Abstract:Diamond composites have gained increasing interests because of their outstanding properties (e.g. robust mechanical properties, high conductivity and activity, good chemical and thermal stability, as well as excellent electrochemical properties) and their promising applications in a wide range of different fields. In this perspective, recent advances on the synthesis of diamond composites are summarized together with state-of-the-art progress in their electrochemical applications. Metal-diamond, alloy–diamond, oxide/carbide/nitride-diamond, sp2 carbon/sp3 diamond, and organic-diamond composites are covered in the context of enhancing their performance of electrocatalysis, sensing, water treatment, supercapacitor, and photoelectrochemistry. Ongoing challenges and future perspectives of the synthesis and electrochemical applications of diamond composites are outlined and discussed.

Abstract:Diamond is a promising electrode candidate, stemming from its wide electrochemical potential window, high stability, easily tunable surface termination, functionalization and modification, and diverse nanostructures. This review summarizes progress and achievements of electrochemistry of diamond and its related materials within the past 5 years, covering the fields of electroanalysis, electrocatalysis and electrochemical energy storage. The relationship of the electrochemical performance with the nature of the diamond related electrodes is systematically discussed. The challenges and future perspectives of diamond electrochemistry are outlined.

Abstract:Diamond is a highly attractive material for ample applications in material science, engineering, chemistry, and biology because of its favorable properties. The advent of conductive diamond coatings and the steady demand for miniaturization in a plethora of economic and scientific fields resulted in the impetus for interdisciplinary research to develop intricate deposition techniques for thin (≤1000 nm) and ultra-thin (≤100 nm) diamond films on non-diamond substrates. By virtue of the lowered thickness, diamond coatings feature high optical transparency in UV–IR range. Combined with their semi-conductivity and mechanical robustness, they are promising candidates for solar cells, optical devices, transparent electrodes, and photochemical applications. In this review, the difficulty of (ultra-thin) diamond film development and production, introduction of important stepping stones for thin diamond synthesis, and summarization of the main nucleation procedures for diamond film synthesis are elucidated. Thereafter, applications of thin diamond coatings are highlighted with a focus on applications relying on ultrathin diamond coatings, and the excellent properties of the diamond exploited in said applications are discussed, thus guiding the reader and enabling the reader to quickly get acquainted with the research field of ultrathin diamond coatings.

Abstract:This review article summarizes the start‐of‐art of the synthesis and surface chemistry of diamond films and diamond nanostructures, followed by the highlights of their applications in the fields of sensing, energy, catalysis, and biomedicine. The perspectives of synthesis, surface chemistry, and applications of diamond films and nanostructures are also discussed and outlined. Diamond nanomaterials are renowned for their exceptional properties, which include the inherent attributes of bulk diamond. Additionally, they exhibit unique characteristics at the nanoscale, including high specific surface areas, tunable surface structure, and excellent biocompatibility. These multifaceted attributes have piqued the interest of researchers globally, leading to an extensive exploration of various diamond nanostructures in a myriad of applications. This review focuses on non‐zero‐dimensional (non‐0D) diamond nanostructures including diamond films and extended diamond nanostructures, such as diamond nanowires, nanoplatelets, and diamond foams. It delves into the fabrication, modification, and diverse applications of non‐0D diamond nanostructures. This review begins with a concise review of the preparation methods for different types of diamond films and extended nanostructures, followed by an exploration of the intricacies of surface termination and the process of immobilizing target moieties of interest. It then transitions into an exploration of the applications of diamond films and extended nanostructures in the fields of biomedicine and electrochemistry. In the concluding section, this article provides a forward‐looking perspective on the current state and future directions of diamond films and extended nanostructures research, offering insights into the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in this exciting field.

