Abstract:The development of solvent-free, metal-free, recyclable organic catalysts is required for the current chemical fixation of carbon dioxide converted into cyclic carbonates. With the goal of reducing the cost, time, and energy consumption for the coupling reaction of CO(2)and epoxides, a series of highly active heterogeneous catalysts, based on a thiourea and quaternary ammonium salt system, are synthesized by using a thiol-ene click reaction under ultraviolet light. Benefitting from synergistic interactions of the electrophilic center (thiourea) and the nucleophilic site (ammonium bromide), the catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic selectivity (99 %) for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with a diverse range of epoxides under mild conditions (1.2 MPa, 100 degrees C). Moreover, the catalyst can be easily recycled by facile filtration and reused for 5 times without noticeable loss of activity and selectivity. This work provides a potential heterogeneous catalyst for the conversion of carbon dioxide into high value-added chemicals with the combined advantages of low cost, easy recovery, and satisfactory catalytic properties.

Abstract:The electroreduction of carbon dioxide to hydrocarbons has been proposed as a promising way to utilize CO2 and maintain the ecosystem carbon balance. However, the selective reduction of CO2 to C-2 hydrocarbons is still challenging. In this study, a highly efficient heterostructured catalyst has been developed, composed of a carbon nitride (CN)-encapsulated copper oxide hybrid (CuxO/CN). The interaction between the metal and carbon nitride in the heterostructured catalysts improves the intrinsic electrical conductivity and the charge transfer processes at metal-support interfaces. A remarkable enhancement in the selectivity of hydrocarbons is achieved with these modified Cu-based electrocatalysts, with an onset potential of -0.4 V and high C2H4 faradaic efficiency of 42.2 %, and these catalysts can also effectively suppress H-2 evolution during the CO2 reduction reaction. This work provides a simple and cost-effective method for synthesizing CN-encapsulated catalysts that provides the possibility of efficiently converting CO2 into C-2 hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Selective capture of carbon dioxide as a C1 feedstock for the preparation of high‐value chemicals has been recognised as an important way to mitigate the crisis. In this work, a new heterogeneous catalyst, Cu@CP‐PII, was developed through the rational construction of an open‐pore organic skeleton, which is easy to synthesise and highly efficient. With the synergistic effect between the high CO2 affinity of the porous skeleton and the highly dispersed Cu(I) sites of the activated alkynes, it can be used for the efficient preparation of α‐methylene cyclic carbonates at ambient temperature and pressure. The structure and morphology were exhaustively characterised by Solid State 13C‐NMR, FT‐IR, XPS, TEM and N2 adsorption‐desorption tests, and this catalyst possessed a high surface area of 273.7 m2⸳g‐1 and uniformly dispersion of CuI. To test its catalytic activity, Cu@CP‐PII in an amount of only 0.4 mol% was used as a catalyst for the carboxylative cyclization reaction of propargylic alcohols with CO2, which resulted in substrate conversions up to 100% and yields greater than 99%. In addition, controlled experiments and mechanistic elucidation confirmed that anhydrous and low temperatures are necessary to achieve high selective control of the target product α‐methylene cyclic carbonates.

Abstract:The design and synthesis of efficient heterogeneous catalysts for catalytic conversion of CO2 are an important challenge. The novel zinc porphyrin polymer reported herein, [ZnPy+CPP‐BTA]I−, is synthesized from trans‐A2B2 porphyrin precursor 5,15‐(4‐carboxyphenyl)‐10,20‐(pyridyl)‐porphyrin (PyCPP) and 1,2,4,5‐benzenetetramine tetrahydrochloride (BTA), employing a sequential post‐synthetic methylation and metalation strategy. The newly synthesized zinc porphyrin polymer was well characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As bifunctional heterogeneous catalyst incorporated zinc porphyrin and nucleophile I−, [ZnPy+CPP‐BTA]I− shows good catalytic activity and recyclability for the cycloaddition reactions of epoxides and CO2 under lower CO2 initial pressure and cocatalyst‐free conditions. A novel zinc porphyrin polymer, [ZnPy+CPP‐BTA]I− synthesized as the heterogeneous catalyst for the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides, shows efficient catalytic activity and recyclability for the cycloaddition reactions of epoxides and CO2 under lower CO2 initial pressure and cocatalyst‐free conditions.

