Abstract:Less than a year after the 2018 Kīlauea caldera collapse and eruption, water appeared in newly deepened Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The lake—unprecedented in the written record—grew to a depth of ∼50 m before lava from the December 2020 eruption boiled it away. Surface water heightened concerns of potential phreatic or phreatomagmatic explosions but also offered a new means of possibly identifying eruption precursors. The U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) monitored the lake via direct visual observation, webcams, thermal imaging, colorimetry, and laser rangefinders. HVO also employed uncrewed aircraft systems to sample the water and measure near‐lake gas composition. The lake's δD and δ18O indicate a groundwater source with substantial evaporation. The initial sample had a salinity (total dissolved solids concentration) of 71,000 mg/L and was rich in sulfate (∼53,000 mg/L), iron (∼500 mg/L), and magnesium (∼10,000 mg/L). Subsequent samples were slightly more dilute. The water's pH (∼4), δ34S (+4.3‰), and surface temperatures (up to 85°C) suggest, rather than significant scrubbing of magmatic volatiles, leaching of basalt and reactions with sulfate minerals resulted in high concentrations of sulfate and other solutes. Thermodynamic modeling and precipitate mineralogy indicate that water composition was controlled by iron oxidation and sulfate dissolution. Although the lake exhibited no detectable precursors before the next eruption, and phreatic or phreatomagmatic explosions did not materialize, our multi‐parameter approach to monitoring yielded an enhanced understanding of the hydrologic, geologic, and magmatic conditions that led to the formation of the unique and short‐lived lake.

Abstract:Fundamental elemental component (total carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur) fluctuations help define the origin, depositional environment, and diagenetic alteration of source materials. To determine C, H, N, and S, solid samples are reacted with a catalyst, separated by chromatography, and detected by thermal conductivity on a FlashEA 1112 CHNS elemental analyzer. Organic carbon can be directly measured on the elemental analyzer by acidification of the sample to drive off carbonate as carbon dioxide before analyzing. Total organic carbon on this report is measured rather than calculated.

Abstract:Background, aims and scope: Lakes developing in volcano craters can become highly acidic through the influx of volcanic gases, yielding one of the chemically most extreme natural environments on earth. The Kawah Ijen crater lake in East Java (Indonesia) has a pH < 0.3. It is the source of the extremely acidic and metal-polluted river Banyupahit (45 km). The lake has a significant impact on the river ecosystem as well as on a densely populated area downstream, where agricultural fields are irrigated with water with a pH between 2.5 and 3.5. The chemistry of the river water seemed to have changed over the past decade and the negative effect in the irrigation area increased. A multidisciplinary approach was used to investigate the altered situation and to get insight in the water chemistry and the hydrological processes influencing these alterations. Moreover, a first investigation of the effects of the low pH on ecosystem health and human health was performed. Methods: Water samples were taken at different sites along the river and in the irrigation area. Sampling for macroinvertebrates was performed at the same sites. Samples of soil and crop were taken in the irrigation area. All samples were analysed for metals (using ICP-AES) and other elements, and concentrations were compared to local and international standards. Results and discussion: The river carries a very high load of SO4, NH4, PO4, Cl, F, Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Al and other potentially toxic elements. Precipitation and discharge data over the period of 1980-2000 clearly show that the precipitation on the Ijen plateau influences water chemistry of the downstream river. Metal concentrations in the river water exceed the concentrations mentioned in Indonesian and international quality guidelines, even in the downstream river and the irrigation area. Some metal concentrations are extremely high, especially iron (up to 1,600 mg/l) and aluminium (up to 3,000 mg/l). The food-webs in the acidic parts of the river are highly underdeveloped. No invertebrates were present in the extremely acidic water and, at pH 2.3, only chironomids were found. This also holds true for the river water with pH 3.3 in the downstream area. Agricultural soils in the irrigation area have a pH of 3.9 compared to a pH of 7.0 for soils irrigated with neutral water. Decreased yields of cultivated crops are probably caused by the use of Al containing acidic irrigation water. Increased levels of metals (especially Cd, Co, Ni and Mn) are found in different foodstuffs, but still remain within acceptable ranges. Considering local residents' diets, Cd levels may lead to an increased risk for the human health. Fluoride exposure is of highest concern, with levels in drinking water exceeding guideline values and a lot of local residents suffering from dental fluorosis. CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND OUTLOOK: In short, our data indicate that the Ijen crater lake presents a serious threat to the environment as well as human health and agricultural production.

