Abstract:Multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels have been appealing candidates for multifunctional ionic skin. However, the fabrication of the multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels with satisfactory mechanical property to meet the practical applications is still a great challenge. In this study, a novel poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-sodium acrylate)/alginate/hectorite clay Laponite XLS (PNIPAM-SA/ALG/XLS) double cross-linked hydrogel with excellent mechanical property, self-recovery ability, temperature/pH-responsive ability, and strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity was fabricated. The PNSAX hydrogel possessed a moderate tensile strength of 290 kPa at a large elongation rate of 1120% and an excellent compression strength of 2.72 MPa at 90%. The hydrogel also possessed excellent mechanical repeatability and self-recovery ability. Thus, the hydrogel could withstand repetitive deformations for long time periods. Additionally, the hydrogel could change its transparency and volume once at a temperature of 44 °C and change its volume at different pHs. Thus, the visual temperature/pH-responsive ability allowed the hydrogel to qualitatively harvest environmental information. Moreover, the hydrogel possessed an excellent conductivity of 0.43 S/m, and the hydrogel could transform large/subtle deformation and temperature information into electrical signal change. Thus, the ultrafast strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity allowed the hydrogel to quantitatively detect large/small-scale human motions as well as environmental temperature. A cytotoxicity test confirmed the good cytocompatibility. Taken together, the hydrogel was suitable for human motion detecting and environmental information harvesting for long time periods. Therefore, the hydrogel has a great application potential as a multifunctional ionic skin and smart sensor.

Abstract:An on‐skin paintable water‐resistant biohydrogel is introduced. By dynamically modulating the hydrogen bond linkage, the ink of the biohydrogel is capable of converting to a film within 2 min and forming a seamless interface. The obtained biohydrogel performs water‐resistant, skin‐like, and ethanol‐triggered removal properties. Besides, multi‐channel and high‐fidelity electrocardiogram detection is achieved by applying the biohydrogel. To achieve accurate monitoring of bioelectrical signals, it is essential to use customizable bioelectrodes that can self‐adapt to the skin's surface topography. Ion‐conducting hydrogel has received significant attention in this field due to its softness, adhesion, and skin‐like mechanical properties. However, these bioelectrodes currently suffer from degradation of adhesion, electrical conductivity, and skin‐compliance when exposed to aqueous environments. This significantly limits the application of bioelectrodes. Herein, a customizable biohydrogel that can be applied on skin or fabric by solvent volatilization for liquid ink‐gel film conversion is reported. The biohydrogel's distinct characteristic of transitioning between a liquid and hydrogel phase establishes superb conformal contact and dynamic compliance with the epidermis. This effectively eliminates motion artifacts and results in lower contact impedance and noise in both static and dynamic states when compared to existing bioelectrodes. The biohydrogel is applied to the cotton fabric to create electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring garments. These garments enable the acquisition of ECG signals with high accuracy in aqueous environment for over 72 h. Besides, the biohydrogel‐based garments outperform the commercial gel electrodes by 83.5% in signal‐to‐noise ratio. Additionally, the cotton/biohydrogel electrode facilitates multi‐channel, high‐fidelity recording of ECG signals, enabling high‐performance capture and classification of ECG waveforms across multiple channels.

Abstract:Hydrogels are widely used in flexible ionotronics due to their continuous conductive phase and good biocompatibility. However, their poor mechanical properties affect their stability and lifespan. It is a significant challenge to prepare hydrogels with both high conductivity and mechanical strength, as improving the mechanical properties often results in a tighter network, which reduces electrical conductivity. Human skin is composed of a stiff collagen fibril scaffold for resisting external damage, and a soft matrix that detect various stimuli through ion transport. Herein, inspired by the structure of human skin, a hydrogel composite with remarkable mechanical properties, high ionic conductivity, and self-healing property is prepared. The composite structure with 3D printed elastomeric skeleton and hydrogel matrix, addresses both the contradiction between the ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of hydrogels, as well as the difficulty of realizing complex macrostructures of the skeleton. The issue of weak interface in composites is resolved by creating interfacial covalent bonds. The composite's self-healing property, combined with a robust interface, ensure the stability and longevity of the composite when used as flexible sensors. This novel approach of creating robust interface is also employed in the encapsulation of hydrogels and the fabrication of flexible microcircuits.

