Abstract:Research at the frontier between optics and magnetism is revealing a wealth of innovative phenomena and avenues of exploration. Optical waves are demonstrating the capacity to induce ultrafast magnetism, while optical analogs of magnetic states, such as magnetic skyrmions, offer the prospect of novel spin-optical states. In this paper, we strengthen the synergy between light and magnetism by exploring the ability of plasmonic Neel skyrmions to create a stationary magnetic field within a thin gold film. We show that, when generated using a focused radially-polarized vortex beam, a plasmonic Neel skyrmion emerges as an optimum for inducing optomagnetism in a thin gold film. Optical skyrmions offer new degrees of freedom for enhancing and controlling optomagnetism in plasmonic nanostructures, with direct application in all-optical magnetization switching, magnetic recording, and the excitation of spin waves.

Abstract:Skyrmions are topological structures characterized by a winding vectorial configuration that provides a quantized topological charge. In magnetic materials, skyrmions are localized spin textures that exhibit unique stability and mobility properties, making them highly relevant to the burgeoning field of spintronics. In optics, these structures open new frontiers in manipulating and controlling light at the nanoscale. The convergence of optics and magnetics holds therefore immense potential for manipulating magnetic processes at ultrafast timescales. Here, we explore the possibility of generating skyrmionic topological structures within the magnetic field induced by the inverse Faraday effect in a plasmonic nanostructure. Our investigation reveals that a gold nanoring, featuring a dark mode, can generate counter-propagating photocurrents between its inner and outer segments, thereby enabling the magnetization of gold and supporting a skyrmionic vectorial distribution. We elucidate that these photocurrents arise from the localized control of light polarization, facilitating their counter-propagative motion. The generation of skyrmions through the inverse Faraday effect at the nanoscale presents a pathway towards directly integrating this topology into magnetic layers. This advancement holds promise for ultrafast timescales, offering direct applications in ultrafast data writing and processing.

Abstract:The optical vortex, an optical beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), has been demonstrated to be promising in manipulating magnetic structure and its dynamics in various systems. In this work, by using numerical and analytical methods, we investigate the optical vortex control of the ultrafast dynamics of skyrmion in antiferromagnets. It is shown that an isolated skyrmion can be generated/erased in an ultrashort time of $\ensuremath{\sim}\mathrm{ps}$ by beam focusing through the Zeeman effect. Subsequently, the OAM can be transferred to the skyrmion and results in its rotation. Different from the case of ferromagnets, the skyrmion rotation direction in antiferromagnets depends on the light frequency, allowing an easy control of the skyrmion rotation via tuning the frequency of light beam. Furthermore, the skyrmion Hall motion, driven by multipolar spin waves that are excited by optical vortex, is revealed in our calculations, demonstrating the dependence of the Hall angle on the OAM quantum number. This work unveils the interesting optical control of the skyrmion dynamics in antiferromagnets, which is a crucial step towards the development of magneto-optic and spintronic applications.

Abstract:The vector cross product and pseudoscalar dot products of electric (E) and magnetic (H) fields are separately finite in vacuum transverse electric and magnetic (TEM) plane waves, and angular momentum structured light. Current theories of interactions beyond the standard model of particle physics invoke non-zero dot(E,H) as the source term in the axion law that describes interactions with the cosmological dark matter axion particles outside of the quartet of Maxwells equations. The non-zero dot(E,H) also drives relativistic spin-charge magnetoelectric excitations of axion quasiparticles at a distinctively higher condensed matter scale in magnetic and topological materials. Yet, how to drive coherent dot(E,H) responses is unknown, and provides motivation to examine the field polarizations in structured light on a deep sub-diffraction limited spatial scale and sub-optical cycle temporal scale by ultrafast nonlinear photoemission electron microscopy. By analytical theory and ultrafast coherent photoemission electron microscopy, we image dot(E,H) fields in surface plasmon polariton vortex cores at subwavelength scales, where we find that the magnetoelectric relative to the dipole density is intensified on a ~10 nm diameter scale as a universal property of plasmonic vortex fields. The generation and nanoscale localization of dot(E,H) fields introduces the magnetoelectric symmetry class, having the parity and time reversal broken, but the joint parity-time reversal symmetry preserved. The ability to image the optical fields of plasmonic vortex cores opens the research of ultrafast microscopy of magnetoelectric responses and interactions with axion quasiparticles in solid state materials.

