Abstract:Objective:To explore the effect of electroencephalogram(ECG) biofeedback on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children(ADHD).Methods:38 ADHD children aged 7~15 years underwent EEG biofeedback treatment for 20 times.Assessment of clinlcal symptom and cognitive function test were carried out before and after treatment,then the results were compared with those of healthy children.Results:There was significantly difference in hyperactivity factor,hyperactivity index,short-term memory,Stroop color test,word interference test,the first and second part of number cancellation test and omission rate in CPT before and after treatment in ADHD children(t=2.755,t=2.189).There was no difference in short-term memory,the first and second part of number cancellation test and omission rate in CPT between healthy children and children after treatment(P>0.05).Conclusion:Clinlcal symptom and cognitive function improve after EEG biofeedback treatment in ADHD children,some even as good as healthy children.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by electroencephalograph(ECG) Biofeedback gradually receives attentions: however, there are few reports on classification researches of audition and visual perception.OBJECTIVE: To explore the effectiveness of EEG biofeedback on children with ADHD.DESIGN: A randomized self-coutrolled study before and after treatment.SETTING and PARTICIPANTS: A total of 30 ADHD children who accorded with the diagnostic criteria of American Mental Disorder Diagnosis and Statistic Manuel(fourth edition) were selected for the study from Children's Mental Health Clinic of Nanjing Brain Hospital.INTERVENTIONS: Children with ADHD were treated with EEG biofeedback therapy by the researching staff. Integrated Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance test(IVA-CPT) was used to evaluate before treatment and the therapeutic effectiveness after 20 and 40 times of the therapies.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Integrate feedback control quotient and integrate attention quotient.RESULTS: After 20 times of treatments, the integrate feedback control quotient increased from 87.38 ± 15.71 to 98.56 + 10.78, ( t =4.59, P ＜0.01 ); integrate attention quotient increased from 70.38 + 16.22 to 88.94 + 16.37(t =4.68, P＜ 0.01 ). After 40 times of treatment, the integrate feedback control quotient increased to 107 ± 8.43(t =5.38, P ＜0.01 ), and integrate attention quotient increased to 104. 56 ± 12.67( t =8.76. P ＜ 0.01 ) . Each EEG biofeedback quotient significantly improved compared with that before therapy( P ＜ 0.01 ).CONCLUSION: EEG biofeedback therapy has a confirmed therapeutic effectiveness, which requires more training time to treat children with obvious ADfD than those with hyperactivity-impulsion.

Abstract:Objective To explore the therapeutic effect of electroencephalograph(EEG)biofeedback on clinical symptoms and cognitive function of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).Methods Twenty children aged(10.4±2.2)years old who were diagnosed as ADHD according to American Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental disorders the 4th ed received EEG biofeedback treatment.The treatment was administered by Autogenic A620 machine,θ wave(4-8 Hz)was suppressed and sensory motor rate wave was strengthened(12-15 Hz)at the same time.The treatment was total 40 times.Before and after treatment,Conner's Behavior Rating Scale-parent questionnaire was administered to assess the clinical symptoms,wechsler memory scale(WMS)to assess the long-term memory,short-term memory and instantaneous memory,number cancellation test and stroop test were used to assess the cognitive process speed and selective attention,and continuous performance test(CPT)was administered to assess the attention and impulsiveness.The children in healthy control group who compared with ADHD children by one to one came from the primary or middle school near the hospital,the age difference between ADHD child and healthy control group was within 6 months.All the measurements were administered to the healthy control group.Results After the EEG biofeedback treatment,the score of behavior factor in Conners Scale decreased significantly(P<0.05),short-term memory in WMS increased significantly(P<0.05),the time of Stroop color and word-interference test shortened significantly(Pa<0.05),and all the 3 parts scores in number cancellation test improved significantly(Pa<0.05).There were no significant differences between the ADHD group and healthy control group on Conners' somatic factor,hyperactivity factor and anxiety factor,instantaneous-memory in WMS,time of stroop color test,word test and color-interference effect,all the 3 parts scores in number cancellation test,omission rate in CPT(Pa>0.05).Conclusions Forty sessions EEG biofeedback can improve clinical symptoms,attention,memory,selective attention and cognitive process speed of ADHD children significantly,some indicators even become normal.