Hofmeister-Effect-Guided Ionohydrogel Design as Printable Bioelectronic Devices

Abstract:Bioelectronic platforms convert biological signals into electrical signals by utilizing biocatalysts that provide tools to monitor the activity of cells and tissues. Traditional conducting materials such as solid conductors and conducting polymers are confronted with a great challenge in sophisticated production processes and mismatch at biological tissues-machine interfaces. Furthermore, the biocatalyst, the key functional component in the electron-transfer reaction for bio-signal detection denatures easily in an ionic conductive solution. Herein, a bionic strategy is elaborately developed to synthesize an ionohydrogel bioelectronic platform that possesses extracellular-matrix-like habitat by employing hydrated ionic liquids (HILs) as ionic solvent and bioprotectant. This strategy realizes an integration of ionic and enzymatic electronic circuits and minimization of the disparities between tissues and artificial machines. The Hofmeister effect of HILs on enzyme proteins and polymer chains ensures the high bioactivity of the enzymes and greatly improves the mechanical properties of the ionohydrogels. Moreover, hydrogen bonds formed by ILs, water, and polymer chains greatly improve the water-retention of the ionohydrogel and give it more practical significance. Consequently, the promising ionohydrogel is partly printed and fabricated into wearable devices as a pain-free humoral components monitor and a wireless motion-sensor.

Abstract:Through advances in macromolecular design and engineering, a fully biodegradable and biocompatible ionotronic skin with high ionic conductivity and good compliance with skin is constructed. The ionotronic skin is capable of accurately detecting both in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology, which will bring a new perspective for green wearable and implantable electronics. Wearable electronics have impacted many aspects of human life including health monitoring, disease diagnosis, and human‐machine interfacing. However, the rapid development also accelerates the generation of electronic waste (e‐waste), which is threatening the health of ecological systems. Accordingly, high‐performance biodegradable materials suitable for transient electronics are highly demanded and challenging. In this work, a fully biodegradable and biocompatible ionotronic skin is designed based on double‐network natural polyelectrolytes derivatives. It consists of carboxylated chitosan (CCS) and sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) polymerized in glycerol and water followed by cross‐linking with hydrogen bonds and electrostatic attraction (namely SBMAX‐CCSY‐Glyz). By macromolecular engineering, the ionotronic skin exhibits high ionic conductivity, good compliance with skin, as well as complete degradability, which is capable of transient measurement of electrophysiology. Applied on the sciatic nerve of bullfrog, it can accurately record action potentials and fully degrade in only 3 days without any residue. Such biodegradable and biocompatible ionotronic skin will shed light on the design of ionotronic materials for future transient electronics.

Abstract:The emergence of hydrogel ionotronics has significantly extended the applications of soft electronics by allowing intimate interfaces between electronic components and biological/engineered surfaces for improved sensing and communication with surrounding stimuli. However, hydrogel ionotronic devices that combine high stretchability, self-healing, good water-retention and biocompatibility are still needed. Here, we report a biocompatible ionic hydrogel prepared from polyvinyl alcohol, silk fibroin, and borax. In this ionic hydrogel, polyvinyl alcohol and borax offer high stretchability and conductivity, respectively, while silk fibroin improves the stability of the hydrogel and increases water uptake by the gels. The hydrogels feature strains larger than 5,000%, good water retention, self-healing and tunable conductivity and adhesive capabilities. We also demonstrate the utility of the hydrogel as a sensing platform to monitor human body motion for applications in health management, soft robotics, and human-machine interfaces.

Abstract:The first‐generation ionic skins demonstrate great advantages in the tunable mechanical properties, high transparency, ionic conductivities, and multiple sensory capacities. However, little attention is paid to the interfacial interactions among the ambient environment, natural organisms, and the artificial skins. In particularly, current ionic skins based on traditional synthetic hydrogels suffer from dehydration in vitro and lack of substance communication channels with biological tissues. Herein, this work develops a bio‐inspired hydrogel to address these key challenges. The hydrogel is designed with natural moisturizing factors to lock water, biomineral ions to transmit signals, and biomimetic gradient channels to transport substances from non‐living to living interfaces. It is stable in ambient condition, adhesive and hydrated on mammal skins, and capable of non‐invasive point‐to‐point theranostics. This theranostic ionic skin realizes sensitive detection, enhanced treatment efficacy, and reduced side effects toward major diseases in vitro. It will shed light on the hydrogel bioelectronics with excellent biocompatibility, bio‐protection, and bio‐integration for human–machine interfaces and intelligent theranostics.

