Abstract:We have exploited a new and distinctive combination method that “disperses” elemental Pd into CuS nanoplates. Pd was successfully dispersed by means of the concomitant transformation of CuS into an amorphous sulfide, which formed an intimate metal–sulfide contact via cation exchange and underwent a subsequent reduction. A series of such Pd-dispersed CuS hetero-nanoplates were synthesized with tailored proportions and compositions. By efficient utilization of noble metal atoms and stable anchored active sites, the optimal catalytic performance for the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene, a probe reaction, was achieved with high selectivity, activity, and stability. We believe that the synthetic strategy described in our study is a feasible means of developing effective metal–sulfide catalysts for organic reactions.

Abstract:Improving the catalytic selectivity of Pd catalysts is of key importance for various industrial processes and remains a challenge so far. Given the unique properties of single-atom catalysts, isolating contiguous Pd atoms into a single-Pd site with another metal to form intermetallic structures is an effective way to endow Pd with high catalytic selectivity and to stabilize the single site with the intermetallic structures. Based on density functional theory modeling, we demonstrate that the (110) surface of Pm3̅m PdIn with single-atom Pd sites shows high selectivity for semihydrogenation of acetylene, whereas the (111) surface of P4/mmm Pd3In with Pd trimer sites shows low selectivity. This idea has been further validated by experimental results that intermetallic PdIn nanocrystals mainly exposing the (110) surface exhibit much higher selectivity for acetylene hydrogenation than Pd3In nanocrystals mainly exposing the (111) surface (92% vs 21% ethylene selectivity at 90 °C). This work provides insight for rational design of bimetallic metal catalysts with specific catalytic properties.

Abstract:The direct pyrolysis of metal-zeolite imidazolate frameworks (M-ZIFs) has been widely recognized as the predominant approach for synthesizing atomically dispersed metal-nitrogen-carbon single-atom catalysts (M/NC-SACs), which have exhibited exceptional activity and selectivity in the semihydrogenation of acetylene. However, due to weak adsorption of reactants on the single site and restricted molecular diffusion, the semihydrogenation of large organic molecules (e.g., phenylacetylene) was greatly limited for M/NC-SACs. In this work, a dual single-atom catalyst (h-Pd-Mn/NC) with hollow mesopores was designed and prepared using a general host-guest strategy. Taking the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene as an example, this catalyst exhibited ultrahigh activity and selectivity, which achieved a turnover frequency of 218 mol(C=C)mol(Pd) (-1) min(-1), 16-fold higher than that of the commercial Lindlar catalyst. The catalyst maintained high activity and selectivity even after 5 cycles of usage. The superior activity of h-Pd-Mn/NC was attributed to the 4.0 nm mesopore interface of the catalyst, which enhanced the diffusion of macromolecular reactants and products. Particularly, the introduction of atomically dispersed Mn with weak electronegativity in h-Pd-Mn/NC could drive the electron transfer from Mn to adjacent Pd sites and regulate the electronic structure of Pd sites. Meanwhile, the strong electronic coupling in Pd-Mn pairs enhanced the d-electron domination near the Fermi level and promoted the adsorption of phenylacetylene and H-2 on Pd active sites, thereby reducing the energy barrier for the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene to styrene, instead of ethylbenzene, holds significant importance in the polymer industry. However, existing heterogeneous catalysts face the challenge of achieving exceptional activity while maintaining high selectivity. Herein, we introduce a novel intermetallic PdCu3 catalyst supported on defective nanodiamond-graphene (ND@G), showcasing not only high selectivity (95%) but also remarkable activity (turnover frequency: 2940 h(-1), 6 times higher than that of the commercial Lindlar catalyst). Experimental results and DFT calculations reveal that the exceptional selectivity of the catalyst originates from the unique intermetallic structure of PdCu3 with abundant isolated Pd sites on its surface, which favors the rapid desorption of styrene. Simultaneously, the high activity is attributed to the electron transfer from ND@G to PdCu3, facilitating the reduction in the energy barrier of the rate-determining step for styrene formation.

Abstract:Intermetallic alloying of one active metal to another inert metal provides not only the improved dispersion of active centers but also a unique and homogeneous ensemble of active sites, thus offering new opportunities in a variety of reactions. Herein, we report that PdZn intermetallic nanostructure with Pd-Zn-Pd ensembles are both highly active and selective for the semihydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene, which is usually inaccessible due to the sequential hydrogenation to ethane. Microcalorimetric measurements and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the appropriate spatial arrangement of Pd sites in the Pd-Zn-Pd ensembles of the PdZn alloy leads to the moderate sigma-bonding mode for acetylene with two neighboring Pd sites while the weak pi-bonding pattern of ethylene adsorption on the single Pd site, which facilitates the chemisorption toward acetylene and promotes the desorption of ethylene from the catalyst surface. As a result, it leads to the kinetic favor of the selective conversion of acetylene to ethylene.