Abstract:Nanodiamonds are metastable allotropes of carbon. Based on their high hardness, chemical inertness, high thermal conductivity, and wide bandgap, nanodiamonds are widely used in energy and engineering applications in the form of coatings, such as mechanical processing, nuclear engineering, semiconductors, etc., particularly focusing on the reinforcement in mechanical performance, corrosion resistance, heat transfer, and electrical behavior. In mechanical performance, nanodiamond coatings can elevate hardness and wear resistance, improve the efficiency of mechanical components, and concomitantly reduce friction, diminish maintenance costs, particularly under high-load conditions. Concerning chemical inertness and corrosion resistance, nanodiamond coatings are gradually becoming the preferred manufacturing material or surface modification material for equipment in harsh environments. As for heat transfer, the extremely high coefficient of thermal conductivity of nanodiamond coatings makes them one of the main surface modification materials for heat exchange equipment. The increase of nucleation sites results in excellent performance of nanodiamond coatings during the boiling heat transfer stage. Additionally, concerning electrical properties, nanodiamond coatings elevate the efficiency of solar cells and fuel cells, and great performance in electrochemical and electrocatalytic is found. This article will briefly describe the application and mechanism analysis of nanodiamonds in the above-mentioned fields. Based on the exceptional characteristics in hardness/smoothness, thermal conductivity, chemical stability, bandgap, and electron/hole mobility, the applications of nanodiamonds (NDs) coatings in the fields of energy and engineering are comprehensively reviewed. Emphasizing mechanical reinforcement, corrosion resistance, heat transfer enhancement, and electrical properties, the review also highlights areas for improvement, specifically in oxidation stability and adhesion, to inspire further research. image

Abstract:The fabrication method of diamond nanostructures can be divided into two categories: top-down etching and bottom-growth. The early work on 3D micro-structured diamond dates back to mid-1990s, using chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) techniques. In this technology, carbon or carbide fibers were typically used as the growth template. Almost in parallel, reactive ion etching (RIE) was applied to achieve diamond surface nanostructuring. After that the diamond surface nanostructures, typically vertically aligned diamond nanowires (or nanorods) has been mainly fabricated using top-down plasma etching techniques. In recent year, the templated diamond growth has gained increasing attention due to the wide choice of template, mask-free production, and unlimited surface enlargement. In this chapter, the development and main techniques used in these two approaches will be elaborated. Nevertheless, other less common methods, such as catalytic etching by metal particles, steam activation and selective materials removal will also be discussed. As indicated by the title, this chapter will mainly deal with the application of micro- and nanostructured diamond in electrochemistry. In these applications, the advantage of nanostructured diamond can be divided into three aspects: 1) providing enlarged surface area for charge storage and catalyst deposition; 2) tip-enhanced electrochemical reactions used in sensing applications; 3) diamond membranes with micro- or nanopores can be applied in the electrochemistry separation and purification applications. Examples and explanations on these applications will be given in this chapter.

Abstract:Because of its ultrahigh hardness, synthetic diamond has been widely used in advanced manufacturing and mechanical engineering. As an ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor, on the other hand, diamond recently shows a great potential in electronics industry due to its outstanding physical properties. However, like silicon-based electronics, the electrical properties of diamond should be well modulated before it can be practically used in electronic devices. In this work, we briefly review the recent progresses in producing high-quality, electronic grade synthetic diamonds, as well as several typical strategies, from the conventional element doping to the emerging "elastic strain engineering," (ESE) for tuning the electrical and functional properties of microfabricated diamonds. We also briefly show some device application demonstrations of diamond and outline some remaining challenges that are impeding diamond's further practical applications as functional devices and offer some perspective for future functional diamond development.
Synthesis of graphene interlayer diamond films for enhanced electrochemical performance