In this work, we propose that optical vortex can control skyrmion ultrafast in antiferromagnets using numerical and analytical methods. Isolated skyrmion can be generated/erased in a very short time ~ps by beam focusing. Subsequently, the OAM is transferred to the skyrmion and results in its rotation motion. Different from the case of ferromagnets, the rotation direction can be modulated through tuning the light frequency in antiferromagnets, allowing one to control the rotation easily. Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are chiral quasiparticles that show promise for future spintronic applications such as skyrmion racetrack memories and logic devices because of their topological stability, small size (typically $\sim3-500$ nm), and ultralow threshold force to drive their motion. On the other hand, the ability of light to carry and deliver orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the form of optical vortices has attracted a lot of interest. In this work, we predict a photonic OAM transfer effect, by studying the dynamics of magnetic skyrmions subject to Laguerre-Gaussian optical vortices, which manifests a rotational motion of the skyrmionic quasiparticle around the beam axis. The topological charge of the optical vortex determines both the magnitude and the handedness of the rotation velocity of skyrmions. In our proposal, the twisted light beam acts as an optical tweezer to enable us displacing skyrmions over large-scale defects in magnetic films to avoid being captured.

Abstract:The recently developed concept of optical skyrmions has introduced an exciting dimension to the emerging field of Poincaré engineering in optical lattices. There remains an unexplored territory in investigating system geometries to enhance the versatility of manipulating the topological landscape within optical lattices. Here, we present both experimental and theoretical evidence showcasing the periodic vectorial characteristics of field- and spin-based skyrmion lattices, generated by plasmonic vortices with varying topological charges. Our findings reveal that the geometric symmetry of the system plays a pivotal role in governing the periodic arrangement of these vortex patterns. Building upon this arrangement, the orbital–orbital coupling of plasmonic vortices gives rise to densely packed energy flow distributions, intricately bonded to topological charges. Consequently, this results in the formation of sublattices within the momentum space, each characterized by distinct k-vectors. Skyrmion and meron topologies, driven by the intrinsic spin–orbital coupling, are presented in these lattices. This proposed framework illuminates how symmetry serves as a fundamental tool in the manipulation of optical lattice topologies, opening up new avenues in fields ranging from optical trapping, laser writing, quantum gas microscopy, to electron quantum state control, each of which is poised to benefit from these nontrivial advances.

Abstract:Abstract Exploring material magnetization led to countless fundamental discoveries and applications, culminating in the field of spintronics. Recently, research effort in this field focused on magnetic skyrmions – topologically robust chiral magnetization textures, capable of storing information and routing spin currents via the topological Hall effect. In this article, we propose an optical system emulating any 2D spin transport phenomena with unprecedented controllability, by employing three-wave mixing in 3D nonlinear photonic crystals. Precise photonic crystal engineering, as well as active all-optical control, enable the realization of effective magnetization textures beyond the limits of thermodynamic stability in current materials. As a proof-of-concept, we theoretically design skyrmionic nonlinear photonic crystals with arbitrary topologies and propose an optical system exhibiting the topological Hall effect. Our work paves the way towards quantum spintronics simulations and novel optoelectronic applications inspired by spintronics, for both classical and quantum optical information processing.

Plasmon-driven creation of magnetic topological structures

Abstract:In the present research, we demonstrate the usage of plasmonic effects in thin film structures to control magnetic topological textures, specifically skyrmions and skyrmioniums. We investigate numerically the generation and alteration of these topological structures caused by hemisphere gold nanoparticle placed over a magnetic layer coated with a dielectric material. The electromagnetic and photothermal models are used to clarify the processes of producing heat and absorption, and the results were implemented in micromagnetic formalism to reveal the dynamics of magnetization under various conditions. Our findings demonstrate the significance of the laser pulse duration and the contact area between nanoparticles and the underlying magnetic layer in forming topological textures. In particular, we show how to generate a single skyrmion, multiple skyrmions, and skyrmioniums, and how to dynamically transition between these states. These results highlight the possibility of manipulating magnetic textures by using plasmonic effects, which presents significant opportunities for spintronics and non-conventional computer applications.

Abstract:GaV_{4}S_{8} is a multiferroic semiconductor hosting magnetic cycloid (Cyc) and Néel-type skyrmion lattice (SkL) phases with a broad region of thermal and magnetic stability. Here, we use time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy to show the coherent generation of collective spin excitations in the Cyc and SkL phases. Our micromagnetic simulations reveal that these are driven by an optically induced modulation of uniaxial anisotropy. Our results shed light on spin dynamics in anisotropic materials hosting skyrmions and pave a new pathway for the optical manipulation of their magnetic order.

