Abstract:The internal Josephson oscillations between an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and a molecular one are studied for atoms in a square optical lattice subjected to a staggered gauge field. The system is described by a Bose-Hubbard model with complex and anisotropic hopping parameters that are different for each species, i.e., atoms and molecules. When the flux per plaquette for each species is small, the system oscillates between two conventional zero-momentum condensates. However, there is a regime of parameters in which Josephson oscillations between a vortex-carrying atomic condensate (finite momentum BEC) and a conventional zero-momentum molecular condensate may be realized. The experimental observation of the oscillations between these qualitatively distinct BEC's is possible with state-of-the-art Ramsey interference techniques.

Abstract:Exact calculation of the condensate fraction in multi-dimensional inhomogeneous interacting Bose systems which do not possess continuous symmetries is a difficult computational problem. We have developed an iterative procedure which allows to calculate the condensate fraction as well as the corresponding eigenfunction of the one-body density matrix. We successfully validate this procedure in diffusion Monte Carlo simulations of a Bose gas in an optical lattice at zero temperature. We also discuss relation between different criteria used for testing coherence in cold Bose systems, such as fraction of particles that are superfluid, condensed or are in the zero-momentum state.

Abstract:We present a quantum information theory that allows for the consistent description of quantum entanglement. It parallels classical (Shannon) information theory but is based entirely on density matrices, rather than probability distributions, for the description of quantum ensembles. We find that, unlike in Shannon theory, conditional entropies can be negative when considering quantum entangled systems such as an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pair, which leads to a violation of well-known bounds of classical information theory. Negative quantum entropy can be traced back to ``conditional'' density matrices which admit eigenvalues larger than unity. A straightforward definition of mutual quantum entropy, or ``mutual entanglement'', can also be constructed using a ``mutual'' density matrix. Such a unified information-theoretic description of classical correlation and quantum entanglement clarifies the link between them: the latter can be viewed as ``super-correlation'' which can induce classical correlation when considering a ternary or larger system.

Abstract:We study the minimizers of a magnetic 2D non-linear Schrödinger energy functional in a quadratic trapping potential, describing a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate. We derive an effective Thomas-Fermi-like model in the rapidly rotating limit where the centrifugal force compensates the confinement, and available states are restricted to the lowest Landau level. The coupling constant of the effective Thomas-Fermi functional is linked to the emergence of vortex lattices (the Abrikosov problem). We define it via a low density expansion of the energy of the corresponding homogeneous gas in the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent experiment [R. Lopes et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 190404 (2017)] with a homogeneous Bose gas, we investigate a homogeneous dilute Bose gas to calculate the quantum depletion density. By means of the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action approach within an improved Hartree-Fock approximation, the condensed fraction is recovered in a simpler manner and compared with corresponding findings in experimental data. Additionally, higher-order terms are taken into account for several physical quantities, in particular for the chemical potential and free energy density.

Abstract:We first propose to study the phase of Bose-Einstein condensate in the phase space. The mean value of the phase and the phase fluctuation of Bose-Einstein condensate are considered, and their explicit expressions are given with the Thomas-Fermi approximation. For a finite atom number, we find that the phase of condensate is determined by the oscillation frequency of the harmonic confining potential at certain time. The effects of the atom number and time on the phase of condensate are also discussed for the same kinds of atoms.

Abstract:We prove that if the diameter of a hard-sphere is much smaller than the size of an external potential, the s-wave pseudopotential reduces to the Huang-Yang s-wave pseudopotential. We obtain the first-order virial expansions of particle densities for dilute hard-sphere Bose or Fermi gases in an arbitrary external potential. In the absence of an external potential, the results reduce to the Huang-Yang-Luttinger and Lee-Yang virial expansions. In the quasi-classical limit, the results reduce to the results of the local density approximation.

Abstract:The recent realization of Bose–Einstein condensation in atomic gases opens new possibilities for the observation of macroscopic quantum phenomena. There are two important features of these systems — weak interaction and significant spatial inhomogeneity. Because of this a non-trivial 'zeroth-order' theory exists, compared to the 'first-order' Bogolubov theory. The zeroth-order theory is based on the mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation for the condensate ψ-function. The equation is classical in its essence but contains the constant explicitly. Phenomena such as collective modes, interference, tunneling, Josephson-like current and quantized vortex lines can be described using this equation. Elementary excitations define the thermodynamic behavior of the system and result in a Landau-type damping of collective modes. Fluctuations of the phase of the condensate wave function restrict the monochromaticity of the Josephson current. Fluctuations of the numbers of quanta result in quantum collapse-revival of the collective oscillations.

