Abstract:The productivity of agroecosystems and the effectiveness of fertilizers are largely determined by agroecological properties of land such as the soil, local climate, relief and biota, and by land management. In the Non-Chernozem landscape zone of Central Russia, many landscapes were shaped by former glacial periods. Soils have developed on Pleistocene and Holocene parent materials. Sod-podzolic soils (Derno-Podzols) and hydromorphic soils with a sandy texture are typical. They have a low content of mineral nutrients and humus and are strongly acidic. In order to assess the spatial heterogeneity of soil fertility and options for precision farming, we analyzed soil properties and crop productivity along a typical shallow catena. Soil properties in adjacent forests were also analyzed. Studies were conducted at the Vyatkino research site, located in the north of the Meshchera lowlands, in the vicinity of the city of Vladimir. Regardless of their position in the terrain, all pedons are characterized by alternating wetness and drought almost every year. The factors most relevant to the crop yield are the soil texture associated with the storage capacity for water and nutrients in the root zone. The lowest yields are obtained on sandy soils with content of physical clay less than 8%. The rate of fertilizer efficiency on those pure sandy soils is 2.2–4.3 times lower compared to sandy loams. These differences remain even when high doses of organic and mineral fertilizers are used. Therefore, differentiated use of fertilizers, along with agrochemical properties, should also take into account soil properties determining the agroecological types of land. Because of the suitable market position for Moscow and other cities in the region, the agricultural landscapes studied and their soils show good potential for productive and environmentally sound agriculture. Management tools for improving soil fertility and crop yields are available. The analyzed soil properties provide a basis for the sustainable agricultural improvement of soils in the agrolandscape.
