spaces like offices, the sounds they create affect how they are perceived. We present Music Mode, a novel mapping between a robot's joint motions and sounds, programmed by artists and engineers to make the robot generate music as it moves. Two experiments were designed to characterize the effect of this musical augmentation on human users. In the first experiment, a robot performed three tasks while playing three different sound mappings. Results showed that participants observing the robot perceived it as more safe, animate, intelligent, anthropomorphic, and likable when playing the Music Mode Orchestra software. To test whether the results of the first experiment were due to the Music Mode algorithm, rather than music alone, we conducted a second experiment. Here the robot performed the same three tasks, while a participant observed via video, but the Orchestra music was either linked to its movement or random. Participants rated the robots as more intelligent when the music was linked to the movement. Robots using Music Mode logged approximately two hundred hours of operation while navigating, wiping tables, and sorting trash, and bystander comments made during this operating time served as an embedded case study. This paper has both designerly contributions and engineering contributions. The contributions are: (1) an interdisciplinary choreographic, musical, and coding design process to develop a real-world robot sound feature, (2) a technical implementation for movement-based sound generation, and (3) two experiments and an embedded case study of robots running this feature during daily work activities that resulted in increased likeability and perceived intelligence of the robot.

Educational Robots Improve K-12 Students’ Computational Thinking and STEM Attitudes: Systematic Review

Abstract:Due to the interdisciplinary nature of robotics, more and more attention has been paid to its effectiveness in the field of education in recent years. This systematic review evaluated existing studies in improving K-12 students’ computational thinking and STEM attitudes. Research articles published between 2010 and 2019 were collated from major databases according to six criteria, and 17 studies were eligible. A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of educational robots in terms of standardized mean differences (SMD) or mean differences (MD) of test scores as outcome measures. The overall effect size was medium (SMD = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.23–0.69). Subgroup analysis found that some groups to have better effectiveness. Specifically, the effect of STEM attitudes (SMD = 0.01) was smaller than computational thinking (SMD = 0.48). Educational robots had more significant effect on boys (MD = 0.39) than girls (MD = 0.27). The effect in primary school (SMD = 0.27) was higher than in middle school (SMD = 0.04), and the effect was great on short-term instruction with educational robots (SMD = 0.35). Based on these results, the study makes some recommendations for educators about strengthening the influence of educational robots on STEM attitudes, improving the persistence of their learning effects, and further exploring their application models.

Abstract:The piano is one of the most popular musical instruments among children. Playing the piano requires some effort from both children and teachers. At the same time, life puts forward new requirements for mastering advanced teaching methods that can provide maximum results. Piano teachers are faced with the task of making learning as meaningful, interesting, and personality-oriented as possible. With this in mind, the issues of finding, developing and implementing alternative forms and methods of organizing training, new advanced pedagogical ideas, as well as the latest educational technologies in the process of learning to play the piano are considered important. After all, technological progress does not stand still. Modern technologies are developing so actively that literally everyone has new products that seemed inaccessible yesterday. Therefore, the task of a modern teacher is to constantly monitor the emergence of new forms, methods of work, new technologies and effective means to maximize the stimulation of creative activity of students. Using the achievements of Advanced Science and technology significantly helps not only to activate students ' attention, but also to achieve significantly better learning outcomes. After all, modern children are the so – called "digital generation", brought up from childhood on free access to digital technologies of our time. This tendency to constantly technize our lives has both positive and negative aspects, but we cannot avoid it. Therefore, it is necessary to find the optimal balance in the use of modern technologies, the latest teaching methods and musical and game activities in the process of learning to play the piano. Modern innovations are designed to form the desire of piano students for independent learning, ideally-lifelong learning. They ensure the creation of a learning environment in which the child learns without compulsion, with great pleasure, guaranteed to learn the necessary amount of knowledge and provided that theory is constantly connected with practice.
Children's feelings about piano performances across a year of study

