Abstract:BackgroundTremendous progress has been made in the field of cartilage repair and regeneration, particularly with tissue-engineering approaches. This study aims to estimate the global status and current trends in the field of cartilage tissue engineering.MethodsPublications from 2011 to 2020 on tissue engineering for cartilage repair and regeneration were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection database. The source data were statistically evaluated based on the bibliometrics. In terms of visualized analysis, some bibliometric indicators such as bibliographic coupling, co-citation, co-authorship and co-occurrence analysis were performed by VOSviewer software, to investigate the research trends in tissue engineering for cartilage repair and regeneration.ResultsIn total, 3715 papers were included. Since 2011, the amount of issued papers and relative research interest (RRI) have grown by leaps and bounds globally. The United States was the biggest contributor to the research in this field, due to the greatest citation frequency, the highest H index and the strongest total link strength. Romania had the highest average citation for each. The journal Tissue Engineering Part A published most articles in this field. For institutions, the largest contributors were Shanghai Jiaotong University, University of California System and Sichuan University. Studies could all be grouped into four main clusters: study of biomaterial scaffolds, study of seeding cells and growth factors, experimental animal model and clinical study, and mechanism research.ConclusionGreat efforts should be put into the study of biomaterial scaffolds, seeding cells and growth factors, considered to be the next hot topics in cartilage tissue engineering. This findings provide collaborative insights and research orientation for academic researchers, surgeons and healthcare practitioners to a certain extent.

Abstract:Background Since the discovery of rehabilitation as an intervention for rotator cuff injury, its impact on the recovery of rotator cuff injury has attracted crucial attention, and the number of related studies is increasing worldwide. There were no bibliometric and visualized analysis studies in this field. This study aimed to investigate the research hotpots and trends in the rehabilitation of rotator cuff injury via bibliometric and visualized analysis and to identify the future development of clinical practice. Method The publications regarding rehabilitation of rotator cuff injury from inception to December 2021 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database. The trends of publications, co-authorship and co-occurrence analysis and visualized analysis were carried out using Citespace, VOSviewer, Scimago Graphica software, and R Project. Results A total of 795 publications were included in this study. The number of publications significantly increased yearly. The United States published the highest number of related papers and the papers published by the United States had the highest citations. The University of Laval, the University of Montreal and Keele University were the top 3 most contributive institutions. Additionally, the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery was the journal with the highest number of publications. The most common keywords were “rotator cuff”, “rehabilitation”, “physical therapy”, “management”, and “telerehabilitation”. Conclusion The total number of publications has shown a steady upward trend. The cooperation between countries globally was still relatively lacking, and therefore it is necessary to strengthen cooperation between different countries and regions to provide conditions for multi-center, large sample, and high-quality research. In addition to the relatively mature rehabilitation of rotator cuff injury such as passive motion or exercise therapy, telerehabilitation has also attracted much attention with the progress of science.

Progress in tissue-engineering for tendon-to-bone healing after rotator cuff repair

Abstract:Rotator cuff injury, considered as a resource of pain, disability and dyssomnia to serious decline in the quality of life, is a common disorder of the shoulder joint. Basic principles of rotator cuff repair aim at achieving high initial ifxation strength, maintaining mechanical stability and restoring the anatomic healing of the cuff tendon. After the routine surgical procedure for rotator cuff repair, the biology and histology of the normal enthesis are not restored. Tendon-to-bone healing occurs with a ifbrovascular scar tissue interface that is mechanically inferior to the native insertion site, which may lead to high re-rupture rate. For these reasons, new approaches are required to improve structural healing. Tissue engineering strategies have been suggested to improve the biological environment around the bone-tendon interface and to promote regeneration of the native insertion site. Although experimental applications of growth factors and scaffolds on animal models demonstrate promising results, techniques which can be used in human rotator cuff repair are still very limited. Tissue engineering to improve tendon-to-bone healing has bright future and requires more research before its clinical applications. This review will outline therapies of growth factors, scaffolds and stem cells in tendon healing and rotator cuff repair.

Abstract:Rotator cuff tears are one of the most common shoulder problems that usually require operative treatments. Therapeutic options used to repair ruptured tendons have consisted of suture, autografts, allografts, and synthetic prostheses. Although surgical treatments have improved dramatically up to now, shoulder pathology is still challenging to orthopedic surgery primarily because these injuries often respond poorly to treatment and require prolonged rehabilitation. Recent attention has focused on several biologic pathways which can augment function to tendon healing, consequently leading to the identification of growth factors involved in this process. In this review, we discuss the studies published in these few years about these growth factors and their role in rotator cuff healing.

