Abstract:Understanding building metabolism is critical for guiding urban resource management and addressing challenges in urban sustainable development. Key attributes of buildings, including geolocation, footprint, height, and vintage, are crucial to characterizing spatiotemporal patterns of building metabolism. However, these attributes are usually challenging to obtain broadly and automatically, which obscures a comprehensive understanding and accurate assessment of urban metabolism. Moreover, the lack of a finer spatial pattern of these attributes shadows a spatially explicit characterization of material stock and flow in cities. In this study, we took Shenzhen—whose urbanization over the past three decades has been unprecedented in China and even around the world— has been taken as an example to develop a city-level building dataset based on a random-forest model and quantify the spatiotemporal patterns of material metabolism at relatively high spatial resolution (in 500 m × 500 m grids) by combing material flow analysis (MFA) with geographic information system (GIS). The results show that Shenzhen grew from a small town with 281.02 × 10 6 m 3 of buildings in the 1990s to a mega-city with 3585.5 × 10 6 m 3 of buildings in 2018 and expanded both outward and upward from downtown to suburban areas. The urban "weight" (material stock) increased from 92.69 Mt in the 1990s to 1667.8 Mt in 2018 and tended to be saturated, with an average growth rate of 9.5% per year. Spatially, the south-central areas were the largest container of material stocks and generated the most demolition waste. The spatially explicit maps of building three-dimensional (3-D) form and vintage provide detailed information for architectural conservation and could support the decision-making for urban renewal planning. The spatiotemporal patterns of in-use material stocks and potential generation of construction and demolition waste (CDW) provide a benchmark of environmental risk assessment and potential secondary resources to reduce "original" material consumption, which could help alter urban renewal to an environmental-friendly and sustainable trajectory.

Uncovering the Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Urban Infrastructure Development: A High Spatial Resolution Material Stock and Flow Analysis

Abstract:Understanding the complexity and sustainability of infrastructure development is crucial for reconciling economic growth, human well-being, and environmental conservation. However, previous studies on infrastructure's material metabolism were mainly conducted on a global or national scale, due largely to lack of more spatially refined data, and thus could not reveal the spatial patterns and dynamics on a city scale. Here, we integrated material flow analysis (MFA) and geographical information system (GIS) data to uncover the spatiotemporal patterns of the material stocks and flows accompanying the infrastructure development at a high spatial resolution for the case of Shanghai, China. From 1980 to 2010, material stocks and waste output flows of Shanghai's infrastructure system exhibited a significant increase from 83 to 561 million metric tons (Mt) and from 2 to 17 Mt, respectively. Input flows peaked in 2005 because of the economic slowdown and stepped-up policies to cool the housing market. Spatially, the center and peri-urban areas were the largest container of material stocks and biggest generator of demolition waste, while suburban areas absorbed 58%-76% of material inputs. Plans to make the city more compact will enhance the service capacity of stocks but may also increase the use of more energy and emissions-intensive construction materials (e.g., steel). Prolonging the service lifetime of infrastructure through proper management and increasing the recycling and reuse rate of demolition waste are also identified as highly efficient strategies.

Abstract:The urban built environment has accumulated massive amounts of resources, which is the main "hot spot" of construction materials and energy consumption in cities. To effectively monitor and manage resources use and waste disposal toward sustainability, this study intended to explore different metabolic paths of the urban built environment, as well as strategies for new and old urban areas separately with the help of material stock and flow analysis. Based on snapshots of 2003, 2010, and 2017 and combined with big data, a four‐dimensional geographic information system buildings database of Lixia District in Jinan, China, was compiled for bottom‐up stock modeling. Finally, the environmental impact assessment of the buildings' demolition and disposal stage was carried out. The results showed that the building material stock was 142.31 Mt in 2017, with an increase of 69% from 2003. The reinforced concrete buildings increased rapidly from 2003 to 2017, especially in new urban areas, which has boosted demand for steel and cement by more than 150% during these 15 years. The material stock of the old urban area tends to be saturated, whereas the new urban area has experienced a rapid expansion with the material inflow four times as large as the material outflow. Potential recycling of waste concrete can reduce the generation of building demolition waste by 50%, save 0.15 km2 of land occupation, increase raw material substitution by nearly 10 times, and reduce CO2 emissions by 2.5 times.