Abstract:Bioinspired hydrogels have promising prospects in applications such as wearable devices, human health monitoring equipment, and soft robots due to their multifunctional sensing properties resembling natural skin. However, the preparation of intelligent hydrogels that provide feedback on multiple electronic signals simultaneously, such as human skin receptors, when stimulated by external contact pressure remains a substantial challenge. In this study, we designed a bioinspired hydrogel with multiple conductive capabilities by incorporating carbon nanotubes into a chelate of calcium ions with polyacrylic acid and sodium alginate. The bioinspired hydrogel consolidates self-healing ability, stretchability, 3D printability, and multiple conductivities. It can be fabricated as an integrated strain sensor with simultaneous piezoresistive and piezocapacitive performances, exhibiting sensitive (gauge factor of 6.29 in resistance mode and 1.25 kPa-1 in capacitance mode) responses to subtle pressure changes in the human body, such as finger flexion, knee flexion, and respiration. Furthermore, the bioinspired strain sensor sensitively and discriminatively recognizes the signatures written on it. Hence, we expect our ideas to provide inspiration for studies exploring the use of advanced hydrogels in multifunctional skin-like smart wearable devices.

A Degradable-Renewable Ionic Skin Based on Edible Glutinous Rice Gel

Abstract:Traditional wearable devices are commonly nonrecyclable and nondegradable, resulting in energy waste and environmental pollution. Here, a household degradable and renewable ionic skin based on edible glutinous rice gel is developed for a strain, temperature and salivary enzyme activity sensor. This gel depends on intermolecular and intramolecular H-bonds among amylopectin and amylose, and this presents excellent skin-like properties, including stretchability, self-healing property, and adhesion to various substrates. The glutinous rice gel-based skin sensor can be used to monitor vital signs and physiological parameters such as body temperature and heart rate. The sensor also achieves specific speech recognition and detects temperature and body micromovements, which provides the potential to reconstruct language or sensory/motor functions. More importantly, because of the excellent biocompatibility and degradability, the sensor can directly detect the activity of human salivary amylase, which is useful for diagnosing pancreas-, kidney-, and spleen-related diseases in the elderly. Finally, the raw material of ionic skin that originates from traditional grains is degradable and renewable as well as it can be used to prepare household wearable devices. Hence, this work not only extends the application of wearable electronics in daily life but also facilitates health monitoring in the elderly and improves their quality of life.

An Intrinsic Self-Healable, Anti-Freezable and Ionically Conductive Hydrogel for Soft Ionotronics Induced by Imidazolyl Cross-Linker Molecules Anchored with Dynamic Disulfide Bonds

Abstract:Hydrogels are ideal materials for flexible electronic devices based on their smooth ion channels and considerable mechanical flexibility. A substantial volume of aqueous solution is required to enable the smooth flow of ions, resulting in the agony of low-temperature freezing; besides, long-term exposure to bending/tensile tress triggers fatigue issues. Therefore, it is a great challenge to prepare hydrogels with both freeze-resistance and long-term durability. Herein, a polyacrylic acid-based hydrogel with both hydrophobic interaction and dynamic reversible covalent bonding cross-linking networks is preparing (DC-hydrogel) by polymerizing a bi-functional imidazole-type ionic liquid monomer with integrated disulfide and alkene bonds (DS/DB-IL) and an octadecyl methacrylate, achieving self-healing. The DS/DB-IL anchored into the polymer backbone has a high affinity with water, reducing the freezing point of water, while the DS/DB-IL with free ions provides superior ionic conductivity to the DC-hydrogel. The polyacrylic acid with abundant carboxyl gives hydrogel good self-adhesiveness to different substrates. Ionotronics with resistance-type sensors with stable output performance are fabricated and explored its application to joint motion and health information. Moreover, hydrogel-based sensing arrays with high resolution and accuracy are fabricated to identify 2D distribution of stress. The hydrogels have great promise for various ionotronics in many fields.

