Abstract:We investigate the properties of eigenstates and local density of states (LDOS) for a periodic 2D rippled billiard, focusing on their quantum-classical correspondence in energy representation. To construct the classical counterparts of LDOS and the structure of eigenstates (SES), the effects of the boundary are first incorporated (via a canonical transformation) into an effective potential, rendering the one-particle motion in the 2D rippled billiard equivalent to that of two-interacting particles in 1D geometry. We show that classical counterparts of SES and LDOS in the case of strong chaotic motion reveal quite a good correspondence with the quantum quantities. We also show that the main features of the SES and LDOS can be explained in terms of the underlying classical dynamics, in particular of certain periodic orbits. On the other hand, statistical properties of eigenstates and LDOS turn out to be different from those prescribed by random matrix theory. We discuss the quantum effects responsible for the non-ergodic character of the eigenstates and individual LDOS that seem to be generic for this type of billiards with a large number of transverse channels.

Abstract:We examine three billiard systems -- the cardioid, diamond (Superman), and Sinai billiards -- all of which are known to be classically chaotic. We compute their classical Lyapunov exponents, and using out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) in the semi-classical regime, we also derive their quantum Lyapunov exponents. We observe that the classical and quantum Lyapunov exponents are in agreement, strengthening the role of OTOCs as a diagnostic for quantum chaos in billiard systems. At very low temperatures, the OTOC of the Sinai billiard shows sharp growth, a phenomenon absent in the other two billiards. We identify the source of this anomalous behaviour in the geometry of the ground state wave function of the Sinai billiard, which is more sensitive to the curvature of the billiard compared to the other billiards. We also remark on the late-time behaviour of the OTOCs and how the scrambling/Ehrenfest time is related to the temperature of quantum billiards.

Abstract:A quantum wave function with localization on classical periodic orbits in a mesoscopic elliptic billiard has been achieved by appropriately superposing nearly degenerate eigenstates expressed as products of Mathieu functions. We analyze and discuss the rotational and librational regimes of motion in the elliptic billiard. Simplified line equations corresponding to the classical trajectories can be extracted from the quantum state as an integral equation involving angular Mathieu functions. The phase factors appearing in the integrals are connected to the classical initial positions and velocity components. We analyze the probability current density, the phase maps, and the vortex distributions of the periodic orbit quantum states for both rotational and librational motions; furthermore, they may represent traveling and standing trajectories inside the elliptic billiard.

Abstract:We investigate chaotic scattering on an attractive step potential with a quadrupolar deformation. The phase space features of the bound billiard are studied by using the notion of symmetry lines to find periodic orbits. We show that the scattering dynamics is intimately linked to structures in the bound billiard (infinite potential wall) phase space. The existence of preferred scattering directions is shown to be a consequence of large scale features of the phase space such as the period-two orbits. Self-similarity in the scattering functions is directly linked to unstable periodic orbits of the bound phase space. The main observations and methodology are applicable to concave billiards in general.

Abstract:The apparent randomness of chaotic eigenstates in interacting quantum systems hides subtle correlations dynamically imposed by their finite energy per particle. These correlations are revealed when Berrys approach for chaotic eigenfunctions in single-particle systems is lifted into many-body space. We achieve this by a many-body semiclassics analysis, appropriate for the mesoscopic regime of large but finite number of particles. We then identify the universality of both the cross-correlations and the Gaussian distribution of expansion coefficients as the signatures of chaotic eigenstates. Combined, these two aspects imprint a distinctive backbone to the morphology of eigenstates that we check against extensive quantum simulations. The universality of eigenstate correlations for fixed energy density is then a further signature of many-body quantum chaos that, while consistent with the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, lies beyond random matrix theory.

Abstract:The correlation and fluctuation of both entangled electrons and spin-polarized pairs affected by two rotating magnetic fields in a setup proposed by J. Carlos Egues etc. (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 89}(2002) 176401) are studied theoretically by using scattering approach. Differing from polarized pair, the entangled electron pairs are shown to behave like a composite particle with the total spins and its $z$ components. The singlet and triplet states exhibit different bunching and antibunching features, which can be easily adjusted by the magnetic fields. The correlations and variances can show up distinguish output signals for the four incident states. Our results are expected to be tested by using coincident technique.
A direct approach to coherent states of billiards using a quantum algebra framework

Abstract:Quantum billiards are a key focus in quantum mechanics, offering a simple yet powerful model to study complex quantum features. While the development of algebras for quantum systems is traced from one-dimensional integrable models to quantum groups and the Generalized Heisenberg Algebra (GHA). The primary focus of this work is to extend the GHA to quantum billiards, showcasing its application to separable and non-separable billiards. We apply the formalism to a square billiard, first generating one-dimensional coherent states with specific quantum numbers and exploring their time evolution.Then, we extend this approach to develop two-dimensional coherent states for the square billiards. We also demonstrate its applicability in a non-separable equilateral triangle billiard, describing their algebra generators and associated one-dimensional coherent states.

