Abstract:Advances in direct laser writing to attain super-resolution are required to improve fabrication performance and develop potential applications for nanophotonics. In this study, a novel technique using single-color peripheral photoinhibition lithography was developed to improve the resolution of direct laser writing while preventing the chromatic aberration characteristics of conventional multicolor photoinhibition lithography, thus offering a robust tool for fabricating 2D and 3D nanophotonic structures. A minimal feature size of 36 nm and a resolution of 140 nm were achieved with a writing speed that was at least 10 times faster than existing photoinhibition lithography. Super-resolution and fast scanning enable the fabrication of spin-decoupled metasurfaces in the visible range within a printing duration of a few minutes. Finally, a subwavelength photonic crystal with a near-ultraviolet structural color was fabricated to demonstrate the potential of 3D printing. This technique is a flexible and reliable tool for fabricating ultracompact optical devices.

Abstract:Coloration is essential for enhancing visual aesthetics and facilitating information communication, but it is difficult to apply to highly complex surfaces. Efficient manufacturing of 3D printed colored products is particularly challenging, given the arbitrary nature of the surfaces. We accomplish this goal with 3D/4D color printing using a photoprintable resin containing a free radical initiator, photocurable monomers, a photoacid generator, and an acid-sensitive dye. The free radical initiator is activated with a long wavelength light (405 nm) for 3D/4D photoprinting. Independently, the photoacid generator is triggered with a shorter wavelength light (365 nm) to activate acid-sensitive dye for coloration. This allows decoupling 3D/4D printing with coloration to yield geometrically complex 3D objects with designable surface color patterns as a highly efficient yet simple way to produce colored 3D objects.
High-speed laser writing of structural colors for full-color inkless printing

Abstract:It is a formidable challenge to simultaneously achieve wide gamut, high resolution, high-speed while low-cost manufacturability, long-term stability, and viewing-angle independence in structural colors for practical applications. The conventional nanofabrication techniques fail to match the requirement in low-cost, large-scale and flexible manufacturing. Processing by ultrashort lasers can achieve extremely high throughput while suffering from a narrow gamut of 15% sRGB or angle-dependent colors. Here, we demonstrate an all-in-one solution for ultrafast laser-produced structural colors on ultrathin hybrid films that comprise an absorbent TiAlN layer coating on a metallic TiN layer. Under pulsed laser irradiation, the absorption behaviors of the TiAlN-TiN hybrid films are tailored by photothermal-induced oxidation on the topmost TiAlN. The oxidized films exhibit double-resonance absorption, which is attributed to the non-trivial phase shifts both at the oxide-TiAlN interface, and at the TiAlN-TiN interface. By varying the accumulated laser fluence to modulate the oxidation depth, an unprecedented large gamut of 90% sRGB is obtained. Our highly reproducible printing technique manifests angle-insensitive colors the variation of Hue is <0.14pi when viewing angles changing from 6 to 60. The full-color printing speed reaches to 1.4 cm2/s and the highest printing resolution exceeds 25000 dpi. The durability of the laser-printed colors is confirmed by fastness examination, including salt fog, double-85, light bleaching, and adhesion tests. These features render our technique to be competitive for high-throughput industrial applications.

Three-layer Structured Soft Particles to Construct Photonic Paper Exhibiting Responsive Spatio-Temporal Color Patterns