Abstract:<p>Our body systems are comprised of numerous multi-tissue units. For the musculoskeletal system, one of the predominant functional units is comprised of bone, tendon/ligament, and muscle tissues working in tandem to facilitate locomotion. To successfully treat musculoskeletal injuries and diseases, critical consideration and thoughtful integration of clinical, biological, and engineering aspects are necessary to achieve translational bench-to-bedside research. In particular, identifying ideal biomaterial design specifications, understanding prior and recent tissue engineering advances, and judicious application of biomaterial and fabrication technologies will be crucial for addressing current clinical challenges in engineering multi-tissue units. Using rotator cuff tears as an example, insights relevant for engineering a bone-tendon-muscle multi-tissue unit are presented. This review highlights the tissue engineering strategies for musculoskeletal repair and regeneration with implications for other bone-tendon-muscle units, their derivatives, and analogous non-musculoskeletal tissue structures.</p>

Abstract:Objective In this research, we investigated the current status, hotspots, frontiers, and trends of research in the field of bone-tendon interface (BTI) from 2000 to 2023, based on bibliometrics and visualization and analysis in CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and a bibliometric package in R software. Methods We collected and organized the papers in the Web of Science core collection (WoSCC) for the past 23 years (2000–2023), and extracted and analyzed the papers related to BTI. The extracted papers were bibliometrically analyzed using CiteSpace for overall publication trends, authors, countries/regions, journals, keywords, research hotspots, and frontiers. Results A total of 1,995 papers met the inclusion criteria. The number of papers published and the number of citations in the field of BTI have continued to grow steadily over the past 23 years. In terms of research contribution, the United States leads in terms of the number and quality of publications, number of citations, and collaborations with other countries, while the United Kingdom and the Netherlands lead in terms of the average number of citations. The University of Leeds publishes the largest number of papers, and among the institutions hosting the 100 most cited papers Hospital for Special Surgery takes the top spot. MCGONAGLE D has published the highest number of papers (73) in the last 10 years. The top three clusters include #0 “psoriatic arthritis”, #1 “rotator cuff repair”, and #2 “tissue engineering”. The structure and function of the BTI and its key mechanisms in the healing process are the key to research, while new therapies such as mechanical stimulation, platelet-rich plasma, mesenchymal stem cells, and biological scaffolds are hot topics and trends in research. Conclusion Over the past 23 years, global research on the BTI has expanded in both breadth and depth. The focus of research has shifted from studies concentrating on the structure of the BTI and the disease itself to new therapies such as biomaterial-based alternative treatments, mechanical stimulation, platelet-rich plasma, etc.

Abstract:Objective: Cartilage defects represent an area of intense research interest worldwide among basic scientists and clinicians. This study evaluates the current global status of research into cartilage defects and predicts future trends through bibliometric and visualized analyses.Method: Publications from 1980 to 2018 on research into cartilage defects were obtained from the Science Citation Index-Expanded Web of Science. Bibliometric methods were used to analyze and index the source data. For visualization studies, VOSviewer software was used conduct bibliographic coupling, co-authoring, co-citation, and co-occurrence analyses.Result: A total of 9,194 publications were included in this study. The total number of publications in the field is generally on the rise, but in recent years the rate of increase in publications and relative research interest have declined. The USA made the greatest contribution to research on cartilage defects, with the highest number of citations and H-index. The American Journal of Sports Medicine published the highest number of articles, and Harvard University had the highest institutional contribution to the field. The most prominent research directions relating to cartilage defects are clinical studies, tissue engineering studies, chondrocyte-based studies, and stem cell-related studies.Conclusion: The number of publications per year on cartilage defects will likely stabilize in the next 10 years based on current global trends. Future research in the field will likely focus on clinical studies and new directions based on regenerative medicine.