Abstract:Solo performance is a common experience for children learning to play an instrument, yet the research literature on these experiences is limited, with a focus on older children and adolescents. The purpose of this study was to examine younger children's feelings about performance over the course of a year of study. Forty-one children were interviewed about their piano lessons and performance experiences at the end of two consecutive semesters of study. They also responded to a pictorial scale on their feelings about performance at each interview and again at two piano recitals. Results indicate that children are remarkably consistent in their feelings about performing in piano recitals, with few significant changes over time and context. Correlation analyses indicate changes in the relationships between feelings about performance and certain study variables over time-in particular age, liking of lessons, liking of performing, practice time, and perception of being good at piano. In the fall term, gender and age are significant predictors of feelings about performance, with younger children and boys feeling most positive. In the spring, the findings shift and the only significant predictor is children's liking of piano lessons. Implications and directions for further research are discussed.
Play it by Ear: A perceptual algorithm for autonomous melodious piano playing with a bio-inspired robotic hand

Abstract:Perception shapes the learning and performance of motor behavior in animals. In contrast to this inherent biological and psychological connection between perception and action, traditional artificial intelligence methods for robotics emphasize reward-driven extensive trial-and-error or error-driven control techniques. Our study goes back to the perceptual roots of biological learning and behavior, and demonstrates a novel end-to-end perceptual experience-driven approach for autonomous piano playing. Our 'Play it by Ear' perceptual learning algorithm, coupled to a bio-inspired 4-finger robotic hand, can replicate melodies on a keyboard after hearing them once, without explicit or prior knowledge of notes, the hand, or the keyboard. Our key innovation is an end-to-end pipeline that, after a brief period of 'motor babbling' by the hand, converts the sound of a melody into native musical percepts (note sequences and intensities) that it replays as sequences of key presses. In this way, any new melody consisting of notes experienced during babbling can be reproduced by the robotic musician hand on the basis of its percepts. This playback includes capturing the qualitative and quantitative musical dynamics and tempo with a nuance comparable with that of four human pianists performing the same melody. These compelling results emphasize the perceptual underpinnings of artistic performance as an alternative to traditional control-theoretical emphasis on state estimation and error correction. Our approach opens avenues for the development of simple machines that can still execute artistic and physical tasks that approach the nuance inherent in human behavior.

Abstract:Children's piano music lessons are well-liked in learning because they make use of children's minds, which are better able to acquire new information quickly. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the factors that influence children's interest in learning the piano, taking into account their family environment, the teaching methods and approaches used by their teachers, and their own motivations. It takes time, consideration, and a good outlook to encourage kids to study the piano. The correct time, a musical environment, and tutors can all help make learning the piano enjoyable. Children can experience the rhythm and emotion of music via their bodies when they are exposed to percussion instruments and activities. It aims to develop children's musical abilities, enhance instructors' teaching strategies, foster a positive musical environment for children, and encourage children to understand the concepts of piano music, so promoting children's intellectual and emotional learning.

Abstract:Piano performance requires not only skillful and excellent playing skills, but also good psychological quality and improvisation. The perfect performance is the natural language of a pianist's usual skill and mood. The various emotional activities and expressions of the overall situation in relation to the player's performance, mental issues such as the intensity and horror of the scene, seriously affect the pianist’s actual performance while playing. The piano is therefore very important for mind control. Based on this, this paper attempts to apply the current hot VR technology to piano performance and simulate the virtual piano performance scene through VR technology, so as to enhance the on-the-spot experience for piano players and continuously improve their psychological quality, so that they can better adjust their nervous bad mentality in actual combat. This article first has carried on the 3D virtual reality piano stage modeling experiment, and then selected the 20 young pianist piano training involved in day-to-day contrast test, the test group of 10 people for daily training, virtual piano stage under the environment of normal control group of 10 people ordinary daily training, training time four hours a day, for three months, all participants will take part in The Provincial Youth Piano Competition since the end of the training. The final test results showed that in the competition site, the performance level of 10 players in the test group was generally better than that of the control group. Among them, there were 2 subjects in the test group who played for a long time, while one of the control groups gave up playing in the middle. In addition, in the horizontal comparison, it is found that subjects who are older and have been learning piano for a long time have better on-the-spot mental adjustment ability and more stable performance. Boys performed better than girls, and subjects with positive, optimistic, and confident personalities performed better than those with introverted and low self-confidence.