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs), which generate vivid colors from periodic physical structures, have attracted considerable attention. However, it is still highly challenging to produce large-scale PC films with high mechanical performance. To address the challenge, a new strategy to fabricate PC films from soft structured latex particles instead of widely used hard particles is reported. The soft latex particles are designed to have a three-layer structure: a responsive poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) corona, hard polystyrene (PSt) shell and soft poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PnBA) core. Such latex particles with easily-tunable and well-defined structures are synthesized from RAFT emulsion polymerization. Thanks to the softness, PCs can be easily achieved by latex casting on various substrates without pre-treatment, leading to a dense, crack-free, and mechanically robust PC film. The as-prepared PC films of the particles with PnBA around 55 wt% can generate vivid colors when the "inks" of water and hydrophilic liquids are applied. The full colors can be achieved by tuning particle size or pH value. Taking advantage of the responsive properties to hydrophilic liquids with different volatilities, both temporary and permanent patterns can be constructed on the PC films, leading to spatio-temporal colorful patterns. The method is simple, scalable-up, and versatile, showing great potentials for practical applications.
Free-form Surface-Oriented Five-Axis Single-Point Color Printing Technology.

Abstract:Two-dimensional inkjet technology has made great progress in colorful plane printing. However, color printing technology for three-dimensional model is currently only at the exploratory stage; there are few reports on this issue. In this article, a free-form surface-oriented five-axis single-point printing technology with exclusive color nozzle is proposed. The single-point color nozzle consists of four print heads: prints cyan, magenta, yellow, and black pigment. For high-efficiency color printing, each print head prints on the same single point when the color nozzle moves along the surface. The method of color printing along the surface normal direction is proposed as normal direction printing mode. The algorithm of print point generation is introduced, and the path planning method of self-adaptive slicing and self-adaptive printing filling is proposed. In addition, a five-axis single-point printing platform is designed. Experiments are done to demonstrate the feasibility of the printing system.

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PC) patterns with tunable and changeable nonvolatile structural colors printed from a single ink are of great interest for optical products but have rarely been reported because most inks can only output one respective structural color. Herein, we propose a facile yet effective kinetically controlled self-assembly strategy to address this challenge. An ink formulation containing supramolecular block copolymers (SBCPs) is developed. SBCP patterns were printed by direct-ink-writing followed by solvent annealing to generate different structural colors by simply controlling the annealing time. The self-assembly kinetic regime suggests that different colors result from various kinetically trapped metastable states. In turn, the variation in structural color enables "visualization" of the self-assembly dynamics. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these kinetically trapped structures exhibit different responsive color-change behaviors. In addition, this kinetic control strategy can be synergistic with thermodynamic control to extend the color range. This study provides a facile yet effective solution for well-designed PC patterns with tunable, responsive, and unfading colors printed from the simplest single-nozzle printer with a single colorless ink, presenting great potential in broad applications, including information storage, encryption, and anti-fake.

Abstract:Inkless photonic paper has shown great potential as an alternative to traditional paper due to its unique structural color, which is dye-free and non-photobleaching. However, it is still highly challenging to produce large-area photonic crystal paper, and its angle dependence, complicated printing procedure, and difficulty of high-resolution printing have greatly limited its applications. To address these challenges, we developed a new UV printing strategy using amorphous structured inverse opal PEGDA photonic paper. The photonic paper is prepared using an amorphous assembly of colloidal SiO 2 particles as templates, which are fabricated by spray coating dispersions of SiO 2 particles with the addition of carbon black. The photonic paper possesses structural color with low angle independency when the observation angle varies from 0° to 40°, and the unvivid structural color can be tuned in the whole visible region by exposure to UV radiation for different amounts of time, providing a fast, convenient and high-resolution printing technique. Through a chromatic-printing-like method using a series of different masks, multi-color printing is also realized. The printed images can be further protected from UV irradiation using a layer of PET film, which provides a method to store the printings for a longer time in a harsh environment.

