Abstract:Cu2Nb37O87 exhibits excellent electrochemical properties, high theoretical capacity (401 mAh g−1), safe working voltage (~1.7 V) and outstanding rate performance for lithium-ion batteries. However, poor electrical conductivity inhibits its further development. In this study, Cu2Nb37O87@C nano-wires are prepared by combining electrospinning and carbon-coating techniques to mitigate this issue, which breaks through the barrier of low conductivity, improves the ion diffusion rate and relieves the change of crystal volume. Besides, the sample is tested by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and most importantly, the mechanism of lithium-ion storage is explored by an in-situ X-ray diffraction analysis. Moreover, according to a sequence of electrochemical tests, it is clarified that the electronic conductivity and electrochemical activity of Cu2Nb37O87 are enhanced significantly. All these are inseparable from the synergistic effect of the nano-crystallisation and carbon coating. Therefore, nano-structures and surface cladding provide effective tactics to construct effective ion-migration interfaces and enhance conductivity for the further study of Cu2Nb37O87 and other electrode materials.

Abstract:Niobates with shear ReO3 crystal structures are remarkably promising anode materials for Li+ batteries due to their large capacities, inherent safety, and high cycling stability. However, they generally suffer from limited rate capabilities rooted in their insufficient electronic and Li+ conductivities. Here, micrometer-sized copper niobate (Cu2Nb34O87) bulk as a new anode material having a high electronic conductivity of 2.1 x 10(-5) S cm(-1) and an impressive average Li+ diffusion coefficient of approximate to 3.5 x 10(-13) cm(2) s(-1) is exploited, which synergistically leads to an excellent rate capability (184 mAh g(-1) at 10 C) while remaining a large reversible capacity and superior cycling stability. Moreover, the fast Li+ transport pathways of grain boundary (micrometer scale) -> lattice deformation area (nanometer scale) -> (010) crystallographic plane (angstrom scale) are demonstrated in Cu2Nb34O87. Therefore, these results could pave the way for practical application of Cu2Nb34O87 in high-performance Li+ batteries.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and subsequent radio-frequency (RF)-sputtering approach for the synthesis of CoO/NiSi(x) core-shell nanowire (NW) arrays on Ni foams. The metallic core (i.e., NiSi(x)) with high conductivity acts as a nanostructured current collector. The as-synthesized CoO/NiSi(x) core-shell NW arrays have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which deliver high cycle life and enhanced power performance compared to planar CoO electrodes on Ni foams. The high surface-to-volume ratio and improved electronic/ionic conductivity of the nanostructured electrodes may be responsible for the improved performance.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile hydrothermal and subsequent carbonization approach for the synthesis of Co3O4@SnO2@C core-shell nanorods. The as-synthesized Co3O4@SnO2@ C nanorods have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit improved cyclic performance and enhanced power capability. Both Co3O4 and SnO2 are electrochemically active materials, and the hybridization of Co3O4 and SnO2 into an integrated core-shell nanorod structure makes them an elegant synergistic effect when participating in the lithium-ion charge-discharge process. In addition, the carbon matrix has good volume buffering effect and high electronic conductivity, which may be responsible for the improved electrochemical performance.

Abstract:This paper reports a new type of nanostructure, carbon nanotubes@SnO2@carbon (CNTs@SnO2@C) coaxial nanocables, by homogeneous deposition of SnO2 and carbon layers in sequence on CNTs templates. The CNTs@SnO2@C coaxial nanocables with carbon layers of different thickness have been prepared and applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit higher lithium storage capacities and better cycling performance compared to single CNTs and CNTs@SnO2 coaxial nanocables. This novel nanostructure, which integrates both electronic conductivity and buffering matrix design strategies, can be responsible for the improved lithium storage performance.

Abstract:We report a facile, two-step hydrothermal synthesis of a novel Co3O4/α-Fe2O3 branched nanowire heterostructure, which can serve as a good candidate for lithium-ion battery anodes with high Li+ storage capacity and stability. The single-crystalline, primary Co3O4 nanowire trunk arrays directly grown on Ti substrates allow for efficient electrical and ionic transport. The secondary α-Fe2O3 branches provide enhanced surface area and high theoretical Li+ storage capacity, and can also serve as volume spacers between neighboring Co3O4 NW arrays to maintain electrolyte penetration as well as reduce the aggregation during Li+ intercalation, thus leading to improved electrochemical energy storage performance.