Abstract:The crater lake of Kawah Ijen volcano, East Java, Indonesia, has displayed large and rapid changes in temperature at point locations during periods of unrest, but measurement techniques employed to date have not resolved how the lake’s thermal regime has evolved over both space and time. We applied a novel approach for mapping and monitoring variations in crater lake apparent surface (“skin”) temperatures at high spatial (∼32 cm) and temporal (every 2 min) resolution at Kawah Ijen on 18 September 2014. We used a ground-based FLIR T650sc camera with digital and thermal infrared (TIR) sensors from the crater rim to collect (1) a set of visible imagery around the crater during the daytime and (2) a time series of co-located visible and TIR imagery at one location from pre-dawn to daytime. We processed daytime visible imagery with the Structure-from-Motion photogrammetric method to create a digital elevation model onto which the time series of TIR imagery was orthorectified and georeferenced. Lake apparent skin temperatures typically ranged from ∼21 to 33 °C. At two locations, apparent skin temperatures were ∼4 and 7 °C less than in situ lake temperature measurements at 1.5 and 5-m depth, respectively. These differences, as well as the large spatio-temporal variations observed in skin temperatures, were likely largely associated with atmospheric effects such as the evaporative cooling of the lake surface and infrared absorption by water vapor and SO2. Calculations based on orthorectified TIR imagery thus yielded underestimates of volcanic heat fluxes into the lake, whereas volcanic heat fluxes estimated based on in situ temperature measurements (68 to 111 MW) were likely more representative of Kawah Ijen in a quiescent state. The ground-based imaging technique should provide a valuable tool to continuously monitor crater lake temperatures and contribute insight into the spatio-temporal evolution of these temperatures associated with volcanic activity.

Abstract:The depths of an ancient lake on Mars Gale crater on Mars was once a lake fed by rivers and groundwater. Hurowitz et al . analyzed 3.5 years of data from the Curiosity rover’s exploration of Gale crater to determine the chemical conditions in the ancient lake. Close to the surface, there were plenty of oxidizing agents and rocks formed from large, dense grains, whereas the deeper layers had more reducing agents and were formed from finer material. This redox stratification led to very different environments in different layers, which provides evidence for Martian climate change. Abstract:The Ijen volcano has Pleistocene age (294.00 ± 0.03 Ma), and this stratovolcano was very acidic crater water with a pH of 0-1. The acidic crater water seeps into the Banyupait river flow. Asembagus is a research area located on the northern slope of the Ijen volcano, and the Banyupait River drains this. The acidic river water flows from the Ijen Crater Lake, so the pH of the water river was very acidic. This study used several different analytic methodologies with some previous researchers, namely using the method of geological mapping, pH measurement, spectrophotometry, IRMS (Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer), and the technique of Induced Coupled Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Besides, the petrographic analysis is used to determine the composition of rock minerals due to rocks interacting with acidic water. Banyupait River water in the Asembagus area has a pH of river water around 3-7.3, SO4 (220-683 ppm), and the type of water is meteoric water. Also, concentrations of Ca, K, Mg in the west Banyupait river irrigation water flow showed higher levels when compared to the eastern Banyupait River water flow. Likewise, REE elements from the Asembagus region showed lower concentrations compared to Ijen Crater water. This change in the level of chemical elements is caused by the acidity of the Banyupait River being diluted or mixed with water from other water. However, the spring was not affected by acidic water. The process of acidic water interaction with rocks can also be observed from rocks traversed by the Banyupait River flow. Chalcedony and hematite replace the primary minerals of basaltic rocks. This research is expected to improve the quality of water needed by the Asembagus community so that people can live healthily.
Quantitative Assessment of Temporal Changes in Subaqueous Hydrothermal Activity in Active Crater Lakes During Unrest Based on a Time-Series of Lake Water Chemistry