Abstract:A series of C sphere-loaded high-dispersion Cu nanoparticles (Cu/CS) was designed and prepared as cathode material for the electrocatalytic cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides to form cyclic carbonates at room temperature and normal pressure. Materials were prepared using a simple one-pot method combined with calcination under N2 atmosphere. A series of characterisation was conducted to determine the material characteristics, such as composition, content, morphology and structure. Results showed that Cu nanoparticles were dispersed evenly on the C sphere with high specific surface area (> 395 m2/g) and large pore volume (0.2 m3/g). Among them, the Cu/CS-II cathode material with a yield of 94.7% possessed the best catalytic effect for CO2 and propylene oxide to form propylene carbonate. The materials were found to have good universality by expanding different substrates. Moreover, the reuse of the cathode material without a remarkable reduction in yield indicated that the material had good stability.

Abstract:In the present study, we demonstrated the synthesis of copper oxychloride anionic benzotriazolium ionic liquid-modified periodic mesoporous organosilica PMO@ILCu2(OH)3Cl2(x) as efficient and green retrievable heterogeneous nanocatalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates via cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides. Compared to other nanocatalysts, a superior catalytic activity was observed with PMO@ILCu2(OH)3Cl2(1.0), giving excellent yields and selectivities under solvent- and cocatalyst-free conditions. We also found that the existence of intensification synergistic effects from the hydroxyl groups sites of periodic mesoporous organosilica and the active sites of the functionalized ionic liquid, resulting in the enhanced catalytic activity. The catalytic process displayed ease of recovery, excellent stability and recyclability for at least five runs without significant loss of its catalytic activity. The developed catalytic system is proven to be a powerful tool for the chemical fixation of CO2 with epoxides to produce the cyclic carbonates.Graphical abstractAn efficient protocol is described for producing cyclic carbonates in excellent yields and selectivities under cocatalyst- and solvent-free conditions by treating epoxides with carbon dioxide, promoted by copper oxychloride anionic benzotriazolium ionic liquid-modified periodic mesoporous organosilica.

Abstract:In order to effectively convert greenhouse gas CO2 into high value-added chemicals, simple and sustainable methods are urgently needed. In this study, a novel metal-anchored ionic porous organic polymer (M-iPOP) named Zn-HUT4 was synthesized via a very simple and low-cost synthesis process. Further investigation was conducted into the use of Zn-HUT4 as a heterogeneous catalyst in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epoxides. The obtained Zn-HUT4 catalyst had a rich porous structure and abundant metal anchor points, which can effectively promote mass transfer in the cycloaddition reaction and offer a substantial amount of Zn(II) ions as catalytic active sites. Using CO2/propylene oxide (PO) cycloaddition as a model reaction, the effect of a series of conditions on catalytic experiments was explored. The Zn-HUT4 catalyst had good recyclability and substrate universality.

Abstract:The chemical fixation of CO2 into value-added products has recently received much attention. One of the most well-known methods is the coupling of CO2 with epoxides to form cyclic carbonates. Although this field has progressed considerably, it is still a challenge to perform the reaction with atmospheric CO2 or flue gas. Herein we described the development of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine hydrobromide ([DMAPH]Br) as a highly efficient and recyclable catalyst for the formation of cyclic carbonates from atmospheric CO2 and epoxides. In the presence of 1 mol % of [DMAPH]Br, excellent conversions and selectivities for a broad range of terminal epoxides were achieved under solvent-free conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst could be recycled over five times without appreciable loss of catalytic activity. The excellent catalytic performance of [DMAPH]Br is attributed to the enhanced synergistic interplay of acidic proton and bromide to epoxides and CO2 through positive charge delocalization on its cation.
Controlling dual-positively charged pyrazolium ionic liquids for efficient catalytic conversion of CO2 into carbonates under mild conditions

Abstract:To address the ongoing rise in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, CO2 utilization presents a promising approach due to its ability to convert CO2 into valuable industrial products and enable carbon recycling. For this reason, a high-quality catalyst is required to ensure the effective activation and conversion of CO2. In this study, a series of dicationic pyrazolium ionic liquids (DPzILs) were first synthesized via a one-step process and employed as catalysts in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides, yielding cyclic carbonates. Among the synthesized DPzILs, [DMPz-6]I2 exhibited outstanding catalytic performance on diluted CO2 from simulated flue gas (60% CO2 in N2), achieving 94.1% PC yield and 100% selectivity under reaction conditions (100 °C and 10 bar CO2 pressure) without metal, co-catalyst, or solvent. The study investigated the effects of DPzILs structures, catalyst dosage, CO2 pressure, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the production of cyclic carbonates. Furthermore, [DMPz-6]I2 could be efficiently recovered and reused seven times without significant degradation of catalytic activity. It demonstrated significant adaptability to various epoxides. Structure-activity studies indicated that PO activation is synergistically facilitated by the presence of C3/C5 hydrogen from dual-pyrazolium cation rings tethered by alkyl chain lengths and a paired halide anion (I−/Br−/Cl−) in DPzILs. Finally, the reaction mechanism was investigated using FT-IR, 1H NMR, and DFT calculations.

