Abstract:In this article we consider a version of the geography question for simply-connected symplectic 4-manifolds that takes into account the divisibility of the canonical class as an additional parameter. We also find new examples of 4-manifolds admitting several symplectic structures, inequivalent under deformation and self-diffeomorphisms of the manifold.

Abstract:We produce simply connected, minimal, symplectic Lefschetz fibrations realizing all the lattice points in the symplectic geography plane below the Noether line. This provides a symplectic extension of the classical works populating the complex geography plane with holomorphic Lefschetz fibrations. Our examples are obtained by rationally blowing down Lefschetz fibrations with clustered nodal fibers, the total spaces of which are potentially new homotopy elliptic surfaces. Similarly, clustering nodal fibers on higher genera Lefschetz fibrations on standard rational surfaces, we get rational blowdown configurations that yield new constructions of small symplectic exotic $4$-manifolds. We present an example of a construction of a minimal symplectic exotic $\mathbb{CP} \# 5\,\overline{\mathbb{CP}}$ through this procedure applied to a genus-$3$ fibration.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometries associated with 3-forms of various orbital types on a symplectic 6-manifold. We show that there are extremely rich geometric structures attached to certain unstable 3-forms arising naturally from degeneration of Calabi-Yau structures, which in turn provides us a new perspective towards the SYZ conjecture. We give concrete examples and demonstrate that the limiting behavior of the Type IIA flow can be used to detect canonical geometric structures on symplectic manifolds.

Abstract:The geography problem is usually stated for simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds. When the first cohomology is nontrivial, however, one can restate the problem taking into account how close the symplectic manifold is to satisfying the conclusion of the Hard Lefschetz Theorem, which is measured by a nonnegative integer called the degeneracy. In this paper we include the degeneracy as an extra parameter in the geography problem and show how to fill out the geography of symplectic 4-manifolds with Kodaira dimension 1 for all admissible triples.

Abstract:Despite spectacular advances in defining invariants for simply connected smooth and symplectic 4-dimensional manifolds and the discovery of effective surgical techniques, we still have been unable to classify simply connected smooth manifolds up to diffeomorphism. In these notes, adapted from six lectures given at the 2006 Park City Mathematics Institute Graduate Summer School on Low Dimensional Topology, we will review what we do and do not know about the existence and uniqueness of smooth and symplectic structures on closed, simply connected 4-manifolds. We will focus on those surgical techniques that have been effective in altering smooth and symplectic structures and the Seiberg-Witten invariants that are used to distinguish them. In the last lecture we will then pose a possible classification scheme and test it on a few examples.

Abstract:We study the existence of symplectic and conformal symplectic (codimension-1) foliations on closed manifolds of dimension . Our main theorem, based on a recent result by Bertelson–Meigniez, states that in dimension at least 7 any almost contact structure is homotopic to a conformal symplectic foliation. In dimension 5 we construct explicit conformal symplectic foliations on every closed, simply-connected, almost contact manifold, as well as honest symplectic foliations on a large subset of them. Lastly, via round-connected sums, we obtain, on closed manifolds, examples of conformal symplectic foliations which admit a linear deformation to contact structures.

Abstract:Examples of aspherical closed symplectic 4-manifolds are presented whose Sullivan minimal models are (1,n)-formal for any n, without being formal. They have as cohomology algebra, signature, canonical class, those of a product of a closed Riemann surface of genus g>1 and an elliptic curve, and the fundamental group, resp. $A_{\infty}$ category defined by their de Rham complex, is isomorphic to that of the product of surfaces up to brackets of order n+1, resp. products of order n+1. Nevertheless, the manifolds do not admit any holomorphic structure.

Abstract:Symplectic and Poisson geometry emerged as a tool to understand the mathematical structure behind classical mechanics. However, due to its huge development over the past century, it has become an independent field of research in differential geometry. In this lecture notes, we will introduce the essential objects and techniques in symplectic geometry (e.g Darboux coordinates, Lagrangian submanifolds, cotangent bundles) and Poisson geometry (e.g symplectic foliations, some examples of Poisson structures). This geometric approach will be motivated by examples from classical physics, and at the end we will explore applications of symplectic and Poisson geometry to Lie theory and other fields of mathematical physics.

On a symplectic generalization of a Hirzebruch problem

Abstract:Motivated by a problem of Hirzebruch, we study $8$-dimensional, closed, symplectic manifolds having a Hamiltonian torus action with isolated fixed points and second Betti number equal to $1$. Such manifolds are automatically positive monotone. Our main result concerns those endowed with a Hamiltonian $T^2$-action and fourth Betti number equal to $2$. We classify their isotropy data, (equivariant) cohomology rings and (equivariant) Chern classes, and prove that they agree with those of certain explicit Fano $4$-folds with torus actions. Moreover, under more general assumptions, we prove several finiteness results concerning Betti and Chern numbers of $8$-dimensional, positive monotone symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian torus action.

Abstract:For a large class of 3-manifolds with taut foliations, we construct an action of $\pi_1(M)$ on $\mathbb{R}$ by orientation preserving homeomorphisms which captures the transverse geometry of the leaves. This action is complementary to Thurston's universal circle. Applications include the left-orderability of the fundamental groups of every non-trivial surgery on the figure eight knot. Our techniques also apply to at least 2598 manifolds representing 44.7% of the non-L-space rational homology spheres in the Hodgson-Weeks census of small closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

Abstract:We show that any effective isometric torus action of maximal rank on a compact Riemannian manifold with positive (sectional) curvature and maximal symmetry rank, that is, on a positively curved sphere, lens space, complex or real projective space, is equivariantaly diffeomorphic to a linear action. We show that a compact, simply connected Riemannian 4- or 5-manifold of quasipositive curvature and maximal symmetry rank must be diffeomorphic to the 4-sphere, complex projective plane or the 5-sphere.

Abstract:This paper investigates the geometric structures and properties of 8-dimensional manifolds with Spin(7)-holonomy. We focus on the characterization and implications of 4-planes within these manifolds, which are endowed with an almost symplectic structure compatible with the Spin(7)-structure. We provide a detailed analysis of the differential forms defining these structures, including the Cayley 4-form and its stabilization under the Spin(7) group actions. Furthermore, we explore the concept of mirror duality within the context of exceptional holonomy, elucidating the relationship between dual structures and their topological constraints. By examining the conditions under which mirror duality arises, we enhance the understanding of the interplay between Spin(7)-structures and symplectic geometry. This endeavor contributes to our deeper understanding of the intricate symmetries and topological properties of these remarkable manifolds.

Abstract:Cosymplectic and normal almost contact structures are analogues of symplectic and complex structures that can be defined on 3-manifolds. Their existence imposes strong topological constraints. Generalized geometry offers a natural common generalization of these two structures: $B_3$-generalized complex structures. We prove that any closed orientable 3-manifold admits such a structure, which can be chosen to be stable, that is, generically cosymplectic up to generalized diffeomorphism.