Abstract:Regular sampling of lake water has been performed at many volcanoes to assess the state of volcanic activity. However, it is not clear whether the absolute concentrations or, instead, rate of changes in concentrations are more suitable for such assessments. In this study, we show that temporal changes in concentrations of an element in lake water are described by a simple differential equation, assuming changes in lake volume and chemical processes are negligible. The time constants (63% response time for changes in the chemical concentration in lake water) have a wide range varying between 20 and 1,000 days for the studied volcanoes in Japan, meaning it takes a long time to assess volcanic activity based on the absolute concentration of an element. In order to assess the volcanic activity in a shorter time period, based on a time-series of lake element concentration data, we developed a numerical model to calculate temporal changes in the steady-state concentration, which is proportional to the elemental concentrations of the bulk hydrothermal fluid injected from subaqueous fumaroles and hot springs. We applied our method to Yugama crater lake at Kusatsu–Shirane volcano, Japan, and quantitatively evaluated temporal changes in the hydrothermal input from 1964 to 2020. As a result, we detected changes in the Cl concentrations of the bulk hydrothermal input that were associated with unrest including the phreatic eruption in 1976 and earthquake swarms in 1989–1992 and 2014–2020. The future concentration in the lake water can be predicted from the most recent steady-state concentrations. Comparing the predicted concentration curve with the concentration obtained from lake water samples, it is possible to quickly assess whether the concentration of the bulk hydrothermal input has increased/decreased or remained constant.

Abstract:The lake waters of Kawah Ijen volcano are concentrated hyperacidic brines that obtain their composition from volcanic gases and water-rock interaction. Lake water and hydrothermal fluids seep through the western flank of the volcano where they precipitate gypsum and form the hyperacid Banyu Pahit river. In this contribution, we present compositional data from bi-weekly samples taken from the Banyu Pahit between 2015 and 2018 to evaluate whether these fluids can be used to monitor the hydrothermal system, and compare the fluids to the record of variability documented by the precipitated gypsum. Understanding the causal links between variability of the Banyu Pahit and the magmatic-hydrothermal processes operating in the Kawah Ijen system, and establishing a baseline for quiescence are pre-requisites to using the river for monitoring. Fluid samples were analysed at the Ijen observatory for SO4/Cl ratio using BaSO4 turbidity and AgCl gravimetry, and subsequently sent for ICP-MS and ICP-OES analyses. The data shows a first order seasonal variation that can be explained by variable input of neutral groundwater, but is underlain by more subtle trends. Temporally, there is a shift in the system from 2015 to 2016 to 2017 when the fluid contains a higher proportion of elements derived from rock alteration. The shift occurs at the peak of the rainy season and coincides with a substantial rainfall increase in 2017 compared to 2015–2016. At the start of 2018 there is a marked increase in Cu, coinciding with a gas burst in March 2018. We suggest that an increased meteoric water input led to an increase in water-rock interaction and dissolution of a Cu-sulphide phase in the hydrothermal system. The variability of the fluids over the 3-year sampling period does not exceed that of the longer record preserved by the gypsum precipitates, indicating that it is typical for the current style of activity.

Abstract:Past acid-sulfate hydrothermal systems on Mars have promise in their ability to have hosted life for billions of years. One method for analyzing these systems is to study analog environments on Earth. To assess the astrobiological potential of Martian acid-sulfate hydrothermal systems, the crater lake of the active Poás Volcano, Laguna Caliente, was sampled in 2013 and 2017. Laguna Caliente presents an extremely dynamic terrestrial environment with near-ambient to boiling temperatures, pH fluctuations from −0.87 to 1.5, a wide range of chemistries and redox potential, and frequent phreatic-to-phreatomagmatic eruptions. Samples of lake fluid, sulfur clumps, and lake bottom sediment underwent 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomic “shotgun” sequencing, which revealed this lake hosts an extremely low biodiversity of microorganisms dominated by Acidiphilium spp. Shotgun metagenomics of the samples suggests this community has numerous genetic adaptations that confer survival, including functional pathways to reduce the effects of toxic metals and numerous metabolic pathways utilizing a variety of simple and complex sugar molecules. The identification of these various metabolic pathways suggests adaptations related to carbon limited environments, fulfillment of high energy requirements, and survival in a hostile volcanic setting. The perseverance of life in Laguna Caliente indicates life on Mars could have thrived in analogous environments, stressing the need for the search for life in relict Martian acid-sulfate hydrothermal systems.

