Abstract:This work mainly concerns the—here introduced—category of -sets and functional morphisms, where is a commutative semicartesian quantale. We prove it enjoys all limits and colimits, that it has a classifier for regular subobjects (a sort of truth-values object), which we characterize and give explicitly. Moreover: we prove it to be -locally presentable, (where ); we also describe a hierarchy of monoidal structures in this category.

Abstract:1 Quantiiers as Modal Operators 1.1 Motivations The semantics for quantiiers described in this paper can be viewed both as a new semantics for generalized quantiiers and as a new look at standard rst-order quantiication, bringing the latter closer to modal logic. The standard semantics for generalized quantiiers interprets a monadic generalized quantiier Q as a set of subsets of a domain. For example, the quantiier "there are precisely two" is interpreted by the set of all subsets of the domain which contain precisely two elements. A formula Qx' is true in a model if the set of elements satisfying ' belongs to the interpretation of the quantiier; in our example, if there are precisely two elements satisfying '. The existential quantiier can be treated as a generalized quantiier, too: it is interpreted as the set of all non-empty subsets of the domain. The universal quantiier is interpreted by the singleton set containing the whole domain. The quantiiers listed so far are rst-order deenable in the following sense: they can be deened using ordinary quantiiers and equality. Many interesting generalized quanti-ers are not rst-order deenable. The present study is motivated by the work of Michiel van Lambalgen (1991) on Gentzen-style proof theory for the quantiiers "for many" (its dual is interpreted as a non-principal lter), "for uncountably many" and "for almost all" (the latter contains all subsets of the domain which have Lebesgue measure 1). All those quantiiers are not rst-order deenable. They have Hilbert-style axiomatizations, but until lately no one believed that they can have a reasonable Gentzen-style proof theory. In order to devise such a proof theory, van Lambalgen used a translation of generalized quan-tiier formulas into a rst-order language enriched with a predicate R of indeenite arity. Observe that this translation is reminiscent of the standard translation of modal formulas into rst-order logic, with the sequence of free variables playing the role of the "actual world" and the quantiier ranging over the variables "accessible" from the given sequence. The idea behind such a translation is as follows. When generalized quantiiers are viewed as rst-order operators (binding rst-order variables), it becomes clear that a variable bound by a generalized quan-tiier cannot in general take any possible value. Abstract:We explore a kind of first-order predicate logic with intended semantics in the reals. Compared to other approaches in the literature, we work predominantly in the multiplicative reals $[0,\infty]$, showing they support three generations of connectives, that we call non-linear, linear additive, and linear multiplicative. Means and harmonic means emerge as natural candidates for bounded existential and universal quantifiers, and in fact we see they behave as expected in relation to the other logical connectives. We explain this fact through the well-known fact that min/max and arithmetic mean/harmonic mean sit at opposite ends of a spectrum, that of p-means. We give syntax and semantics for this quantitative predicate logic, and as example applications, we show how softmax is the quantitative semantics of argmax, and Rényi entropy/Hill numbers are additive/multiplicative semantics of the same formula. Indeed, the additive reals also fit into the story by exploiting the Napierian duality $-\log \dashv 1/\exp$, which highlights a formal distinction between 'additive' and 'multiplicative' quantities. Finally, we describe two attempts at a categorical semantics via enriched hyperdoctrines. We discuss why hyperdoctrines are in fact probably inadequate for this kind of logic.

Abstract:In 1957, the Polish logician Andrej Mostowski pointed out that there are many mathematically interesting quantifiers that are not definable in terms of the first-order ∀, ∃ and initiated study of so-called generalized quantifiers (cf. Mostowski, 1957). Since then logicians have discovered and studied a large number of generalized quantifiers. At last count there were well over 200 research papers in this area. Most of this work has been directed toward cardinality quantifiers (e.g. Keisler, 1969) and topological quantifiers (e.g. Sgro, 1977) which are not particularly relevant to natural language, but even so, it has forced logicians to rethink the traditional theory of quantification.

The main categorical properties are established and a special class of operators, called Q-module transforms, is defined. Such operators - that turn out to be precisely the homomorphisms between free objects in those categories - find concrete applications in two different branches of image processing, namely fuzzy image compression and mathematical morphology.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate, by means of a computational model, how individuals map quantifiers onto numbers and how they order quantifiers on a mental line. We selected five English quantifiers ( few , fewer than half , many , more than half , and most ) which differ in truth conditions and vagueness. We collected binary truth value judgment data in an online quantifier verification experiment. Using a Bayesian three-parameter logistic regression model, we separated three sources of individual differences: truth condition, vagueness, and response error. Clustering on one of the model's parameter that corresponds to truth conditions revealed four subgroups of participants with different quantifier-to-number mappings and different ranges of the mental line of quantifiers. Our findings suggest multiple sources of individual differences in semantic representations of quantifiers and support a conceptual distinction between different types of imprecision in quantifier meanings. We discuss the consequence of our findings for the main theoretical approaches to quantifiers: the bivalent truth-conditional approach and the fuzzy logic approach. We argue that the former approach neither can explain inter-individual differences nor intra-individual differences in truth conditions of vague quantifiers. The latter approach requires further specification to fully account for individual differences demonstrated in this study.

Abstract:In this thesis we present a semantic representation formalism based on directed graphs and explore its linguistic adequacy and explanatory benefits in the semantics of plurality and quantification. Our graph language covers the essentials of natural language semantics using only monadic second-order variables. We define its model-theoretical interpretation in terms of graph traversal, where the relative scope of variables arises from their order of valuation. We present a unification-based mechanism for constructing semantic graphs at a simple syntax-semantics interface, where syntax as a partition function on discourse referents is implemented with categorial grammars by establishing a partly deterministic relation between semantics and syntactic distribution. This mechanism is automated to facilitate future exploration. The present graph formalism is applied to linguistic issues in distributive predication, cross-categorial conjunction, and scope permutation of quantificational expressions, including the exceptional scoping behaviors of indefinites.