Abstract:Purpose: This study was aimed to examine the global research status and current research hotspots in the field of tendon stem cells. Methods: Bibliometric methods were employed to retrieve relevant data from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database. Additionally, Citespace, Vosviewer, SCImago, and Graphad Prism were utilized to analyze the publication status in this field, identify the current research hotspots, and present a mini-review. Results: The most active countries in this field were China and the United States. Notable authors contributing significantly to this research included Lui Pauline Po Yee, Tang Kanglai, Zhang Jianying, Yin Zi, and Chen Xiao, predominantly affiliated with institutions such as the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, Third Military Medical University, University of Pittsburgh, and Zhejiang University. The most commonly published journals in this field were Stem Cells International, Journal of Orthopedic Research, and Stem Cell Research and Therapy. Moreover, the current research hotspots primarily revolved around scaffolds, molecular mechanisms, and inflammation regulation. Conclusion: Tendon stem cells hold significant potential as seed cells for tendon tissue engineering and offer promising avenues for further research Scaffolds, molecular mechanisms and inflammation regulation are currently research hotspots in this field.

Abstract:The development of tracheal tissue engineering (TTE) has seen a rapid growth in recent years. The purpose of this study was to investigate the global status, trends, and hotspots of TTE research based on bibliometrics and visualization analysis. Publications related to TTE were retrieved and included in the Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used to generate knowledge maps. Six hundred fifty-five publications were identified, and the quantity of the annual publications worldwide was on the increase. International collaboration is a widespread reality. The United States led the world in the field of trachea tissue engineering, whereas University College London was the institution with the greatest contribution. In addition, Biomaterials had a great influence in this field, attracting the largest number of papers. Moreover, the topics of TTE research largely concentrated on the biomechanical scaffold preparation, the vascularization and epithelialization of scaffold, the tracheal cartilage regeneration, and the tissue-engineered tracheal transplantation. And the research on the application of decellularization and 3D printing for the construction of a tissue-engineered trachea was likely to receive more widespread attention in the future. Impact statement In recent years, tracheal tissue engineering (TTE) has experienced rapid growth. In this study, we investigated the worldwide status and trends of TTE research, and revealed the countries, institutions, journals, and authors that had made significant contributions to the field of TTE. Moreover, the possible research hotspots in the future were predicted. According to our research, researchers can gain a better understanding of the trends in this field, and stay informed of the most current research by tracking key journals, institutions, and authors.

Abstract:The self-repair ability of cartilage defects is limited, and 3D printing technology provides hope for the repair and regeneration of cartilage defects. Although 3D printing technology and cartilage repair and regeneration have been studied for decades, there are still few articles specifically describing the relationship between 3D printing and cartilage defect repair and regeneration, and a bibliometric analysis has not been completed. To supplement, sort out and summarize the content in related fields, we analyzed the research status of 3D printing technology and cartilage repair and regeneration from 2002 to 2022. According to the set search strategy, the Web of Science Core Collection was used as the data source, and the literature search was completed on December 6, 2022. CiteSpace V and VOSviewer were used as bibliometric tools to complete the analysis of the research focus and direction of the published literature. Based on the analysis results, we focus on the occurrence and development of this field of combined medical and engineering research. Moreover, the current advantages and limitations of this field as well as future development prospects are discussed in depth. It will help to shape researchers' understanding of 3D printing and cartilage repair and regeneration, inspire researchers' research ideas, guide research directions, and promote related research results to clinical application.

Abstract:Tissue engineering aims to produce a functional tissue replacement to repair defects. Tissue reconstruction is an essential step toward the clinical application of engineered tissues. Significant progress has recently been achieved in this field. In our laboratory, we focus on construction of cartilage, tendon and bone. The purpose of this review was to summarize the advances in the engineering of these three tissues, particularly focusing on tissue regeneration and defect repair in our laboratory. In cartilage engineering, articular cartilage was reconstructed and defects were repaired in animal models. More sophisticated tissues, such as cartilage in the ear and trachea, were reconstructed both in vitro and in vivo with specific shapes and sizes. Engineered tendon was generated in vitro and in vivo in many animal models with tenocytes or dermal fibroblasts in combination with appropriate mechanical loading. Cranial and limb bone defects were also successfully regenerated and repaired in large animals. Based on sophisticated animal studies, several clinical trials of engineered bone have been launched with promising preliminary results, displaying the high potential for clinical application.

Abstract:To learn about advances in skeletal muscle tissue engineering (SMTE) in recent years, we used VOSviewer and Citespace software to quantitatively analyze and visualize relevant literature in the Web of Science (WoS) database during the period 2012–2022. By mapping high-frequency keyword relationship networks, keyword time zones, and journal article co-citations, we clarified the areas of great interest, evolutionary paths, and developmental trends in research on SMTE. We conducted an in-depth analysis of highly cited and representative articles at various stages to summarize the mainstream research areas of great interest in SMTE and discussed the future development and challenges in this field, intending to provide a reference for the clinical treatment of skeletal muscle injury repair. We found that a collaborative network of authors has formed in this field; the journals publishing SMTE articles belong to the fields of biomaterials and tissue engineering, and open-access journals have played a key role in the promotion of the development of SMTE,and in the past decade, there has been rapid progress in SMTE research in terms of both depth and breadth.