Gridded Material Stocks in China Based on Geographical and Geometric Configurations of the Built-Environment

Abstract:Material stocks have created alternative perspectives in many environmental and climate studies. Their significance nonetheless may be under-explored, partially due to scarcity of more precise, timely and higher-resolution information. To address this limitation, our present study developed a gridded material stocks dataset for China in Year 2000 and 2020, by examining the geographical distribution and geometric configurations of the human-made stock-containing environment. The stocks of twelve materials embodied in five end-use sectors and 104 products and constructions were assessed at a resolution of 1 × 1 km grid. Material intensity in each product or construction component was carefully evaluated and tagged with its geometric conformation. The gridded stocks aggregately are consistent with the stock estimation across 337 prefectures and municipalities. The reliability of our assessment was also validated by previous studies from national, regional, to grid levels. This gridded mapping of material stocks may offer insights for urban-rural disparities, urban mining opportunity, and climate and natural disaster resilience.

Abstract:This research begins by summarising the principles of Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and its different dimensions from a methodological perspective. Afterwards, it applies a bottom-up method and temporal-spatial views analysis to urban construction material flow and stock with Geographical Information System (GIS) data. Due to a lack of availability of spatial data, GIS-based material flow and stock research are static (with data from only one year), limiting the extent to which scholars and policy makers can understand changes to the spatial structure of the urban environment and material metabolism that would have implications for sustainable urban policy. Therefore, a 4d-GIS method is developed in order to refine the spatial data and time series, addressing this gap and elucidating the urban stock variation over time. This study then introduces several cases of material flow and stock over space and time, showing that a 4d-GIS method is a powerful tool for revealing the evolution of construction material in buildings. It is also beneficial for estimating the lifetime of different cohorts which refers to buildings constructed in the same period, and for understanding the waste potential of demolition. This has the benefit of revealing the impact of socio-economic development on the material flow and stock and it draws out the challenges of speeding up societal metabolism towards sustainable development and provides an early warning for future waste management. This chapter summarises the principles of Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and its different dimensions from a methodological perspective. Material flow analysis (MFA) has been one of the main tools used to uncover socio-economic metabolisms through systematic assessment of the state and changes of flows and stock of materials within a predefined spatial and temporal system boundary, further directing toward the management of resources, the environment and waste. In MFA, the material is a general notion, including chemical substances and compounds, mixtures, components and goods. The conventional economy-wide material flow analysis is helpful to reveal the evolution of input, output and stock within the city, to diagnose which part is unsustainable, and to examine the linkage with the socioeconomic growth. This chapter presents the primary findings from a 4d-Geographical Information System material stock and flow estimation of cases in Japan, China, the United Kingdom and Italy, reflecting the metabolism of construction material and its change alongside socio-economic development.
An integrated material metabolism model for stocks of urban road system in Beijing, China

Abstract:Rapid urbanization has greatly altered the urban metabolism of material and energy. As a significant part of the infrastructure, urban roads are being rapidly developed worldwide. Quantitative analysis of metabolic processes on urban road systems, especially the scale, composition and spatial distribution of their stocks, could help to assess the resource appropriation and potential environmental impacts, as well as improve urban metabolism models. In this paper, an integrated model, which covered all types of roads, intersection structures and ancillary facilities, was built for calculating the material stocks of urban road systems. Based on a bottom-up method, the total stocks were disassembled into a number of stock parts rather than obtained by input-output data, which provided an approach promoting data availability and inner structure understanding. The combination with GIS enabled the model to tackle the complex structures of road networks and avoid double counting. In the case study of Beijing, the following results are shown: 1) The total stocks for the entire road system reached 159 million tons, of which nearly 80% was stored in roads, and 20% in ancillary facilities. 2) Macadam was the largest stock (111 million tons), while stone mastic asphalt, polyurethane plastics, and atactic polypropylene accounted for smaller components of the overall system. 3) The stock per unit area of pedestrian overcrossing was higher than that of the other stock units in the entire system, and its steel stocks reached 0.49 t/m(2), which was 10 times as high as that in interchanges. 4) The high stock areas were mainly distributed in ring-shaped and radial expressways, as well as in major interchanges. 5) Expressways and arterials were excessively emphasized, while minor roads were relatively ignored. However, the variation of cross-sectional thickness in branches and neighborhood roads will have a significant impact on the scale of material stocks in the entire road system.