Abstract:Single-component catalysts with integrated multiple reactive centers could work in concert to achieve enhanced activity tailored for specific catalytic reactions, but they remain underdeveloped. Herein, we report the construction of heterogeneous bimetallic porous coordination polymers (PCPs) containing both porphyrin and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) metal sites via the coordinative assembly of the NHC functionalities. Three heterobimetallic PCPs (TIPP-Zn-Pd, TIPP-Cu-Pd and TIPP-Ni-Pd) have been prepared to verify this facile synthetic strategy for the first time. In order to establish a cooperative action toward the catalytic CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides, an additional tetraalkylammonium bromide functionality has also been incorporated into these polymeric structures through the N-substituent of the NHC moieties. The resulting heterogeneous bimetallic catalyst TIPP-Zn-Pd exhibits the best catalytic performance in CO2 cycloaddition with styrene oxide (SO) under solvent-free conditions at atmospheric pressure and is applicable to a wide range of epoxides. More importantly, TIPP-Zn-Pd works smoothly and is recyclable in the absence of a cocatalyst under 1.0 MPa of CO2 at 60 °C. This indicates that TIPP-Zn-Pd is quite competitive with the reported heterogeneous catalysts, which typically require a high reaction temperature above 100 °C under cocatalyst-free conditions. Thus, this work provides a new approach to design heterogeneous bimetallic PCP catalysts for high-performance CO2 fixation under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:Catalytic fixation of greenhouse gas CO2 into value-added chemicals under mild conditions was deemed as an effective pathway for carbon emissions mitigation, though facing big challenges. Herein, a novel hydroxyl-ionic liquid functionalized metalloporphyrin (ZnTpyp-IL) catalyst bearing hydrogen bond donor (HBD), Lewis acidic and nucleophilic sites was fabricated and invested in the CO2 cycloaddition without additive or solvent. The integration of ionic liquid endowed the framework with strong surface affinity to enrich CO2 molecules, while the cooperative interplay of multiple active sites further promoted the high-selective conversion of epichlorohydrin (ECH). Under optimal conditions (100 °C, 1 MPa, 4 h), the yield of corresponding chloropropene carbonate (CPC) reached 97.1 % (turnover frequency (TOF) = 52.4 h-1), far superior to that of bare Tpyp (17.4 %). The preliminary kinetic studies revealed the lower activation energy (59.54 kJ/mol) needed to be overcome in the ring-opening process over ZnTpyp-IL. Moreover, a plausible dual-activation mechanism of hydrogen bonds and Zn centers for epoxides was proposed based on the density functional theory calculation (DFT) to explain the acceleration of rate-determining step. Coupled with the satisfactory reusability and substrate expansibility, the developed ZnTpyp-IL demonstrated its great potential as robust heterogeneous catalyst in the efficient utilization of C1 resource.

Abstract:Development of an effective catalytic system for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide to epoxides for the preparation of cyclic carbonates under mild conditions is of great importance. Herein, a mixture of zinc iodide, metal chlorides, and strong organic bases is demonstrated to be a useful catalytic system that works at room temperature under atmospheric pressure. The most efficient combination, zinc iodide-niobium chloride-7-methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (1.2-0.3-3.0 mol%), gave styrene carbonate (95%) from styrene oxide and CO2 (balloon) at 25 °C for 24 h. Another combination, zinc iodide-zinc chloride-1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (1.2-0.8-4.0 mol%), kept the catalytic activity for the preparation of propylene carbonate until the fourth run. Therefore, the reaction system was operationally simple, highly efficient, and proceeded under ambient conditions. The catalyst is composed of readily available reagents and is reusable. Thus, the method presented is a powerful tool for utilizing CO2 as the starting material for the production of valuable chemicals.

Abstract:With the excessive consumption of fossil fuels and the massive emission of CO 2 , it has led to a series of environmental crises posing a serious threat to sustainable development. Electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to ethylene helps solve these serious environmental crises. Herein, we report the synthesis of a copper-based electrocatalyst by pyrolysis of yolk-shell structured HKUST-1 with partial substitution of trimesic acid by benzimidazole(nitrogen source). The electrocatalyst exhibits an ethylene Faradic efficiency(FE) of 25.8% and a partial ethylene current density of 23.7 mA/cm 2 , in addition, the electrocatalyst can maintain stable performance during 10 h of electrolysis, which are all better than those of the electrocatalyst without nitrogen dopant. According to electrochemical measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), we propose that the nitrogen dopant plays an effective role in stabilizing Cu(I) species and promoting CO 2 molecules activation, as well as suppressing the reduction of Cu(I) species during electrolysis. Eventually, the performance of the electrocatalyst toward CO 2 RR is studied in a flow cell. This work provides a new route for the design of Cu-based electrocatalyst toward electrochemical CO 2 conversion into ethylene.