Abstract:Stretchable ionic conductors such as hydrogels and ionic-liquid-based gels (aka ionogels) have garnered great attention as they enable the development of soft ionotronics. Notably, soft ionotronic devices inevitably operate in humid environments or under mechanical loads. However, many previously reported hydrogels and ionogels, however, are unstable in environments with varying humidity levels owing to hydrophilicity, and their liquid components (i.e., ionic liquid, water) may leak easily from polymer matrices under mechanical loads, causing deterioration of device performance. This work presents novel hydrophobic ionogels with strong ionic liquid retention capability. The ionogels are ambiently and mechanically stable, capable of not absorbing moisture in environments with high relative humidity and almost not losing liquid components during long periods of mechanical loading. Moreover, the ionogels exhibit desirable conductivity (10−4–10−5 S cm−1), large rupturing strain (>2000%), moderate fractocohesive length (0.51–1.03 mm), and wide working temperature range (−60 to 200 °C). An ionic skin is further designed by integrating the concept of sensory artificial skins and triboelectric nanogenerators, which can convert multiple stimuli into various types of signals, including resistance, capacitance, short-circuit current, and open-circuit voltage. This work may open new avenues for the development of soft ionotronics with stable performance.

An environment-stable hydrogel with skin-matchable performance for human-machine interface

Abstract:Ionic hydrogel-based sensors have shined a spotlight on wearable electronics. However, the sensitivity and reliability of hydrogel devices are significantly hampered by the weak adhesion of skin-sensor interface as well as inferior temperature tolerance. Here, inspired by the structure and composition of dermis, a novel skin-attachable and environment-stable hydrogel was designed by integrating collagen into the LiCl-containing chemically cross-linked polyacrylamide hydrogel. The hydrogel exhibited skin-like mechanical properties of low modulus, superior stretchability as well as excellent elasticity. Furthermore, the introduction of collagen endowed the hydrogel with robust and seamless interfaces with diverse materials, including the curved skin. As a result, the hydrogel is capable of serving as a human-machine interface for collecting reliable electrocardiography (ECG) signals and discerning various human motions, with high sensitivity (gauge factor = 10.7), fast response, negligible hysteresis as well as extensive monitoring range. Notably, the hydrogel that can mimick the temperature-tolerant mechanism of most organisms possesses persistent stabilization of adhesive, conductive, sensory and mechanical performances at subzero or ambient conditions. The skin-inspired strategy paves an effective way for the design of multifunctional materials with potential applications in next-generation electronics.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels have shown great potential in areas such as wearable devices and electronic skins. Aiming at the sensitivity and biodegradability of the traditional flexible hydrogel electronic skin, this paper developed an ionic skin (S−iSkin) based on edible starch–sodium alginate (starch–SA), which can convert the external strain stimulus into a voltage signal without an external power supply. As an excellent ion conductive polymer, S−iSkin exhibited good stretchability, low hydrophilicity and outstanding electrochemical and sensing properties. Driven by sodium ions, the ion charge transfer resistance of S−iSkin is reduced by 4 times, the capacitance value is increased by 2 times and its conductivity is increased by 7 times. Additionally, S−iSkin has excellent sensitivity and linearity (R2 = 0.998), a long service life and good biocompatibility. Under the action of micro-stress, it can produce a voltage change ratio of 2.6 times, and its sensitivity is 52.04. The service life test showed that it can work stably for 2000 s and work more than 200 stress–voltage response cycles. These findings provide a foundation for the development of health monitoring systems and micro-stress sensing devices based on renewable biomass materials.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels used as flexible wearable sensor devices have attracted considerable attention because of their easy preparation, biocompatibility, and macro/micro mechanosensitive properties. However, developing an integrated conductive hydrogel that combines high mechanical stability, strong adhesion, and excellent mechanosensitive properties to meet practical requirements remains a great challenge owing to the incompatibility of properties. Herein, we prepare a multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel by introducing high-modulus bacterial cellulose (BC) to form the skeleton of double networks, which exhibit great mechanical properties in both tensile (83.4 kPa, 1235.9% strain) and compressive (207.2 kPa, 79.9% strain) stress-strain tests. Besides, the fabricated hydrogels containing high-concentration Ca2+ show excellent anti-freezing (high ionic conductivities of 1.92 and 0.36 S/m at room temperature and -35 degrees C, respectively) properties. Furthermore, the sensing mechanism based on the conductive units and applied voltage are investigated to the benefit of the practical applications of prepared hydrogels. Therefore, the designed and fabricated hydrogels provide a novel strategy and can serve as candidates in the fields of sensors, ionic skins, and soft robots.