Abstract:Abstract Opinion is divided over whether the fluid responsible for the formation of high sulfidation epithermal deposits is a vapor or a liquid, and whether it is entirely volcanic or of mixed volcanic-meteoric origin. Observations made at Kawah Ijen, an active stratovolcano (mainly andesitic in composition) located in the Ijen Caldera Complex in Java, Indonesia, are used to address these issues. The Kawah Ijen crater is approximately 1 km in diameter, and hosts one of the world’s largest hyperacidic lakes (pH ~0). On the lake edge is a small and actively degassing solfatara field, which is surrounded by a much larger area of acid-sulfate alteration. This area was exposed during a phreatomagmatic eruption in 1817, which excavated the crater to a depth of 250 m, and comprises zones of residual silica, alunite-pyrite, and dickite/kaolinite. Based on the fractionation of 34S and 32S between alunite and pyrite, the acid-sulfate alteration occurred at a temperature between 200° and 300°C. High sulfidation epithermal mineralization accompanied the alteration in the form of massive and vein-hosted pyrite that contains up to 192 ppb Au, 9.2 ppm Ag, 6,800 ppm Cu, and 3,430 ppm As; these elements are invisible at the highest resolution of scanning electron microscopy, and thus either occur in the form of nanoparticles or are in solid solution in the pyrite. Condensed fumarolic gases released from the solfatara field and sampled at temperatures between 330° and 495°C contain up to 3 ppm Cu and 3.8 ppm As; the concentrations of Au and Ag are below detection. The pH of the condensed gas (water vapor) is ~−0.5. The above observations support a model in which highly acidic gases condensed ~250 m beneath the floor of the crater. Depending on the fluid/rock ratio, the condensed liquids altered the andesitic host rocks by leaching them to leave behind a residue of “vuggy silica” (high fluid/rock ratio), by replacing the primary minerals with alunite and pyrite (intermediate fluid/rock ratio), or by converting them to dickite/kaolinite (lower fluid/rock ratio). Gold-, silver-, and copper-bearing phases were undersaturated in the condensed liquids. However, they were able to concentrate by adsorbing on the surfaces of the growing pyrite crystals, which developed p-type conductive properties as a result of the uptake of arsenic. The metals were incorporated in the pyrite either by their electrochemical reduction to form native metal nanoparticles or through coupled substitutions with arsenic for iron and sulfur. The results of this study provide compelling evidence that high sulfidation epithermal precious metal mineralization can form directly from condensed magmatic gases.

Abstract:Nowadays, volcanic reservoirs show great development potential. However, the stimulation mechanism of volcanic reservoir is yet unclear. In this article, hydraulic fracturing, acid fracturing, and proppant-carrying acid fracturing of volcanic rock were analyzed by the laboratory tests. The average acid etching and proppant-embedded depths were assessed. The effect of different proppant sizes and acid types on fracture conductivity was studied. The results indicate that acid fracturing is failed to produce high-conductivity fractures. Large-sized proppants had larger embedded depths. For the hydraulic fracturing, the average depth of the 30/50 mesh proppant (5 kg/m 2 , 60 MPa) embedded in the volcanic rock is 33 μm, and the conductivity is 45.27 D·cm, which is 1.5 times that of the 40/70 mesh proppant. Embedded depth of proppant in the proppant-carrying acid fracturing (347 μm) was ten times larger than that in hydraulic fracturing (33 μm), but in terms of conductivity, hydraulic fracturing is only 20% better than proppant-carrying acid fracturing. This study is helpful to elucidate the mechanism of different stimulation methods and provide scientific means for the efficient development of volcanic reservoirs. Based on the three-dimensional (3D) surface data of the rock, the average acid etching depth and the average embedding depth of proppant are accurately calculated by a new method. The experimental results can provide a good basis for the selection of volcanic reservoir stimulation. The embedded depth and etching depth have an intuitive image display.

