Abstract:Chapter 6 is a report on a six-round-interview with an adult Hong Kong multilingual learner. A few concepts are important in this section: multiple identities, identity negotiation and co-existence. The discussion is, in essence, about the dynamics and fluidity of language learners’ identities—how the identities shape and reshape with the interaction and the context through the whole process of the L2 and L3 language acquisition. An exploration of the motivation and identity construction of L3 learners’ community practices is presented in chapter 7. The writers interviewed 16 Thai students who have studied Chinese as their L3 in China. To these multilingual learners, it is observed that the construing of multilingual identities is subject to fluidity and challenge when interacting with the L3 community. Chapter 8 is an autobiographical account of the first writer of this book, Mark Feng Teng’s L2 and L3 learning experience. I do not find this chapter and chapter 6 convincing as the studies reported show over-reliance on self-reflection. In chapter 6, the interviewee is a research assistant who participated in the current research himself. Knowing what the research aims precisely are can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, he knew exactly what the questions were about, therefore, his answers could be less noisy and more informative than a subject without that specific knowledge. On the other hand, with the awareness of what was expected from him, his responses could be altered, consciously or subconsciously. The reliability of the answers is of question. In chapter 8, Teng claims that his formal education contributed little or even negatively affected his language learning. His self-determined motivation and personal experience in language learning are amplified. However, without any empirical evidence, it may be too difficult to accept the evaluation of his L2 and L3 language education. This book is informative because it contains a detailed description and analysis of multilingual education in the Asian context. Two concepts employed throughout the chapters are instrumental motivation and integrated motivation. Integrated motivation corresponds to “ideal-self” and instrumental motivation corresponds to the “ought-to self”. The writers highlight that the motivations and identities vary at different stages of the learners’ language learning process as the results of social-cultural interactions. The construction of identities is flexible, and sometimes, frustrating. The learners in Hong Kong, for example, are in a dilemma as to whether to establish a distinctive communal identity, national identity, and international identity. Following the argument in this book, a possible solution would be to identify themselves with multiple identities. As highlighted in this book, learners’ identities can co-exist and have been co-existing in multilingual contexts. To conclude, this would be a good book to read with many other books on multilingual education. The limitation, as mentioned, mostly lies in the over-reliance on selfreflective methodology. It is recommended to those who are interested in the current status or the background of multilingual education in the Asian context.