Abstract:Background: Meniscus injuries, a common joint disease caused by long-term wear, trauma and inflammation, usually cause chronic dysfunction and pain in the joint. Current clinical surgeries mainly aim to remove the diseased tissue to alleviate patient suffering instead of helping with meniscus regeneration. As an emerging treatment, stem cell therapy has been verified to facilitate meniscus regeneration effectively. The purpose of this study is to investigate the publication conditions of stem cell therapy for meniscal regeneration and to visualize the research trends and frontiers. Methods: Relevant publications relevant to stem cells for meniscal regeneration was retrieved SCI-Expanded of the Web of Science database from 2012 to 2022. Research trends in the field were analysed and visualized by CiteSpace and VOSviewer. Results: A total of 354 publications were collected and analysed. The United States contributed the largest number of publications (118, 34.104%). Tokyo Medical Dental University has contributed the largest number of publications (34) among all full-time institutions. Stem cell research therapy has published the largest number of researches on stem cells for meniscal regeneration (17). SEKIYA. I contributed the majority of publications in this field (31), while Horie, M was the most frequently cited authors (166). #1 tissue engineering, #2 articular cartilage, #3 anterior cruciate ligament, #4 regenerative medicine, #5 scaffold are the chief keywords. This indicates that the current research hotspot has been transformed from basic surgical research to tissue engineering. Conclusion: Stem cell therapy is a promising therapeutic method for meniscus regeneration. This is the first visualized and bibliometric study to thoroughly construct the development trends and knowledge structure in the research field of stem cell therapy for meniscal regeneration in the past 10 years. The results thoroughly summarize and visualize the research frontiers, which will shed light on the research direction of stem cell therapy for meniscal regeneration.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to analyze and visualize global research trends and hotspots in rheumatoid arthritis joint replacement over the past two decades using CiteSpace and VOSviewer software.The findings from this bibliometric analysis will inform and guide future research directions in this field. Methods: We searched for relevant literature on rheumatoid arthritis joint replacement from January 2005 to August 2024 in the Web of Science database.Using CiteSpace, VOSviewer,and Bibliometrix software,we analysed keywords, authors,institutions, countries,and journals,and constructed a network cooperation map. Results: A total of 2888 articles written by 11,723 authors from 70 countries and 3194 institutions were analysed and published in 530 journals.The United States, with 855 publications accounting for 29.61%of the world's total,and the United Kingdom, with 332 publications representing 11.50 %,made the greatest contributions.Additionally,the United States maintains strong collaborative relationships with many countries. According to the analysis of the outbreak keyword map, the joint replacement of rheumatoid arthritis has become mature, and the complications, prognosis and functional rehabilitation of joint replacement are the main focus of research in this field. Conclusion: we conducted a comprehensive summary of the literature on rheumatoid arthritis joint replacement published between 2005 and 2024 using bibliometrics and visual analysis.This enabled us to identify the development trends and research hotspots in this field over the past two decades, offering valuable insights for researchers planning future studies in this area.

Abstract:Background: Cardiovascular tissue engineering (CTE) is a promising technique to treat incurable cardiovascular diseases, such as myocardial infarction and ischemic cardiomyopathy. Plenty of studies related to CTE have been published in the last 30 years. However, an analysis of the research status, trends, and potential directions in this field is still lacking. The present study applies a bibliometric analysis to reveal CTE research trends and potential directions. Methods: On 5 August 2022, research articles and review papers on CTE were searched from the Web of Science Core Collection with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Publication trends, research directions, and visual maps in this field were obtained using Excel (Microsoft 2009), VOSviewer, and Citespace software. Results: A total of 2,273 documents from 1992 to 2022 were included in the final analysis. Publications on CTE showed an upward trend from 1992 [number of publications (Np):1] to 2021 (Np:165). The United States (Np: 916, number of citations: 152,377, H-index: 124) contributed the most publications and citations in this field. Research on CTE has a wide distribution of disciplines, led by engineering (Np: 788, number of citations: 40,563, H-index: 105). "Functional maturation" [red cluster, average published year (APY): 2018.63, 30 times], "cell-derived cardiomyocytes" (red cluster, APY: 2018.43, 46 times), "composite scaffolds" (green cluster, APY: 2018.54, 41 times), and "maturation" (red cluster, APY: 2018.17, 84 times) are the main emerging keywords in this area. Conclusion: Research on CTE is a hot research topic. The United States is a dominant player in CTE research. Interdisciplinary collaboration has played a critical role in the progress of CTE. Studies on functional maturation and the development of novel biologically relevant materials and related applications will be the potential research directions in this field.

