Abstract:A fascinating challenge in the field of human–robot interaction is the possibility to endow robots with emotional intelligence in order to make the interaction more intuitive, genuine, and natural. To achieve this, a critical point is the capability of the robot to infer and interpret human emotions. Emotion recognition has been widely explored in the broader fields of human–machine interaction and affective computing. Here, we report recent advances in emotion recognition, with particular regard to the human–robot interaction context. Our aim is to review the state of the art of currently adopted emotional models, interaction modalities, and classification strategies and offer our point of view on future developments and critical issues. We focus on facial expressions, body poses and kinematics, voice, brain activity, and peripheral physiological responses, also providing a list of available datasets containing data from these modalities.
Multimodal communication in animals, humans and robots: an introduction to perspectives in brain-inspired informatics

Abstract:Recent years have seen convergence in research on brain mechanisms and neurocomputational approaches, culminating in the creation of a new generation of robots whose artificial "brains" respect neuroscience principles and whose "cognitive" systems venture into higher cognitive domains such as planning and action sequencing, complex object and concept processing, and language. The present article gives an overview of selected projects in this general multidisciplinary field. The work reviewed centres on research funded by the EU in the context of the New and Emergent Science and Technology, NEST, funding scheme highlighting the topic "What it means to be human". Examples of such projects include learning by imitation (Edici project), examining the origin of human rule-based reasoning (Far), studying the neural origins of language (Neurocom), exploring the evolutionary origins of the human mind (Pkb140404), researching into verbal and non-verbal communication (Refcom), using and interpreting signs (Sedsu), characterising human language by structural complexity (Chlasc), and representing abstract concepts (Abstract). Each of the communication-centred research projects revealed individual insights; however, there had been little overall analysis of results and hypotheses. In the Specific Support Action Nestcom, we proposed to analyse some NEST projects focusing on the central question "What it means to communicate" and to review, understand and integrate the results of previous communication-related research, in order to develop and communicate multimodal experimental hypotheses for investigation by future projects. The present special issue includes a range of papers on the interplay between neuroinformatics, brain science and robotics in the general area of higher cognitive functions and multimodal communication. These papers extend talks given at the NESTCOM workshops, at ICANN (http://www.his.sunderland.ac.uk/nestcom/workshop/icann.html) in Porto and at the first meeting of the Federation of the European Societies of Neuropsychology in Edinburgh in 2008 (http://www.his.sunderland.ac.uk/nestcom/workshop/esn.html). We hope that the collection will give a vivid insight into current trends in the field.
Decoding face recognition abilities in the human brain

Abstract:Why are some individuals better at recognizing faces? Uncovering the neural mechanisms supporting face recognition ability has proven elusive. To tackle this challenge, we used a multimodal data-driven approach combining neuroimaging, computational modeling, and behavioral tests. We recorded the high-density electroencephalographic brain activity of individuals with extraordinary face recognition abilities-super-recognizers-and typical recognizers in response to diverse visual stimuli. Using multivariate pattern analyses, we decoded face recognition abilities from 1 s of brain activity with up to 80% accuracy. To better understand the mechanisms subtending this decoding, we compared representations in the brains of our participants with those in artificial neural network models of vision and semantics, as well as with those involved in human judgments of shape and meaning similarity. Compared to typical recognizers, we found stronger associations between early brain representations of super-recognizers and midlevel representations of vision models as well as shape similarity judgments. Moreover, we found stronger associations between late brain representations of super-recognizers and representations of the artificial semantic model as well as meaning similarity judgments. Overall, these results indicate that important individual variations in brain processing, including neural computations extending beyond purely visual processes, support differences in face recognition abilities. They provide the first empirical evidence for an association between semantic computations and face recognition abilities. We believe that such multimodal data-driven approaches will likely play a critical role in further revealing the complex nature of idiosyncratic face recognition in the human brain.