Abstract:objective To explore the effectiveness of EEG biofeedback on children with ADHD. Methods Children with ADHD were divided into three subgroups, and the three subgroups were treated with EEG biofeedback therapy. The effects of 40 times treatments were compared with those of 20 times treatments. Results After 20 and 40 times treatments, the EEG biofeedback quotients of the three groups changed, and the clinical symptoms improved. The hyperactive-impulsive group had significant different quotients and symptoms between 20 and 40 times treatments. Conclusion EEG biofeedback therapy is an effective way to treat children with ADHD.

Abstract:Neurofeedback training is a common treatment option for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Given theta/beta-based neurofeedback (T/B NF) training targets at the electrophysiological characteristics of children with ADHD, benefits for attention may be expected. PsycINFO, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched through December 31, 2020. Studies were evaluated with Risk of Bias tools. Within-group effects based on Pre- and Post-treatment comparisons of the Intervention Group, and Between-group effects based on the between-group differences from Pre-treatment to Post-treatment were calculated. Nineteen studies met selection criteria for systematic review, 12 of them were included in meta-analysis. Within-group effects were medium at Post-treatment and large at Follow-up. Between-group analyses revealed that T/B NF was superior to waitlist control and physical activities, but not stimulant medication. Results showed that T/B NF has benefits for attention in children with ADHD, however, cautions should be taken when interpreting the findings.

Abstract:Objective To study the effect of biofeedback balance training on cognitive function of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.Methods From Sep.2001 to Sep.2004,36 cases were diagnosed according to the diagnostic criteria of DSM-IV,ranging from 10 to 16 years old.Pre- and post-Balance Master treatment (20 times),C-WISC-R,WIMS and STROOP Test were administered.And they were also compared to the normal control.Results Long term memory,memory quotient and the free-from-distractibility factor of C-WISC-R were lower than normal control.In Stroop test,the finishing time and time for eliminating the interference of word and color was longer than normal control;false number in C and D part was more than normal control.After therapy long-term memory,short-term memory and memory quotient in WMS were improved (P<0.05).The free-from-distractibility factor of C-WISC-R were increased significantly (P<0.001).Finishing time of D part has a decreased tendency(P=0.074).Conclusion Balance master therapy can improve cognitive function of ADHD child to a certain degree,especially in improving concentration,memory and impulsive control ability.

Abstract:Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder mainly characterized by impairments in cognitive functions. Functional neuroimaging studies carried out in individuals with AD/HD have shown abnormal functioning of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) during tasks involving selective attention. In other respects, there is mounting evidence that neurofeedback training (NFT) can significantly improve cognitive functioning in AD/HD children. In this context, the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study was conducted to measure the effect of NFT on the neural substrates of selective attention in children with AD/HD. Twenty AD/HD children--not taking any psychostimulant and without co-morbidity-participated to the study. Fifteen children were randomly assigned to the Experimental (EXP) group (NFT), whereas the other five children were assigned to the Control (CON) group (no NFT). Subjects from both groups were scanned 1 week before the beginning of the NFT (Time 1) and 1 week after the end of this training (Time 2), while they performed a Counting Stroop task. At Time 1, for both groups, the Counting Stroop task was associated with significant loci of activation in the left superior parietal lobule. No activation was noted in the ACC. At Time 2, for both groups, the Counting Stroop task was still associated with significant activation of the left superior parietal lobule. This time, however, for the EXP group only there was a significant activation of the right ACC. These results suggest that in AD/HD children, NFT has the capacity to normalize the functioning of the ACC, the key neural substrate of selective attention.

Abstract:Objective To explore the efficacy of different course of EEG biofeedback treatment on ADHD children.Methods Twenty children according to DSM-IV Criteria of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD)were included in EEG biofeedback treatment.Conners Rating Scale,Wechsler Memory Scale(WMS),Number Cancellation Test,Stroop Test were tested before treatment,after 20 sessions and after 40 sessions of EEG biofeedback treatment.The results of ADHD children were also compared with the normal children.Results After 20 sessions' treatment,ADHD children's clinical symptoms had no improvement,but short-term memory in WMS,time of Stroop color test and Stroop color interference test,and the first and second part of Number Cancellation Test improved,having no significant difference with normal controls(P > 0.05).After 40 sessions' treatment,Conners' somatic factor and anxiety factor,instant memory,Stroop word test and the third part of Number Cancellation Test treatment continued to improve,and had no significant difference with normal controls(P > 0.05).But the long-term memory,Stroop word-interference test,Conners' behavior factor,learning factor,hyperactivity factor and hyperactivity index were worse than the normal controls(P < 0.05).Conclusion Forty session' EEG feedback treatment is more effective than 20 sessions' on ADHD children's clinical symptoms and cognitive functions,some even as good as the normal children after 40 sessions treatment.