Abstract:Transplantation of tissue-engineered trachea is an effective treatment for long-segment tracheal injury. This technology avoids problems associated with a lack of donor resources and immune rejection, generating an artificial trachea with good biocompatibility. To our knowledge, a systematic summary of basic and clinical research on tissue-engineered trachea in the last 20 years has not been conducted. Here, we analyzed the development trends of tissue-engineered trachea research by bibliometric means and outlined the future perspectives in this field. The Web of Science portal was selected as the data source. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and the Bibliometric Online Analysis Platform were used to analyze the number of publications, journals, countries, institutions, authors, and keywords from 475 screened studies. Between 2000 and 2023, the number of published studies on tissue-engineered trachea has been increasing. Biomaterials published the largest number of papers. The United States and China have made the largest contributions to this field. University College London published the highest number of studies, and the most productive researcher was an Italian scholar, Paolo Macchiarini. However, close collaborations between various researchers and institutions from different countries were generally lacking. Despite this, keyword analysis showed that manufacturing methods for tracheal stents, hydrogel materials, and 3D bioprinting technology are current popular research topics. Our bibliometric study will help scientists in this field gain an in-depth understanding of the current research progress and development trends to guide their future work, and researchers in related fields will benefit from the introduction to transplantation methods of tissue-engineered trachea.

Global research trends on platelet-rich plasma for tendon and ligament injuries from the past two decades: A bibliometric and visualized study

Abstract:Background: In sports medicine, tendon and ligament injuries are the most prevalent conditions, and with the booming of sports competition, the incidence of sports injuries is gradually increasing, investigating more potent therapeutic options is therefore becoming increasingly crucial. Platelet-rich plasma therapy has gained popularity as an effective and secure treatment in recent years. Currently, a faceted systematic and clear visual analysis is lacking in this research area. Methods: The literature related to using platelet-rich plasma to treat ligament and tendon injuries from 2003 to 2022 in the core dataset of the Web of Science database was collected and analyzed visually using Citespace 6.1 software. Research hotspots and development trends were analyzed in terms of high-impact countries or regions, authors, research institutions, keywords, and cited literature. Results: The literature comprised a total of 1,827 articles. The annual publication volume of relevant literature has demonstrated a significant development tendency as the field of platelet-rich plasma research for tendon and ligament injuries has heated up in recent years. With 678 papers, the United States came in top place, followed by China with 187 papers. Hosp Special Surg ranked first with 56 papers. The hot research topics analyzed by keywords were tennis elbow, anterior cruciate ligament, rotator cuff repair, achilles tendon, mesenchymal stem cells, guided tissue regeneration, network meta analysis, chronic patellar tendinopathy, and follow up. Conclusion: Analysis of the research literature over the past 20 years shows that the United States and China will continue to dominate in terms of volume of publications based on annual volume and trends, with some collaboration among high-impact authors and further collaboration still needed in different countries and institutions. Platelet-rich plasma is widely used in the treatment of tendon ligament injuries. Its clinical efficacy is influenced by a number of factors, the main ones being the inconsistency in the preparation and composition of platelet-rich plasma and its related preparations, and the differences in efficacy due to different activation methods of platelet-rich plasma, as well as factors such as injection time, injection site, administration method, number of administrations, acidity and evaluation methods, In addition, the applicability to different injury diseases remains controversial. In recent years, the molecular biology of platelet-rich plasma for tendon ligament therapy has received increasing attention.
A global bibliometric and visualized analysis in the status and trends of corneal tissue engineering research from 1991 to 2021