Abstract:In search for new anode materials with high-capacity, ultra-fast charging, and safety characteristics for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), copper niobate (Cu 0.1 Nb 1.9 O 4.85 nanorods and Cu 0.1 Nb 1.9 O 4.85 nanoparticles) has been demonstrated through structure and defect engineering for the first time. The copper niobate material presents a dual-block shear ReO 3 crystal structure with large lattice parameters and shallow-level oxygen vacancies. The structural and morphological features of Cu 0.1 Nb 1.9 O 4.85 nanoparticles offer high structural stability, an open crystalline skeleton, and enhanced Li + -transfer kinetics. Significantly, DFT calculations demonstrate lower bandgap and Li adsorption/formation energies, leading to enhanced ion/electron conductivities of Cu 0.1 Nb 1.9 O 4.85 . In-situ XRD techniques reveal the high structural stability and good mechanic property of Cu 0.1 Nb 1.9 O 4.85 nanoparticles. Consequently, Cu 0.1 Nb 1.9 O 4.85 nanoparticles present significant pseudocapacitive behavior (as high as 90.3 % at 1.1 mV s −1 ) and outstanding electrochemical performances. The reversible capacity can reach 398 mAh g −1 at 0.1C. Cu 0.1 Nb 1.9 O 4.85 nanoparticles also exhibit excellent cycle lifespan (capacity retention of 95.2 % over 250 cycles, 1C) and impressive rate performance (188 mAh g −1 at 20C and maintains 97.3 % upon 2500 cycles). Even at a high rate of 100C, it can still deliver a charge capacity of 45 mAh g −1 . Moreover, the Cu 0.1 Nb 1.9 O 4.85 nanoparticles‖LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 full cell delivers a capacity of 150.6 mAh g −1 . These results reflect the huge application prospect of Cu 0.1 Nb 1.9 O 4.85 nanoparticles for boosting Li + storage.

Abstract:Herein, a synthetic strategy for growing trimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) polyhedrons on copper foam (CF) and interweaving with copper nanowires (CNWs) is proposed. Subsequently, in situ annealing under N2 atmosphere leads to the formation of multi-doped CNWs/Cu0.39Zn0.14Co2.47O4-ZnO/CF (CNWs/CZCOZ/CF). The unique structural characteristics of CNWs/CZCOZ/CF allow it to be directly assembled as a working electrode, without additional conductive additives or binders. When it's used as the lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode, this electrode exhibits a significantly high capacity of 2305 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 500 cycles. More importantly, kinetic analysis on the basis of cyclic voltammograms (CVs) indicates that the pseudocapacitive effect is the primary contributor to the high lithium storage capacity and also accounts for the exceptionally high rate capacity of 713 mAh g-1 even if the current density is at a maximum of 10 A g-1. Moreover, the superior battery performance originates from their advantageous structural diversity and unique compositional features, including synergistic effects among polymetallic components and two highly conductive substrates (CNWs and CF), forming unhindered paths for fast charge transfer.
Nanostructured C@CuS Core–Shell Framework with High Lithium-Ion Storage Performance

Abstract:In this study, we have synthesized a nanostructured core–shell framework of carbon-coated copper sulfide (C@CuS) through a one-step precipitation technique. The carbon sphere template facilitated the nucleation of CuS nanostructures. The synthesized nanocomposites have demonstrated remarkable lithium-ion storage capabilities when utilized as an anode in lithium-ion batteries. Notably, they exhibit an impressive rate capability of 314 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 5000 mA g−1, along with excellent long-term cycle stability, maintaining 463 mAh g−1 at 1000 mA g−1 after 800 cycles. This superior performance is due to the core–shell architecture of the composite, where the carbon core enhances the conductivity of CuS nanoparticles and mitigates volume expansion, thus preventing capacity loss. Our study not only elucidates the significance of carbon in the construction of nano-heterojunctions or composite electrodes but also presents a practical approach to significantly boost the electrochemical performance of CuS and other metal sulfides.

