Abstract:In biological systems, redox-driven catalytic processes efficiently occur through controllable active sites with a clearly defined stepwise charge transfer pathway. For artificial catalytic systems, especially pure organic, polymeric, and heterogeneous photocatalysts, the main challenge lies in gaining precise control of electron transfer pathways through the catalytic active sites. Here, we design crystalline phenothiazine-anchored covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) as a benchmark example of pure organic photocatalysts with precisely controllable unidirectional electron transfer pathways. Monofunctionalized phenothiazine units were copolymerized onto CTFs, leading to defined electron transfer within the polymer network with a strong dipole and a high built-in electric field upon light-induced charge separation. By combining in situ spectroscopic methods and transient time-dependent density functional theory calculations, we reveal that sulfur atoms on phenothiazine units were the major oxidative sites by formation of photogenerated holes. High catalytic activity, recyclability, and general applicability of the designed CTFs were demonstrated by important oxidation reactions such as oxidative coupling of primary amines, formation of benzimidazoles, oxidative formylation of N, N-dimethylanilines, and dehydration of aldoximes.

Abstract:Photocatalysis using transition‐metal complexes is widely considered the future of effective and affordable clean‐air technology. In particular, redox‐stable, easily accessible ligands are decisive. Here, we report a straightforward and facile synthesis of a new highly stable 2,6‐bis(triazolyl)pyridine ligand, containing a nitrile moiety as a masked anchoring group, using copper(I)‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) click reaction. The reported structure mimics the binding motif of uneasy to synthesize ligands. Pulse radiolysis under oxidizing and reducing conditions provided evidence for the high stability of the formed radical cation and radical anion 2,6‐di(1,2,3‐triazol‐1‐yl)‐pyridine compound, thus indicating the feasibility of utilizing this as a ligand for redox active metal complexes and the sensitization of metal‐oxide semiconductors (e.g., TiO2 nanoparticles or nanotubes).

Abstract:The first nitro-group-initiated redox-neutral [3+2] cycloaddition of nitrocyclopropanes with alkenes by using visible-light-absorbing transition-metal complexes was reported. High diastereoselectivities were observed for two quaternary carbon centers on the ring and validated by DFT calculations. Spiro- or polycyclic structures can be constructed smoothly. Cyclic γ-amino acid derivatives and polysubstituted cyclic amino alcohols can be obtained easily through reduction of the nitro group.

Abstract:A powerful approach to generate photocatalysts for the highly selective reduction of nitrobenzene using light as the driving force is a combination of photosensitizers and electron-storable components in a cooperative photocatalysis fashion. Herein, a new precious metal-free photocatalyst, {ZnW-TPT}, was prepared by incorporating a Zn-substituted monovacant Keggin polyanion [SiZnW11O39]6– and a photoactive organic bridging link 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT) into a framework. In this structure, the direct coordination bond between [SiZnW11O39]6– and the TPT ligand and the π–π interactions between TPT molecules help separate and migrate photogenerated carriers, which improves the photocatalytic activity of {ZnW-TPT}. Abstract:We report herein a new cobalt(II/III) mixed-valence metal-organic framework formulated as [CoIICo2III(μ3-O)(bdc)3(tpt)]·guest 1, where bdc = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate and tpt = 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridinyl)-1,3,5-triazine, which can be used as a redox-active heterogeneous catalyst for selective oxidation of cyclohexene on the allylic position without destroying the adjacent double bond. Two oxidants were chosen to demonstrate this result. For using tert-butyl hydroperoxide, the conversion rate is 63% and only allylic oxidation products ( tert-butyl-2-cyclohexenyl-1-peroxide, 86%; 2-cyclohexen-1-one, 14%) are found, whereas if using O2 as oxidant, a total conversion of 38% is achieved and also only the allylic oxidation products (cyclohexenyl hydroperoxide, 72%; 2-cyclohexen-1-one, 20%; and cyclohex-2-en-1-ol, 8%) are found. The absence of any adduct on the double bond may be due to the unique radical chain mechanism triggered by the mixed-valent [CoIICo2III(μ3-O)] centers.

Abstract:Reported herein is a visible-light-induced, catalyst-free intramolecular cyclization of 4-phenylsulfonyl-2,3,5,6-tetrachloropyridine, leading to rapid assembly of a series of unprecedented benzo[4,5]thieno[3,2-c]pyridine 5,5-dioxide scaffolds under mild conditions. The rational introduction of a perchloropyridin-4-yl module significantly facilitated this photoinduced process and offers a versatile platform for broad structural variation. Mechanistic studies revealed that a newly identified charge-transfer complex with carbonate is crucial to this photoinduced process.