Abstract:Corneal tissue engineering has developed rapidly in recent years, with a large number of publications emerging worldwide. This study focused on exploring the global status and research trends in this field. Publications related to corneal tissue engineering from 1991 to 2021 were acquired from the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-Expanded) of Web of Science (WoS). Firstly, the VOS viewer software was chosen for visualizing bibliometric networks, including bibliographic coupling analysis, co-citation analysis, co-authorship analysis, and co-occurrence analysis, and the CiteSpace software was used to detect burst keywords. Subsequently, the publication trends in corneal tissue engineering research were also predicted. In present study, 953 publications were selected and analyzed. The number of annual publications was increasing globally and was predicted to continue the current trend. While Japan ranked top 1 in terms of average citation, the USA contributed the most to the corneal tissue engineering research with highest number of citations and highest H-index. The journal of Biomaterials contributed the largest publication number. The top-ranked institutions were National University of Singapore and Singapore National Eye Center. Additionally, researches could be manually divided into four clusters: “biomaterial related research,” “cell related research,” “transplantation therapy,” and “mechanism research on biomaterials.” Specifically, the research topic “hydrogel” was predicted to be hotspots which may help researchers to explore new directions for future research.

A Systematic Review of Tissue Engineering Scaffold in Tendon Bone Healing in Vivo

Abstract:Background: Tendon-bone healing is an important factor in determining the success of ligament reconstruction. With the development of biomaterials science, the tissue engineering scaffold plays an extremely important role in tendon-bone healing and bone tissue engineering. Materials and Methods: Electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, and the Web of Science) were systematically searched for relevant and qualitative studies published from 1 January 1990 to 31 December 2019. Only original articles that met eligibility criteria and evaluated the use of issue engineering scaffold especially biomaterials in tendon bone healing in vivo were selected for analysis. Results: The search strategy identified 506 articles, and 27 studies were included for full review including two human trials and 25 animal studies. Fifteen studies only used biomaterials like PLGA, collage, PCL, PLA, and PET as scaffolds to repair the tendon-bone defect, on this basis, the rest of the 11 studies using biological interventions like cells or cell factors to enhance the healing. The adverse events hardly ever occurred, and the tendon bone healing with tissue engineering scaffold was effective and superior, which could be enhanced by biological interventions. Conclusion: Although a number of tissue engineering scaffolds have been developed and applied in tendon bone healing, the researches are mainly focused on animal models which are with limitations in clinical application. Since the efficacy and safety of tissue engineering scaffold has been proved, and can be enhanced by biological interventions, substantial clinical trials remain to be done, continued progress in overcoming current tissue engineering challenges should allow for successful clinical practice.

Abstract:Objective: Electroactive biomaterials used in tissue engineering have been extensively studied. Electroactive biomaterials have unique potential advantages in cell culture and tissue regeneration, which have attracted the attention of medical researchers worldwide. Therefore, it is important to understand the global scientific output regarding this topic. An analysis of publications on electroactive biomaterials used in tissue engineering over the past decade was performed, and the results were summarised to track the current hotspots and highlight future directions. Methods: Globally relevant publications on electroactive biomaterials used in tissue engineering between 2011 and 2021 were extracted from the Web of Science database. The VOSviewer software and CiteSpace were employed to visualise and predict trends in research on the topic. Results: A total of 3,374 publications were screened. China contributed the largest number of publications (995) and citations (1581.95, actual value ×0.05). The United States achieved the highest H-index (440 actual values ×0.05). The journal Materials Science & Engineering C-materials for Biological Applications (IF = 7.328) published the most studies on this topic (150). The Chinese Academy of Science had the largest number of publications (107) among all institutions. The publication titled Nanotechnological strategies for engineering complex tissues by Dir, T of the United States had the highest citation frequency (985 times). Regarding the function of electroactive materials, the keyword "sensors" emerged in recent years. Regarding the characterisation of electroactive materials, the keyword "water contact angle" appeared lately. Regarding electroactive materials in nerve and cardiac tissue engineering, the keywords "silk fibroin and conductive hydrogel" appeared recently. Regarding the application of electroactive materials in bone tissue engineering, the keyword "angiogenesis" emerged in recent years. The current research trend indicates that although new functional materials are constantly being developed, attention should also be paid to their application and transformation in tissue engineering. Conclusion: The number of publications on electroactive biomaterials used in tissue engineering is expected to increase in the future. Topics like sensors, water contact angle, angiogenesis, silk fibroin, and conductive hydrogels are expected to be the focuses of research in the future; attention should also be paid to the application and transformation of electroactive materials, particularly bone tissue engineering. Moreover, further development of the field requires joint efforts from all disciplines.