Abstract:The motivations for organizing this special section were to better address the challenges of face recognition in real-world scenarios, to promote systematic research and evaluation of promising methods and systems, to provide a snapshot of where we are in this domain, and to stimulate discussion about future directions. We solicited original contributions of research on all aspects of real-world face recognition, including: the design of robust face similarity features and metrics; robust face clustering and sorting algorithms; novel user interaction models and face recognition algorithms for face tagging; novel applications of web face recognition; novel computational paradigms for face recognition; challenges in large scale face recognition tasks, e.g., on the Internet; face recognition with contextual information; face recognition benchmarks and evaluation methodology for moderately controlled or uncontrolled environments; and video face recognition. We received 42 original submissions, four of which were rejected without review; the other 38 papers entered the normal review process. Each paper was reviewed by three reviewers who are experts in their respective topics. More than 100 expert reviewers have been involved in the review process. The papers were equally distributed among the guest editors. A final decision for each paper was made by at least two guest editors assigned to it. To avoid conflict of interest, no guest editor submitted any papers to this special section.

Abstract:A Review of Face Recognition Technology: In the previous few decades, face recognition has become a popular field in computer-based application development This is due to the fact that it is employed in so many different sectors. Face identification via database photographs, real data, captured images, and sensor images is also a difficult task due to the huge variety of faces. The fields of image processing, pattern recognition, and computer vision are all crucial to face recognition. Almost 20 papers from 2011 to 2021 were analyzed and it was observed that a framework called Deep Learning includes a number of significant algorithms. To get better results, you need to employ distinct network models for different applications (images, speech, and text). A review of major person recognition research is also included which is followed by a detailed description of the most accurate and latest datasets (like CKPlus, DeepFace, ImageNet, etc.) required in face recognition. Further, the properties of appropriate face authentication applications and architectures are discussed. This paper also includes the research challenges that might occur and some potential future works as well. We present a prospective analysis of facial recognition also in this manuscript.

Faces and voices in the brain: A modality-general person-identity representation in superior temporal sulcus

Abstract:Face-selective and voice-selective brain regions have been shown to represent face-identity and voice-identity, respectively. Here we investigated whether there are modality-general person-identity representations in the brain that can be driven by either a face or a voice, and that invariantly represent naturalistically varying face videos and voice recordings of the same identity. Models of face and voice integration suggest that such representations could exist in multimodal brain regions, and in unimodal regions via direct coupling between face- and voice-selective regions. Therefore, in this study we used fMRI to measure brain activity patterns elicited by the faces and voices of familiar people in face-selective, voice-selective, and person-selective multimodal brain regions. We used representational similarity analysis to (1) compare representational geometries (i.e. representational dissimilarity matrices) of face- and voice-elicited identities, and to (2) investigate the degree to which pattern discriminants for pairs of identities generalise from one modality to the other. We did not find any evidence of similar representational geometries across modalities in any of our regions of interest. However, our results showed that pattern discriminants that were trained to discriminate pairs of identities from their faces could also discriminate the respective voices (and vice-versa) in the right posterior superior temporal sulcus (rpSTS). Our findings suggest that the rpSTS is a person-selective multimodal region that shows a modality-general person-identity representation and integrates face and voice identity information.

In particular, dialogue robots and multimodal dialogue systems, which must consider multimodal information and the surrounding environment, require further technological advancements. Towards such advancements, dialogue robot competitions and dialogue system live competitions have been conducted in recent years. Unlike previous dialogue systems that rely solely on verbal language, systems that express through facial expressions and gestures, grounded in the real world, hold the potential to significantly transform society in the future. This special issue is devoted to the progress of such dialogue robots and multimodal dialogue systems.

Abstract:Humans and primates rely on visual face recognition for social interactions. Damage to specific brain areas causes prosopagnosia, a condition characterized by the inability to recognize familiar faces, indicating the presence of specialized brain areas for facial‐recognition processing. A breakthrough finding came from a non‐human primate (NHP) study conducted in the early 2000s; it was the first to identify multiple face‐processing areas in the temporal lobe, termed "face patches." Subsequent studies have demonstrated the unique role of each face patch in the structural analysis of faces. More recent studies have expanded these findings by exploring the role of face‐patch networks in social and memory functions and the importance of early face exposure in the development of the system. In this review, we discuss the neuronal mechanisms responsible for analyzing facial features, categorizing faces, and associating faces with memory and social contexts within both the cerebral cortex and subcortical areas. Use of NHPs in neuropsychological and neurophysiological studies can highlight the mechanistic aspects of the neuronal circuit underlying face recognition at both the single‐neuron and whole‐brain network levels.