Abstract:The rapid economic development is inevitably accompanied with resource depletion and environment degradation. To understand the status of material metabolism and identify effective solutions for environmental protection in China, this study develops a novel and standardized methodology for accounting regional material flows. Compared with previous studies, the proposed methodology takes renewable energy into consideration and provides a more accurate estimation method for non-metallic minerals used for construction. Then, the proposed approach is used to assess the material metabolism of four municipalities in China during 1997-2017. The results show that the domestic extraction and domestic processed output experience an increasing trend and then appear to decrease at the end of study period. Furthermore, Chongqing consumes the largest amount of material with lowest resource utilization efficiency, while Shanghai is predicted to enjoy a generally decline in domestic material consumption per capita. Finally, some policy implications are achieved for sustainable development in China.

Abstract:As an open artificial ecosystem, the development of a city requires the continuous input and output of material and energy, which is called urban metabolism, and includes catabolic (material-flow) and anabolic (material-accumulation) processes. Previous studies have focused on the catabolic and ignored the anabolic process due to data and technology problems. The combination of remote-sensing technology and high-resolution satellite images facilitates the estimation of cumulative material amounts in urban systems. This study focused on persistent accumulation, which is the metabolic response of urban land use/urban land expansion, building stock, and road stock to land-use changes. Building stock is an extremely cost-intensive and long-lived component of cumulative metabolism. The study measured building stocks of Jinchang, China’s nickel capital by using remote-sensing images and field-research data. The development of the built environment could be analyzed by comparing the stock of buildings on maps representing different time periods. The results indicated that material anabolism in Jinchang is a distance-dependent function, where the amounts and rates of material anabolism decrease with changes in distance to the central business district (CBD) and city administration center (CAC). The cumulative metabolic rate and cumulative total metabolism were observed to be increasing, however, the growth rate has decreased.

High-Resolution Mapping of the Urban Built Environment Stocks in Beijing

Abstract:Improving our comprehension of the weight and spatial distribution of urban built environment stocks is essential for informing urban resource, waste, and environmental management, but this is often hampered by inaccuracy and inconsistency of the typology and material composition data of buildings and infrastructure. Here, we have integrated big data mining and analytics techniques and compiled a local material composition database to address these gaps, for a detailed characterization of the quantity, quality, and spatial distribution (in 500 m X 500 m grids) of the urban built environment stocks in Beijing in 2018. We found that 3621 megatons (140 ton/cap) of construction materials were accumulated in Beijing's buildings and infrastructure, equaling to 1141 Mt of embodied greenhouse gas emissions. Buildings contribute the most (63% of total, roughly half in residential and half in nonresidential) to the total stock and the subsurface stocks account for almost half. Spatially, the belts between 3 and 7 km from city center (approximately 5 t/m(2)) and commercial grids (approximately 8 t/m(2)) became the densest. Correlation analyses between material stocks and socioeconomic factors at a high resolution reveal an inverse relationship between building and road stock densities and suggest that Beijing is sacrificing skylines for space in urban expansion. Our results demonstrate that harnessing emerging big data and analytics (e.g., point of interest data and web crawling) could help realize more spatially refined characterization of built environment stocks and highlight the role of such information and urban planning in urban resource, waste, and environmental strategies.

Abstract:Adapting a national-scale material flow analysis framework to an urban scale is difficult, so no researcher has yet developed a unified accounting and measurement framework at this scale. However, because cities represent major concentrations of resource consumption and pollution emission, this framework is urgently necessary. Based on the national-scale material flow analysis framework, we focused on the urban-scale material flow and divided a city into 8 compartments to develop a bottom-up accounting framework for urban material flow analysis using these compartments. The measurement and conversion methods for data that cannot be obtained directly from government statistical data were described. Two categories of material flow analysis indexes are explained, namely scale indexes and evaluation indexes. A case study of 13 cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region of China demonstrated its application and the insights it provides. In the case cities, Tangshan, Tianjin, Handan showed the largest material consumption and fast rates of growth, and manufacturing is an important source of material consumption. The framework and methods developed in this study provide accounting templates that can be used for material flow analysis of cities at different stages of development both in China and elsewhere, thereby permitting a more unified and comparable accounting and analysis between studies.