Abstract:Objective To examine the curative effect of EEG biofeedback therapy on children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),and to investigate the neural mechanism underlying the executive function in children with ADHD.Methods 42 children with ADHD participated a Go/Nogo task before and after the EEG biofeedback therapy which was consisted of 20 times of treatments.The curative effect was evaluated using the behavioral and electrophysiological indexes associated with the Go/Nogo processing in the experiment.Results Commission error significantly decreased after the therapy ( (2.95 ±2.22 ) vs (4.65 ±4.47),P＜0.05 ).Latencies of P2 ( (210.00 ± 27.54) ms vs ( 228.27 ± 34.17 ) ms) and N2 components ( ( 310.59 ± 45.82) ms vs (328.00 ± 42.27)ms) elicited by Go trials significantly exhibited shorter at the end of therapy.Additionally,the amplitude of N2 component elicited by Nogo trials exhibited significantly decreased after therapy ((0.23 ±3.79)μV vs (-1.84 ± 4.23 ) μV,P ＜ 0.05).Conclusion The EEG biofeedback therapy is effective in debasing the hyperactivity/impulsive behaviors and improving the ability of target detection,which may be beneficial to the attention ability and conflict detecting in children with ADHD.EEG biofeedback is an effective treatment to ADHD. Abstract:Objective To explore the effectiveness and the characteristics of EEG biofeedback treatment on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) Methods Fifty seven children with ADHD diagnosed according to the DSM Ⅲ R criteria were enrolled in the study They were randomly assigned to the EEG biofeedback treatment (EEG) group (28 cases) and the Ritalin (MED) treatment group (29 cases) They were evaluated before, during, and after treatment with Conner′s behavior rating scale, side effects scale, Wechsler Intelligence Scale, TOVA, and Quantitative EEG All the subjects were followed up in one to three months after treatment Results (1) The score of Conner′s Rating Scale decreased significantly in both groups The MED group showed a relatively more decrease of scores in the behavior scale, but rebounded when the treatment stopped (hyperactivity index score for example: pretreatment 16 14±4 64,post treatment 4 23±1 45,follow up 13 52±5 08), while the EEG group showed a continual improvement (hyperactivity index: pretreatment 16 04±6 31, post treatment 9 26± 3 09, follow up 8 76±3 79) Side effects emerged more frequently (82%) in MED group but none in EEG group (2) Both groups improved significantly on the Omission and Commission level of TOVA ( P 0 05), the MED group made a significant improvement on Variability of Response to medicine ( P 0 01) In follow up, the advantage was replaced and became even worse on Omission compared to pretreatment The EEG group improved continuously (3) The EEG group gained a significant increase in score of the Free from Distractibility Factor of Wechsler Intelligence Scale (pretreatment 93 7±13 3,follow up 106 3±14 1, P 0 01) (4) A significant increase of relative power of 8 13 Hz waves and decrease of 0 4 Hz waves was found in EEG group through the Quantitative EEG No such results were found in MED group Conclusion The effectiveness of EEG biofeedback is affirmed Compared to the psycho stimulant Ritalin, it shows slower but relatively permanent effects, and a special effect on improving of attention and the EEG spectrum