Abstract:Selective semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene to styrene is a crucial step in the polystyrene industry. Although Pd-based catalysts are widely used in this reaction due to their excellent hydrogenation activity, the selectivity for styrene remains a great challenge. Herein, we designed a mesoporous silica stabilized Pd-Ru@ZIF-8 (MS Pd-Ru@ZIF-8) nanoreactor with novel Pd and Ru single site synergistic catalytical system for semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene. The nanoreactor exhibited a superior performance, achieving 98% conversion of phenylacetylene and 96% selectivity to styrene. Turnover frequency (TOF) of nanoreactor was up to as high as 2,188 h−1, which was 25 times and 5 times more than the single metal species catalysts, mesoporous silica stabilized Pd@ZIF-8 nanoreactor (MS Pd@ZIF-8), and mesoporous silica stabilized Ru@ZIF-8 nanoreactor (MS Ru@ZIF-8). This catalytic activity was attributed to the synergistic effect of Pd and Ru single site anchored strongly into the framework of ZIF-8, which reduced the desorption energy of styrene and increased the hydrogenation energy barrier of styrene. Importantly, since the ordered mesoporous silica was introduced into the nanoreactor shell to stabilize ZIF-8, MS Pd-Ru@ZIF-8 showed excellent reusability and stability. After the five cycles, the catalytical activity and selectivity still remained. This work provides insights for a synergistic catalytic system based on single-site active sites for selective hydrogenation reactions.

Superior Reactivity of Heterogeneous Single-Cluster Catalysts for Semi-Hydrogenation of Acetylene

Abstract:Acetylene semi-hydrogenation is a vital process where the utilization of supported isolated Pd atoms as catalytic active sites is promising due to their unique reactivity and metal atom efficacy. In particular, doping Pd single atoms at different sites on metal-oxide surfaces provides an opportunity to regulate their local coordination environments and modulate their electronic and catalytic properties. In this study, we conduct extensive density functional theory calculations to investigate the influence of single Pd atom coordination environments and surface properties on the activity and selectivity of Pd1/TiO2 catalysts for acetylene semi-hydrogenation. Considering the activity and selectivity, a four-atom single-cluster catalyst (SCC) of Pd1Ti3/TiO2 with negatively charged Pdδ− sites is found to exhibit excellent catalytic performance. Moreover, both activity and selectivity are highly correlated with the surface properties, including the d-band center index and surface work function. Our work provides theoretical guidance for the future design of heterogeneous SCC on reducible oxide supports for similar reactions in heterogeneous catalysis.
Pd−Zn Alloy Nanoparticles Encapsulated into Mesoporous Silica with Confinement Effect for Highly Selective Semi‐Hydrogenation of Phenylacetylene

Abstract:In the process of hydrogenation of phenylacetylene to styrene, it is a crucial step to improve the reaction selectivity of the target product styrene. Herein, we have designed the Pd‐Zn alloy nanoparticles encapsulated into mesoporous silica with confinement effect (Pd‐Zn@MS) for highly selective semi‐hydrogenation of phenylacetylene via annealing the Pd NPs@ZIF‐8 in reducing atmosphere. The as‐obtained Pd‐Zn@MS achieved up to the 95% of conversion rate and 92% of selectivity, because the mesoporous silica exhibits a steric hindrance effect for the reactant molecular size, and the Pd‐Zn alloy nanoparticles shows the high selectivity for the target product styrene. DFT calculations demonstrates that the PdZn alloy nanoparticles can reduce significantly the desorption energy barrier of styrene from 1.72 eV to 0.95 eV, compared with the Pd nanoparticles. Meanwhile the mesoporous silica in the outer layer greatly guarantees the stability of the catalytic performance of the catalyst, and the catalytic performance did not drop after the five‐cycle test. This work provides a new idea for the selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene and the process of limited‐area catalysis.

Abstract:Atomically precise nanoclusters are promising model catalysts to understand the relationship between structure and catalytic activity. However, designing efficient active sites remains challenging because the highly covered ligands obscure the metal sites. Herein, we reported a Pd-6(S-Adm)(6)(PPh3)(PPh) nanocluster, which shows high selectivity in the semihydrogenation of aromatic alkyne. The Pd-6 nanocluster has a unique chair structure, where the pan is composed of the coplanar Pd atoms, the back is composed of two S-Adm ligands, and the legs are composed of four S-Adm, one PPh3, and one PPh ligands. Experiments reveal that the high selectivity of intact Pd-6 nanocluster is attributed to the synergistic effect of thiols and phosphines, modulating the electron properties and benefiting the proper hydrogen dissociation ability and desorption of product. Interestingly, it was found that the exposed coplanar Pd atoms could provide specific active sites for the adsorption of C equivalent to C and benzene ring. DFT calculations show that phenylacetylene and styrene adsorb on the coplanar Pd-6 much weaker than on the Pd(111) surface, allowing the styrene to be desorbed before further hydrogenation. The phenyl adsorption constrains that the hydrogenation can occur only on the coplanar Pd-6, which is more facile for phenylacetylene than for styrene, and results in semihydrogenation.
Lattice Strain and Mott-Schottky Effect of the Charge-Asymmetry Pd1Fe Single-Atom Alloy Catalyst for Semi-Hydrogenation of Alkynes with High Efficiency