Dynamic material flow and stock analysis of residential buildings by integrating rural–urban land transition: A case of Shanghai

Abstract:<p>In rapidly developing countries, such as China, considerable quantities of construction materials have been mobilized with the fast expansion of urban areas. The rural to urban land use transition, especially the upgrade and redevelopment of original rural areas, is a noted driver of material flows. This rural–urban land transition should be incorporated into material flow and stock analyses to provide a more accurate analysis. In this study, a dynamic material flow and stock model that integrates the historical rural–urban land transition was developed to explore the quantity of material stocks and demolition waste from residential buildings in Shanghai—the largest megacity in China from 1950 to 2100. Our results show that the material stocks from residential buildings in Shanghai increased 41-fold from 1950 to 2010, about 957 MMT (million metric tons), and is estimated to be saturated around 2040. Material stocks have experienced asynchronized growth in rural areas, central urban areas, and rural–urban land transition zones (RULT zones) in Shanghai. Until 2040, the RULT zones in Shanghai will be the largest material repository (62%), followed by central urban areas (20%), and rural areas (18%). The amount of demolition waste, which accounted for 10 MMT in 2010, is expected to peak at 29 MMT in 2060s. This suggests the need for a deliberate investment plan to increase waste treatment capacity. In addition, the dominant component of demolition waste will shift from brick to concrete after 2020s. The RULT zones will contribute two-thirds of demolition waste to Shanghai until the 2060s. If we do not consider the reality of the physical status of buildings in RULT zones, the demolition waste will be underestimated by the maximum of 57% in 2003 in urban areas. The key findings on the trend of construction and demolition (C&D) waste generation and the significant contribution of RULT zones can be used as a reference for the strategic planning of treatment facilities. This research framework can be also used to estimate the amount of C&D waste in other fast-developing cities in China and other countries.</p>

Exploring the Relationships Between Urban Form Metrics and the Vegetation Biomass Loss under Urban Expansion in China

Abstract:Compact urban form has been applied as a strategy to reduce the loss of green space that occurs from development, but the impact of this policy on the provision of green space still presents many uncertainties. This research investigated the statistical relationship between urban form indicators and the loss of vegetation biomass to understand the response of quality green space provision to changes in urban morphology. A methodology combining multi-source data assimilation, statistical analysis, and spatial analysis was adopted for the Yangtze River Delta cities of China. First, six urban metrics were selected to describe the shape and layout of urban patches in each city, and the total biomass loss index was then introduced as a parameter. The values of urban metrics and total biomass loss index were calculated for the 50 Yangtze River Delta cities. Second, ordinary least squares regression and geographically weighted regression analyses were then used to establish a quantitative relationship between total biomass loss index and urban form indicators. The results revealed an extremely negative correlation between total biomass loss index and the three urban variables of Richard compactness, density gradient, and the Gini coefficient; moreover, the parameter estimates for the three variables in the geographically weighted regression model were local and varied over space. Third, the mechanisms by which the urban form influences biomass loss were discussed and different urban form planning strategies for particular urban areas were suggested. In conclusion, compact urban form in a clustered layout of urban areas with a dense central agglomeration was verified to be ecologically superior and conducive to green space protection. For the physical interpretation of the statistical relationship between urban morphology and vegetation loss, the interface effect of urban agglomeration on vegetation merits further study.

Abstract:Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science, Ahead of Print. Anthropogenic stocks are increasingly seen as potential reserves for secondary resources, which has led to a rapid development in research of urban metabolic systems. With regard to buildings and their associated material stocks and flows, one of the most critical shortcomings in the state-of-the-art is the knowledge gap for drivers, dynamics, patterns and linkages that affect the urban metabolism. This paper is premised on the idea that urban planning stirs up these material flows, so it should also adopt their sustainable management on its agenda. It presents an approach that highlights the intertwined nature of changing urban morphology and building material stocks and flows in space and time. An analytical framework, based on the principles of material flow analysis, is provided for an integrated, spatiotemporal study of urban morphology and urban metabolism of buildings, using building and plot data as the input and identifying internal processes of the urban metabolism as the output. The identified processes include greenfield development, infill construction, building replacement and shrinkage, each of which can be expected to have tangible yet very different material and environmental consequences in the form of embodied materials and CO2. The use of the framework is demonstrated with a case study in the Finnish city of Vantaa in 2000–2018. The case study shows patterns pertaining to a growing city unrestricted by geographic or historic factors, manifested as vast greenfield developments and replacement of a notably young building stock. As sustainability may soon call into question both these strategies, uncovering the material consequences of a city's past urban (re)development strategies lay the foundation for using the presented approach proactively in planning support, in pursuit of more circular economy-based and low carbon cities.