Abstract:The visible-light-driven photocatalytic reduction reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) (CO2RR) to value-added fuels presents a feasible approach to curb anthropogenic CO2 emissions and mitigate the increasing energy crisis. However, developing photocatalysts with excellent performance still remains a great challenge in this field. Herein Co,Cu,N-codoped carbon nanoparticles (Co1Cu1/NC) were fabricated through the pyrolysis of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) with Cu(NO3)2 adsorbed inside the cavities and CoTBPP decorated over the surface of ZIF. Spherical aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements disclose the dual-metal single-atomic nature of Co1Cu1/NC consisting of atomically dispersed Co-Cu pair sites on a nitrogen-doped carbon support. Extended X-ray absorption fine-structure analysis reveals the tetra-N-coordinated nature of each metal in Co1Cu1/NC (N2-Co-N2-Cu-N2). For the purpose of comparative study, Co,N-and Cu,N-codoped carbon nanoparticles (Co1/NC and Cu1/NC) also with single atomic site nature have been fabricated following the same route. The as-prepared Co1Cu1/NC exhibits highly effective photocatalytic CO2-to-CO reduction with a considerably high CO-generating yield of 22.46 mmol g-1 and a CO selectivity of 83.4% after 2 h of visible-light irradiation. Experimental characterizations and in particular theoretical calculations disclose the close association of the remarkable CO2RR catalytic activity of Co1Cu1/NC with the synergetic effect of the Co-Cu atomic-pair sites, which facilitate the conversion of CO2 to CO via lowering the energy barrier for the formation of the *COOH intermediate. This work paves a new avenue for the rational design and construction of atomic-pair photocatalysts with boosted performance.

Abstract:Developing new photocatalysts for reduction of nitroarenes to anilines under mild conditions is very significant. Herein, a new polyoxometalate-based metal–organic framework (POMOF), {[Co(H2O)]2[Co2(H2O)6(TPT)][Co(TPT)PW11O39]}·3H2O·TPT (namely, CoW-TPT, TPT = 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine), was prepared by incorporating Co(II)-substituted Keggin-type anions [PCoW11O39]5– and a photosensitizer (TPT) into a framework. In this structure, the direct coordination bond between [PCoW11O39]5– and TPT ligand and π···π interactions between TPT molecules are beneficial for the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers, thus improving the photocatalytic activity of CoW-TPT. The combination of both photosensitizer TPT and the electron-storable component [PCoW11O39]5– in a cooperative photocatalysis fashion is conducive to the photocatalytic multielectron reduction of nitroarenes. Abstract:Quinazoline (Qz)‐linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been constructed via a three‐component reaction of ortho‐acylanilines, benzaldehydes and NH4OAc. The structure of Qz‐COFs has been confirmed by solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared and powder X‐ray diffraction patterns. The Qz‐COFs possess high chemical stability, showing good endurance to strong acid, strong base, oxidant, reductant and other conditions. Particularly, Qz‐COF‐3 can catalyze the aerobic photooxidation of toluene and other compounds containing C(sp3)‐H bonds.

Abstract:General access to highly valuable seven-membered rings via Büchner-type reaction remains a formidable challenge. Here we report a Cu-catalyzed intermolecular oxidation of alkynes using N-oxides as oxidants, which enables expedient preparation of valuable benzo[6,7]azepino[2,3-b]quinolines and pyridine-based diones. Importantly, in contrast to the well-established gold-catalyzed intermolecular alkyne oxidation, the dissociated pyridine or quinoline partner could be further utilized to construct N-heterocycles in this system and the reaction most likely proceeds by a Büchner-type ring expansion pathway. A mechanistic rationale for this cascade cyclization is supported by DFT calculations.

Herein, we introduce a photoredox-catalyzed approach for the ring opening and 1,3-oxypyridylation of aryl cyclopropanes using 4-cyanopyridines and carboxylic acids. Abstract:Inorganic functionalization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), such as incorporation of multiple inorganic building blocks with distinct metals into one structure and further modulation of the metal charges, endows the porous materials with significant properties toward their applications in catalysis. In this work, by an exploration of the role of 4-pyrazolecarboxylic acid (H2PyC) in the formation of trinuclear copper pyrazolate as a metalloligand in situ, four new MOFs with multiple components in order were constructed through one-pot synthesis. This metalloligand strategy provides multicomponent MOFs with new topologies (tub for FDM-4 and tap for FDM-5) and is also compatible with a second organic linker for cooperative construction of complex MOFs (1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid for FDM-6 and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid for FDM-7). The component multiplicity of these MOFs originates from PyC's ability to separate Cu and Zn on the basis of their differentiated binding affinities toward pyrazolate and carboxylate. These MOFs feature reversible and facile redox transformations between CuI3(PyC)3 and CuII3(μ-OH)(PyC)3(OH)3 without altering the connecting geometries of the units, thus further contributing to the significant catalytic activities in the oxidation of CO and aromatic alcohols and the decomposition of H2O2. This study on programming multiple inorganic components into one framework and modulating their electronic structures is an example of functionalizing the inorganic units of MOFs with a high degree of control.
Covalent Triazine Framework Nanoparticles Via Size‐Controllable Confinement Synthesis for Enhanced Visible‐Light Photoredox Catalysis

