Abstract:Morphing structures are a relatively new aircraft technology currently being investigated for a variety of applications, from civil to military. Despite the lack of literature maturity and its complexity, morphing wings offer significant aerodynamic benefits over a wide range of flight conditions, enabling reduced aircraft fuel consumption and airframe noise, longer range and higher efficiency. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of morphing horizontal tail design on aircraft performance and flight mechanics. This study is conducted on a 1:5 scale model of a Preceptor N-3 Pup at its trim condition, of which the longitudinal dynamics is implemented in MATLAB. Starting from the original horizontal tail airfoil NACA 0012 with the elevator deflected at the trim value, this is modified by using the X-Foil tool to obtain a smooth morphing airfoil trailing edge shape with the same CLα. By comparing both configurations and their influence on the whole aircraft, the resulting improvements are evaluated in terms of stability in the short-period mode, reduction in the parasitic drag coefficient CD0, and increased endurance at various altitudes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the issue of evaluating the impact of a deformable horizontal tail design on the performance and flight mechanics of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Specifically, the study focuses on replacing traditional elevators with deformation technology to improve aircraft stability, reduce the parasitic drag coefficient \(C_{D0}\), and enhance endurance at different altitudes. The research employs a 1:5 scale model of the Preceptor N-3 Pup and implements its longitudinal dynamic model in the MATLAB environment. By comparing the performance of the original configuration with that of the aircraft equipped with a deformable horizontal tail, the improvements brought by the deformation technology are assessed. The main objectives of the paper include: 1. **Stability Analysis**: Assessing the impact of the deformable horizontal tail on the short-period mode stability. 2. **Performance Enhancement**: Improving the aircraft's endurance by reducing the parasitic drag coefficient \(C_{D0}\) and increasing the \(C_{L}^{3/2}/C_D\) ratio. 3. **Efficiency Improvement**: Verifying whether the deformation technology can enhance the aerodynamic efficiency of the aircraft. Through these analyses, the study aims to provide theoretical basis and technical support for the design and optimization of future UAVs.