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The use of brain-computer interface in neurofeedback therapy for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a relatively new approach. We conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to determine whether an 8-week brain computer interface (BCI)-based attention training program improved inattentive symptoms in children with ADHD compared to a waitlist-control group, and the effects of a subsequent 12-week lower-intensity training.STUDY DESIGN: We randomized 172 children aged 6-12 attending an outpatient child psychiatry clinic diagnosed with inattentive or combined subtypes of ADHD and not receiving concurrent pharmacotherapy or behavioral intervention to either the intervention or waitlist-control group. Intervention involved 3 sessions of BCI-based training for 8 weeks, followed by 3 training sessions per month over the subsequent 12 weeks. The waitlist-control group received similar 20-week intervention after a wait-time of 8 weeks.RESULTS: The participants' mean age was 8.6 years (SD = 1.51), with 147 males (85.5%) and 25 females (14.5%). Modified intention to treat analyzes conducted on 163 participants with at least one follow-up rating showed that at 8 weeks, clinician-rated inattentive symptoms on the ADHD-Rating Scale (ADHD-RS) was reduced by 3.5 (SD 3.97) in the intervention group compared to 1.9 (SD 4.42) in the waitlist-control group (between-group difference of 1.6; 95% CI 0.3 to 2.9 p = 0.0177). At the end of the full 20-week treatment, the mean reduction (pre-post BCI) of the pooled group was 3.2 (95% CI 2.4 to 4.1).CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the BCI-based attention training program can improve ADHD symptoms after a minimum of 24 sessions and maintenance training may sustain this improvement. This intervention may be an option for treating milder cases or as an adjunctive treatment.

A randomized controlled study of remote computerized cognitive, neurofeedback, and combined training in the treatment of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

Abstract:There is an increasing interest in non-pharmacological treatments for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD), especially digital techniques that can be remotely delivered, such as neurofeedback (NFT) and computerized cognitive training (CCT). In this study, a randomized controlled design was used to compare training outcomes between remotely delivered NFT, CCT, and combined NFT/CCT training approaches. A total of 121 children with AD/HD were randomly assigned to the NFT, CCT, or NFT/CCT training groups, with 80 children completing the training program. Pre- and post-training symptoms (primary outcome), executive and daily functions were measured using questionnaires as well as resting EEG during eyes-closed (EC) and eyes-open (EO) conditions. After 3 months of training, the inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms, inhibition, working memory, learning and life skills of the three groups of children were significantly improved. The objective EEG activity showed a consistent increase in the relative alpha power in the EO condition among the three training groups. Training differences were not observed between groups. There was a positive correlation between pre-training EO relative alpha power and symptom improvement scores of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, as well as a negative correlation between pre-training inattention scores and change in EO relative alpha. This study verified the training effects of NFT, CCT, and combined NFT/CCT training in children with AD/HD and revealed an objective therapeutic role for individual relative alpha activity. The verified feasibility and effectiveness of home-based digital training support promotion and application of digital remote training.

Abstract:Background Limited research exists regarding the effectiveness of electroencephalogram (EEG) neurofeedback training for children with cerebral palsy (CP) and co‐occurring attention deficits (ADs), despite the increasing prevalence of these dual conditions. This study aimed to fill this gap by examining the impact of neurofeedback training on the attention levels of children with CP and AD. Methods Nineteen children with both CP and co‐occurring ADs were randomly assigned to either a neurofeedback or control group. The neurofeedback group received 20 sessions of training, lasting approximately 1 h per day, twice a week. Theta/beta ratios of the quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) recordings were measured pre‐training and post‐training in the resting state. The Continuous Performance Test (CPT), the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills—3rd Version (TVPS‐3) and the Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS) were measured at pre‐ and post‐training. Results The neurofeedback group showed both decreased theta/beta ratios compared with control group (p = 0.04) at post‐training and a within‐group improvement during training (p = 0.02). Additionally, the neurofeedback group had a trend of decreased omission rates of the CPT (p = 0.08) and the visual sequential memory and the visual closure subscores in the TVPS‐3, compared with the control group (p = 0.02 and p = 0.01, respectively). Conclusions The results suggested that children with CP and co‐occurring AD may benefit from neurofeedback training in their attention level. Further research is needed to explore long‐term effects and expand its application in this population.

Abstract:Many college students struggle with symptoms of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that might affect their academic performance and overall well-being. This study sought to investigate the effects of a neurofeedback (NF) training protocol on college students’ ADHD symptoms scores. Eleven college students with ADHD diagnoses were provided 16 sessions of NF and were assessed over the course of 8 weeks during the intervention as well as at a 4-week follow-up. Improvements were identified in levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and ADHD self-concept, over time, with no significant changes identified in impulsivity.
Effect of Neurocognitive Training for Children With ADHD at Improving Academic Engagement in Two Learning Settings