Abstract:Herein, we have designed and synthesized a novel type of nitrogen-doped carbon-supported CoO nanohybrids, i.e., nitrogen-doped carbon-wrapped porous single-crystalline CoO nanocubes (CoO@N-C nanocubes), by using Co3O4 nanocubes as precursors. Owing to its unique structural features, the as-synthesized CoO@N-C nanocubes demonstrate markedly enhanced anodic performance in terms of reversible capacity, cycling stability, and rate capability, facilitating its application as a high-capacity, long-life, and high-rate anode for advanced lithium-ion batteries.
Insight into the Effect of Cu 2+ Doping on Cu x Nb 2– x O 5–3/2 x for High-Power Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Though Nb2O5 has great potential as a high-power anode, it still performs poorly because of its structural issue and insufficient electronic/ionic conductivity. Hence, an effective strategy that combines ion doping and structure regulation boosting the electrochemical properties of Cu x Nb2–x O5–3/2x (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) toward high-power Li-ion batteries is demonstrated. A more open-tunnel-like crystalline skeleton comes from the Wadsley–Roth shear structure with enhanced structural stability, and larger lattice parameters are realized by Cu2+ doping, which infers rapid Li+ transport. The structure regulation of Cu x Nb2–x O5–3/2x was carried out by the accurate control of the Cu2+ doping amount to search for the best crystal fault tolerance. The electronic properties of Nb2O5 with different Cu contents are revealed by DFT calculations. Meanwhile, benefiting from the reinforced intrinsic electronic/ionic conductivity, Cu0.2Nb1.8O4.7 presents the prime electrochemical property. At 20 C, the specific capacity can reach 201.22 mA h·g–1 and maintain a capacity retention of 109.4% after 3000 cycles. The apparent Li+ diffusion coefficient of Cu0.2Nb1.8O4.7 can achieve 1.11 × 10–12 cm2·s–1, which is 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of Nb2O5. These results provide tremendous support for the widespread application of Cu x Nb2–x O5–3/2x .

Abstract:To realize large lithium storage capacity and excellent rate capability lithium ion batteries, highly electrochemically active materials and rational design of structure are desirable. Here, we successfully synthesized CoO@N-doped carbon nanowire arrays derived from zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-67 (ZIF-67) on Ni foam (denoted as CoO@N-C/NF). Each CoO@N-C nanowire was built up of numerous ordered in-situ nitrogen-doped carbon coated CoO nanoparticles (around 20 nm) after annealing treatment. Benefited from the unique structural features, when served as anode for lithium ion batteries, the CoO@N-C/NF exhibit superior initial Coulombic efficiency of 78.04%, and excellent electrochemical cyclability (1884.1 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 100 cycles) and good rate capability (1169.2 mAh g−1 at the rate of 5000 mA g−1). To our knowledge, this is the highest capacity with similar electric current density that has been reported for CoO-based materials. Our results indicate that the CoO@N-C/NF electrode without any auxiliary materials are expected to open up new opportunities for CoO-based material to power electronic devices.

Abstract:Binary metal niobium oxides can offer a higher specific capacity compared to niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) and thus are ideal anode candidates for lithium ion capacitors (LICs). However, their lower electronic conductivity limits their ability to achieve high energy and power densities. In this paper, one-dimensional (1D) copper niobate (CuNb2O6) nanowires are successfully prepared by electrospinning technology and then immobilized on two-dimensional (2D) reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets to form a unique 1D nanowire/2D nanosheet CuNb2O6/rGO structure. The 1D/2D CuNb2O6/rGO electrode exhibits a high specific capacity of 312.2 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 as the anode of LICs. The proposed Li+ storage mechanism of the CuNb2O6 anode involves CuNb2O6 decomposition into lithium niobate (Li3NbO4) and copper (Cu) during the initial lithium insertion process. The intercalation-type Li3NbO4 will further serve as the host to Li+ and the inactive Cu phase will act as a conductive network for electron transportation. Furthermore, the energy density of the assembled CuNb2O6/rGO//activated carbon (CuNb2O6/rGO//AC) device could achieve a value as high as 92.1 Wh kg−1 and could thus be considered as a possible alternative electrode material for high energy and power LICs.