Abstract:Faces hold significant importance as visual stimuli in human daily experiences. Although there is substantial research on emotional processing and social evaluations of faces, most studies have focused on each of these topics separately. In this review, we advocate for the adoption of multimodal cognitive neuroscience methods to investigate these phenomena. We illustrate this approach for two specific research areas: ambiguity in facial expressions of emotion and social trait judgment of faces. Faces are among the most important visual stimuli that humans perceive in everyday life. While extensive literature has examined emotional processing and social evaluations of faces, most studies have examined either topic using unimodal approaches. In this review, we promote the use of multimodal cognitive neuroscience approaches to study these processes, using two lines of research as examples: ambiguity in facial expressions of emotion and social trait judgment of faces. In the first set of studies, we identified an event‐related potential that signals emotion ambiguity using electroencephalography and we found convergent neural responses to emotion ambiguity using functional neuroimaging and single‐neuron recordings. In the second set of studies, we discuss how different neuroimaging and personality‐dimensional approaches together provide new insights into social trait judgments of faces. In both sets of studies, we provide an in‐depth comparison between neurotypicals and people with autism spectrum disorder. We offer a computational account for the behavioral and neural markers of the different facial processing between the two groups. Finally, we suggest new practices for studying the emotional processing and social evaluations of faces. All data discussed in the case studies of this review are publicly available.

Abstract:There is widespread interest in the relationship between the neurobiological systems supporting human cognition and emerging computational systems capable of emulating these capacities. Human speech comprehension, poorly understood as a neurobiological process, is an important case in point. Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems with near-human levels of performance are now available, which provide a computationally explicit solution for the recognition of words in continuous speech. This research aims to bridge the gap between speech recognition processes in humans and machines, using novel multivariate techniques to compare incremental ‘machine states’, generated as the ASR analysis progresses over time, to the incremental ‘brain states’, measured using combined electro- and magneto-encephalography (EMEG), generated as the same inputs are heard by human listeners. This direct comparison of dynamic human and machine internal states, as they respond to the same incrementally delivered sensory input, revealed a significant correspondence between neural response patterns in human superior temporal cortex and the structural properties of ASR-derived phonetic models. Spatially coherent patches in human temporal cortex responded selectively to individual phonetic features defined on the basis of machine-extracted regularities in the speech to lexicon mapping process. These results demonstrate the feasibility of relating human and ASR solutions to the problem of speech recognition, and suggest the potential for further studies relating complex neural computations in human speech comprehension to the rapidly evolving ASR systems that address the same problem domain.
Hemispheric Asymmetries in Face Recognition and Naming: Effects of Prior Stimulus Exposure

Abstract:Detailed models of the cognitive operations subserving performance in a number of processing domains such as reading, spelling and object recognition have become increasingly prevalent in both cognitive psychology and neuropsychology. Such models attempt to distinguish between functionally separable components of processing, and to describe their organisation and operation. The study of face recognition has recently been the subject of the development of such models, and in the last three or four years at least four models have been offered (Bruce, 1983; Ellis, 1983; Hay & Young, 1982; Rhodes, 1985). These models are similar in that they distinguish between the following processing components (or stages) in face recognition: 1) visual-spatial processing; 2) a face representational system which permits recognition of known or familiar faces; 3) semantic information; and 4) naming. The precise details of the model differ, however, in many respects and in particular in the characterisation of how the system which permits the recognition of a face as a known or familiar face (without necessarily fully accessing semantic and name information) is assumed to operate. Ellis’ (1983) model posits a “familiarity check”, whereas Bruce’s (1983) model would suggest that the “structural code” would be accessed, and in Hay & Young’s model known faces may be classified as such when they gain access to “face recognition units” which may be seen as being face analogs of input logogens in Morton’s (1979) model of visual word recognition. Finally, Rhodes’ (1985) model would appear to involve the accessing of her posited processing stage labelled “view-independent topographical representation”.