Abstract:We study a many-body system of interacting fermionic atoms of two species that are in thermodynamic equilibrium with their condensed heteronuclear bound states (molecules). In order to describe such an equilibrium state, we use a microscopic approach that involves the Bogoliubov model for a weakly interacting Bose gas and approximate formulation of the second quantization method in the presence of bound states of particles elaborated earlier by the authors. This microscopic approach is valid at low temperatures, when the average kinetic energy of all the components in the system is small in comparison with the bound state energy. The coupled equations, which relate the chemical potentials of fermionic components and molecular condensate density, are obtained within the proposed theory. At zero temperature, these equations are analyzed both analytically and numerically, attracting the relevant experimental data. We find the conditions at which a condensate of heteronuclear molecules coexists in equilibrium with degenerate components of a Fermi gas. The ground state energy and single-particle excitation spectrum are found. The boundaries of the applicability of the developed microscopic approach are analyzed.

Semiclassical Corrections to a Static Bose-Einstein Condensate at Zero Temperature

Abstract:In the mean-field approximation, a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature is described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate, or equivalently, by the hydrodynamic equations for the number density and the current density. These equations receive corrections from quantum field fluctuations around the mean field. We calculate the semiclassical corrections to these equations for a general time-independent state of the condensate, extending previous work to include vortex states as well as the ground state. In the Thomas-Fermi limit, the semiclassical corrections can be taken into account by adding a local correction term to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. At second order in the Thomas-Fermi expansion, the semiclassical corrections can be taken into account by adding local correction terms to the hydrodynamic equations.

Abstract:Yin and Radzihovsky [ X. Yin and L. Radzihovsky, Phys. Rev. A 88, 063611 (2013)] recently developed a self-consistent extension of a Bogoliubov theory, in which the condensate number density n(c) is treated as a mean field that changes with time, in order to analyze a JILA experiment by Makotyn et al. [ P. Makotyn et al., Nat. Phys. 10, 116 (2014)] on a Rb-85 Bose gas following a deep quench to a large scattering length. We apply this theory to construct a closed set of equations that highlight the role of (n) over dot(c), which is to induce an effective interaction between quasiparticles. We show analytically that such a system supports a steady state characterized by a constant condensate density and a steady but periodically changing momentum distribution, whose time average is described exactly by the generalized Gibbs ensemble. We discuss how the (n) over dot(c)-induced effective interaction, which cannot be ignored on the grounds of the adiabatic approximation for modes near the gapless Goldstone mode, can significantly affect condensate populations and Tan's contact for a Bose gas that has undergone a deep quench.
Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory of a charged Bose gas at finite temperature

Abstract:We critically examine the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) solution of the equations of motion for condensate fluctuations in a weakly coupled plasma of charged bosons at finite temperature. Analytic expressions are derived for the first two infrared-divergent terms in both the momentum distribution of the noncondensate and the anomalous Bose correlation function at low momenta. Incorporation into the theory of the appropriate form of the Hugenholtz-Pines relation for the chemical potential is needed to cancel an unphysical divergence. Exact cancellation of infrared-divergent terms is demonstrated in the HFB shift of the single-particle excitation energy away from the Bogoliubov value at long wavelengths, with the residual terms raising it towards the plasma frequency at low temperature. Numerical illustrations are presented for a number of properties of the boson plasma as functions of temperature and density in the weak-coupling regime: these are the chemical potential, the condensate fraction, the normal and anomalous momentum distribution functions and the corresponding one-body density matrices, and the dispersion relation of single-particle excitations.

Abstract:We study the occurrence of a Bose-Einstein transition in a dilute gas with repulsive interactions, starting from temperatures above the transition temperature. The formalism, based on the use of Ursell operators, allows us to evaluate the one-particle density operator with more flexibility than in mean-field theories, since it does not necessarily coincide with that of an ideal gas with adjustable parameters (chemical potential, etc.). In a first step, a simple approximation is used (Ursell-Dyson approximation), which allow us to recover results which are similar to those of the usual mean-field theories. In a second step, a more precise treatment of the correlations and velocity dependence of the populations in the system is elaborated. This introduces new physical effects, such as a marked change of the velocity profile just above the transition: low velocities are more populated than in an ideal gas. A consequence of this distortion is an increase of the critical temperature (at constant density) of the Bose gas, in agreement with those of recent path integral Monte-Carlo calculations for hard spheres.

Abstract:We introduce dimensional perturbation techniques to Bose-Einstein condensation of inhomogeneous alkali gases (BEC). The perturbation parameter is delta=1/kappa, where kappa depends on the effective dimensionality of the condensate and on the angular momentum quantum number. We derive a simple approximation that is more accurate and flexible than the N -> infinity Thomas-Fermi ground state approximation (TFA) of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The approximation presented here is well-suited for calculating properties of states in three dimensions and in low effective dimensionality, such as vortex states in a highly anisotropic trap.