Abstract:Replicating human-like dexterity in robot hands represents one of the largest open problems in robotics. Reinforcement learning is a promising approach that has achieved impressive progress in the last few years; however, the class of problems it has typically addressed corresponds to a rather narrow definition of dexterity as compared to human capabilities. To address this gap, we investigate piano-playing, a skill that challenges even the human limits of dexterity, as a means to test high-dimensional control, and which requires high spatial and temporal precision, and complex finger coordination and planning. We introduce RoboPianist, a system that enables simulated anthropomorphic hands to learn an extensive repertoire of 150 piano pieces where traditional model-based optimization struggles. We additionally introduce an open-sourced environment, benchmark of tasks, interpretable evaluation metrics, and open challenges for future study. Child-Robot Interaction in a Musical Dance Game: An Exploratory Comparison Study between Typically Developing Children and Children with Autism

Abstract:Using robots in therapy for children on the autism spectrum is a promising avenue for child-robot interaction, and one that has garnered significant interest from the research community. After preliminary interviews with stakeholders and evaluating music selections, twelve typically developing (TD) children and three children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) participated in an experiment where they played the dance freeze game to four songs in partnership with either a NAO robot or a human partner. Overall, there were significant differences between TD children and children with ASD (e.g., mimicry, dance quality, & game play). There were mixed results for TD children, but they tended to show greater engagement with the researcher. However, objective results for children with ASD showed greater attention and engagement while dancing with the robot. There was little difference in game performance between partners or songs for either group. However, upbeat music did encourage greater movement than calm music. Using a robot in a musical dance game for children with ASD appears to show the advantages and potential just as in previous research efforts. Implications and future research are discussed with the results.
Performance Control System of Dulcimer Music-Playing Robot

Abstract:Music-playing robots have been gradually applied to art performance, music education and so on. This paper introduces a special robot playing dulcimer, a kind of Chinese traditional musical instrument. With mechanical characteristics taken into accounted, an assignment method of performance task and an inverse kinematics control algorithm of redundant robot manipulators are proposed in this paper. Based on these studies, a performance control system is developed, which can parse a given MIDI file, perform task allocation, and control the dual mechanical arms holding bamboo hammers to strike the strings of dulcimer. The experimental test shows that the performance control system is able to control the dulcimer music-playing robot to complete music performance in real-time in a humanized way.
Passive somatosensory training enhances piano skill in adolescent and adult pianists: A preliminary study

Abstract:Sensory afferent information, such as auditory and somatosensory feedback while moving, plays a crucial role in both control and learning of motor performance across the lifespan. Music performance requires skillful integration of multimodal sensory information for the production of dexterous movements. However, it has not been understood what roles somatosensory afferent information plays in the acquisition and sophistication of specialized motor skills of musicians across different stages of development. In the present preliminary study, we addressed this issue by using a novel technique with a hand exoskeleton robot that can externally move the fingers of pianists. Short-term exposure to fast and complex finger movements generated by the exoskeleton (i.e., passive movements) increased the maximum rate of repetitive piano keystrokes by the pianists. This indicates that somatosensory inputs derived from the externally generated motions enhanced the quickness of the sequential finger movements in piano performance, even though the pianists did not voluntarily move the fingers. The enhancement of motor skill through passive somatosensory training using the exoskeleton was more pronounced in adolescent pianists than adult pianists. These preliminary results implicate a sensitive period of neuroplasticity of the somatosensory-motor system of trained pianists, which emphasizes the importance of somatosensory-motor training in professional music education during adolescence.