Abstract:The production of cyclic carbonates using CO 2 and epoxides has received great attention due to 100% atom utilization. Herein, novel imidazolium‐containing metalloporphyrins were synthesized as bifunctional catalysts for the cycloaddition reactions of epoxides and CO 2 . The reaction conditions were optimized and analyzed with the response surface methodology. Under the optimum condition using Zn‐porphyrin 1 as the catalyst, the turnover number (TON) and turnover number frequency (TOF) for the cycloaddition of CO 2 and ECH were 11,629 and 1,735, respectively. In addition, analysis of the RSM indicated that the CO 2 pressure had only a small impact on the yield. Based on this conclusion, the catalytic activity of 1 was further evaluated under mild conditions. Regardless of whether the CO 2 pressure is high or ambient, this Zn‐porphyrin exhibited an excellent performance with a high turnover number frequency.

Abstract:Converting CO2 emissions, powered by renewable electricity, to produce fuels and chemicals provides an elegant route towards a carbon-neutral energy cycle. Progress in the understanding and synthesis of Cu catalysts has spurred the explosive development of electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) technology to produce hydrocarbons and oxygenates; however, Cu, as the predominant catalyst, often exhibits limited selectivity and activity towards a specific product, leading to low productivity and substantial post-reaction purification. Here, we present a single-atom Pb-alloyed Cu catalyst (Pb1Cu) that can exclusively (similar to 96% Faradaic efficiency) convert CO2 into formate with high activity in excess of 1 A cm(-2). The Pb1Cu electrocatalyst converts CO2 into formate on the modulated Cu sites rather than on the isolated Pb. In situ spectroscopic evidence and theoretical calculations revealed that the activated Cu sites of the Pb1Cu catalyst regulate the first protonation step of the CO2RR and divert the CO2RR towards a HCOO* path rather than a COOH* path, thus thwarting the possibility of other products. We further showcase the continuous production of a pure formic acid solution at 100 mA cm(-2) over 180 h using a solid electrolyte reactor and Pb1Cu.

Abstract:The conversion of carbon dioxide into valuable cyclic carbonates has been of intensive interest owing to the 100% atomic economy. Herein,we developed a new synthesis method of CMP, obtained at room temperature which is one of the "dream reaction", possessing large surface areas (1356 m2/g) and exhibiting excellent CO2 capture(77.26 cm3/g at 273.15 K/1.00 bar). After loading cobalt acetate,we obtained Co-coordinated CMP (named as TBB-BPY-Co), exhibiting extraordinary activities (turnover frequencies of up to 250 h−1) for the coupling epoxides with CO2 forming cyclic carbonates at room temperature and atmospheric with free-solvent. Moreover, the heterogeneous catalyst showed even better catalytic efficiency than relevant homogeneous catalyst and a higher recyclability (up to 10 times). This study provided an effective and efficient strategy for the carbon dioxide conversion of industrial and economic value.

Ammonium zincates as suitable catalyst for the room temperature cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides

Abstract:We have recently shown that simple ammonium ferrates are competent catalyst for the cycloaddition reaction of CO 2 to epoxides under moderate reaction conditions (T = 100°C, P(CO 2 ) = 0.8 MPa). We report here that ammonium zincates of general formulae [TBA] 2 [ZnX 4 ] (TBA = tetrabutylammonium), simply obtained by treating an ethanolic solution of an appropriate zinc(II) salt with two equivalents of tetrabutylammonium halides, outperform ammonium ferrates in the synthesis of cyclic carbonates under milder reaction conditions (room temperature and atmospheric CO 2 pressure). Using [TBA] 2 [ZnBr 4 ] complex as homogeneous catalyst at 100°C and P(CO 2 ) = 0.8 MPa a 52% conversion of styrene oxide with complete selectivity in styrene carbonate in just 15 min was observed, corresponding to a Turnover frequency (TOF) of 416 h −1 . The same catalyst proved to be very active even at room temperature and atmospheric or very moderate CO 2 pressures (0.2 MPa), with a quite broad range of substrates, especially in the case of terminal epoxides, with high selectivity towards cyclic carbonate products. The difference in reactivity of terminal and internal epoxides could be exploited using 4-vinylcyclohexene dioxide, where the endocyclic epoxide remained untouched when reacted at room temperature and the formation of the di-carbonate product was observed only at harsher conditions. A multigram scale conversion of propylene oxide was achieved (46 mmol) and the catalyst also proved to be recyclable (3 cycles) by distillation of the product and subsequent addition of fresh reagent, maintaining high conversion values and complete selectivity for propylene carbonate. This simple zinc-based catalytic system, which outperform the recently reported iron-based one by working at much milder conditions, could represent a valuable prospect in both laboratory and industrial scale, combining an inherent cheapness and synthetic easiness that should be deeply considered when the goal is to give value to a waste product as CO 2 .
Mixed-Linker Zr-Metal-Organic Framework with Improved Lewis Acidic Sites for CO2 Fixation Reaction Catalysis