Abstract:Summary The stock‐driven dynamic material flow analysis (MFA) model is one of the prevalent tools to investigate the evolution and related material metabolism of the building stock. There exists substantial uncertainty inherent to input parameters of the stock‐driven dynamic building stock MFA model, which has not been comprehensively evaluated yet. In this study, a probabilistic, stock‐driven dynamic MFA model is established and China's urban housing stock is selected as the empirical case. This probabilistic dynamic MFA model has the ability to depict the future evolution pathway of China's housing stock and capture uncertainties in its material stock, inflow, and outflow. By means of probabilistic methods, a detailed and transparent estimation of China's housing stock and its material metabolism behavior is presented. Under a scenario with a saturation level of the population, urbanization, and living space, the median value of the urban housing stock area, newly completed area, and demolished area would peak at around 49, 2.2, and 2.2 billion square meters, respectively. The corresponding material stock and flows are 79, 3.5, and 3.3 billion tonnes, respectively. Uncertainties regarding housing stock and its material stock and flows are non‐negligible. Relative uncertainties of the material stock and flows are above 50%. The uncertainty importance analysis demonstrates that the material intensity and the total population are major contributions to the uncertainty. Policy makers in the housing sector should consider the material efficiency as an essential policy to mitigate material flows of the urban building stock and to lower the risk of policy failures.

Abstract:The accurate quantification of construction waste (CW) is prerequisite for achieving zero-waste in the building sector. This study employs a Spatial Material Flow Analysis model considering building life cycle to estimate the spatio-temporal dynamics of CW in Nanjing, China, over two decades. Additionally, it employs an ARIMA model for forecasting CW generation over the forthcoming decade. During 2000 to 2020, Nanjing's CW witnessed a CW increase from 0.8 to 59.0 Tg, predominantly comprising non-metallic materials. Meanwhile, the spatial distribution of CW has widened, accompanied by the emergence of numerous CW hotspots, in parallel with economic and population growth. Future projections suggest a continuous yet decelerating increase in CW generation, highlighting a significant opportunity for resource recovery. The application of this hybrid approach not only enhances CW management accuracy but also supports the broader goal of fostering sustainable building practices. This research expects to enlighten the stakeholders committed to advancing sustainable construction and waste management strategies in the context of zero-waste buildings.

Therefore, understanding the material consumption status and the underlying mechanisms for typical Chinese urban agglomerations will support efforts to promote regional resource‐utilization sustainability. In this study, we analyzed material consumption and its structure in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (Jing–Jin–Ji) urban agglomeration from 2000 to 2015 and traced the sources of material consumption and underlying processes from a metabolic perspective. We also identified the main contributors and key drivers behind the changes of consumption during this period. The urban agglomeration's total consumption increased 2.2 times compared to the 2,000 level during the study period, with metallic minerals accounting for the largest proportion. Highly developed cities, including Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Tangshan, and Handan, consumed the largest amounts of materials and generated the most wastes. These cities also relied heavily on both internal and external resources and exchanged materials frequently among their metabolic compartments. Economic activity was the strongest contributor to the increased material consumption, followed by the population increase, whereas decreasing material‐consumption intensity (increased efficiency) restrained the growth of material consumption somewhat. Our application of the material‐flow accounting framework at the scale of an urban agglomeration provides support for future research on material consumption in other typical urban agglomerations, where it can provide support for policy development to alleviate regional resource shortages.</p>

Abstract:Enhancing the understanding on the temporal and spatial distribution of urban building material metabolism is crucial for informing urban resource, waste, and environmental management. However, this endeavor is often impeded by inaccuracies and inconsistencies in the typology and material composition data of buildings. Taking Macao as a case, this study established a 4D GIS-MFA-LCA model and compiled a local material composition database to address these gaps, for a detailed characterization of the quantity, quality, and temporal-spatial distribution of the urban building stocks and flows in Macao. The results show that between 1980 and 2020, the building materials stock (BMS) in Macao increased from 6.3 to 55.1 Mt (equaling 1.1 to 14.7 Mt CO2 eq of embodied carbon emission), accompanied by corresponding increases of 0.03 Mt to 0.7 Mt of building waste (BW). The tourism and entertainment area exhibited the fastest increasing rate of BMS in Macao. IPAT analysis shows that the economy, population growth and demographic changes have been the driving forces for BMS in Macao. The results of this study can help cities take effective measures toward achieving a circular economy and highlight the role of such information and urban planning in urban building resource, waste, and management strategies.