Abstract:The virtuoso plays the piano with passion, poetry and extraordinary technical ability. As Liszt said (a virtuoso)must call up scent and blossom, and breathe the breath of life. The strongest robots that can play a piano are based on a combination of specialized robot hands/piano and hardcoded planning algorithms. In contrast to that, in this paper, we demonstrate how an agent can learn directly from machine-readable music score to play the piano with dexterous hands on a simulated piano using reinforcement learning (RL) from scratch. We demonstrate the RL agents can not only find the correct key position but also deal with various rhythmic, volume and fingering, requirements. We achieve this by using a touch-augmented reward and a novel curriculum of tasks. We conclude by carefully studying the important aspects to enable such learning algorithms and that can potentially shed light on future research in this direction.

Abstract:In recent years, service robots are widely used for different fields. The fields include house cleaning, entertainment, reception and security. Entertainment has become an important issue for robot applications. In this paper, we design an electronic piano playing robot which can automatically play electronic piano according to a user-defined piano sheet music. The robot has 5 finger hands to play the electronic piano keyboard. There are 2 degrees of freedom in each finger. Stepping motors are employed to rotate finger mechanisms to the desired position. Finger tip are pulled up and down by a steel string with a pneumatic cylinder. A specially-designed controller move the finger tip down to hit the desired key on the electronic piano. If the range of finger movement cannot touch the desired key then the hand will be moved by a linear motor. All fingers and hands can be controlled by the controller independently. Digital I/O PCI card are used to send commands to the controller.
A Music-Therapy Robotic Platform for Children with Autism: A Pilot Study

Abstract:Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication skills including motor control, turn-taking, and emotion recognition. Innovative technology, such as socially assistive robots, has shown to be a viable method for Autism therapy. This paper presents a novel robot-based music-therapy platform for modeling and improving the social responses and behaviors of children with ASD. Our autonomous social interactive system consists of three modules. We adopted Short-time Fourier Transform and Levenshtein distance to fulfill the design requirements: a) "music detection" and b) "smart scoring and feedback", which allows NAO to understand music and provide additional practice and oral feedback to the users as applicable. We designed and implemented six Human-Robot-Interaction (HRI) sessions including four intervention sessions. Nine children with ASD and seven Typically Developing participated in a total of fifty HRI experimental sessions. Using our platform, we collected and analyzed data on social behavioral changes and emotion recognition using Electrodermal Activity (EDA) signals. The results of our experiments demonstrate most of the participants were able to complete motor control tasks with ~70% accuracy. Six out of the 9 ASD participants showed stable turn-taking behavior when playing music. The results of automated emotion classification using Support Vector Machines illustrate that emotional arousal in the ASD group can be detected and well recognized via EDA bio-signals. In summary, the results of our data analyses, including emotion classification using EDA signals, indicate that the proposed robot-music based therapy platform is an attractive and promising assistive tool to facilitate the improvement of fine motor control and turn-taking skills in children with ASD.

This study looks at a sample of preschool children (<em class="a-plus-plus">N</em> = 98) from five early childhood centers in Singapore who completed a 7-week STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) KIBO robotics curriculum in their classrooms called, “Dances from Around the World.” KIBO is a newly developed robotics kit that teaches both engineering and programming. KIBO’s actions are programmed using tangible programming blocks—no screen-time required. Children’s knowledge of programming concepts were assessed upon completion of the curriculum using the Solve-Its assessment. Results indicate that children were highly successful at mastering foundational programming concepts. Additionally, teachers were successful at promoting a collaborative and creative environment, but less successful at finding ways to engage with the greater school community through robotics. This research study was part of a large country-wide initiative to increase the use of developmentally appropriate engineering tools in early childhood settings. Implications for the design of technology, curriculum, and other resources are addressed.</p>