Abstract:The Poás volcano in Costa Rica has been studied as a Mars geochemical analog environment, since both the style of hydrothermal alteration present and the alteration mineralogy are consistent with Mars' relict hydrothermal systems. The site hosts an active volcano, with high-temperature fumaroles (up to 980°C) and an ultra-acidic lake. This lake, Laguna Caliente, is one of the most dynamic environments on Earth, with frequent phreatic eruptions, temperatures ranging from near-ambient to almost boiling, a pH range of -1 to 1.5, and a wide range of chemistries and redox potential. Martian acid-sulfate hydrothermal systems were likely similarly dynamic and equally challenging to life. The microbiology existing within Laguna Caliente was characterized for the first time, with sampling taking place in November, 2013. The diversity of the microbial community was surveyed via extraction of environmental DNA from fluid and sediment samples followed by Illumina sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The microbial diversity was limited to a single species of the bacterial genus Acidiphilium. This organism likely gets its energy from oxidation of reduced sulfur in the lake, including elemental sulfur. Given Mars' propensity for sulfur and acid-sulfate environments, this type of organism is of significant interest to the search for past or present life on the Red Planet. Abstract:The Asembagus irrigation area (East Java, Indonesia) receives a high input of fluoride (F) via surface water that partially originates from the hyperacid crater lake of the Ijen volcano. Endemic dental fluorosis among local residents has been ascribed to F in water wells. In this study, the total F intake by children and adults was estimated, based on concentrations in well waters and foods throughout the area. These values were compared with the Lowest Observed Adverse Effect Level (LOAEL) for dental fluorosis among children and skeletal fluorosis among adults. Fluorosis hazard maps were prepared, identifying the most hazardous locations in the area. It was concluded that there is not only a high risk of dental fluorosis, but also of skeletal fluorosis. Based on the total daily intake, the lowest F concentration in drinking water that poses a risk of developing fluorosis is approximately 0.5 mg/l for dental fluorosis and 1.1 mg/l for skeletal fluorosis. This is below 1.5 mg/l, which is both the guideline value for drinking water from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Indonesian drinking water standard. This is the first documented case of human health problems that may be directly associated with natural pollutants originating from a volcano-hosted crater lake.
Element flux to the environment of the passively degassing crater lake-hosting Kawah Ijen volcano, Indonesia, and implications for estimates of the global volcanic flux

Abstract:Abstract Volcanoes play an important role in the global cycling of elements by providing a pathway from the deep Earth to its surface. Here, we have constrained the flux to the environment for most elements of the periodic table for the passively degassing, crater lake-hosting Kawah Ijen volcano in the Indonesian arc. Our results indicate that emissions of Kawah Ijen are dominated by acid water outflow, especially for the ligands (Cl, F, Br), with active fumaroles contributing significant (semi)metals (e.g. Se, As, Sb, Hg), as well as C and S. The compositional signature of emissions from Kawah Ijen is similar to that of major volcanic emitters such as Etna, but element fluxes are smaller. This result provides the prerequisite foundation for extrapolating a small set of measured volcanic gas emissions to a global volcanic flux estimate. However, the aqueous flux (i.e. seepage of volcanic hydrothermal fluids and volcano-influenced groundwater) is at least as important in terms of element release, and the consideration of the gaseous flux alone thus represents a significant underestimate of the impact of volcanoes on their environment and the contribution of volcanic hydrothermal systems to global element cycling. Abstract:The characteristics of active volcanoes in Sumatra have been summarized based on the analysis of the relationship between seismicity, morphology, magma chemical composition, and eruption history. The level of volcano activity is linked to how partial melting depth, continuity distribution of hypocentre beneath each volcano to the trench line (magma dyke), visual activity seen on craters, chemical magma content, and reoccurrence of eruption analysis. The analysis result showed the current status of the volcano is inverted linear with partial melting depth. The scatter point of the hypocentre beneath the alert and warning volcano is continued to the trench line, but normal volcano status is discontinued. It was similar to volcanic activity seen in craters. It may relate to the quantity and activity of magma flow in dyke. According to reoccurrence analysis, Mt. Krakatau, Mt. Marapi, and Mt. Kerinci are highly vulnerable because they have the shortest accumulated eruption interval. However, all of active volcanoes have the potential for repeated massive eruptions, like what happened to Sinabung. Mix eruption is their eruption because magma types tend to be basaltic and andesitic. Only on Mt. Dempo is detected rhyolitic (SiO 2 more than 65%).