Abstract:Objective: This preliminary study investigated effectiveness of neurocognitive training on academic engagement (AET) for children with ADHD. The training approach targeted working memory, inhibitory control, and attention/relaxation (via brain electrical activity). Method: A reversal design with a 2-week follow-up was used to assess the effectiveness of the treatment on two children with diagnosed ADHD in two learning settings. Direct observation was used to collect academic-related behavior. Results: Improvements in on-task expected behavior (ONT-EX) and general AET, as well as reductions in off-task motor activity (OFF-MA) and off-task passive behavior (OFF-PB) were observed for both students over baselines and across the settings. Moreover, differences in behavioral change were found between participants and settings. Conclusion: These findings support using the treatment for improving academic performance of children with ADHD. Future studies may investigate influences of contextual differences, nontreatment variables, or adult's feedback during the training session on treatment effectiveness.
Neurofeedback Training Effects on Inhibitory Brain Activation in ADHD: A Matter of Learning?

Abstract:Neurofeedback training (NF) is a promising non-pharmacological treatment for ADHD that has been associated with improvement of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-related symptoms as well as changes in electrophysiological measures. However, the functional localization of neural changes following NF compared to an active control condition, and of successful learning during training (considered to be the critical mechanism for improvement), remains largely unstudied. Children with ADHD (N=16, mean age: 11.81, SD: 1.47) were randomly assigned to either slow cortical potential (SCP, n=8) based NF or biofeedback control training (electromyogram feedback, n=8) and performed a combined Flanker/NoGo task pre- and post-training. Effects of NF, compared to the active control, and of learning in transfer trials (approximating successful transfer to everyday life) were examined with respect to clinical outcome and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) changes during inhibitory control. After 20 sessions of training, children in the NF group presented reduced ADHD symptoms and increased activation in areas associated with inhibitory control compared to baseline. Subjects who were successful learners (n=9) also showed increased activation in an extensive inhibitory network irrespective of the type of training. Activation increased in an extensive inhibitory network following NF training, and following successful learning through NF and control biofeedback. Although this study was only powered to detect large effects and clearly requires replication in larger samples, the results suggest a crucial role for learning effects in biofeedback trainings.

Abstract:Impact of EEG biofeedback on event-related potentials (ERPs) in attention-deficit hyperactivity (ADHD) children. Introduction: ADHD is one of the most widely spread condition of school aged children affecting 5% of children of this age.The core clinical signs of ADHD are inattention, restlessness and impulsivity. According to various authors direct measures of attention are of two types: 1. Recording the alpha rhythm on the EEG and event-related potentials (ERP); 2. Tests of reaction time, continuous performance tests, paired associated learning, and tests of memorization; The second one is evidence-based. As for the first one it is known that ERPs especially of those with later response reflect the process of mental effortfullness to select the appropriate behavior and accomplish decision making during the action of target stimulus. Thus selection of action as well as decision making is the most important points affected in ADHD children. Besides in recent years EEG biofeedback (Neurofeedback) have become the evidence-based in the treatment of ADHD. Unfortunately the effectiveness of this approach on ERPs parameters is still unknown. Thus we aimed to study the changes of ERPs after neurofeedback therapy. Methods: We have examined 16 children with ADHD before- and after 3- sessions of neurofeedback therapy and 23 without treatment. Results: We have observed statistically significant improvement of parameters of later response like P300 in treated children compared with untreated ones whereas the treatment was non effective for earlier components of ERPs. Conclusions: Neurofeedback can affect on the process of selection of action and decision making by means of changing of P300 parameters in ADHDchildren.

Abstract:Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an efficacious psychological treatment for adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but the neural processes underlying the benefits of CBT are not well understood. This study aims to unravel psychosocial mechanisms for treatment ADHD by exploring the effects of CBT on functional brain networks. Ten adults with ADHD were enrolled and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans were acquired before and after a 12-session CBT. Twelve age- and gender-matched healthy controls were also scanned. We constructed whole-brain functional connectivity networks using graph-theory approaches and further computed the changes of regional functional connectivity strength (rFCS) between pre- and post-CBT in ADHD for measuring the effects of CBT. The results showed that rFCS was increased in the fronto-parietal network and cerebellum, the brain regions that were most often affected by medication, in adults with ADHD following CBT. Furthermore, the enhanced functional coupling between bilateral superior parietal gyrus was positively correlated with the improvement of ADHD symptoms following CBT. Together, these findings provide evidence that CBT can selectively modulate the intrinsic network connectivity in the fronto-parietal network and cerebellum and suggest that the CBT may share common brain mechanism with the pharmacology in adults with ADHD.