Abstract:The ever-growing overlap between stretchable electronic devices and wearable healthcare applications is igniting the discovery of novel biocompatible and skin-like materials for human-friendly stretchable electronics fabrication. Amongst all potential candidates, hydrogels with excellent biocompatibility and mechanical features close to human tissues are constituting a promising troop for realizing healthcare-oriented electronic functionalities. In this work, based on biocompatible and stretchable hydrogels, a simple paradigm to prototype stretchable electronics with an embedded three-dimensional (3D) helical conductive layout is proposed. Thanks to the 3D helical structure, the hydrogel electronics present satisfactory mechanical and electrical robustness under stretch. In addition, reusability of stretchable electronics is realized with the proposed scenario benefiting from the swelling property of hydrogel. Although losing water would induce structure shrinkage of the hydrogel network and further undermine the function of hydrogel in various applications, the worn-out hydrogel electronics can be reused by simply casting it in water. Through such a rehydration procedure, the dehydrated hydrogel can absorb water from the surrounding and then the hydrogel electronics can achieve resilience in mechanical stretchability and electronic functionality. Also, the ability to reflect pressure and strain changes has revealed the hydrogel electronics to be promising for advanced wearable sensing applications.

Abstract:Facing the challenges posed by exponentially increasing e-waste,the development of recyclable and tran-sient electronics has paved the way to an environmentally-friendly progression strategy,where electron-ics can disintegrate and/or degrade into eco-friendly end products in a controlled way.Natural polymers possess cost and energy efficiency,easy modification,and fast degradation,all of which are ideal prop-erties for transient electronics.Gelatin is especially attractive due to its unique thermoreversible gelation processes,yet its huge potential as a multifunctional electronic material has not been well-researched due to its limited mechanical strength and low conductivity.Herein,we explored versatile applications of gelatin-based hydrogels through the assistance of multifunctional additives like carbon nanotubes to enhance their electromechanical performances.The optimized gelatin hydrogel displays not only a high conductivity of 0.93 S/m,electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of 39.6 dB,and tensile stress tolerance of 263 kPa,but also shows a negative permittivity phenomenon,which may find versatile applications in novel electronics.As a proof of concept,hydrogels were assembled as wearable sensors to sensitively de-tect static and dynamic pressures and strains generated by solids,liquids,and airflow,as well as diverse body movements.Furthermore,the recyclability,biocompatibility,and degradability of gelatin-based hy-drogels were well studied and analyzed.This work outlines a facile method to design multifunctional transient materials for wearable,sustainable,and eco-friendly electronics.

Abstract:Benefiting from the good electromechanical performance, ionic conductive hydrogel can easily convert the deformation into electrical signals, showing great potential in wearable electronic devices. However, due to the high water content, icing and water evaporation problems seriously limit their development. Although additives can ease these disadvantages, the accompanying performance degradation and complex preparation processes couldn't meet application needs. In this work, a convenient method was provided to prepare ionic conductive hydrogels with sensitive electromechanical performance, harsh environmental tolerance, and long-term stability without additives. Based on the hydratability between metal ions and water molecules resulting in spatial condensation of the hydrogel framework, the hydrogel exhibits good flexibility and ionic conductivity (70.3 mS/cm). Furthermore, the metal salt can bind with water molecules to reduce the vapor pressure, thus endowing the hydrogel with good freezing resistance (-40 °C) and long-term stability over a wide temperature range (-20 °C-50 °C). Based on these unique advantages, the hydrogel shows good sensitivity. Even in a harsh environment, it still maintained excellent stability (-20 °C-50 °C, GF = 2.2, R2 > 0.99). Assembled with a Wi-Fi device, the hydrogel sensor demonstrates good health activity and physiological state detection performance, demonstrating great potential for wearable medical devices.