Abstract:Printing stable color with a lithography-free and environment-friendly technique is in high demand for applications. We report a facile strategy of ultrafast laser direct writing [ULDW) to produce large-scale embedded structural colors inside transparent solids. The diffraction effect of gratings enables effective generation of structural colors across the entire visible spectrum. The structural colors inside the fused silica glass have been demonstrated to exhibit excellent thermal stability under high temperature up to 1200°C, which promises that the written information can be stable for long time even with unlimited lifetime at room temperature. The structural colors in the applications of coloring, anti-counterfeiting, and information storage are also demonstrated. Our studies indicate that the presented ULDW allows for fabricating large-scale and high thermal-stability structural colors with prospects of three-dimensional patterning, which will find various applications, especially under harsh conditions such as high temperature.
Photochromic Metal–Organic Framework for High-Resolution Inkless and Erasable Printing

Abstract:Inkless and erasable printing as a new technology has received intense attention in reducing paper waste and environmental hazards caused by the use of large amounts of ink. However, achieving high-resolution printing by inkless and erasable printing for practical applications remains a huge challenge. Herein, a new metal-organic framework (MOF) has been synthesized, which exhibits a reversible photochromic behavior. None of the unpaired electrons of metal ions and a unique three-dimensional network hinder electron transfer between the ligands and metal nodes, as well as between the ligands themselves, which are conducive to prolonging the photo-generated color lifetime and suitable for inkless and erasable printing. By virtue of the proper photo-generated color lifetime, strong contrast color before and after light irradiation, and reversible color transformation, a high-resolution printing content for inkless and erasable printing can be achieved by light irradiation. Notably, the paper coated with this MOF can be used for printing not only simple patterns such as pictures but also even texts for practical applications, surpassing other photochromic MOF materials for inkless and erasable printing, and almost comparable to ink and laser printing in terms of practicality and resolution. In addition, the MOF-coated paper can be reused for multiple cycles without significant deterioration.

Abstract:Abstract Structural colors provide a promising visualization with high color saturation, iridescent characteristics, and fade resistance. However, pragmatic uses are frequently impeded by complex manufacturing processes for sophisticated nanostructures. Here, we report a facile emulsion-templating strategy to produce crescent-shaped microparticles as structural color pigments. The micro-crescents exhibit brilliant colors under directional light originating from total internal reflections and optical interferences in the absence of periodic nanostructures while being transparent under ambient light. The colors are finely tunable by adjusting the size of the micro-crescents, which can be further mixed to enrich the variety. Importantly, the pre-defined convex surface secures high stability of colors and enables structural coloration on target surfaces through direct deposition as inks. We anticipate this class of nanostructure-free structural colorants is pragmatic as invisible inks in particular for anti-counterfeiting patches and color cosmetics with distinctive impressions due to low-cost, scalable manufacturing, unique optical properties, and versatility.

Abstract:Significance We propose a printable structural color ink composed of cholesteric cellulose liquid crystals together with gelatin and a thermal-responsive hydrogel. The ink is endowed with vivid structural colors and printability due to its constituents. Based on this, we print a series of graphics and three-dimensional (3D) objects with vivid color appearances. Moreover, the printed objects possess dual thermal responsiveness, which results in visible color change around body temperature. These performances, together with the biocompatibility of the constituents, indicate that the present ink represents a leap forward to the next-generation 3D printing and would unlock a wide range of real-life applications.

Abstract:To face the challenge of the fast, large area, and high-precision manufacturing for flexible structural color films, a strategy based on soft lithography to fabricate polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) structural color films was proposed in this paper. The large area periodic structures as the template were obtained by means of laser interference lithography. After soft lithography, SEM images showed that the morphology and period are completely inversed with the templates. The colors of the films have an obvious angle dependence which was proved by an angle-resolved spectrometer(ARM), in which the peak position of the reflectance spectrum changed ∼267 nm as the angle increasing from 10° to 25° for the period ∼2.126 μm. In addition, the peaks of reflectance spectra have also an obvious redshift of ∼162 nm with increasing elongation ratio up to 40 %. Furthermore, the reflection peak of the flexible film will stably change between ∼697 nm and ∼617 nm before and after stretching from 0 to 40 % for 11 times. In conclusion, we explore an efficient way with the fast, large area, and high precision to fabricate flexible structural color films in the atmospheric environment, showing the potential application in optical anti-counterfeiting and mechanical sensor.