Abstract:We report a transient plasmonic spin skyrmion topological quasiparticle within surface plasmon polariton vortices, which is described by analytical modeling and imaging of its formation by ultrafast interferometric time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy. Our model finds a twisted skyrmion spin texture on the vacuum side of a metal/vacuum interface and its integral opposite counterpart in the metal side. The skyrmion pair forming a hedgehog texture is associated with co-gyrating anti-parallel electric and magnetic fields, which form intense pseudoscalar E·B focus that breaks the local time-reversal symmetry and can drive magnetoelectric responses of interest to the axion physics. Through nonlinear two-photon photoemission, we record attosecond precision images of the plasmonic vectorial vortex field evolution with nanometer spatial and femtosecond temporal (nanofemto) resolution, from which we derive the twisted plasmonic spin skyrmion topological textures, their boundary, and topological charges; the modeling and experimental measurements establish a quantized integer photonic topological charge that is stable over the optical generation pulse envelope.

Abstract:The study of van der Waals heterostructures with an interlayer twist, known as "twistronics", has been instrumental in advancing contemporary condensed matter research. Most importantly, it has underpinned the emergence of a multitude of strongly-correlated phases, many of which derive from the topology of the physical system. Here, we explore the application of the twistronics paradigm in plasmonic systems with nontrivial topology, by creating a moiré skyrmion superlattice using two superimposed plasmonic skyrmion lattices, twisted at a "magic" angle. The complex electric field distribution of the moiré skyrmion superlattice is measured using time-resolved vector microscopy, revealing that each super-cell possesses very large topological invariants and harbors a "skyrmion bag", the size of which is controllable by the twist angle and center of rotation. Our work shows how twistronics leads to a diversity of topological features in optical fields, providing a new route to locally manipulate electromagnetic field distributions, which is crucial for future structured light-matter interaction.

Abstract:Electromagnetic (EM) skyrmions are an EM analogue of the skyrmions in condensed matter physics, which offer new degrees of freedom to structure light and manipulate light matter interactions and thus promise various groundbreaking applications in optics and photonics. Recently, there is a growing interest in composing EM skyrmions based on different field vectors of EM waves. Here, we realize an EM skyrmion, i.e., a spoof plasmonic skyrmion, using the electric field vectors of spoof localized surface plasmons (spoof LSPs) in a planar microwave resonator with rotational and mirroring symmetries. We construct the spoof plasmonic skyrmion, which holds a hedgehog-like configuration in its electric field vectors, by synthesizing a scalar vortex with a topological charge 0 in the out-of-plane component of the fields, and a polarization vortex with a topological charge 1 in the in-plane component of the fields. Besides an experimental demonstration of this skyrmion, we employ group representation theory and pinpoint the symmetry origin of the skyrmion. Such an investigation demonstrates the ubiquity of the existence of the skyrmion in any planar EM resonator holding rotational and mirroring symmetries, regardless the dimensions and the operating frequencies. The designed skyrmion not only promises novel microwave applications for sensing, processing, storing and transferring information, but also lays down a general guideline for devising skyrmions operating over a broad range in the EM spectra owing to the fact that the conducted symmetry investigation is independent of specific dimension or frequency.

The skyrmion state is read out by analyzing the microwave spin excitations in time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. Extracting the magnetic field and laser-fluence dependence, we find well-separated magnetic field regimes and different laser-fluence thresholds for the laser-induced creation and annihilation of skyrmions. Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers in non-volatile memory and logic devices. While room-temperature magnetic skyrmions and their current-induced motion were recently demonstrated, the stray field resulting from their finite magnetisation and their topological charge limit their minimum size and reliable motion. Antiferromagnetic skyrmions allow to lift these limitations owing to their vanishing magnetisation and net zero topological charge, promising ultra-small and ultra-fast skyrmions. Here, we report on the observation of isolated skyrmions in compensated synthetic antiferromagnets at zero field and room temperature using X-ray magnetic microscopy. Micromagnetic simulations and an analytical model confirm the chiral antiferromagnetic nature of these skyrmions and allow the identification of the physical mechanisms controlling their size and stability. Finally, we demonstrate the nucleation of synthetic antiferromagnetic skyrmions via local current injection and ultra-fast laser excitation.