We prove the existence of a set in phase space, corresponding to generic sliding trajectories close enough to the boundary of the domain, in which the return billiard dynamics is semiconjugate to a transitive subshift on infinitely many symbols that contains the full N -shift as a topological factor for any , so it has infinite topological entropy. We prove the existence of uncountably many asymptotic generic sliding trajectories approaching the boundary with optimal uniform linear speed, give an explicit exponentially big (in q ) lower bound on the number of q -periodic trajectories as , and present an unusual property of the length spectrum. Our proofs are entirely analytical.

Wigner current in multidimensional quantum billiards

Abstract:In the present paper we derive the Wigner current of the particle in a multidimensional billiard - the compact region of space in which the particle moves freely. The calculation is based on proposed by us previously method of imposing boundary conditions by convolution of the free particle Wigner function with some time independent function, defined by the shape of the billiard. This method allowed to greatly simplify the general expression for the Wigner current, representing its $\mathbf{p}$-component as a surface integral of the product of the shifted free particle wave functions (the inverse Fourier transform of the free particle Wigner function). The results are also connect to an alternative approach, which takes into account the boundary conditions by adding the $\propto \delta'(x)$ term to the Hamiltonian. The latter is also generalized to the multidimensional case.

Chaos and integrability in triangular billiards

Abstract:We characterize quantum dynamics in triangular billiards in terms of five properties: (1) the level spacing ratio (LSR), (2) spectral complexity (SC), (3) Lanczos coefficient variance, (4) energy eigenstate localisation in the Krylov basis, and (5) dynamical growth of spread complexity. The billiards we study are classified as integrable, pseudointegrable or non-integrable, depending on their internal angles which determine properties of classical trajectories and associated quantum spectral statistics. A consistent picture emerges when transitioning from integrable to non-integrable triangles: (1) LSRs increase; (2) spectral complexity growth slows down; (3) Lanczos coefficient variances decrease; (4) energy eigenstates delocalize in the Krylov basis; and (5) spread complexity increases, displaying a peak prior to a plateau instead of recurrences. Pseudo-integrable triangles deviate by a small amount in these charactertistics from non-integrable ones, which in turn approximate models from the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE). Isosceles pseudointegrable and non-integrable triangles have independent sectors that are symmetric and antisymmetric under a reflection symmetry. These sectors separately reproduce characteristics of the GOE, even though the combined system approximates characteristics expected from integrable theories with Poisson distributed spectra.

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of quantum (or wave) chaos for the Bogoliubov excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in billiards. Because of the mean field interaction in the condensate, the Bogoliubov excitations are very different from the single particle excitations in a non-interacting system. Nevertheless, we predict that the statistical distribution of level spacings is unchanged by mapping the non-Hermitian Bogoliubov operator to a real symmetric matrix. We numerically test our prediction by using a phase shift method for calculating the excitation energies.
On the Euler-Poincaré Characteristic of the planar Berry's random wave: fluctuations and a perturbation study

Abstract:We prove the Central Limit Theorem for the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of Berry's random wave model in a growing domain. We also show Gaussian fluctuations for a class of Berry's mixture models that correspond to a perturbation of the initial random field. Finally, some statistical applications, explicit calculations of the variance of the perturbed Berry's model and numerical investigations are provided to support our theoretical results.

Wigner entropy conjecture and the interference formula in quantum phase space

Abstract:Wigner-positive quantum states have the peculiarity to admit a Wigner function that is a genuine probability distribution over phase space. The Shannon differential entropy of the Wigner function of such states - called Wigner entropy for brevity - emerges as a fundamental information-theoretic measure in phase space and is subject to a conjectured lower bound, reflecting the uncertainty principle. In this work, we prove that this Wigner entropy conjecture holds true for a broad class of Wigner-positive states known as beam-splitter states, which are obtained by evolving a separable state through a balanced beam splitter and then discarding one mode. Our proof relies on known bounds on the $p$-norms of cross-Wigner functions and on the interference formula, which relates the convolution of Wigner functions to the squared modulus of a cross-Wigner function. Originally discussed in the context of signal analysis, the interference formula is not commonly used in quantum optics although it unveils a strong symmetry exhibited by Wigner functions of pure states. We provide here a simple proof of the formula and highlight some of its implications. Finally, we prove an extended conjecture on the Wigner-Rényi entropy of beam-splitter states, albeit in a restricted range for the Rényi parameter $\alpha \geq 1/2$.

Abstract:We present scanning-probe images and magnetic-field plots which reveal fractal conductance fluctuations in a quantum billiard. The quantum billiard is drawn and tuned using erasable electrostatic lithography, where the scanning probe draws patterns of surface charge in the same environment used for measurements. A periodicity in magnetic field, which is observed in both the images and plots, suggests the presence of classical orbits. Subsequent high-pass filtered high-resolution images resemble the predicted probability density of scarred wave functions, which describe the classical orbits.

