Abstract:The paper aims to answer the question: if and how non-Newtonian fluids may be compared in their mechanical action when used for hydraulic fracturing? By employing the modified formulation of the PKN problem we obtain its simple analytical solutions in the cases of perfectly plastic and Newtonian fluids. Since the results for shear thinning fluids are intermediate between those for these cases, the obtained equation for the fracture length suggests a criterion of the equivalence of various shear thinning fluids for the problem of hydraulic fractures. We assume fluids equivalent in their hydrofracturing action, when at a reference time they produce fractures of the same length. The equation for the fracture length translates the equivalence in terms of the hydraulic fracture length and treatment time into the equivalence in terms of the properties of a fracturing fluid (behavior and consistency indices). Analysis shows that the influence of the consistency and behavior indices on the fracture length, particle velocity and propagation speed is quite similar when considering the PKN and KGD models despite the models refer to different plain-strain states. It appears that from the mechanical point of view, the differences between thinning fluids are not significant; they may be taken into account when wishing to have some quantity to be greater (less) at small (large) time. We conclude that a choice of a fracturing fluid is to be made mostly from technological and/or economic considerations under the condition that the compared fluids are equivalent in their mechanical effect according to the suggested criterion.

Abstract:High flow rate, water-driven hydraulic fractures are more common now than ever in the oil and gas industry. Although the fractures are small, the high injection rate and low viscosity of the water, lead to high Reynolds numbers and potentially turbulence in the fracture. Here we present a semi-analytical solution for a blade-shaped (PKN) geometry hydraulic fracture driven by a turbulent fluid in the limit of zero fluid leak-off to the formation. We model the turbulence in the PKN fracture using the Gaukler-Manning-Strickler parametrization, which relates the the flow rate of the water to the pressure gradient along the fracture. The key parameter in this relation is the Darcy-Weisbach friction factor for the roughness of the crack wall. Coupling this turbulence parametrization with conservation of mass allows us to write a nonlinear pde for the crack width as a function of space and time. By way of a similarity ansatz, we obtain a semi-analytical solution using an orthogonal polynomial series. Embedding the asymptotic behavior near the fracture tip into the polynomial series, we find very rapid convergence: a suitably accurate solution is obtained with two terms of the series. This closed-form solution facilitates clear comparisons between the results and parameters for laminar and turbulent hydraulic fractures. In particular, it resolves one of the well known problems whereby calibration of models to data has difficulty simultaneously matching the hydraulic fracture length and wellbore pressure.

Abstract:The problem of fluid withdrawal from a reservoir into a well or injection of fluid from a well into a reservoir in the presence of a hydraulic fracture perpendicular to the wellbore is considered in the constant flow rate regime. Analytical solutions that describe the evolution of pressure in the fracture at a constant reservoir-to-well fluid flow rate are obtained. Approximate solutions are constructed using the method of successive change of stationary states (SCSS). A comparison of the numerical results of the exact and approximate solutions shows that these solutions are almost identical. The influence of the reservoir features of the stratum and fracture on the evolution of pressure in the fracture and well is analyzed.

Abstract:Abstract Hydraulic fracturing fracture propagation is the main factor affecting the fracturing effect. In view of the more diversified selection of fracturing fluid, the problem of fracture propagation in non‐Newtonian fluid fracturing is often encountered in fracturing. In this paper, the influencing factors of fracture propagation of non‐Newtonian fluid fracturing fluid are analyzed. Based on PKN model, a three‐dimensional fracture propagation model considering the rheology and filtration of fracturing fluid is established, the better fracture shape simulation results are given, and the effects of fluid properties, rock physical properties, and injection parameters on fracture propagation are analyzed in detail. The research shows that (1) in the process of fracture propagation, the fracture length and width gradually increase, and the corresponding pressure in the fracture also increases. The overall increase trend is that the growth is rapid in the initial stage of fracturing and gradually slows down in the later stage. (2) The greater the consistency coefficient and rheological index, the greater the fracture width and pressure in the fracture, and the easier it is to form wide fracture. The larger the filtration coefficient is, the weaker the fracture forming ability is, and the fracture width, length, and pressure in the fracture are reduced. (3) Rock physical properties have a certain influence on fracture propagation, Young's modulus has a great influence on fracture propagation, while Poisson's ratio has little influence on it. However, the larger the Young's modulus, the more difficult the fracture is to expand, and the smaller the corresponding fracture width. (4) The larger the pump injection rate, the larger the fracture size and the higher the pressure in the fracture. The model can provide a theoretical basis for fracturing design and fracture shape prediction.