Abstract:An information encryption strategy based on the printed total internal reflection structural color and the machine learning algorithm, is developed. This strategy possesses the advantages of low‐cost, high precision, high capacity, and dynamic modulation, which is highly promising for a range of applications such as information encryption, data storage, and anti‐counterfeiting. Stimuli‐responsive structural‐color materials have received widespread attention in information encryption due to the significant color changes under different stimuli. However, the trade‐off between the capacity of information input, security level, cost, and large‐area manufacturing greatly limits the application of structural colors in encryption. Herein, dynamic high‐capacity and high‐resolution encryption are achieved by implementing printed total internal reflection (TIR) structural color and computer‐aided image recognition. The printed TIR microstructures are prepared with relative humidity (RH) responsive polymer, which form a heterogeneous wettability system, and can exhibit vibrant color variation with humidity. As the implemented RH is changed, the printed microstructures will expand or shrink precisely, enabling a full‐color modulation across the visible light range. With the color change, each structural‐color pixel can be specifically encoded, allowing for this to encrypt dynamic information within the same pattern at different RHs. Furthermore, This study can precisely integrates tremendous different pixels and easily prepare various encrypted patterns, which guarantee the high‐capacity information input in a low‐cost way. Moreover, through computer programming and algorithm reading, the structural‐color patterns can be decoded and decrypted in real‐time, thus offering great potential for further encryption, anti‐counterfeiting, multiplexing encoding, and data storage.

Abstract:Recently, coloring based on nanostructure-light interaction has attracted much attention, because it has many advantages over pigment-based conventional coloring in terms of being non-toxic and highly durable in the environment, and providing high resolution. The asymmetric Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity absorber is the most manufacturable structure among coloring structures because it is simply produced and easily tunable. However, it cannot be applied practically because of the lack of a manufacturing technique that enables simultaneous fabrication of multi-color structures with different heights. Here, the fabrication of colored reflective characters based on various asymmetric FP absorbers with micrometer-scale pixel size are reported. Various cavities with different thicknesses are fabricated in a single step using UV imprint lithography and a simple deposition process. UV/visible spectroscopy is used to characterize the fabricated FP resonator. This absorber demonstrates high absorption, close to 90%, resulting in vivid colors with high resolution of 12700 DPI. It can be potentially used in reflective color displays field, functionalized color decorations, and security color patterns area. It is believed that this study would open up new possibilities for high density color printing in practical industry by introducing cost effective nanoimprint lithography technology.

Abstract:Structural colors originate from the physical interaction between light and specific micro-or nanostructured matters. They have gained significant scientific and industrial interest due to their intriguing properties, including color purity, fade-resistance, and eco-friendliness. In particular, the printable structural colors offer unique advantages of simple fabrication processes, arbitrary shapes and scalability, which make them highly promising for various applications. In this review, we begin with an overview of the fundamental physical mechanisms of structural colors based on film interference, diffraction gratings, light scattering, total internal reflection, resonances, and Bragg diffraction, then systematically analyzes the printing strategies, such as three-dimensional (3D) printing, inkjet printing , laser printing, spray printing, and nanoimprinting. The third part focuses on the emerging applications, including display, information security, sensor, actuator, and solar energy harvesting. We conclude with a discussion of current challenges and potential future developments in the field of printable structural colors. This review aims to accelerate the development of new and innovative printable structural color for future applications.