Abstract:We introduce a corpus of short texts in Mandarin, in which quantified expressions figure prominently. We illustrate the significance of the corpus by examining the hypothesis (known as Huang's "coolness" hypothesis) that speakers of East Asian Languages tend to speak more briefly but less informatively than, for example, speakers of West-European languages. The corpus results from an elicitation experiment in which participants were asked to describe abstract visual scenes. We compare the resulting corpus, called MQTUNA, with an English corpus that was collected using the same experimental paradigm. The comparison reveals that some, though not all, aspects of quantifier use support the above-mentioned hypothesis. Implications of these findings for the generation of quantified noun phrases are discussed.

Abstract:The present paper wants to develop a formal semantics about a special class of formulas: quantifying statements, which are a kind of predicative statements where both subject- and predicate terms are quantifier expressions like 'everything', 'something', and 'nothing'. After showing how talking about nothingness makes sense despite philosophical objections, I contend that there are two sorts of meaning in phrases including 'thing', viz. as an individual (e.g. 'some thing') or as a property (e.g. 'something'). Then I display two kinds of logical forms for quantifying statements, depending on how these 'thing's are ordered into a whole predication. Finally, an algebraic semantics is proposed for the finite set of quantifying statements to order these into a (fragmentary) dodecagon of logical relations. The corresponding Sub-Model Semantics (hereafter: ) aims to update the usual theory of opposition whilst leading to a research program for other kinds of statement like categorical and even modal propositions.

Abstract:Quantification is the research field that studies methods for counting the number of data points that belong to each class in an unlabeled sample. Traditionally, researchers in this field assume the availability of labelled observations for all classes to induce a quantification model. However, we often face situations where the number of classes is large or even unknown, or we have reliable data for a single class. When inducing a multi-class quantifier is infeasible, we are often concerned with estimates for a specific class of interest. In this context, we have proposed a novel setting known as One-class Quantification (OCQ). In contrast, Positive and Unlabeled Learning (PUL), another branch of Machine Learning, has offered solutions to OCQ, despite quantification not being the focal point of PUL. This article closes the gap between PUL and OCQ and brings both areas together under a unified view. We compare our method, Passive Aggressive Threshold (PAT), against PUL methods and show that PAT generally is the fastest and most accurate algorithm. PAT induces quantification models that can be reused to quantify different samples of data. We additionally introduce Exhaustive TIcE (ExTIcE), an improved version of the PUL algorithm Tree Induction for c Estimation (TIcE). We show that ExTIcE quantifies more accurately than PAT and the other assessed algorithms in scenarios where several negative observations are identical to the positive ones.

Probing the Quantitative-Qualitative Divide in Probabilistic Reasoning

Abstract:This paper explores the space of (propositional) probabilistic logical languages, ranging from a purely `qualitative' comparative language to a highly `quantitative' language involving arbitrary polynomials over probability terms. While talk of qualitative vs. quantitative may be suggestive, we identify a robust and meaningful boundary in the space by distinguishing systems that encode (at most) additive reasoning from those that encode additive and multiplicative reasoning. The latter includes not only languages with explicit multiplication but also languages expressing notions of dependence and conditionality. We show that the distinction tracks a divide in computational complexity: additive systems remain complete for $\mathsf{NP}$, while multiplicative systems are robustly complete for $\exists\mathbb{R}$. We also address axiomatic questions, offering several new completeness results as well as a proof of non-finite-axiomatizability for comparative probability. Repercussions of our results for conceptual and empirical questions are addressed, and open problems are discussed.

Abstract:Dou has been seen as a typical example of universal quantification and the point of departure in the formal study of quantification in Chinese. The constraints on dou’s quantificational structure, dou’s diverse uses, and the compatibility between dou and other quantificational expressions have further promoted the refinement of the theory of quantification and sparked debate over the semantic nature of dou. The universal quantificational approach holds that dou is a universal quantifier and explains its diverse uses as the effects produced by quantification on different sorts of entities and different ways of quantificational mapping. However, non-quantificational approaches, integrating the insights of degree semantics and focus semantics, take the scalar use as dou’s core semantics. The quantificational approach to dou can account for its meaning of exclusiveness and the interpretational differences engendered by dou when it associates with a wh-indeterminate to its left or to its right, whereas non-quantificational approaches cannot determine the interpretational differences caused by rightward and leftward association and cannot explain the exclusive use of dou. Despite the differences, the various approaches to dou, quantificational or non-quantificational, have far-reaching theoretical significance for understanding the mechanism of quantification in natural language.
On the fluid-fluid phase separation in charged-stabilized colloidal suspensions

Abstract:We develop a thermodynamic description of particles held at a fixed surface potential. This system is of particular interest in view of the continuing controversy over the possibility of a fluid-fluid phase separation in aqueous colloidal suspensions with monovalent counterions. The condition of fixed surface potential allows in a natural way to account for the colloidal charge renormalization. In a first approach, we assess the importance of the so called ``volume terms'', and find that in the absence of salt, charge renormalization is sufficient to stabilize suspension against a fluid-fluid phase separation. Presence of salt, on the other hand, is found to lead to an instability. A very strong dependence on the approximations used, however, puts the reality of this phase transition in a serious doubt. To further understand the nature of the instability we next study a Jellium-like approximation, which does not lead to a phase separation and produces a relatively accurate analytical equation of state for a deionized suspensions of highly charged colloidal spheres. A critical analysis of various theories of strongly asymmetric electrolytes is presented to asses their reliability as compared to the Monte Carlo simulations.