Use of a speed equation for numerical simulation of hydraulic fractures

Abstract:The paper treats the propagation of a hydraulically driven crack. We explicitly write the local speed equation, which facilitates using the theory of propagating interfaces. It is shown that when neglecting the lag between the liquid front and the crack tip, the lubrication PDE yields that a solution satisfies the speed equation identically. This implies that for zero or small lag, the boundary value problem appears ill-posed when solved numerically. We suggest e - regularization, which consists in employing the speed equation together with a prescribed BC on the front to obtain a new BC formulated at a small distance behind the front rather than on the front itself. It is shown that - regularization provides accurate and stable results with reasonable time expense. It is also shown that the speed equation gives a key to proper choice of unknown functions when solving a hydraulic fracture problem numerically.

Abstract:Permeability is a nonlinear and non-local function of the intimate coupling between pore fluid flow and solid deformation in porous media. A class of related problems involves the effect of fluid injection or withdrawal on the transport properties of geomaterials. This paper presents an analytical solution for the nonlinear and non-local problem of fluid flow through a disk-shaped porous elastic inclusion below the free surface of an elastic half-space. The solution accounts for the following nonlinear mechanisms: (i) variations in the permeability coefficient due to the flow-induced deformation of the inclusion; (ii) the inertial losses of the pore fluid flow. The former and latter mechanisms are formulated using the Green's function for a dilatation centre in an elastic half-space and the Darcy–Forchheimer equation for fluid flow through porous media, respectively. An analytical perturbation solution to the considered problem is developed and validated against the numerical finite element solution to the same problem. The described nonlinear mechanisms are represented by two dimensionless parameter groups. The extreme values of these dimensionless groups govern the solution asymptotic behaviours mimicking the special-case solutions in which either mechanism is forced to vanish. The applied aspects of the solution are demonstrated through the wellbore performance index parameter that quantifies the subsurface rock ability to deliver the pore fluid toward or away from a wellbore in a porous reservoir. Unlike the linear models, the presented nonlinear solution captures the observed dependence of the performance index on the wellbore flow rate.

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate the influence of the pore pressure to the development of a hydraulically-driven fracture in a poroelastic medium. We present a novel numerical model for propagation of a planar hydraulic fracture and prove its correctness by demonstration of the numerical convergence and by comparison with known solutions. The advantage of the algorithm is that it does not require the distinguishing of the fracture's tips and reconstruction of the numerical mesh according to the fracture propagation. Next, we perform a thorough analysis of the interplay of fluid filtration and redistribution of stresses near the fracture. We demonstrate that the fracture length decreases with the increase of the Biot's number (the parameter that determines the contribution of the pore pressure to the stress) and explain this effect by analysing the near-fracture pore pressure, rock deformation and stresses. We conclude, that the correct account for the fluid exchange between the fracture and the rock should be based not only on physical parameters of the rock and fluid, but also on the analysis of stresses near the fracture.