Abstract:The ideal interface design between the metal and substrate is crucial in determining the overall performance of the alkyne semihydrogenation reaction. Single-atom alloys (SAAs) with isolated dispersed active centers are ideal media for the study of reaction effects. Herein, a charge-asymmetry "armor" SAA (named Pd1Fe SAA@PC), which consists of a Pd1Fe alloy core and a semiconducting P-doped C (PC) shell, is rationally designed as an ideal catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of alkynes with high efficiency. Multiple spectroscopic analyses and density functional theory calculations have demonstrated that Pd1Fe SAA@PC is dual-regulated by lattice tensile and Schottky effects, which govern the selectivity and activity of hydrogenation, respectively. (1) The PC shell layer applied an external traction force causing a 1.2% tensile strain inside the Pd1Fe alloy to increase the reaction selectivity. (2) P doping into the C-shell layer realized a transition from a p-type semiconductor to an n-type semiconductor, thereby forming a unique Schottky junction for advancing alkyne semihydrogenation activity. The dual regulation of lattice strain and the Schottky effect ensures the excellent performance of Pd1Fe SAA@PC in the semihydrogenation reaction of phenylethylene, achieving a conversion rate of 99.9% and a selectivity of 98.9% at 4 min. These well-defined interface modulation strategies offer a practical approach for the rational design and performance optimization of semihydrogenation catalysts.
Encapsulation of Pd Single-Atom Sites in Zeolite for Highly Efficient Semihydrogenation of Alkynes

Abstract:Palladium (Pd)-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) have shown outstanding selectivity for semihydrogenation of alkynes, but most Pd single sites coordinated with highly electronegative atoms (such as N, O, and S) of supports will result in a decrease in the electron density of Pd sites, thereby weakening the adsorption of reactants and reducing catalytic performance. Constructing a rich outer-shell electron environment of Pd single-atom sites by changing the coordination structure offers a novel opportunity to enhance the catalytic efficiency with excellent alkene selectivity. Therefore, in this work, we first propose the in situ preparation of isolated Pd sites encapsulated within Al/Si-rich ZSM-5 structure using the one-pot seed-assisted growth method. Pd1@ZSM-5 features Pd-O-Al/Si bonds, which can boost the domination of d-electron near the Fermi level, thereby promoting the adsorption of substrates on Pd sites and reducing the energy barrier for the semihydrogenation of alkynes. In semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene, Pd1@ZSM-5 catalyst performs the highest turnover frequency (TOF) value of 33582 molC═C/molPd/h with 96% selectivity of styrene among the reported heterogeneous catalysts and nearly 17-fold higher than that of the commercial Lindlar catalyst (1992 molC═C/molPd/h). This remarkable catalytic performance can be retained even after 6 cycles of usage. Particularly, the zeolitic confinement structure of Pd1@ZSM-5 enables precise shape-selective catalysis for alkyne reactants with a size less than 4.3 Å.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is widely applied in the chemical industry; nevertheless, achieving highly selective hydrogenation with high catalytic activity is considerably challenging. Herein, ultrafine PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated by high-surface-area mesoporous α-Al 2 O 3 were prepared by high-temperature calcination–reduction using a porous organic framework (POF) as the template. As-obtained PdCu@α-Al 2 O 3 exhibited a high selectivity of 95% for the semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene as a probe reaction under mild reaction conditions. The separation of continuous Pd atoms and modification of the Pd electronic state by Cu atoms suppressed β-hydride formation and alkene adsorption, contributing to high selectivity for the catalytic hydrogenation of alkynes. The catalytic activity was maintained after 7 cycles due to the strong interaction between the PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles and α-Al 2 O 3 as well as the encapsulation effect of mesoporous α-Al 2 O 3 . Thus, the current work provides a facile strategy for fabricating high-surface-area mesoporous α-Al 2 O 3 -supported catalysts for industrial catalysis applications.