Abstract:AbstractFor metal‐free, organic conjugated polymer‐based photocatalysts, synthesis of defined nanostructures is still highly challenging. Here, we report the formation of covalent triazine framework (CTF) nanoparticles via a size‐controllable confined polymerization strategy. The uniform CTF nanoparticles exhibited significantly enhanced activity in the photocatalytic formation of dibenzofurans compared to the irregular bulk material. The optoelectronic properties of the nanometer‐sized CTFs could be easily tuned by copolymerizing small amounts of benzothiadiazole into the conjugated molecular network. This optimization of electronic properties led to a further increase in observed photocatalytic efficiency, resulting in total an 18‐fold enhancement compared to the bulk material. Full recyclability of the heterogeneous photocatalysts as well as catalytic activity in dehalogenation, hydroxylation and benzoimidazole formation reactions demonstrated the utility of the designed materials.

Abstract:Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) are promising heterogeneous photocatalyst candidates owing to their excellent stability, conjugacy, and tunability. In this study, a series of CTFs decorated with different substituents (H, MeO, and F) were synthesised and utilised as photocatalysts for C-H activation reactions. The corresponding optoelectronic properties could be precisely regulated by the electronic effects of different substituents in the nanopore channels of the CTFs; these CTFs were effective photocatalysts for C-H activation in organic synthesis due to their unique structures and optoelectronic properties. Methoxy-substituted CTF (MeO-CTF) exhibited extraordinary catalytic performance and reusability in C-H functionalization by constructing an electronic donor-acceptor system, achieving the highest yield in the photocatalytic C3-H hydroxylation of 2-phenylimidazole[1,2-α]pyridine. This strategy provides a new scaffold for the rational design of CTFs as efficient photocatalysts for organic synthesis.
A Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Strategy to the Redox-Neutral Photocatalytic CO2 Fixation

Abstract:Herein, we report our study on the design and development of a novel photocarboxylation method. We have used an organic photoredox catalyst (PC, 4CzIPN) and differently substituted dihydropyridines (DHPs) in combination with an organic base (1,5,7-triazabicyclodec-5-ene, TBD) to access a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) based manifold. In depth mechanistic investigations merging experimental analysis (NMR, IR, cyclic voltammetry) and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the key activity of a H-bonding complex between the DHP and the base. The thermodynamic and kinetic benefits of the PCET mechanism allowed the implementation of a redox-neutral fixation process leading to synthetically relevant carboxylic acids (18 examples with isolated yields up to 75%) under very mild reaction conditions. Finally, diverse product manipulations were performed to demonstrate the synthetic versatility of the obtained products.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted growing interests as new material platform for a range of applications. In this study, a triazine-carbazole-based covalent organic framework (COF-TCZ) was designed as highly porous material with conjugated donor-acceptor networks, and feasibly synthesized by the Schiff condensation of 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tr ianiline (TAPB) and 9-(4-formylphenyl)-9H-carbazole-3,6-dicarbaldehyde (CZTA) under the solvothermal condition. Considering the effect of linkage, the imine-linked COF-TCZ was further oxidized to obtain an amide-linked covalent organic framework (COF-TCZ-O). The as-synthesized COFs show high crystallinity, good thermal and chemical stability, and excellent photoactive properties. Two π-conjugated triazine-carbazole-based COFs with tunable linkages are beneficial for light-harvesting capacity and charge separation efficiency, which are empolyed as photocatalysts for the oxidation reaction of N-aryltetrahydroisoquinoline. The COFs catalyst systems exhibit the outstanding photocatalytic performance with high conversion, photostability and recyclability. Photoelectrochemical tests were employed to examine the behavior of photogenerated charge carriers in photo-illumination system. The control experiments provide further insights into the nature of photocatalysis. In addition, the current research also provided a valuable approach for developing photofunctional COFs to meet challenge in achieving the great potential of COFs materials in organic conversion.