Abstract:In the paper, we propose a new effective mathematical formulation and resulting universal numerical algorithm capable of tackling various HF models in the framework of a unified approach. The presented numerical scheme is not limited to any particular elasticity model or crack propagation regime. Its basic assumptions are: i) proper choice of independent and dependent variables (with the direct utilization of a new one - the reduced particle velocity), ii) tracing the fracture front by use of the speed equation which can be integrated in a closed form and sets an explicit relation between the crack propagation speed and the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion of the crack opening, iii) proper regularization techniques, iv) improved temporal approximation, v) modular algorithm architecture. The application of the new dependent variable, the reduced particle velocity, instead of the usual fluid flow rate, facilitates the computation of the crack propagation speed from the local relation based on the speed equation. As a result, the position of the crack front is accurately determined from an explicit formula derived from the speed equation. The underlying ideas employed in the algorithm are combined together producing a robust and efficient numerical scheme. Its performance is demonstrated using classical examples of 1D models for hydraulic fracturing: PKN and KGD under various fracture propagation regimes. Solution accuracy is verified against dedicated analytical benchmarks and other solutions available in the literature. Most of the ideas developed here, can be directly extended to more general 2D and 3D cases.
A phase-field model for hydraulic fracture nucleation and propagation in porous media

Abstract:Many geo-engineering applications, e.g., enhanced geothermal systems, rely on hydraulic fracturing to enhance the permeability of natural formations and allow for sufficient fluid circulation. Over the past few decades, the phase-field method has grown in popularity as a valid approach to modeling hydraulic fracturing because of the ease of handling complex fracture propagation geometries. However, existing phase-field methods cannot appropriately capture nucleation of hydraulic fractures because their formulations are solely energy-based and do not explicitly take into account the strength of the material. Thus, in this work, we propose a novel phase-field formulation for hydraulic fracturing with the main goal of modeling fracture nucleation in porous media, e.g., rocks. Built on the variational formulation of previous phase-field methods, the proposed model incorporates the material strength envelope for hydraulic fracture nucleation through two important steps: (i) an external driving force term, included in the damage evolution equation, that accounts for the material strength; (ii) a properly designed damage function that defines the fluid pressure contribution on the crack driving force. The comparison of numerical results for two-dimensional (2D) test cases with existing analytical solutions demonstrates that the proposed phase-field model can accurately model both nucleation and propagation of hydraulic fractures. Additionally, we present the simulation of hydraulic fracturing in a three-dimensional (3D) domain with various stress conditions to demonstrate the applicability of the method to realistic scenarios.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>In this work, we extend a phase-field approach for pressurized fractures to non-isothermal settings. Specifically, the pressure and the temperature are given quantities and the emphasis is on the correct modeling of the interface laws between a porous medium and the fracture. The resulting model is augmented with thermodynamical arguments and then analyzed from a mechanical perspective. The numerical solution is based on a robust semi-smooth Newton approach in which the linear equation systems are solved with a generalized minimal residual method and algebraic multigrid preconditioning. The proposed modeling and algorithmic developments are substantiated with different examples in two- and three dimensions. We notice that for some of these configurations manufactured solutions can be constructed, allowing for a careful verification of our implementation. Furthermore, crack-oriented predictor–corrector adaptivity and a parallel implementation are used to keep the computational cost reasonable. Snapshots of iteration numbers show an excellent performance of the nonlinear and linear solution algorithms. Lastly, for some tests, a computational analysis of the effects of strain–energy splitting is performed, which has not been undertaken to date for similar phase-field settings involving pressure, fluids or non-isothermal effects.</p>

On the parallel solution of hydro-mechanical problems with fracture networks and contact conditions

Abstract:The paper presents a numerical method for simulating flow and mechanics in fractured rock. The governing equations that couple the effects in the rock mass and in the fractures are obtained using the discrete fracture-matrix approach. The fracture flow is driven by the cubic law, and the contact conditions prevent fractures from self-penetration. A stable finite element discretization is proposed for the displacement-pressure-flux formulation. The resulting nonlinear algebraic system of equations and inequalities is decoupled using a robust iterative splitting into the linearized flow subproblem, and the quadratic programming problem for the mechanical part. The non-penetration conditions are solved by means of dualization and an optimal quadratic programming algorithm. The capability of the numerical scheme is demonstrated on a benchmark problem for tunnel excavation with hundreds of fractures in 3D. The paper's novelty consists in a combination of three crucial ingredients: (i) application of discrete fracture-matrix approach to poroelasticity, (ii) robust iterative splitting of resulting nonlinear algebraic system working for real-world 3D problems, and (iii) efficient solution of its mechanical quadratic programming part with a large number of fractures in mutual contact by means of own solvers implemented into an in-house software library.