Abstract:We discuss general aspects of non-relativistic quantum chaos theory of scattering of a quantum particle on a system of a large number of naked singularities. We define such a system space-temporal Sinai billiard We dis- cuss the problem in semiclassical approach. We show that in semiclassical regime the formation of trapped periodic semiclassical orbits inside the sys- tem is unavoidable. This leads to general expression of survival probabilities and scattering time delays, expanded to the chaotic Pollicott-Ruelle reso- nances. Finally, we comment on possible generalizations of these aspects to relativistic quantum field theory.

Characterization of random features of chaotic eigenfunctions in unperturbed basis

Abstract:In this paper, we study random features manifested in components of energy eigenfunctions of quantum chaotic systems, given in the basis of unperturbed, integrable systems. Based on semiclassical analysis, particularly on Berry's conjecture, it is shown that the components in classically allowed regions can be regarded as Gaussian random numbers in certain sense, when appropriately rescaled with respect to the average shape of the eigenfunctions. This suggests that, when a perturbed system changes from integrable to chaotic, deviation of the distribution of rescaled components in classically allowed regions from the Gaussian distribution may be employed as a measure for the ``distance'' to quantum chaos. Numerical simulations performed in the LMG model and the Dicke model show that this deviation coincides with the deviation of the nearest-level-spacing distribution from the prediction of random-matrix theory. Similar numerical results are also obtained in two models without classical counterpart.

Abstract:Using the fact that the energy eigenstates of the equilateral triangle infinite well (or billiard) are available in closed form, we examine the connections between the energy eigenvalue spectrum and the classical closed paths in this geometry, using both periodic orbit theory and the short-term semi-classical behavior of wave packets. We also discuss wave packet revivals and show that there are exact revivals, for all wave packets, at times given by Trev=9μa2/4ħπ where a and μ are the length of one side and the mass of the point particle, respectively. We find additional cases of exact revivals with shorter revival times for zero-momentum wave packets initially located at special symmetry points inside the billiard. Finally, we discuss simple variations on the equilateral (60°–60°–60°) triangle, such as the half equilateral (30°–60°–90°) triangle and other “foldings,” which have related energy spectra and revival structures.

Solution of the Quantum Initial Value Problem with Transparent Boundary Conditions

Abstract:Physicists have used billiards to understand and explore both classical and quantum chaos. Recently, in 2001, a group at the University of Texas introduced an experimental set up for modeling the wedge billiard geometry called optical billiard in two dimensions. It is worth mentioning that this experiment is more closely related with classical rather than quantum chaos. The motivation for the present work was born from the idea of laying the foundations of a quantum treatment for optical billiards, named "The Escape Problem", by presenting the concept of a Transparent Boundary Condition. We consider a gas of particles initially confined to a one dimensional box of length L, that are permitted to escape. We find the solution of a Quantum Initial Value Problem using a numerical method developed and entirely checked with an exact, analytic method. The numerical method introduces a novel way to solve a Diffusion Type Equation by implementing Discrete Transparent Boundary Conditions recently developed by mathematicians.

Phenomenology of quantum eigenstates in mixed-type systems: Lemon billiards with complex phase space structure

Abstract:The boundary of the lemon billiards is defined by the intersection of two circles of equal unit radius with the distance 2B between their centers, as introduced by Heller and Tomsovic [E. J. Heller and S. Tomsovic, Phys. Today 46, 38 (1993)0031-922810.1063/1.881358]. This paper is a continuation of our recent papers on a classical and quantum ergodic lemon billiard (B=0.5) with strong stickiness effects [Č. Lozej et al., Phys. Rev. E 103, 012204 (2021)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.103.012204], as well as on the three billiards with a simple mixed-type phase space and no stickiness [Č. Lozej et al., Nonlin. Phenom. Complex Syst. 24, 1 (2021)1817-245810.33581/1561-4085-2021-24-1-1-18]. Here we study two classical and quantum lemon billiards, for the cases B=0.1953,0.083, which are mixed-type billiards with a complex structure of phase space, without significant stickiness regions. A preliminary study of their spectra was published recently [ Č. Lozej, D. Lukman, and M. Robnik, Physics 3, 888 (2021)10.3390/physics3040055]. We calculate a very large number (10^{6}) of consecutive eigenstates and their Poincaré-Husimi (PH) functions, and analyze their localization properties by studying the entropy localization measure and the normalized inverse participation ratio. We introduce an overlap index, which measures the degree of the overlap of PH functions with classically regular and chaotic regions. We observe the existence of regular states associated with invariant tori and chaotic states associated with the classically chaotic regions, and also the mixed-type states. We show that in accordance with the Berry-Robnik picture and the principle of uniform semiclassical condensation of PH functions, the relative fraction of mixed-type states decreases as a power law with increasing energy, thus, in the strict semiclassical limit, leaving only purely regular and chaotic states. Our approach offers a general phenomenological overview of the structural and localization properties of PH functions in quantum mixed-type Hamiltonian systems.