Abstract:Applying the mixed-linker strategy in synthesizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has drawn considerable attention as a heterogeneous catalyst owing to their easy synthesis and different functional ligands in their frameworks. Following this strategy, we have developed a mixed linker Zr(IV)-based MOF, [Zr6O4(OH)4(FUM)n(PZDC-NO2)6-n] (PZDC-NO2 = 4-nitro-3,5-pyrazoledicarboxylic acid, FUM = fumaric acid) denoted as MOF-801(PZDC-NO2) synthesized via this strategy which possess an electron-withdrawing group (-NO2) on secondary linkers. The MOF-801(PZDC-NO2) has been fully characterized via various analyses, such as Fourier transform infrared, powder X-ray diffraction, 13C/1H nuclear magnetic resonance, XPS, TGA, and N2 adsorption/desorption, SEM, EDX, etc. By considering the concurrent existence of acid-base active sites and the synergistic role of these sites, this mixed-linker MOF was used as a catalyst for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides under mild without-solvent conditions. MOF-801(PZDC-NO2) displays significant catalytic performance by producing the highest catalytic conversion of epoxide to cyclic carbonate (93%) with a turnover number of 130.7 in 8 h reaction time and 100 °C temperature under low-pressure CO2 pressure. The mixed-linker Zr-MOF exhibits exceptional stability and reusability, maintaining its structure and functionality after consecutive cycles of utilization. Finally, the reaction mechanism was further investigated by density functional theory calculations. The total energy of the reactants, intermediates, and products involved in the process.

Abstract:The integration of synergic hydrogen bond donors and nucleophilic anions that facilitates the ring-opening of epoxide is an effective way to develop an active catalyst for the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides. In this work, a new heterogeneous catalyst for the cycloaddition of epoxides and CO2 into cyclic carbonates based on dual hydroxyls-functionalized polymeric phosphonium bromide (PQPBr-2OH) was presented. Physicochemical characterizations suggested that PQPBr-2OH possessed large surface area, hierarchical pore structure, functional hydroxyl groups, and high density of active sites. Consequently, it behaved as an efficient, recyclable, and metal-free catalyst for the additive and solvent free cycloaddition of epoxides with CO2. Comparing the activity of PQPBr-2OH with that of the reference catalysts based on mono and non-hydroxyl functionalized polymeric phosphonium bromides suggested that hydroxyl functionalities in PQPBr-2OH showed a critical promotion effect on its catalytic activity for CO2 conversion. Moreover, PQPBr-2OH proved to be quite robust and recyclable. It could be reused at least ten times with only a slight decrease of its initial activity.

Abstract:The cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with epoxide (CCE) reaction stands out as one of the few feasible chemical processes for catalytically fixing CO2. Traditionally, halide anions were frequently used as cocatalysts for catalysis CCE reaction due to their excellent nucleophilic and leaving abilities. However, the halides were known for their corrosive effects on process reactors, and their treatment was a burden. Consequently, there was a substantial increase in demand for halide-free catalysis in the CCE reaction. Herein, a series of bifunctional catalysts were designed for CCE reactions. The reactions were assessed under conditions of 120 °C and 1 MPa, employing a catalyst loading of 0.5 mol% over 24 hours. The dual activation mechanism of the catalyst was confirmed through NMR titration and control experiments. As a bifunctional catalyst, the ion pair polarized the oxygen atom of the epoxide via H-bonding with N+–H, while the phenolate anion activated carbon dioxide simultaneously. This study introduced the pyridinium base binary organocatalyst, exemplifying a halide-free hydrogen bond donor (HBD) anion organocatalyst with broad applicability for CO2 utilization.