Abstract:Abstract We construct states describing Bose–Einstein condensates at finite temperature for a relativistic massive complex scalar field with $$|\varphi |^4$$ | φ | 4 -interaction. We start with the linearized theory over a classical condensate and construct interacting fields by perturbation theory. Using the concept of thermal masses, equilibrium states at finite temperature can be constructed by the methods developed in Fredenhagen and Lindner (Commun Math Phys 332:895, 2014) and Drago et al. (Ann Henri Poincaré 18:807, 2017). Here, the principle of perturbative agreement plays a crucial role. The apparent conflict with Goldstone’s theorem is resolved by the fact that the linearized theory breaks the U (1) symmetry; hence, the theorem applies only to the full series but not to the truncations at finite order which therefore can be free of infrared divergences.
Fermionization of a Few-Body Bose System Immersed into a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Abstract:We study the recently introduced self-pinning transition [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 053401 (2022)] in a quasi-one-dimensional two-component quantum gas in the case where the component immersed into the Bose-Einstein condensate has a finite intraspecies interaction strength. As a result of the matter-wave backaction, the fermionization in the limit of infinite intraspecies repulsion occurs via a first-order phase transition to the self-pinned state, which is in contrast to the asymptotic behavior in static trapping potentials. The system also exhibits an additional superfluid state for the immersed component if the interspecies interaction is able to overcome the intraspecies repulsion. We approximate the superfluid state in an analytical model and derive an expression for the phase transition line that coincides with well-known phase separation criteria in binary Bose systems. The full phase diagram of the system is mapped out numerically for the case of two and three atoms in the immersed component.

Abstract:We study an ultracold Bose gas in an optical dipole trap consisting of one single focused laser beam. An analytical expression for the corresponding density of states beyond the usual harmonic approximation is obtained. We are thus able to discuss the existence of a critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation and find that the phase transition must be enabled by a cutoff near the threshold. Moreover, we study the dynamics of evaporative cooling and observe significant deviations from the findings for the well-established harmonic approximation. Furthermore, we investigate Bose-Einstein condensates in such a trap in Thomas-Fermi approximation and determine analytical expressions for chemical potential, internal energy and Thomas-Fermi radii beyond the usual harmonic approximation.

Abstract:We study the condensate and superfluid fraction of a homogeneous gas of weakly interacting bosons in three spatial dimensions by adopting a self-consistent Popov approximation, comparing this approach with other theoretical schemes. Differently from the superfluid fraction, we find that at finite temperature the condensate fraction is a non-monotonic function of the interaction strength, presenting a global maximum at a characteristic value of the gas parameter, which grows as the temperature increases. This non-monotonic behavior has not yet been observed, but could be tested with the available experimental setups of ultracold bosonic atoms confined in a box potential. We clearly identify the region of parameter space that is of experimental interest to look for this behavior and provide explicit expressions for the relevant observables. Finite size effects are also discussed within a semiclassical approximation.

Controlling Nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein Condensation with Engineered Environments

Abstract:Out of thermal equilibrium, bosonic quantum systems can Bose-condense away from the ground state, featuring a macroscopic occupation of an excited state or even of multiple states in the so-called Bose-selection scenario. In previous work, a theory was developed that predicts, in which states a driven-dissipative ideal Bose gas condenses. Here, we address the inverse problem: Given a target state with desired condensate fractions in certain single-particle states, how can this configuration be achieved by tuning available control parameters? Which type of experimental setup allows for flexible condensation control? We solve these problems, on the one hand, by proposing a Bose `condenser', experimentally implementable in a superconducting circuit, where targeted Bose condensation into eigenstates of a chain of resonators is driven through the coupling to artificial quantum baths, realized via auxiliary two-level systems. On the other, we develop a theory to solve the inverse problem based on linear programming methods. We further discuss the engineering of transition points between different Bose condensation configurations, which may find application for amplification, heat-flow control, and the design of highly-structured quantum baths.

Abstract:We consider flux equilibrium in dissipative nonlinear wave systems subject to external energy pumping. In such systems, the elementary excitations, or quasiparticles, can create a Bose-Einstein condensate. We develop a theory on the Bose-Einstein condensation of quasiparticles for various regimes of external excitation, ranging from weak and stationary to ultra-strong pumping, enabling us to determine the number of quasiparticles near the bottom of the energy spectrum and their distribution along wave vectors. We identify physical phenomena leading to condensation in each of the regimes. For weak stationary pumping, where the distribution of quasiparticles deviates only slightly from thermodynamic equilibrium, we define a range of pumping parameters where the condensation occurs and estimate the density of the condensate and the fraction of the condensed quasiparticles. As the pumping amplitude increases, a powerful influx of injected quasiparticles is created by the Kolmogorov-Zakharov scattering cascade, leading to their Bose-Einstein condensation. With even stronger pumping, kinetic instability may occur, resulting in a direct transfer of injected quasiparticles to the bottom of the spectrum. For the case of ultra-strong parametric pumping, we have developed a stationary nonlinear theory of kinetic instability. The theory agrees qualitatively with experimental data obtained using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy during parametric pumping of magnons in room-temperature films of yttrium-iron garnet.