Abstract:The patterns of material accumulation in buildings and infrastructure accompanied by rapid urbanization offer an important, yet hitherto largely missing stock perspective for facilitating urban system engineering and informing urban resources, waste, and climate strategies. However, our existing knowledge on the patterns of built environment stocks across and particularly within cities is limited, largely owing to the lack of sufficient high spatial resolution data. This study leveraged multi-source big geodata, machine learning, and bottom-up stock accounting to characterize the built environment stocks of 50 cities in China at 500 m fine-grained levels. The per capita built environment stock of many cities (240 tonnes per capita on average) is close to that in western cities, despite considerable disparities across cities owing to their varying socioeconomic, geomorphology, and urban form characteristics. This is mainly owing to the construction boom and the building and infrastructure-driven economy of China in the past decades. China's urban expansion tends to be more "vertical" (with high-rise buildings) than "horizontal" (with expanded road networks). It trades skylines for space, and reflects a concentration–dispersion–concentration pathway for spatialized built environment stocks development within cities in China. These results shed light on future urbanization in developing cities, inform spatial planning, and support circular and low-carbon transitions in cities.

Abstract:The growing amount of electronic waste (e-waste) poses considerable risks to the environment and human health, especially when treated inadequately. However, it is difficult to assess the significance of these issues without quantitative understanding of spatiotemporal patterns of e-waste generation. This paper proposes a new model to estimate in-use stock of electric household appliances (HAs) and e-waste generation at the level of 1 km × 1 km grids by coupling geographic information system (GIS) and material flow analysis (MFA). We took Xiamen, a rapidly urbanized city in China, as a case and the results showed that demands for HAs increased from 1980, peaked in 2016, and then declined. In-use HAs exhibited a logistic growth and significantly increased in both spatial extent and intensity. E-waste generation kept rising until 2019, and its spatial center expanded outward from downtown to suburban areas. Our study highlights that a dynamic and spatial model is useful for designing effective policies for e-waste management by providing spatiotemporal details of e-waste types and generation magnitudes and explicitly recognizing generation hotspots in cities.

Quantifying the Relationship between Urban Form and the Lost Vegetation Biomass under Urban Expansion Based on GWR Model

Abstract:Under the background of global urbanization, optimization of urban morphological pattern is one of important issues for the sustainable urban form. The vegetation biomass in the city is a parameter standing for multiple environmental targets, including carbon sequestration, climate regulation, pollution reduction etc. For the process of urban expanding to encroach on vegetation, the lost vegetation biomass quantitatively connects with the urban morphological pattern. This paper established the quantitative relationship between six selected urban form indicators and biomass loss caused by urban expansion (TBLI), with the aim of providing a specific optimization to the urban space configuration. The results indicate that six urban form indicators in fifty cities had their own characteristics, in which the Richardson compactness (0.452~0.402), density gradient (0.034~0.326) and Gini coefficient (0.527~0.995) show that the compactness of city center in large cities were generally lower than those of small or medium-sized cities. TBLI in Yangtze River Delta had reached 2.97 Tg during the study period, in which biomass loss in small or medium-sized cities were less than those of large cities, for example, Shanghai (0.529 Tg). TBLI was significantly related to urban form indicators, OLS model (TBLI=0.00051 [Urban land increment]-0.09127 [Richardson compactness]-0.11352 [density gradient]-0.05313 [Gini coefficient]+0.118) represented the average estimation of biomass loss in the whole region. However, topographic conditions and land cover types were the main causes of spatial non-stationarity. Through urban form optimization, such as enhancing circularity of external contour of Nanjing-Zhenjiang-Yangzhou urban agglomeration, improving the compactness of elements in Taizhou urban agglomeration, and breaking the balance distribution pattern in southeast part of Zhejiang Province, biomass loss could be reduced significantly. GWR model was superior to the OLS model on fitting accuracy and visualization of modeling parameters.
