Engineering Failure Analysis
Abstract:This work presents a novel room-temperature-cured epoxy resin (ER)-bonded sand system without water or cement additives and investigates its strength development and influencing factors, chemical resistance, and failure mechanism. The resistance to deterioration was assessed by immersing the specimens in water, 3.5 % sodium chloride, and 5 % sodium sulfate solutions . The pore structure and fracture surface morphology of the cured system with different aggregate water contents, ER contents, immersing solutions, and drying conditions were analyzed using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations. The results show that the ER-bonded sand system exhibits high early strength performance, achieving compressive and flexural strengths of approximately 100 MPa and 23 MPa respectively after three days with 10 wt% ER content, and the strength increases with higher ER content. The mechanical strength is greatly influenced by aggregate moisture content, decreasing rapidly as moisture content increases. The strength attenuation caused by immersing in different solutions can be restored to over 80 % by drying treatment. The strength-enhancing mechanisms of this system can be attributed to the synergistic effects of bridging, restraining, pore filling, and chemical bonding, while the main mechanisms that induce the fracture of this system include aggregate shear, aggregate pull-out, and fracture of the rigid resin chains. The research demonstrated the potential of using this system for emergency repairs and construction.