Abstract:In this work, a facile strategy for the construction of single crystalline Ni3S2 nanowires coated with N-doped carbon shell (NC) forming Ni3S2@NC core/shell arrays by one-step chemical vapor deposition process is reported. In addition to the good electronic conductivity from the NC shell, the nanowire structure also ensures the accommodation of large volume expansion during cycling, leading to pre-eminent high-rate capacities (470 mAh g(-1) at 0.05 A g(-1) and 385 mAh g(-1) at 2 A g(-1)) and outstanding cycling stability with a capacity retention of 91% after 100 cycles at 1 A g(-1). Furthermore, ex situ transmission electron microscopy combined with X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra are used to investigate the reaction mechanism of Ni3S2@NC during the charge/discharge process. The product after delithiation consists of Ni3S2 and sulfur, suggesting that the capacity of the electrode comes from the conversion reaction of both Ni3S2 and sulfur with Li2S.

Abstract:Nanostructured cobalt sulfide based materials with rational design are attractive for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. In this work, we report a multistep method to synthesize ultrafine cobalt sulfide nanoparticles encapsulated in hierarchical N-doped carbon nanotubes (CoSx@HNCNTs). Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) nanotubes are obtained from the reaction between electrospun polyacrylonitrile/ cobalt acetate and 2-methylimidazole, followed by the dissolution of template. Next, a combined calcination and sulfidation process is employed to convert the ZIF-67 nanotubes to CoSx@HNCNTs. Benefited from the compositional and structural features, the as-prepared nanostructured hybrid materials deliver superior lithium storage properties with high capacity of 1200 mAh g(-1) at 0.25 A g(-1). More importantly, a remarkable capacity of 1086 mAh g(-1) can be maintained after 100 cycles at the current density of 0.5 A g(-1). Even at a high rate of 5 A g(-1), a reversible capacity of 592 mAh g(-1) after 1600 cycles can still be achieved. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Lithium metal is long-term considered as a promising anode for high energy density lithium batteries. However, the practical application of lithium metal anode is hindered by the poor interfacial stability and lithium dendritic growth, which are originated from the relative infinite volume change of 'hostless' lithium metal anode. Here, we report a highly lithiophilic and stable Cu-Ni core-shell nanowires network host to accommodate the dramatic volume change of lithium and therefore improve the life-span of lithium metal anode. The Ni coating on the Cu nanowire endows the lithiophilic surface of the 3D network host facilitating the formation of the Li-Cu@Ni metallic nanocomposite anode via the facile infusion of molten lithium. The fabricated Li-Cu@Ni metallic anode shows superior electrochemical performance under galvanostatic cycling in the carbonate electrolyte, retaining flat voltage profiles over 500 cycles at a high current density of 3 mA cm(-2) with a low voltage polarization of 140 mV. Furthermore, the Li-Cu@Ni based full cell coupled with the LiCoO2 cathode exhibited good rate capability (similar to 90 mA h/g at 5C) and cycling stability at 5C for 250 cycles (0.015% decay per cycle).

Abstract:Freestanding electrodes with high energy density and cycle stability have attracted attention on the development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, both severe shuttle effect and sluggish conversion kinetics hinder their practical applications. Herein, we employed the electrospinning and subsequent nitridation processes to prepare a necklace-like structure of CuCoN0.6 nanoparticles anchored on N-doped carbon nanofibers (CuCoN0.6/NC) as freestanding sulfur host for Li-S batteries. Such bimetallic nitride boosts chemical adsorption and catalytic activity throughout detailed theoretical calculation and experimental electrochemical characterization. The three-dimensional conductive necklace-like framework could provide abundant cavities for realizing high sulfur utilization and alleviating the volume variation, as well as fast lithium-ions diffusion and electron transfer. The Li-S cell with the S@CuCoN0.6/NC cathode delivers a stable cycling performance with a capacity attenuation rate of 0.076% per cycle after 150cycles at 2.0C and an exceptional capacity retention of 657 mAh g-1 even at a high sulfur loading of 6.8 mg cm-2 over 100cycles. The facile and scalable method can help promote the widespread application of fabrics.