A nonlocal model for fluid-structure interaction with applications in hydraulic fracturing

Abstract:Modeling important engineering problems related to flow-induced damage (in the context of hydraulic fracturing among others) depends critically on characterizing the interaction of porous media and interstitial fluid flow. This work presents a new formulation for incorporating the effects of pore pressure in a nonlocal representation of solid mechanics. The result is a framework for modeling fluid-structure interaction problems with the discontinuity capturing advantages of an integral based formulation. A number of numerical examples are used to show that the proposed formulation can be applied to measure the effect of leak-off during hydraulic fracturing as well as modeling consolidation of fluid saturated rock and surface subsidence caused by fluid extraction from a geologic reservoir. The formulation incorporates the effect of pore pressure in the constitutive description of the porous material in a way that is appropriate for nonlinear materials, easily implemented in existing codes, straightforward in its evaluation (no history dependence), and justifiable from first principles. A mixture theory approach is used (deviating only slightly where necessary) to motivate an alteration to the peridynamic pressure term based on the fluid pore pressure. The resulting formulation has a number of similarities to the effective stress principle developed by Terzaghi and Biot and close correspondence is shown between the proposed method and the classical effective stress principle.

Abstract:The propagation of hydraulic fractures is highly influenced by the geological structure of the reservoir in unconventional reservoirs, such as natural fractures. In this paper, a new fluid–solid coupling dynamic model was built which presents the failure mechanism of hydraulic fracture with pre-existing simple and complex natural fractures. The cohesive element method and the maximum principal stress fracture criterion were used in the new model. An analysis was conducted to investigate the impact of various factors, including encounter angle, in situ stress, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio, on the propagation of hydraulic fractures. The simulation results indicate that the encounter angle and the in situ stress are the main factors affecting the fracture morphology. When the encounter angle and the in situ stress difference are small, hydraulic fractures propagate along natural fractures. When the elastic modulus is small, it is advantageous for the advancement of both hydraulic and natural fractures. The Poisson's ratio has a slight effect on the fracture propagation pattern.

Abstract:A universal particle velocity based algorithm for simulating hydraulic fractures, previously proposed for Newtonian fluids, is extended to the class of shear-thinning fluids. The scheme is not limited to any particular elasticity operator or crack propagation regime. The computations are based on two dependent variables: the crack opening and the reduced particle velocity. The application of the latter facilitates utilization of the local condition of Stefan type (speed equation) to trace the fracture front. The condition is given in a general explicit form which relates the crack propagation speed (and the crack length) to the solution tip asymptotics. The utilization of a modular structure, and the adaptive character of its basic blocks, result in a flexible numerical scheme. The computational accuracy of the proposed algorithm is validated against a number of analytical benchmark solutions.

Abstract:A mathematical model based on a composite geometry was developed for a non-Newtonian power-law fluid in a fracture-dominated reservoir. An analytic solution in Laplace space for this reservoir model was used to determine the type-curves for various composite parameters. The dynamic behavior of the bottom hole pressure at early and later stages was also analyzed. Therefore, the model can be used to analyze the fluid flow and fractures in some polymer-flooding reservoirs.