Abstract:Abstract One of the most fascinating aspects of human beings is their personality. Two models that are currently being researched and widely used in computational approaches are the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator and the Big Five (or OCEAN). In this study, we will briefly examine the history of these two models and the current state of their applications in the Digital Humanities field. Although categorizing research in Digital Humanities is a challenging task, we have chosen to include works that, while primarily psychological in nature, use methodologies and methods from Digital Humanities, specifically in literary texts. Consequently, we can divide this research into two categories. On the one hand, there are works that aim to study and identify the personalities of fictional characters in literature or movies. On the other hand, there are works that aim to recreate personalities in virtual characters based on a predetermined model. We will therefore examine the works proposed by the scientific community for both approaches.

Voice Identity Recognition: Functional Division of the Right STS and Its Behavioral Relevance

Abstract:Abstract The human voice is the primary carrier of speech but also a fingerprint for person identity. Previous neuroimaging studies have revealed that speech and identity recognition is accomplished by partially different neural pathways, despite the perceptual unity of the vocal sound. Importantly, the right STS has been implicated in voice processing, with different contributions of its posterior and anterior parts. However, the time point at which vocal and speech processing diverge is currently unknown. Also, the exact role of the right STS during voice processing is so far unclear because its behavioral relevance has not yet been established. Here, we used the high temporal resolution of magnetoencephalography and a speech task control to pinpoint transient behavioral correlates: we found, at 200 msec after stimulus onset, that activity in right anterior STS predicted behavioral voice recognition performance. At the same time point, the posterior right STS showed increased activity during voice identity recognition in contrast to speech recognition whereas the left mid STS showed the reverse pattern. In contrast to the highly speech-sensitive left STS, the current results highlight the right STS as a key area for voice identity recognition and show that its anatomical-functional division emerges around 200 msec after stimulus onset. We suggest that this time point marks the speech-independent processing of vocal sounds in the posterior STS and their successful mapping to vocal identities in the anterior STS.

Abstract:The human voice is described in dialogic linguistics as an embodiment of self in a social context, contributing to expression, perception and mutual exchange of self, consciousness, inner life, and personhood. While these approaches are subjective and arise from phenomenological perspectives, scientific facts about personal vocal identity, and its role in biological development, support these views. It is our purpose to review studies of the biology of personal vocal identity-the familiar voice pattern-as providing an empirical foundation for the view that the human voice is an embodiment of self in the social context. Recent developments in the biology and evolution of communication are concordant with these notions, revealing that familiar voice recognition (also known as vocal identity recognition or individual vocal recognition) has contributed to survival in the earliest vocalizing species. Contemporary ethology documents the crucial role of familiar voices across animal species in signaling and perceiving internal states and personal identities. Neuropsychological studies of voice reveal multimodal cerebral associations arising across brain structures involved in memory, emotion, attention, and arousal in vocal perception and production, such that the voice represents the whole person. Although its roots are in evolutionary biology, human competence for processing layered social and personal meanings in the voice, as well as personal identity in a large repertory of familiar voice patterns, has achieved an immense sophistication.

Abstract:Two decades of social neuroscience and neuroeconomics research illustrate the brain mechanisms that are engaged when people consider human beings, often in comparison to considering artificial intelligence (AI) as a nonhuman control. AI as an experimental control preserves agency and facilitates social interactions but lacks a human presence, providing insight into brain mechanisms that are engaged by human presence and the presence of AI. Here, I review this literature to determine how the brain instantiates human and AI presence across social perception and decision-making paradigms commonly used to realize a social context. People behave toward humans differently than they do toward AI. Moreover, brain regions more engaged by humans compared to AI extend beyond the social cognition brain network to all parts of the brain, and the brain sometimes is engaged more by AI than by humans. Finally, I discuss gaps in the literature, limitations in current neuroscience approaches, and how an understanding of the brain correlates of human and AI presence can inform social science in the wild.