Abstract:The semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene to styrene represents an important process for optimizing the polystyrene production and also a model reaction for the evaluation of selective hydrogenation catalysts. Although the alloying strategy and surface engineering for noble metal (particularly for Pd) catalysts can effectively inhibit the overhydrogenation of styrene, the selectivity of phenylacetylene semihydrogenation to styrene is generally below 95% near the full conversion. Here, we demonstrate the electronic modulation of Pd-based bimetallic nanocluster catalysts based on the strong metal-support interactions for improving the catalytic selectivity for phenylacetylene semihydrogenation. A series of Pd-M (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ga) bimetallic nanoclusters of ∼2 nm are immobilized on mesoporous sulfur-doped carbon (meso_S-C) supports, which exhibit a high selectivity of >97% for the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene to styrene. The strong interaction between metal and the meso_S-C supports enables the modulation of electronic structure of the bimetallic nanoparticles and thus leads to the selectivity enhancement for the phenylacetylene semihydrogenation.

Abstract:We reported here a strategy to use a defective nanodiamond-graphene (ND@G) to prepare an atomically dispersed metal catalyst, i.e., in the current case atomically dispersed palladium catalyst which is used for selective hydrogenation of acetylene in the presence of abundant ethylene. The catalyst exhibits remarkable performance for the selective conversion of acetylene to ethylene: high conversion (100%), ethylene selectivity (90%), and good stability. The unique structure of the catalyst (i.e., atomically dispersion of Pd atoms on graphene through Pd-C bond anchoring) blocks the formation of unselective subsurface hydrogen species and ensures the facile desorption of ethylene against the overhydrogenation to undesired ethane, which is the key for the outstanding selectivity of the catalyst.

Abstract:A Ru3+-mediated synthesis for the unique Pd concave nanostructures, which can directly harvest UV-to-visible light for styrene hydrogenation, is described. The catalytic efficiency under 100mWcm(-2) full-spectrum irradiation at room temperature turns out to be comparable to that of thermally (70 degrees C) driven reactions. The yields obtained with other Pd nanocrystals, such as nanocubes and octahedrons, are lower. The nanostructures reported here have sufficient plasmonic cross-sections for light harvesting in a broad spectral range owing to the reduced shape symmetry, which increases the solution temperature for the reaction by the photothermal effect. They possess a large quantity of atoms at corners and edges where local heat is more efficiently generated, thus providing active sites for the reaction. Taken together, these factors drastically enhance the hydrogenation reaction by light illumination.

Abstract:High-energy facets exposed nanotubular alumina as well as conventional alumina supported Pd catalysts were synthesized and applied to the selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene. Novel alumina supported catalyst presented higher selectivity at complete conversion of phenylacetylene. This could be related to the well dispersion of Pd and strong metal-support interaction, which are the consequences of the unique structural properties of the crystal plane regulated alumina. It helps create more active sites for hydrogenation meanwhile facilitates the desorption of alkene and thus suppresses the excess hydrogenation towards ethylbenzene.

Abstract:Semi-hydrogenation usually requires an effective catalyst to ensure selectivity, especially when reducible groups coexist in a molecule. Pd is widely used in the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes to synthesize alkenes, but the selectivity control is still challenging. Herein, we design a catalyst with a semi-encapsulated PdRh alloy heterojunction in a carbon layer for the selective semi-hydrogenation of 3-nitrophenylacetylene (3-NPA). Benefiting from the presence of a PdRh alloy heterojunction and a semi-encapsulated structure, the catalyst delivers good selectivity and maintains high activity. In addition, the carbon shell can ensure the stability of the catalyst and prolong the service life. This study provides ideas for the rational design of a catalyst to achieve a selective hydrogenation reaction for practical applications.
Synergistic Computational-Experimental Discovery of Highly Selective PtCu Nanocluster Catalysts for Acetylene Semihydrogenation

Abstract:Semihydrogenation of acetylene (SHA) in an ethylene-rich stream is an important process for polymer industries. Presently, Pd-based catalysts have demonstrated good acetylene conversion (X-C2H2), however, at the expense of ethylene selectivity (S-C2H4). In this study, we have employed a systematic approach using density functional theory (DFT) to identify the best catalyst in a Cu-Pt system. The DFT results showed that with a 55 atom system at similar to 1.1 Pt/Cu ratio for Pt28Cu27/Al2O3, the d-band center shifted -2.2 eV relative to the Fermi level leading to electron-saturated Pt, which allows only adsorption of ethylene via a pi-bond, resulting in theoretical 99.7% S-C2H4 at nearly complete X-C2H2. Based on the DFT results, Pt-Cu/Al2O3 (PtCu) and Pt/Al2O3 (Pt) nanocatalysts were synthesized via cluster beam deposition (CBD), and their properties and activities were correlated with the computational predictions. For bimetallic PtCu, the electron microscopy results show the formation of alloys. The bimetallic PtCu catalyst closely mimics the DFT predictions in terms of both electronic structure, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and catalytic activity. The alloying of Pt with Cu was responsible for the high C2H4 specific yield resulting from electron transfer between Cu and Pt, thus making PtCu a promising catalyst for SHA.