Abstract:Abstract Resource-constrained island populations have thrived in Hawai’i for over a millennium, but now face aggressive new challenges to fundamental resources, including the security and sustainability of water resources. Characterizing the microbial community in groundwater ecosystems is a powerful approach to infer changes from human impacts due to land management in hydrogeological complex aquifers. In this study, we investigate how geology and land management influence geochemistry, microbial diversity and metabolic functions. We sampled a total of 19 wells over 2-years across the Hualālai watershed of Kona, Hawai’i analyzing geochemistry, and microbial communities by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Geochemical analysis revealed significantly higher sulfate along the northwest volcanic rift zone, and high nitrogen (N) correlated with high on-site sewage disposal systems (OSDS) density. A total of 12,973 Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASV) were identified in 220 samples, including 865 ASVs classified as putative N and sulfur (S) cyclers. The N and S cyclers were dominated by a putative S-oxidizer coupled to complete denitrification ( Acinetobacter ), significantly enriched up to 4-times comparatively amongst samples grouped by geochemistry. The significant presence of Acinetobacter infers the bioremediation potential of volcanic groundwater for microbial-driven coupled S-oxidation and denitrification providing an ecosystem service for island populations dependent upon groundwater aquifers.

Abstract:Fluids play a major role in facilitating igneous/metamorphic processes in the Earth’s crust and mantle. In this study, we investigate the nature and composition of fluids in Earth’s interior by studying the lower crustal rocks. We compare accessory minerals (e.g., apatite, monazite, allanite, and titanite), their texture, mineral reactions and composition among regionally distributed metamorphosed mafic and felsic rocks representing the roots of Neoarchean arc magmatism from the Nilgiri Block of the Southern Granulite Terrane in India. Regional trends in accessory minerals show the formation of monazite, allanite, and titanite in the felsic rocks. Apatite is depleted in REEs in all the rock types, irrespective of the difference in their whole-rock chemistry. Textural features and mineral reactions show that these accessory minerals were affected by fluids present in the lower crustal conditions. By comparing our results with those from previous experimental results, we further show that acidic CO2-H2O-HCl-HF fluids stable in lower crustal conditions could have resulted in these chemical and textural features. Dielectric constant of water is high (10–35 compared to lower crustal conditions) in high-pressure and low-temperature conditions of subduction zones and the upper mantle. Such conditions would enhance dissociation of HCl (compared to lower crust) and result in acidic fluids during dehydration reactions in subduction zones and in the upper mantle. Our results have important implications in understanding the nature and composition of fluids in Earth’s interior and would be helpful to model the tectonic and deep geochemical processes in both early and modern conditions in planetary interiors.

Abstract:Ancient lake system at Gale crater Since 2012, the Curiosity rover has been diligently studying rocky outcrops on Mars, looking for clues about past water, climate, and habitability. Grotzinger et al. describe the analysis of a huge section of sedimentary rocks near Gale crater, where Mount Sharp now stands (see the Perspective by Chan). The features within these sediments are reminiscent of delta, stream, and lake deposits on Earth. Although individual lakes were probably transient, it is likely that there was enough water to fill in low-lying depressions such as impact craters for up to 10,000 years. Wind-driven erosion removed many of these deposits, creating Mount Sharp. Science , this issue p. 10.1126/science.aac7575 , see also p. 167

Abstract:Abstract A better characterization of subsurface processes in hydrothermal systems is key to a deeper understanding of fluid-rock interaction and ore-forming mechanisms. Vent systems in oceanic crust close to subduction zones, like at Brothers volcano and in the eastern Manus basin, are known to be especially ore rich. We measured B concentrations and isotope ratios of unaltered and altered lava that were recovered from drilling sites at Brothers volcano and Snowcap (eastern Manus basin) to test their sensitivity for changing alteration conditions with depth. In addition, for Brothers volcano, quartz-water oxygen isotope thermometry was used to constrain variations in alteration temperature with depth. All altered rocks are depleted in B compared to unaltered rocks and point to interaction with a high-temperature (>150°C) hydrothermal fluid. The δ11B values of altered rocks are variable, from slightly lower to significantly higher than those of unaltered rocks. For Brothers volcano, at the Upper Cone, we suggest a gradual evolution from a fluid- to a more rock-dominated system with increasing depth. In contrast, the downhole variations of δ11B at Snowcap as well as δ11B and δ18O variations at the NW Caldera (Site U1530) of Brothers volcano are suggested to indicate changes in water-rock ratios and, in the latter case, also temperature, with depth due to permeability contrasts between different lithology and alteration type boundaries. Furthermore, δ11B values from the NW Caldera (Site U1527) might point to a structural impact on the fluid pathway. These differences in the subseafloor fluid flow regime, which ranges from more pervasive and fluid-controlled to stronger and controlled by lithological and structural features, have significant influence on alteration conditions and may also impact metal precipitation within the sea floor.