Abstract:Boron doped polycrystalline diamond (BDD) films have shown great potential in electrochemical applications. However, the high background current and poor signal-to-noise ratio, caused by the crystal defects produced during the growth process, limit its application. This paper reports the controllable synthesis of a diamond/graphene/diamond (DGD) sandwich structure. The graphene interlayer is designed to act as a high-speed tunnel for the electronic transmission, and the outer diamond layers can completely maintain its inherent excellent features. This sandwich structure can effectively avoid the negative impact of surface non-diamond carbon relative to material properties, and obtain a wider electrochemical window (3.65 V) and a lower background current (about 0.4 μA cm−2). At the same time, this DGD electrode exhibits fast heterogeneous electron transfer in both the inner (Fe(CN)6−3/−4) and outer (Ru(NH3)6+2/+3) redox systems. By changing the preparation process of the middle G layer, the growth process of the G layer and its influence on the energy band and electrochemical performance of the electrode are analyzed in detail. In general, the DGD sandwich structure methodology paves a novel route for designing high-performance conductive diamond electrodes and holding great promise in electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Catalysts are needed for electrochemical and photochemical reduction of CO2 into valuable chemicals. Diamond and its related materials have been regarded as a promising class of catalysts for CO2 reduction. With varied forms, structures, dopants, sp2/sp3 ratios, surface functionalities, and the combination with different co-catalysts, a great diversity of diamond-based catalysts have been fabricated for CO2 reduction. This review summarizes state-of-art progress and achievements on the electrochemical CO2 reduction using different diamond and related electrodes, along with the selection of electrolytes and applied conditions. The applications of diamond nanoparticles and diamond related films for photochemical CO2 reduction are highlighted. The advanced strategies to further improve the catalytic activity of diamond towards CO2 reduction have been discussed and outlined.

Abstract:Diamondoid compounds are a large group of important semiconductors and have been widely applied in many fields, including thermoelectricity. This review aims to provide a comprehensive view of our current understanding of thermal and electrical transport in diamondoid materials, and present a collection of recent discoveries concerning the lattice dynamics and electronic structure of these compounds. The diamondoid compounds are a large family of important semiconductors, which possess various unique transport properties and had been widely investigated in the fields of photoelectricity and nonlinear optics. For a significantly long period of time, diamondoid materials were not given much attention in the field of thermoelectricity. However, this changed when a series of diamondoid compounds showed a thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) greater than 1.0. This discovery sparked considerable interest in further exploring the thermoelectric properties of diamondoid materials. This review aims to provide a comprehensive view of our current understanding of thermal and electronic transport in diamondoid materials and stimulate their development in thermoelectric applications. We present a collection of recent discoveries concerning the lattice dynamics and electronic structure of diamondoid materials. We review the underlying physics responsible for their unique electrical and phonon transport behaviors. Moreover, we provide insights into the advancements made in the field of thermoelectricity for diamondoid materials and the corresponding strategies employed to optimize their performance. Lastly, we emphasize the challenges that lie ahead and outline potential avenues for future research in the domain of diamondoid thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:As one of the most rapidly expanding materials, hydrogels have gained increasing attention in a variety of fields due to their biocompatibility, degradability and hydrophilic properties, as well as their remarkable adhesion and stretchability to adapt to different surfaces. Hydrogels combined with carbon-based materials possess enhanced properties and new functionalities, in particular, conductive hydrogels have become a new area of research in the field of materials science. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview and up-to-date examination of recent developments in the synthesis, properties and applications of conductive hydrogels incorporating several typical carbon nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon dots and carbon nanofibers. We summarize key techniques and mechanisms for synthesizing various composite hydrogels with exceptional properties, and represented applications such as wearable sensors, temperature sensors, supercapacitors and human-computer interaction reported recently. The mechanical, electrical and sensing properties of carbon nanoparticles conductive hydrogels are thoroughly analyzed to disclose the role of carbon nanoparticles in these hydrogels and key factors in the microstructure. Finally, future development of conductive hydrogels based on carbon nanoparticles is discussed including the challenges and possible solutions in terms of microstructure optimization, mechanical and other properties, and promising applications in wearable electronics and multifunctional materials.