Abstract:Propagation of a fluid-driven crack in an impermeable linear elastic medium under axis-symmetric conditions is investigated in the present work. The fluid exerting the pressure inside the crack is an incompressible Newtonian one and its front is allowed to lag behind the propagating fracture tip. The tip cavity is considered as filled by fluid vapors under constant pressure having a negligible value with respect to the far field confining stress. A novel algorithm is here presented, which is capable of tracking the evolution of both the fluid and the fracture fronts. Particularly, the fracture tracking is grounded on a recent viscous regularization of the quasi-static crack propagation problem as a standard dissipative system. It allows a simple and effective approximation of the fracture front velocity by imposing Griffith's criterion at every propagation step. Furthermore, for each new fracture configuration, a non linear system of integro-differential equations has to be solved. It arises from the non local elastic relationship existing between the crack opening and the fluid pressure, together with the non linear lubrication equation governing the flow of the fluid inside the fracture.

Abstract:This paper describes a KGD-type model of a hydraulic fracture created by injecting fluid in weak, poorly consolidated rocks. The model is based on the key assumption that the hydraulic fracture is propagating within a domain where the hydraulic fields are quasi-stationary. By further assuming a negligible toughness, the fracture is shown to grow as a square root of time. The asymptotic fracture propagation regimes at small and large time are constructed and the transient solution is computed by solving a nonlinear system of algebraic equations formulated in terms of the fracture aperture. At early time the fracture is hydraulically invisible and the injection pressure increases with time $t$ as $\log t$, while at late time leak-off from the borehole is negligible and the injection pressure decreases as $t^{-1/4}$. According to this model, the peak injection pressure observed when injecting fluid in weak, poorly consolidated rocks should not be interpreted as indicating a breakdown of the formation, but rather as marking the transition between two asymptotic flow regimes. The timescale that legislates the transition between the small and large time asymptotic regimes is shown to be a strongly nonlinear function of a dimensionless injection rate.
Analytical solutions from integral transforms for transient fluid flow in naturally fractured porous media with and without boundary flux

Abstract:A kind of problems of radially symmetric transient fluid flow in a medium with a geometry similar to a hollow-disk can be addressed using the finite Hankel transform. However, the inverse Hankel transform [G. Cinelli, Int. J. Engng. Sci., 3, 539 (1965)] works well only for homogeneous boundary conditions. We use the finite Hankel transform, together with the Laplace transform, to solve partial dfferential equations with inhomogeneous boundary conditions. With this aim, we propose a method to obtain an analytical solution of the problem of fluid flow in a finite naturally fractured reservoir with inner and outer boundaries having constant and time-dependent conditions, respectively. We assume that the reservoir has a producing well, with either constant terminal pressure or constant terminal rate, while the outer boundary has either an influx recharge or constant pressure. Using these case studies, we show that a part of the inverse transformation given by Cinelli can be expressed as closed formulas for long time solutions, at the same time that make it possible to capture the inhomogeneous condition and speed up the convergence of solutions. For Neumann-Neumann conditions, we show that the inverse expression of Cinelli is incomplete. In addition, an analysis of the flow characteristic curves in a reservoir with influx recharge is presented. The drawdown pressure curves are used to elucidate the statement that the pressure drop of a single-porosity reservoir with influx recharge resembles the flow behavior in a double-porosity closed reservoir, establishing a criteria to distinguish between both.

A multi-resolution approach to hydraulic fracture simulation

Abstract:We present a multi-resolution approach for constructing model-based simulations of hydraulic fracturing, wherein flow through porous media is coupled with fluid-driven fracture. The approach consists of a hybrid scheme that couples a discrete crack representation in a global domain to a phase-field representation in a local subdomain near the crack tip. The multi-resolution approach addresses issues such as the computational expense of accurate hydraulic fracture simulations and the difficulties associated with reconstructing crack apertures from diffuse fracture representations. In the global domain, a coupled system of equations for displacements and pressures is considered. The crack geometry is assumed to be fixed and the displacement field is enriched with discontinuous functions. Around the crack tips in the local subdomains, phase-field sub-problems are instantiated on the fly to propagate fractures in arbitrary, mesh independent directions. The governing equations and fields in the global and local domains are approximated using a combination of finite-volume and finite element discretizations. The efficacy of the method is illustrated through various benchmark problems in hydraulic fracturing, as well as a new study of fluid-driven crack growth around a stiff inclusion.