Abstract:A digitalized lithography technique is employed to create pixelated photoresist microarrays of different heights, allowing precise control over the thickness of the liquid crystal (LC) layer. Simultaneously, dynamic and reversible tunability of the structural color is achieved by stimuli‐responsive LCs. Applications of this technology in optical steganography, color‐based thermal sensors, and optical coding are also explored. Structural colors are widespread in nature and have become an important component of the lives. Considerable efforts have been made toward reversible color tuning, which underpins intriguing applications, including color displays, anti‐counterfeiting, and information encryption. However, the limited size, complicated fabrication processes, and low modulation speeds of structural colors are the main obstacles to their further development. Herein, a facile method to realize dynamically tunable structural colors is presented, which are enabled by the pixelated programming of soft materials on thickness. Pixelated photoresist microarrays with different heights are obtained using a digitalized lithography technique, enabling delicate control over the thickness of the liquid crystal (LC) layers. Stimuli‐responsive LCs endow structural colors with dynamic and reversible tunability and exhibit remarkable switching speeds with external stimuli. The proposed strategy sheds new light on dynamically tunable structural colors and promotes the development of optical anti‐counterfeiting, thermal sensors, and advanced information encryption.

Abstract:Structural color, a color generated based on physical principles, has broad applications such as displays, optical sensors, and anti-counterfeiting. Traditional methods for producing structural colors are often complex and time-consuming, whereas spray-coating colloidal self-assembly offers a simple and controllable alternative. However, due to the high-pressure atomization process, colloidal inks often form amorphous photonic structures (APSs), making it challenging to precisely control the assembly of colloidal particles on substrates to achieve ordered structures. By rationally designing the composition of colloidal mixed solutions, controlling particle concentration, and adjusting evaporation temperatures, it is possible to effectively regulate the assembly of colloidal particles and obtain angle-dependent iridescent colors. This work proposes a simple spray-coating process that enables the control of both ordered and disordered structures, with tunable optical properties, suitable for colloidal patterning on various substrates. This method not only simplifies the fabrication of photonic crystals (PCs) but also has broad potential, particularly in anti-counterfeiting, where it enables the creation of hard-to-replicate structured patterns with enhanced security.

Abstract:Inspired by natural examples of hydrochromicity, an ink is developed to "4D print" objects with environmentally responsive structural colors. The devices designed using this ink exploit their reversible response to water in two distinct manners: as color or shape changes. Additive manufacturing with stimuli‐responsive materials—4D printing—is a rapidly growing field, with direct ink writing allowing deposition of a wide variety of materials. The synthesis of a humidity‐sensitive cholesteric liquid crystal oligomer ink is reported. With the responsive cholesteric ink, demonstrator devices exhibiting the ink's "four dimensionality" are printed in disparate fashions: as a structural color change or as a preprogrammed deformation mode. After printing, the photonic ink changes color in response to atmospheric humidity, demonstrated as a hydrochromic coating precisely deposited atop a 3D‐printed beetle. After activation in aqueous acid, the beetle exhibits vibrant color shifts across the visible spectrum. Alternatively, a scallop‐inspired actuator with a 3D‐programmed structural color is selectively treated with acid, to allow reversible "opening" and "closing" when exposed to humid and dry air, respectively. The ink enables additive manufacturing of both monolithic and multimaterial stimuli‐responsive, shape‐changing, structurally colored objects, toward broad application of cholesterics in future "smart," 4D structurally colored devices.

A general ink formulation of 2D crystals for wafer-scale inkjet printing

Abstract:Structural colors based on the macro- or nanostructure formation are ubiquitous in nature, having great prospects in many fields as a result of their environmentally friendly and long-term stable characteristics compared to pigments or dyes. However, the current fabrication techniques still face challenges for the generation of high-quality structural color patterns, especially at the macroscale, in an efficient way. Here, we demonstrate a method that exploits a flexible scanning process of generating macropatterns to convert the contour profiles into well-defined sub-micrometer grating structures with unprecedented vivid structural colors, at high speed and low cost on the graphene oxide film. The nature of dynamic beam shaping of the laser line spot allows us to flexibly construct the complex patterns at high speed, in sharp contrast to the traditional point-by-point laser processing. Moreover, the multicolor display of the patterns can be carried out by simply modulating the laser polarization to change the orientation of the sub-micrometer structures, and this nanopainting strategy is further explored to flexibly design the composite image for potential anti-counterfeiting applications.