Abstract:Diamondoids are cage-like hydrocarbon materials with unique characteristics such as low dielectric constants, negative electron affinity, large steric bulk, and electron-donating ability. They are widely used for advanced functional materials in nanocomposite science. Surface modification of diamondoids also produces functional derivatives that broaden its applications. This article provides a concise review of the fundamentals of diamondoids, including their origin and functionalization, electronic structure, optical properties, and vibrational characteristics. The recent advances of diamondoids and their derivatives in applications, such as nanocomposites and thin film coatings, are presented. The fabrication of diamondoid-based nanostructured devices, including electron emitters, catalyst sensors, and light-emitting diodes, are also reviewed. Finally, the future developments of this unique class of hydrocarbon materials in producing a novel nanostructure system using advanced nanotechnologies are discussed. This review is intended to provide a basic understanding of diamondoid properties, discuss the recent progress of its modifications and functionalization, and highlight its novel applications and future prospects.

Abstract:Abstract Diamond, as an ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor, has become a promising candidate for next-generation microelectronics and optoelectronics due to its numerous advantages over conventional semiconductors, including ultrahigh carrier mobility and thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient, and ultra-high breakdown voltage, etc. Despite these extraordinary properties, diamond also faces various challenges before being practically used in the semiconductor industry. This review begins with a brief summary of previous efforts to model and construct diamond-based high-voltage switching diodes, high-power/high-frequency field-effect transistors, MEMS/NEMS, and devices operating at high temperatures. Following that, we will discuss recent developments to address scalable diamond device applications, emphasizing the synthesis of large-area, high-quality CVD diamond films and difficulties in diamond doping. Lastly, we show potential solutions to modulate diamond’s electronic properties by the “elastic strain engineering” strategy, which sheds light on the future development of diamond-based electronics, photonics and quantum systems.

Abstract:Single crystal diamond synthesis by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition at rapid growth rate has considerably advanced in the past few years. Developments have been made in growth, optical quality, and mechanical properties. Of the various types of single crystal diamond that can be produced using these techniques, high quality single crystal CVD diamond can be routinely produced, and this material is playing an increasing role in research on materials under extreme conditions. This article highlights recent developments in single crystal CVD diamond synthesis and characterization, as well as various applications in high-pressure materials research.

Abstract:Diamond has been one of the most investigated ultrawide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors for optoelectronics, superconductors, energy, and quantum applications for almost half of a century owing to its unique properties. Diamonds' intrinsic features-a large bandgap (5.47 eV), an extremely high breakdown voltage (10 MV/cm), the highest thermal conductivity (2200 W/m-K), and very high radiation-tolerance, make them promising for high-power, high-frequency devices suitable for high-temperature and extreme radiation environments. Since the demand for high-speed consumer electronics with large power and faster data handling capacity is rising at an unprecedented rate in the post-COVID era, diamonds' excellent mobility of electrons and holes (4500 and 3800 cm 2 /V-s) make them ideal for servers and systems. To materialize these multipurpose devices with higher efficiency and endurance than Si and SiC-based technologies, diamonds with good p- and n-type conductivity are needed. Therefore, nearly several decades-long efforts have been devoted to understanding and controlling the carrier conductivities in diamonds. Furthermore, diamonds' color centers' remarkable application as the qubit for next-generation quantum computers has also sparked interest in investigating diamond point defects at the quantum level. Hence, it is necessary to comprehensively study the fabrication, doping, and applications in semiconducting and quantum devices to stay relevant to the diamond revolution and thus advance this flourishing field. Therefore, this review article summarizes the current status and breakthroughs in diamond doping and devices fabricated using doped diamonds to provide an overview of the challenges and successes in using this highly promising UWBG material in electronic, superconducting, and quantum applications.

Abstract:Nanodiamonds (NDs) have excellent mechanical and optical properties, large surface area, easy bioconjugation and high biocompatibility, which makes them especially appealing for various potential applications. In recent years, NDs have received considerable attention in nanomedicine, and some noteworthy progress has been achieved. This review summarizes the synthetic routes and unique properties of NDs.
